Johanna Garton is a three-time author with her most recent book; All in Stride, released this month. Her book details the gripping and inspiring stories of elite runners Elvin and Shadrack. Beginning with their upbringing in Kenya, Garton follows the runners through their journeys to the United States, competing for Division One universities, their romance during college, and ultimately their service as U.S. soldiers and professional runners. More than just a running story, All in Stride takes readers behind the scenes to explore the difficulties Elvin and Shadrack faced, including adjusting to an entirely new culture in the U.S., bigotry and intolerance, the stresses and joys of global competitions like the Olympics, joining the U.S. Army's World Class Athlete Program, and discovering the ever-changing landscape of what it means to be an American. Woven through the narrative is the story of Samantha Schultz, who competed in the sport of modern pentathlon for the U.S. Army. Sammy's journey involved several obstacles including poor coaching, overtraining, the intense pressure to make the Olympic team and a dive into disordered eating, a condition that plagues so many young female athletes. In this conversation we discuss: - Johanna's background and early introduction to running - The stories of Shadrack & Elvin - The story-writing process - The challenges of "making it" as a professional runner And so much more. Samantha is a sex coach, and the two have a really incredible and in depth conversation around why the quiet ones are always the freakiest ones (Samantha blows Dustin's mind with her take on this), where our kinks come from, the convergence of pleasure and pain and why pain can feel good, and Samantha's work around libido with both men and women. Samantha also shares what got her into this work and at the very end of the episode she talks about the benefits of putting ice cubes in your pussy.WELCOME TO EPISODE 49! We're gonna go lay down now. We always love it when TKFLASTANIS come back on the show, so we're thrilled that modern pentathlete Samantha Schultz had some time to chat with us about her experiences in Tokyo. We talk with Samantha about competing in the heat, life in the Olympic Village (how were those beds?), and how the post-Olympic lows have been, as well as what's on tap for her future. Modern pentathlon's not known for making headlines during the Olympics, but Tokyo's women's competition did -- and sadly, not for a great reason. Annika Schleu, who was leading the competition going into the horse riding portion, had a horse that refused to jump partway through the competition. This led Schleu to visibly break down, and her coach also hit the horse on the rear, an action that's prohibited by the sport's rules. Schleu's medal hopes were dashed, the coach was sent home from the Games, and the international federation had a PR nightmare to clean up. The result is that the UIPM, the federation, annouced this week that after Paris 2024 (which will see a shortened 90-minute modern pentathlon), the riding portion will be replaced by a sport yet to be determined. All of this is in hopes that the event will be included on the sports program for LA 2028. This news has caused quite a stir with many of the sport's athletes, and we talk with Samantha about her thoughts on what riding means to the modern pentathlon. Throughout 2021 we're revisiting great stories from Atlanta 1996! For our Atlanta 1996 moment this week, Alison tells us all about the waving men. We also have news from TKFLASTANIS of Team Keep the Flame Alive, including: Jacqueline Simoneau Connor Fields Ness Murby Ginny Thrasher McKenna Geer Phil Andrews We have an update on the Raven Saunders podium protest at Tokyo 2020, with a decision as to whether or not she should receive sanctions. Also, we have news from Beijing 2022, or really, the lack of it where foreign journalists are concerned. Will the organizing committee allow foreign press access to venues and pre-Games events as they initially said they would? Will the IOC ensure this happens. We discuss the implications of the organizing committee's actions on the global interest of these Games. And, in time for the 1000 days out from Paris 2024, the IOC has launched a global store! A few weeks back I spent time in Colorado getting to know Sgt. Samantha Schultz, better known to her friends and family as Sammy. Sammy's heading to Tokyo this week to compete in the modern pentathlon (!!) which comprises five different events: fencing, freestyle swimming, equestrian show jumping, and a final combined event with pistol shooting and cross country running. As someone whose had the privilege of interviewing a slew of athletes in her day, I have to say that Sammy's unlike anyone I've spoken with before. Sure, she's got the tenacity and diligence of many she'll compete alongside. But — she's also a Soldier in the Army. For episode 169, Sammy is telling me all about the Army's World Class Athlete program and what it's like to be a Soldier-athlete. She also shares how she got into this unique sport, what her weakest skill is, how she manages the opportunity cost of training, and what her hopes and dreams are for the future. TBH; she's opened my eyes to a world I knew nothing about. Proud to be part of your support squad as she gears up to compete on August 5 and 6! I (Deanna) was moved into movement around starting the Needle Movers organization in spring 2020.We were at the beginning of the Corona Virus Pandemic, and our country was being absolutely shook by the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd. It felt almost like more that my soul could carry at that time - my deep rooted grief around our nations history was brought to the raw surface once again - and the responses of many of my white-identified friends piled on top of my soul like a ton of bricks. Some responses were in an attempt to love. And some - many - were not.But most, no matter the intent, brought me to tears often. One friend, however sent me a private message in the height of it all and simple said, "Maybe you need to start an organization."As soon as I read it, I felt like God said, "Deanna, now is the time."And a little over a year later, here we are.In this episode, my co-host Samantha Schultz and I reminisce about what was going on with us personally when we learned about George Floyd and how his life became the catalyst for starting the work of Needle Movers for Social Equity.NOTE: We recorded this episode before there was a verdict. Listen all the way till the end for our post-trial thoughts and insights.*********************************************************Follow Needle Movers:Instagram: needlemoverspodcastFacebook: facebook.com/needlemoversforsocialequityWebsite: needlemovers.org

In our efforts to learn more about how para sports work, we talk with 1996 and 2000 Paralympian John Register about the mechanics of running blades (aka running legs). This is (hopefully) our first interview with John, who competed at the 1996 Paralympics in swimming and the 2000 Paralympics in silver long jump (got an American record of 5.41m), and 5th in 100m and 200m. He’s currently a keynote and motivational speaker does LinkedIn Live on Thursdays at 3:12 MT. John is taking part in a panel called “Disability and Sports,” as part of the University of Rhode Island’s Honors Colloquium, “Disability in the 21st Century.” The panel discussion, “Disability and Sports,” will take place virtually Tuesday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. The link to the lecture can be found on the day of the event in the colloquium schedule, next to the name of the presentation. Jill was completely shocked by one of his comments - you won't believe what he admitted.
