Most acquirers want you to stick around. Roll equity. Hit targets. Train your replacement. But there's a different kind of buyer out there. One who wires 100% of the money at closing—and lets you walk. Dan Mytels represents this type of buyer. Through his firm, Salt Creek, he's acquired 100 businesses—most of them mature, profitable, niche companies where the owner was ready to move on. They don't always offer the highest multiple, but they do offer something many founders value more: a clean break.
Lucy Treloar is the award winning author of Salt Creek and Wolfe Island. Today we're discussing her new novel Days of Innocence and Wonder Till is on the run from life, taking to the open road in a quest to keep moving, getting as far as possible from where she's been. It is the project of a lifetime, ever since Till's best friend was snatched off the street when they were young. Driving far from Melbourne, inland and away from the familiar. Till doesn't know what she's looking for… Yet. When Till arrives in Wirowie she's immediately drawn to its quiet streets. Things start in a temporary way. Till squats in the abandoned and derelict train station. Then she makes it her home. Slowly she starts repairing; first the station's crumbling stonework and then her own ability to trust in others. It takes time to adjust, and time for Wirowie to open up to Till. Small towns can be suspicious of people from the city who think they know better. But just as good and kindness can be found most anywhere, so can darkness and Till must again face her fear and discover whether she is truly as alone as she thinks. Till's story is a journey of discovery and Till must find herself in a world she doesn't even feel comfortable saying her own name. The reader is anchored immediately to the trauma that continues to define Till. From these sparse memories we understand that danger is banal and often so nondescript you won't even recall its face. Nonetheless danger is everywhere and it can creep up on you when you least expect it. This is Till's reality and that of the women of Wirowie, plagued by their own mysterious attacker, snatching women off the streets and violently humiliating them. Within the narrative Lucy Treloar weaves stories of escape, restoration and recourse. Till is offered opportunities and she must carve out her own chances to move forward. We see that through the relationships she builds that there is hope she can learn to reconnect but that the women she is connecting with have their own damaged lives they are trying to live. Days of Innocence and Wonder feels like a thriller but reads with the subtlety and deft hand of a carefully drawn ensemble piece. As Till befriends the women of Wirowie she finds her own pain is part of a tapestry that belongs to them all. The novel entwines Till's life with the towns and suddenly all their histories are of a kind and they must come together to find a way through. In these depictions of loss and pain we see the impacts of trauma in all their embodied terror and witness a chaotic world where loss is perpetuated when there is no resolution. The book explores the ways that violence exists as both an act and as a culture that builds up perpetrators and excuses their actions. Power is called into question and Days of Innocence and Wonder is so named for the illusion that such a time ever existed. I was fascinated reading Days of Innocence and Wonder for its ability to intrigue and excite; forcing me to turn pages even as I paused to think about the implications of what I was reading. If you're looking for a summer read that asks some big questions, Days of Innocence and Wonder is definitely one to pack wherever you're heading this holiday period.

What a CreepSeason 22, Episode 5The Salt Creek Kidnappings (Real-Life Wolf Creek) In 2016, two backpackers traveling through Australia teamed up to check out the Salt Creek region of South Australia through the Gumtree website (kind of like Craig's List for ride shares). They didn't know that the 6'6” man who agreed to drive them to the Coorong beach was a violent offender who preyed on women looking for adventure. This is a story about Creep Roman Heinze and the resiliency of two women who survived his attacks and helped this loser be sent to prison. By Davy Crockett This part will cover additional stories found through deeper research, adding to the history shared in found in the new book, Grand Canyon Rim to Rim History. Overcrowding Concerns In 1971, because of overcrowding in the inner Canyon, the Park Service started to implement a reservation system for camping. They shared a situation on the Easter weekend when 800 people tried to camp at Phantom Ranch, which only handled 75. Park Superintendent Robert Lovegren (1926-2010), said, “We readily accept quotas on tickets to a theater or sports event. If the performance is sold out, we wait for the next one or the next season. We don't insist on crowding in to sit on someone's lap.” Reservations requests were made by mail. In the first month of the system, 1,463 people wanted to reserve 100 camping spots for Easter weekend. They used a lottery system for that weekend. Get Davy Crockett's new book, Grand Canyon Rim to Rim History. Read more than a century of the history of crossing the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim. 295 pages, 400+ photos. Paperback, hardcover, Kindle, and Audible. Phantom Ranch Chef John Boggess worked as the chef at Phantom Ranch for ten months and was ready for a new assignment in 1971. But there was a problem, and it looked like he would be trapped at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. “When Boggess showed up here for his cooking job, he weighed 216 pounds. There's a rigid rule that no one over 200 pounds could ride the mules down the walls of the canyon. Boggess went on a diet, shed 16 pounds and rode down to his job.” But during his ten months down there, he ballooned well above the 200-pound limit. He paid a helicopter pilot to bring him out of the canyon. 1971 Flood Damage In July 1971, a wall of water washed down Bright Angel Creek and stranded eleven hikers at Phantom Ranch who were on the wrong side of a washout area. They had to spend the night out in the canyon. Rangers came to the rescue the next day, strung ropes across the rain-swollen creek, and helped the hikers on their way. The washout exposed a 60-foot section of the new trans-canyon water line about a mile above Phantom Ranch. Major breakage points required tools and a giant welder to be brought in by helicopter. The North Kaibab Trail was closed for more than a week to make repairs. Then just a month later, a two-hour storm dumped 1.34 inches on the South Rim and washed out a portion of Bright Angel Trail near Indian Garden and left an inch of water in the Ranger Cabin. Thirty hikers had to go across the Tonto Trail and exit using the Kaibab Trail. Grand Canyon Noise Pollution “Noise levels at this once tranquil vacation spot have risen steadily over the years and now rival levels on a busy downtown street, two Northern Arizona University researchers reported.” The 1971 test was conducted on Labor Day weekend and measurements reached as high as 90 decibels in tests on the South Rim, the inner trails and at Phantom Ranch. Most of the noise came from air traffic which was not yet restricted over the corridor region. Hump to Hole Attempt On October 26, 1973, Ross Hardwick, age 20, of Anaheim, California, and Scott Baxter, age 27, of San Diego, California, both students at Northern Arizona University started a run from the high point in Arizona, the summit of Mr. Humphreys (12,633 feet) to Phantom Ranch (2,546 feet). They were attempting to complete the run of about 80 miles in less than 24 hours. They didn't carry food or water, but placed caches along the way and had a support crew on U.S. 180. Unfortunately, they quit less than halfway. Later in 1982, Baxter and Alan Williams accomplished the reverse direction which became known as “Hole to Hump” in 21:26. Runaway From Inner Canyon On February 6, 1974, a group of troubled youth from a Texas school went on a hike down Bright Angel Trail, turned west on the Tonto Trail at Indian Garden and camped at Salt Creek three days later.

It was an uncomfortably hot and dry day in February of 2016, when two backpackers, one from Germany and one from Brazil, struck up a friendship and decided to head to Melbourne, Australia from Adelaide. They asked to share a ride with 59-year-old Roman Heinz. Little did they know, they had accepted a lift from a man who was planning a vile and terrifying attack. Backpackers Lena and Beatrice were looking for a lift and a little adventure when they accepted a ride from a man they had never met, named Roman Heinze. However when Roman unexpectedly drove the girls to a remote beach, they were in for a lot more than the innocent impromptu camping trip. This excursion very quickly turned into a fight for their lives. *I forgot to mention this at the top, however this story does contain some discussion of sexual assault*

Welcome to the first episode of In Our Nature: Nebraska! In this episode, we're taking a journey that spans millions of years without leaving Lancaster County. Along the way, we'll become acquainted with the Salt Creek tiger beetle, a brave and voracious little bug that is critically endangered and only found here in Nebraska. This episode, I'm also joined by Brooke Talbott, a producer for Platte Basin Timelapse, as she recounts her experience with the beetles and their habitat, the amazing — and vulnerable — saline wetlands. We've arrived at the end of our Voyeurist journey and thought it was fitting to hear from Aaron, Spencer, Chris, Tim, and JJ, as this final song has a beautiful story in the collaboration that led to it. Through this last set of conversations, it becomes increasingly clear that the process of creating Voyeurist has led Underoath into the healthiest spot they've been in. They now seem to have a system based on trust and appreciation for one another which is not something they've always had and something many people never experience. I'm very thankful to the band for letting me explore so deeply. Excited to see what they do next. This week we're jamming along to the classic tune Salt Creek. This is a performance track, rather than a backing track. It's me playing both tune and backup so you've got a reference to listen to if you're new to the tune, or just want to be able to listen a few times to the whole thing.Don't forget to check out the other three episodes when you're done and jam along! If you want a chord chart (or just want to find out more or get in touch), head to bluegrassjamalong.com
GrassTalkRadio.com - Episode 199 Uncle Rico's Time Machine Put the handle between your legs. Set the date on the dial. Don't forget to put the crystal in the clamp. Tell Kip to throw the switch. You will be instantly transported to another time and place. In this case, Motorhead's Bar and Grill on a Thursday night in McDonough, Georgia. Take notes. This has everything: How to cope with 15 free shots for the band, the buzzing of countless neon lights, screaming adoring fans, smashing beer bottle sounds, the snapping of a "smoke eater" machine, a late fiddle player, a fill in bass player thereby causing us to "wing" all of the harmonies since we are missing our tenor singer. Pay attention to Buddy's guitar playing. Those little mid-range licks put right into the gaps! It is a perfect representation of good bluegrass guitar. David's banjo playing is top notch and different from what you are used to. Mike's fiddle, despite no time to warm up, is truly amazing. Tony's bass playing, even though he is winging it on every tune, proves what a great musician (with "great ears") he truly was. And the tone from my 1985 Carlson Flatiron is better than I have ever heard it. Golden times before everyone lost their minds. Back then, only WE had lost out minds. This episode is dedicated to the memory of my good friend and mentor Tony Terrell who taught me so much about piano tuning, rebuilding and introduced me to so much great music. It has a drunk bar owner (the guy with the $300 at the end of the night) hassling us to play Free Bird, our answer, including an "alright, wise guy, I'll show you", cynically wicked slide mandolin solo using a Craftsman deep well socket, multiple "guest slots" from folks in the audience, a tear-jerking version of Dixie, Sally Goodin the old time way... It has it all. And despite all of the very obvious flaws, it is a great gig! And they kept us on for 3 more years! By the way, when I told Harry that we'd play Free Bird in the fourth set, that was a joke. We were only booked for three sets. Happy Thanksgiving, folks! And don't forget: Christmas Times a Coming! All you mandolin players need Jackson's eBook Christmas Songs For Mandolin. You still have plenty of time to learn them before the mistletoe is hanging. Granny don't wanna hear no Salt Creek! She wants Jingle Bells! Enjoy the show. ------------------------------------- If you like my podcast I hope you will keep this show going and growing by joining "the club" over on my Patreon page. On this weeks episode I sit down with two of the members of Salt Creek, an alternative rock band from Lincoln, Nebraska. We talk about the forming of the band, taking time off during the pandemic, and the big year they have had so far in 2021. Salt Creek released a small EP in May to celebrate their signing with Tooth & Nail Records. They are also releasing a new full length on 10/15 called Out Of The Sky. We talk about about their recording process, working with their producer, and we talk some meaning behind elements on the album. So be sure to pull up a chair, grab a Chet's Wild Soda, and have a listen! PRINCIPLE OF THE DAY In order for someone to learn, they must live. QUESTION OF THE DAY Where in your world across the CORE 4 (Body, Being, Balance, and Business) are you restricting other people's ability to learn through living because you're not allowing them to actually experience the pain of living? TASK OF THE DAYTake out your War Map and Weapon, aka your journal and pen, and write that area down. What clean agreements are you willing to put into place that will create a new possibility and dance inside your relationship? QUOTE OF THE DAY “Part of my job as a father is to create conditions for my daughter to live through learning. The question becomes, how do I let her live so that she learns, knowing that if I let her live, she's going to get hurt and shit's going to go sideways? The answer? Clean agreements. Without them, I'm fucked.” --Garrett J White __________________________________________ TAKE ACTION Love the FIRE, Principle, Insights & Revelations Shared With You In Today's Episode?
