The Canadian pop duo Tegan and Sara Quin have been in the public eye for more than 25 years, during which they've released 10 studio albums and sold more than a million records. But for nearly 15 years, they've been quietly grappling with an elaborate catfishing scheme that's changed their lives, careers and relationships. Now, they've decided to go public about it in a new documentary, “Fanatical: The Catfishing of Tegan and Sara,” which explores fandom, parasocial relationships and celebrity. Tegan and Sara join Tom Power to share their story.

Superstar Elton John commemorated the 50th anniversary of his successful songwriting partnership with Bernie Taupin with an ultimate greatest hits compilation entitled 'Diamonds,' and took Stephen through his entire catalogue (Original Air Date: November 13th, 2017). Six-time GRAMMY award-winner Brandi Carlile tells Stephen about the trials she faced navigating her faith journey as a young queer woman. Find that story and more in her new memoir, 'Broken Horses' (Original Air Date: April 6th, 2021). Next up, they've been telling the story of their lives separately for 20 years, but rarely agreed on the details, so musicians Tegan & Sara Quin decided to work together on their memoir 'High School' (Original Air Date: September 27th, 2019). On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, our guests begin as strangers and end their conversation as family: It's Pamela Adlon chatting with Tegan and Sara Quin. Adlon has had an incredible career over the past 40 or so years; no matter what your pop culture diet, she has probably sneaked into your consciousness one way or another. Maybe you have vague memories of her character on The Facts of Life from the early ‘80s, or perhaps her roles on Californication and Louie in more recent years. Adlon has also had an incredible shadow career doing voices in animated shows, where she's best known as Bobby Hill on King of the Hill. But perhaps the culmination of all that fantastic work is Better Things, the show that Adlon created, executive-produced, starred in, and let's face it, gave birth to. Better Things just concluded its fifth and final season, and it stuck the landing so well. It's one of those shows that hits that rare mixture of funny and true—and it definitely struck a nerve with the other half of today's Talkhouse talk: Tegan and Sara. Tegan and Sara started making music as teenagers, and given that they're twin sisters, it's no wonder that they were immediately in sync with each other. The duo were sort of flung into the big time immediately, being signed to Neil Young's record label and opening for him when they were basically still kids. But some sage advice that you'll hear about in this chat helped Tegan and Sara navigate what's become a fruitful and varied career: They've made a ton of great music, stuck their heads into the mainstream here and there, and kept their vision intact. They've also written a memoir called High School, which was recently adapted into an Amazon TV show. They're unabashed with their love and respect for Better Things, which may have seeped into their own show. Their latest album is called Crybaby, the memoir and TV show are both called High School, and they've got a new graphic memoir called Junior High coming out later this year. Check out “Yellow” from Crybaby. In this delightful conversation, Tegan and Sara gush a little bit about Better Things and Adlon in general, and in turn Adlon offers to join their family. They talk about their various creative endeavors, the niceness of Neil Young, Sara's recent parenthood, the “hairy edge” that Better Things walked, and lots more. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Pamela Adlon, Tegan Quin, and Sara Quin for chatting. Before Tegan and Sara sat down to make Crybaby, they had to navigate a series of breakups—with their label, their management, and (almost) with each other. “This is our breakup record,” says Sara Quin, “but we're not going to break up. We're siblings. We can't.” In the turmoil that followed, Tegan and Sara rebuilt their professional team, repaired their relationship, and completely reinvented their collaborative songwriting process for Crybaby, one of their most exciting releases yet. In this episode of Object of Sound, Tegan and Sara talk to Hanif about tenderness, tantrums, and the delight of destroying everything so you can make it all over again. To close the episode, Hanif guides us through a selection of breakup songs. Stephanie Joline is an Indigenous writer, director, and producer based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Her Indigenous roots come from her mother who is Inuit from Labrador; her father is French Acadian from the South shore of Nova Scotia. Equally adept at film and television, Stephanie's stories provoke conversation, break boundaries, and are deeply rooted in inclusivity and feminism. Her feature films include Night Blooms (starring Jessica Clement and Nick Stahl), a coming-of-age story set in the 1990s; and Play Your Gender, a documentary that pulls back the curtain on gender bias in the music industry, featuring interviews with Patty Schemel, Melissa Auf Der Maur, and Sara Quin. Stephanie has also directed for television and streaming platforms (Stream Me 2020, Amazon Prime; Farm Crime 2020 CBC Gem; Spirit Talker 2019, APTN). In 2020 she was awarded the Irving Avrich Award from TIFF recognizing rising Canadian talent. The following year she was long-listed for the DGC Discovery Award, and in 2022 she was nominated for her first Canadian Screen Award for best directing in the factual television category. Stephanie's feature, Night Blooms, is a gritty coming-of-age story set in the 1990s about 17-year-old Carly and her love affair with her best friend's Dad. An emotionally charged narrative that navigates the moral murkiness of agency, consent, and accountability. https://www.instagram.com/stephjoline/ (Find out more @stephjoline) https://www.instagram.com/night_blooms_movie/ (@night_blooms_movie)

Meet Sara Quin, a self-described queer woman and activist who also happens to be a musician. (I'm loathe to write that she's “one half of the duo, Tegan and Sara” because as a twin, Sara's not 50% of a pair – she's 100% Sara, and she has a sister who's 100% Tegan, and they're in a band together). In this free-flowing episode, Sara and I talk about what it's like to seek healthcare as someone in the public eye. We both utter the phrase “superfamous vagina,” which in context, will make total and complete sense when you listen to the episode. We talk about how it feels to not have the comforting cloak of anonymity during intensely private moments like sitting at the bedside of a dying loved one or flying on an airplane while grieving a loss. Along the way, Sara and I chat about body image, breasts, Instagram, cats, family, vulnerability, and Sara's work with The Tegan and Sara Foundation and Queer Health Access. Cameron sits down with musician Sara Quin to discuss being friends with straight guys, parental influence, and how style and appearance can impact identity.
Hi. There’s a very good chance this is your first time listening to Juvenalia. We hope you like it. We talk to interesting people about pieces of pop culture that were important to them when they were children. In this episode, Alan and Sarah talk to Sara Quin from Tegan and Sara about Madonna’s Truth Or Dare tour documentary and all kinds of things that spring from that. We were very excited to talk to Sara and she was even more of a joy than we could have hoped. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did. If you’re listening to this when it comes out then Tegan and Sara are playing in Vicar Street this Sunday February 19th and you should go, it’ll be great. If you liked this episode of Juvenalia maybe you’d consider subscribing on the podcast app of your choice and possible even leave a review? It’s ok if you don’t. For our fifteenth episode, we thought we would do something a little different and tackle two incredible games. Made several years apart by completely different teams while using the same, iconic gameplay mechanic, which is the better masterpiece: Portal or Portal 2? We devote our first versus episode to this argument for the ages. Canadian twin sisters Tegan and Sara Quin usually traffic in fizzy, punky pop music, so it's a refreshing twist to see them pop up at the 2011 Newport Folk Festival in Newport, R.I. The smart and outspoken pair will throw an extra curveball when they show their faces Saturday: They're translating their spiky music into acoustic arrangements. The mission is to highlight the sturdy songcraft behind Tegan and Sara's cultishly adored music, without sacrificing any of the hard-earned potency.
