Nicholas passed away on Tuesday, 8 June 2021. Nicholas Venter, 33, battled a very aggressive form of cancer that has left him barely able to walk and on 24-hour oxygen in a matter of weeks. Despite this, his biggest wish was to marry the beautiful Angel by his side for the last three years, Laetitia. Together with Good Morning Angels and South Africa's angels, their dream came true.
Next week, your universe traveling friend comes back with new things to review. But if you want to catch up on the past four seasons of the podcast, here is a somewhat easier way to do it.
Rape survivor Louise Nicholas says she will not give up advocating for victims of sexual violence, despite the government axing her contract. The Ministry of Social Development announced the decision via a Zoom call, a move which has been called "absolutely disgraceful" by the National Party. They say they would restore the funding if they get in to government. Currently there's no not for profit or other advocacy group which works with children, and Nicholas intends to set up a trust to continue her work and independently support the voices of survivors. She speaks to Susie Ferguson.

Interview: Nicholas Fraser, Left Hanging. In this session, I talk with Nicholas Fraser about his text-based artworks. We focus on Left Hanging, a project where re-purposes his unrequited dating app. intros into ephemeral objects. Love letters like hanging chads cast shadows of conversations that were never properly counted. He spent a great deal of effort crafting these letters, and though they never captured their intended recipient, he found a way to utilize this archive to reach a broader audience. Nicholas' work for the past decade has focused on the slippages of language, the erasure of meaning, our human desperation to communicate and our dizzying agility at failing at it. But sometimes we succeed, like in this conversation where we get an in-depth look at how Nicholas' projects evolve and adapt. As you listen to this, I encourage you to take a look at his website: http://nicholasfraser.com/

The mission statement of Helping Parents Heal is: Sharing the Journey from Bereaved to Shining Light Parent. Conrad and Paolo Leslie embody this journey. Their beautiful only son Nicolas was murdered by a terrorist in Nice, France on July 14, 2016. Conrad and Paola were obviously devastated by Nicholas' passing. Conrad is an accomplished engineer and business owner. He has taken a no-nonsense approach to finding his way since Nicolas' passing. Paola has taken a different approach, including being heavily involved with Helping Parents Heal. I've known the Leslies, mainly Paola for a few years. In this interview, Conrad opens up about the difficulty of the journey but also the beauty he has found along the way. He shares the incredible signs he and Paola have received from Nicolas, who remains active in their lives. We talk about forgiveness and how it's a process, not an act. It was refreshing to talk with a father about his perspective, as Helping Parents Heals consists mainly of mothers.Conrad has given me permission to share the document he created that chronicles the signs from Nicolas, "Gifts from Nick", including photographs we discussed during the interview. Paul James (Greek, The Path, Hot Zone, Soundtrack) visits the studio and instantly puts Nicholas on his heels by revealing that Nicholas' beloved, bottom shelf, American steel-cut oats might be laced with some sort of new 21st Century toxin. Paul kindly offers to feed all of us his clean, organic, Irish steel-cut oats (for a price), and just as soon as Paul provides his address we can go knock on his door for breakfast. What we don't have to pay for, however, is Paul's illuminating story about growing up a Christian Scientist - a denomination of Christianity that encourages belief in the healing power of prayer, instead of the use of modern medicines, as the best tool for curing illnesses. This ranges from the treatment of illnesses as large as cancer, to such mundanities as not using Neosporin for cuts. Equally as compelling are Paul's reflections on the sudden death of his father, when Paul was still a young man. Paul speaks about his journey through that difficult time, his new understanding of the unconscious pessimism he lived with in the aftermath of that event, and how he has recently begun exploring a more hopeful, and enriching, path forward in his life. It's a beautiful, thoughtful, funny, and reflective conversation. It was a joy to have him on the show.Something Paul's mother told him about, that I promised I'd link here: TappingAnd another, for good measure: Woo WooTwitter: @nicholasdagosto #GodsDelicateShow Instagram: @nicholasdagosto #GodsDelicateShowOfficial Website: https://godsdelicateshow.podbean.com/ Music by Sean Whalen, Art by Alexandra Delano
In this ROL Chapel session we have shared with us the testimony of Nicholas. He is currently in the New Life Recovery Program and serving in his internship phase. I am sharing his testimony because it may touch someones life and it could cause them to turn to God just as Nicholas did. Charlie Bresler (Volunteer Executive Director of the non-profit charity The Life You Can Save) visits the studio the morning of a big Los Angeles charity event for TLYCS, and in preparation for Nicholas' speech that night, Charlie gets him to open up about the always-compelling "Would you rather be called Nick or Nicholas" question (note: answer revealed!). Following a plug for Le Pain Quotidien, Charlie talks about his preoccupation with his own death, and the turmoil he sometimes experiences regarding his belief that he will never see his family again in the afterlife. Charlie is in deep reflection about what he views as his greatest challenge - dissolving the pull of his ego towards vanity, while at the same time remaining deeply active in the pursuit of making the world a better place. It's a generous and inspiring interview, full of humor and tragedy and sincerity. Mat Hayes (Actor: Jane The Virgin... Writer/Creator of the autobiographical short film Cognitive) visits, and he and Nicholas promptly start singing the praises of their dear Jessalyn Gilsig, who was on the show previously. Mat was born into a loving, devout Southern Baptist family in Alabama, but at a very young age he knew he was "different" - he was attracted to other males. Cognitive is about an extraordinary moment in his gay coming-of-age story, where a preacher in Mat's youth told his congregation that AIDS was sent by God to kill homosexuals. What does that kind of information do to the mind of a child? Mat is eloquent and full of forgiveness regarding this story, and he has a passion to connect with others, and help where he can. Another passion? Arby's food. Did you know that Nicholas' father is an Arby's franchisee in Omaha, Nebraska??! Something Mat helped me learn more about: The Evangelical movement and its' denominations. Something that blew my mind: The Five Points of Calvinism (aka TULIP). Eliza Clark (Writer/Producer: Y The Last Man, Animal Kingdom, Extant, The Killing) visits the show and immediately starts throwing around her "sexy" voice for the listeners (read: She had a nasty cold). Eliza and Nicholas talk a little about her play QUACK, which is where they met, and Nicholas' turn playing the character Brock, a misogynistic men's rights advocate (a fan favorite). Eliza was raised a staunch Atheist by her (Agnostic?) father, but later in life she discovered that her mother is a woman of faith. The whole family adores and celebrates the rituals and spirit of the Christmas holidays, and Eliza shares openly about how her love of the magic in life shines through in these moments. They each spend some time talking about the difficulties of balancing a desire for your parents' approval, with the competing desire of developing your own individuality and point of view. Also, she doesn't recommend telling your children that they may come back as a dog after they die. Something I read after this interview: Christopher Hitchens' essay "Why Women Aren't Funny." (Eliza's right. It's more offensive than enlightening, and it's not quite funny enough to make up for that discrepancy. But Christopher Hitchens has been a very important resource for me. I'm a big fan.) Will Greenberg (Perfect Harmony, Wrecked, Abby's, The Grinder) is an old friend of Nicholas', and in honor of him Will ate a badass tofu scramble to get ready for the show (Nicholas is a flexitarian). Will is Jewish and was raised in Texas, and although his family participated in a Reformed Jewish religious lifestyle, he does not identify very strongly as being Jewish. He's much more into exploring alternate paths of spirituality, and he speaks in detail about some extraordinary moments of spiritual growth he experienced through the use of LSD and psychedelics. Nicholas has had experiences like this too, and both guys share about how they've seen PHISH a few times together... under the influence. Also, Will reveals how, growing up, you could tell a kids religion by their video game consoles (Nintendo = Christian, Sega = Jewish). Something I screwed up: Apparently, STEEL MAGNOLIAS and FRIED GREEN TOMATOES are not the same movie?? Two current legal changes will soon impact the lives of our LGBTI communities - and people living with HIV. Michael catches up with Fitzroy Legal's Paul Kidd to discuss the Berejiklian NSW government altering consent laws. The law may better protect those assaulted who are unable to clearly rebuke consent. However, the 'communicative model of consent' may impact people who consent with non-verbal communication - especially those in kink and BDSM communities. Later, Michael discusses how people living with HIV will be impacted by forced testing requirements for anyone found spitting at or biting NSW Police with Nic Holas from the Institute of Many. Cody is joined by video producer and podcast host Matthew Gaydos to rediscover the magic of the Biblical Santa Claus (and Biblical Krampus!). You can find your copy of the book online or, yeah, actually, let’s be real, it’s only available online. The Immortal Nicholas by Glenn Beck A thrilling new holiday novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Glenn Beck. BEFORE HE WAS FATHER CHRISTMAS…HE WAS SIMPLY A FATHER. Thirteen-time #1 national bestselling author Glenn Beck realized years ago that somewhere along the way, his four children had become more focused on Santa than the meaning of Christmas. No matter how he tried, he could not redirect their attention away from presents and elves to the manger instead. Glenn didn't want to be the Grinch who spoiled the magic of Kris Kringle, so he had to find a unique way to turn his kids back toward the true meaning of Christmas. He decided the best place to start was by first turning Santa himself back toward Christ. That was when one of America’s best storytellers began to craft a tale that would change everything his kids thought they knew about Santa—the incredible story he went on to tell them that Christmas Eve spans over a thousand years and explains the meaning behind the immortality and generosity of the man named Claus. The Immortal Nicholas has now been expanded and reimagined into this novel for adults; a novel full of drama, history, legend, and heart. From the snowy mountains of Western Asia, to the deserts of Egypt, to Yemen’s elusive frankincense-bearing boswellia trees, this is an epic tale that gives the legend of Santa a long overdue Christ-centered mission. In this novel, Glenn Beck fundamentally transforms the figure that the world now mainly associates with shopping, all while staying true to the real story of the baby who brought redemption and salvation to the entire world. I met Nicholas Johnson this year at the AIGA Awards Gala, and after just a few minutes of speaking with him, I knew I had to have him on the podcast. Nicholas is committed to more representation for designers of color, and that's reflected both through his work and in an upcoming book project. We talked about where Nicholas' desire for representation comes from, and from there we went into a discussion on the notion of a Black design aesthetic, and Nicholas shared the advice that's stuck with him throughout his design journey, as well as what he wants to work on in the next five years. You'll definitely see and hear more from Nicholas in the future! Another Ann absence this week, which would normally mean that Simon and Ste start buying video game equipment that they don't need, but this time they took to opportunity to learn something about themselves. Which was mostly their middle names. Ann did manage to write some news which Simon read out, but he did point out that no jokes were included. Unless there were and Simon was news-shaming Ann. Or maybe Ann just improvs the jokes as she's reading the news out? This week we had the very prepared Nicholas Lovell on as our Super-Special Guest. He was in to talk about his new book - the Pyramid of Games Design - which is aimed at people who make videogames, those who are trying to switch to service-based games, and anyone starting in the industry. He told us how you get people to become superfans of your games, how many layers a game needs, and if losing the narrative in videogames is a Good Thing. But to be honest, we were a little disappointed that Team OLL wasn't acknowledged in Nicholas' previous book The Curve (which invented FIFA's Ultimate Team mode). Surely this would be rectified in his new book? We also found out that Ste has been spying on Mrs Graham, how easy it is to put on a bandana (Hi D Perry), if P Moulinex invented Fortnite, how Ste tells the temperature, and Simon couldn't remember. Cheerio! Nicholas Wolpe grew up in exile in the United Kingdom. In the early 2000's he took the first steps that would eventually lead to the development of the site in Rivonia into the Liliesleaf Museum. Nicholas and I chatted about how the museum and its contents have evolved over time, and what a personal and cathartic journey it has been for him. Nicholas' father Harold was one of the 20 activists arrested on the site in July 11,1963. Nicholas is concerned that South Africans are losing their history and that knowledge about the liberation struggle is important in creating a national identity in South Africa. He says that the past is our link to the present and our future. Read more about the Lilliesleaf Museum at the link below. http://www.liliesleaf.co.za/

From Austria to Australia - because of my German background, I was able to pronounce Nicholas' surname correctly :-) Dr. Nicholas Gruen shares the story of his father that got him interested in It was a good start into a very entertaining conversation on economics, politics and what we can do differently to solve some of today's problems and challenges. As the CEO of Lateral Economics, Dr Nicholas Gruen is used to think differently, and that's often a good thing to get new perspectives and views. His ideas and models to address the challenge that members of parliaments are strongly influenced by party politics are fascinating to listen to. And there is more. So enjoy the conversation as much as I did. More about Dr Nicholas Gruen Nicholas Gruen is a policy economist, entrepreneur and commentator on our economy, society and innovation. Today we are talking to Nicholas Zakas. He is a front-end engineer, author, and speaker working at Box, and before that, he worked at Yahoo! for almost five years, where he was front-end tech lead for the Yahoo! homepage and a contributor to the YUI library. He regularly blogs, and for a recent blog-post he conducted a little research on how people use GitHub in a company internal context, so I invited him onto the show to ask about his findings. Welcome to episode 87 of Connectivity, or as we are calling it, "Episode One." Hope there is no confusion with the actual episode one from two years ago, but this is the true "Episode One." Because it's the only "One" you'll need! That is, until it is obsolete and we move on to the next iteration. Then it is "One" for the dump or the back of your closet somewhere. If you hadn't guessed, our main segment this week deals with the announcement of the Xbox One as well as last week's Nintendo Direct. Scott, Neal, and special guest Donald Theriault (from Nintendo Free Radio!) break down both events and look ahead to E3 and more dog gifs. After that, we have two bonus segments for you. First up is the return of The Dr. Jonathan Metts' Crazy Fun Time Space Show! This week, in lieu of answering questions from you fine listeners, Dr. Metts has me take a quiz about rockets he wrote years ago for a sophomore college class he was teaching. If you'd like to play along at home and see just how much YOU know about rockets, the quiz can be found here: https://docs.google.com/a/nintendoworldreport.com/document/d/1zgiQeTPpWFNq0u5xqRSNih9y9U2uEchEcSlOl3t0Fi4/pub Bonus segment number two is all about the season finale of Doctor Who. Patrick, Scott, Nicholas, and Amanda return to discuss the wacky Doctor's latest exploits and postulate about what the final few minutes mean for the future of Who. SPOILER WARNING!!! Also, be sure to check out Amanda's portfolio for plenty of excellent Doctor Who inspired art (http://supinternets.com) AND check out Nicholas' excellent Doctor Who shorts he recorded with some friends (http://youtu.be/xAyw4g0X98s). He's the best Doctor of them all. That's it for this week! Send us your listener mail to Connectivity@nintendoworldreport.com. What did you think about the Xbox One announcement? What it does it mean for the future of the Wii U? Tell us what you think! See you next week for Episode 88, or "Episode 2"!
