The first time Sam heard the Irons, she laughed like everyone else, played the LP once more out of disbelief, and then—telling herself it was for kicks—listened repeatedly until each song became an earworm. Either the girls—Mapes, Amy, and Edith — were geniuses, or they were the worst band in the world. Narrated by host Matt Gomez. Published in Metaphorosis on 29 April 2022. For our seventh episode of Habitual Routine, we chat with two runners: Sara Kate Gillingham and David Kane. On Valentine's Day 2017, Sara Kate became a living donor when she gave 60% of her liver to her friend David. Because of this donation, David, a lifelong athlete, runner, and triathlete, was able to regain his life after a form of cancer had sidelined him and prompted an immediate need for a liver transplant. More than four years after the surgery, they will be running the TCS New York City Marathon together. Prior to her surgery, Sara Kate was always a more casual runner, but she decided to take on this marathon alongside David. She hopes that sharing her story will encourage others to consider becoming a living donor. We talk to Sara Kate and David about the journey of giving and receiving a transplant, the feelings and concept of gratitude on both sides, and why running the TCS New York City Marathon will be an incredible experience for both. Thanks to Abbott for supporting this episode of the podcast. Billy Shiver serves as the pastor of Connection Church in Vidalia, GA. He and his wife, Kate, have two children, Will (4) and Sara Kate (1). Billy graduated from Vidalia High School in 2006 and went on to graduate from Georgia Southern University in 2011 with a B.S. in Chemistry. While attending GSU, Billy worked with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and then, upon graduation, was hired as the Discipleship Pastor at Connection Church in Statesboro, GA. In January of 2015, God led Billy and Kate back to Billy's hometown of Vidalia to start a Connection Church campus there. In three short years, Connection Church became one church in five locations across southeast Georgia: Statesboro, Vidalia, Millen, Dublin, and Savannah. In 2018, God led Connection to transition their model into a network of autonomous churches. In 2019, the Connection Network was launched, with the vision of planting 50 churches in the next 30 years. In 2021, the Connection Network planted their sixth church, in Athens, GA, and are looking forward to planting many more in the years to come.
