Today have the third and penultimate conversation from our Label Focus mini-series presented by Zara Hedderman. So far we've heard from Willie Stewart of Nyahh Records and Joey Edwards from Pizza Pizza Records and in this episode, you'll hear Zara speaking with Michael Roe, label and artist manager with Faction Records. Faction Records is coming close to reaching a massive milestone of 20 years in business after it was founded by Ken Allen in 2006. You may remember a compilation CD from around that time called Faction One and featured bands like Director, The Immediate, Republic of Loose and Future Kings of Spain amongst others. Today, populating Faction's roster of artists are a number of firm favourites with critics and audiences such as Sorcha Richardson, Niamh Regan, Martin Hayes, and Jape. Over the course of the chat Michael delved into the many ways that the industry is changing and how he and his colleagues at Faction work with their artists to develop their careers and prepare them to build their audience base and engage with international markets. In this regard, the conversation explores different elements of the business-side of the artist-label relationship and how important it is to have a plan but also not fear failure along the way. Zara and Michael discuss the impact of artists self-releasing their music and how that's changing the overall landscape and the importance of the relationships artists build with various media outlets and journalists. We'll have another episode, the final one in this series, very soon, but until then, here's Michael Roe of Faction Records.Keep up to date on Faction Records here:https://www.instagram.com/factionmusicieMusic featured:Annamoe Drive - Procrastinationhttps://anamoedrive.bandcamp.com/track/procrastinationNiamh Regan - Madonnahttps://niamhregan.bandcamp.com/track/madonnaSéan Joyce - My Facehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrE9V3Ccs7I
Galway artist Niamh Regan released her second album Come As You Are on May 31. On this episode we talk through all 10 of its tracks, as well as a not-very-secret hidden track, plus some of the fun things that she's experienced since releasing debut album Hemet in 2020. -- From the press release: Since its release, Niamh has embarked on headline tours from Ireland, to UK, Australia, Spain + more. Pairing this with many festivals and a variety of support opportunities with artist such as CMAT, Villagers, John Grant, SOAK, Patrick Watson, Sam Amidon, Cormac Begley, and Sorcha Richardson. In between her performances, Niamh began to write her second record in Attica Studios with producer Tommy McLaughlin. She says, ‘I arrived in Donegal to meet Tommy for the first time with a bunch of demos, half-baked ideas and feeling not ready, it was scary. But I'm so glad that I did it that way. Trusted the process and came into the studio with the intention of capturing exactly where I was with it all and Tommy helped me build from there.' And here we are, with the release of that second album, titled ‘Come As You Are'. It's an album full of acutely observed vulnerabilities and introspection. Its themes are the issues that many of us find loom large in the small hours: questions of self-doubt, uncertainty about your life's direction, whether relationships are flourishing in the way you'd hoped and determining priorities. “A lot of it is about being in your late twenties and kind of realising we're all running out of time,” she ponders. “I'd have bouts of massive self-belief in the studio, and then in the next breath I would be like, ‘This is the worst piece of music I could have even imagined.' It was a rollercoaster. But through that I found self-acceptance; this is where I'm at and making peace with that. That's what the album essentially is, just making peace with where I'm at and being realistic with myself.” -- Niamh Regan tour dates: June 13: Windmill Live Show w/James Vincent McMorrow, Dublin (solo) June 16: Doolin Folk Festival (full band) July 16: Galway International Arts Festival (full band) July 25: Song Room, Wexford (solo) August 2: All Together Now August 12: Kilkenny Arts Festival (solo) August 17: Electric Picnic (solo) November 14: Cyprus Avenue, Cork (full band) November 15: Liberty Hall Theatre, Dublin (full band) -- Buy Niamh Regan - Come As You Are: https://niamhregan.bandcamp.com/album/come-as-you-are

Brian Dillon, one part of Meltybrains, released his second solo album under the moniker The Line on November 1, 2023. Entitled Red Blood Cells and Righteousness, it's an album full of collaborations, featuring Lullahush, Fehdah and Loah, Sarah Corcoran (Pillow Queens), Sorcha Richardson, Talos, God Knows and Murli, and lots more. On this episode, we talk through all the tracks on the album and discuss the making of it. Brian says: “This is an album built on personal relationships and communication, dedicated to playing a small but significant role as a part of a world so much bigger than any of us are willing to admit. After all, maybe we're all just blood cells, swimming through the veins of the earth, serving a much higher function.” On January 25 at The Horse Gallery, Dorset Street, Dublin, the exhibition White Blood Cells is opening, a sister piece to the album. A series of immersive soundscapes by Brian Dillon in collaboration with photographer Mark McGuinness. The audio-visual work explores the role and effect of supply chains in today's global world. From the press release: One of the key topics highlighted by the audio work is immigration and refuge. In 2024 global migration is taking place on a level never seen before. The work explores the West's reluctance to give shelter to people who have been driven from their homes due to economic factors which are heavily influenced by western consumer demands. If Dillon's soundscapes pose questions for the future of society, industry, and migration, McGuinness' images act as accompanying notes on our present. The images are all taken from the ongoing project, I Hope I'm Wrong, which documents the impact human activity is having on the environment. All of the images are taken in locations in Ireland which are predicted to be heavily impacted by sea level rise within the next decade. A live performance will take place on the opening night by a music group made up of migrants and asylum seekers. They will perform a short set of songs from their home countries at 6pm, Thursday 25th January 2024. Admission is free, and all are welcome to attend. You can buy Red Blood Cells and Righteousness at TheLine2.bandcamp.com

Honestly, when it came to planning this season, I knew the finale had to be about my home, Ireland. But the end result has turned out to go well beyond what I expected. Ireland is a country that's embraced me for over a decade now and I'm constantly gobsmacked by the amount of love and generosity I feel when I'm there. It's a place that's been crucial to both my professional and personal life, with both areas being connected due to the arts. The artists of Ireland are some of the most talented human beings on earth, with each artist embodying the ways that Ireland is a small, but mighty country. These artists constantly put it all on the line, they're constantly pouring out their emotions in ways that amazes me again and again. There's also a beautiful sense of creative diversity that's growing throughout Ireland and it is my absolute privilege to tell you more about that. Joining me today are four artists who beautifully showcase the diverse palette of creativity that Ireland has to offer. I'm joined by the stunningly talented Sorcha Richardson (4:36), God Knows (37:08), Ryan Vail (1:18:25), and Problem Patterns (1:52:27). Also, next week I'll be dropping part 2 of this finale, which will be a radio broadcast full of an unbelievable collection of Irish songs that I can't wait to share with you. That radio broadcast will be dropping on September 25th and you'll find that only on Spotify.

The second episode of our second collection features ‘Mouse' by Maya Kulukundis. Maya is a writer fascinated by the interplay between the imaginary and the real, the paranoid and the rational. She is notably neurotic and often mad... her words, not ours. Our voice actor today is Claire O’Reilly. Claire is a theatre maker based in London and Dublin. She floats amicably between directing Fringe work, tutoring actors, assisting on large scale shows and voicing announcements between programmes on RTE. Featured tracks on today’s episode include: 'The Mater' by Saint Sister, 'Hail Mary' and 'Elizabeth' by Maija Sofia', 'Twisting the Knife' by Sorcha Richardson and 'Moth' by Kitt Philippa. “I didn’t spend the years when I was becoming a musician in Dublin, but I still know how important a lot of these [spaces] are to the creative scene. And even since coming home it’s very obvious, you need places where young creative people can go… That are affordable.”'Cult of Youth' is the first series in the new podcast network from The Tenth Man. Featuring some of the most forward-thinking names in art, culture, music and business, each episode will be a throwback to the guest's earlier years, how their youth informed their careers and shaped their lives as they are today. We also chat about modern youth culture in Ireland and ask the age-old question - if you could go back to your younger days, would you? And what would you change? In the first episode Eric Davidson sits down with Sorcha Richardson into the studio. Dublin born and bred, at 18 Sorcha upped sticks and moved to New York city. She spent 8 years there developing her sound, songwriting and stage craft. Returning to Dublin in late 2017, at the beginning of November she launched her album ‘First Prize Bravery’ and this month she plays a number of Irish shows, kicking off in Whelan’s on Wednesday November 20th.
UK singer releases her debut album of the same name tomorrow!

Sorcha Richardson tour dates: November 20: Whelan's, Dublin November 21: Winthrop Avenue, Cork November 22: Roisin Dubh, Galway

Would you please help us improve the show by voting for your favourite track from this episode? TweetPinShare Otoboke Beaver hold us to account with some Godzilla-sized punk noise this week - twice. We spin these lunatic Japanese punkettes and realise that the world will never be the same again. Quite how we segue from hardcore Jap-punk to a reggae Cover Shot is anyone's guess. But we do. Organica Orquesta provide what is arguably one of the most covered tracks of all time, and it may surprise you that it isn't originally a Simon and Garfunkel original. Tobin ushers in a New Music Double Header with the inimitable Sorcha Richardson with her repetitive musings on love Don't Talk About It. First up is Honeymoan and Low Blow, with its distinct three flavours of guitar. Richard's summation of all of this is merely "pleasant". We have more musical homage from Sweet Baboo with his take on Jonathan Richman. Soft Walls fill in the gaps with the brilliant LP No Time, which is exactly what we have had to listen to this! They met whilst at at University attending a music club. Otoboke Beaver then came into existence gaining its name from a local love hotel in Osaka. It took the band 2 years to lay anything down. This came in the form of a demo CD of three tracks, one of which was later re-recorded and distributed to fans who helped raise the funds to send Otoboke Beaver to the United States. A mini-album soon followed with remarkable cover artwork by artist Yukari Matsuoka. A year later the band released their first live album, followed a year later by a limited-edition single featuring 3 tracks. That same year (2013) they put out another mini-album Love Me Sign. Shortly after its release bassist Nishikawachi left the band only to be released by a fan who emailed the band asking if she could join the band. Otoboke Beaver began touring internationally in 2016 and in fact racked up over 24,000 miles in one week with two sets at Coachella Festival and a three-date fixture in the UK. So is Otoboke Beaver a FTBOTRB Recommendation? Yeah, of course. We love their energy and drive and the way their music just leaves you gasping for breath. It's an aural assault and one which leaves you wanting more. And we have it.
