En la sección “Una cierta mirada” del Festival de Cannes, la cineasta costarricense Valentina Maurel presentó su segundo largometraje titulado Siempre soy tu animal materno.   Después de haber estudiado en Bélgica, Elsa vuelve a Costa Rica para ver a su hermana Amalia, hundida en el ocio y el esoterismo, y a su madre, autora de poemas eróticos aferrada a su juventud. Todo en sus modos de vida irrita a Elsa y a su raciocinio europeo. En su segundo largometraje, Siempre soy tu animal materno, la cineasta costarricense Valentina Maurel pone en escena el desfase cultural de quienes regresan a su país de origen después de haber vivido en Europa. Esa distancia atraviesa a la protagonista, pero también a la propia directora. Maurel explica que le interesaba trabajar “con esa perspectiva del europeo que mira el trópico y América Central como desde otro lugar. Y también lo vivo con un cierto nivel de culpa”.En la película, ese choque se encarna en las dos hermanas: la mayor, que volvió con otra forma de ver el mundo, y la menor, que escoge un camino opuesto. “Hay un personaje de hermana en esta película que es como la que decide tomar un camino muy distinto de la mayor. No estudia y, viniendo de una familia artística atea, decide creer en Dios y abrazar un cierto esoterismo como un poco folclórico de América Latina, y la hermana mayor lo ve con un cierto nivel de condescendencia. Yo creo que esa era mi forma de criticar un poquito ese desfase, ese lugar en el que se sitúa de pronto el latinoamericano que se fue a Europa y que ve su latinoamericanidad como una inferioridad”. Daniela Marín y Ángel Villegas interpretan a Elsa y Amalia, dos hermanas diametralmente opuestas que chocan como hielo y fuego. Marín describe a Elsa como alguien que parece fría, pero que en realidad está desbordada por el regreso: “Es una frialdad, pero no de ella, sino también como del lugar que la recibe. Sentía abrazada al personaje. Verdaderamente Valentina siempre tiene esta frase que es ‘No juzgues a tu personaje porque si no, entonces nadie lo salva'. Yo decía: claro, es que está pasando por tantas cosas, es como que todo se le viene encima y nada es igual. Y ella quiere intentar agarrar un poco los hilos de la familia, intentar salvar a estas personas. Pero en realidad ella ya no calza tampoco en ningún lado, también está perdida”. Ángel Villegas se reconoce en la transición de Amalia a la adultez: “Sí me identifiqué mucho, además, porque de ahí comparto misma edad que Amalia, cumplir 19 años y confrontar la vida adulta cuando se sigue sintiendo como en esta prisión de una niña de 15 años. Sigue siendo rebelde”. A medida que avanza la película, también se revela la profundidad de la madre, una mujer que ha abandonado su carrera artística e intenta darle un nuevo soplo ahora que sus hijas son adultas. El título nace de un verso escrito por la propia madre de la directora: “Siempre soy un animal materno. Es el verso de un poema de mi mamá que es poeta”, explica Maurel. La escritura del filme se cruzó con su propia experiencia de maternidad: “Mientras estaba escribiéndola me volví mamá. Yo tuve una bebé y de pronto ahí entré como un poco en pánico con el tema de la maternidad y creo que todas mis dudas sobre si iba a poder hacer la película o si iba a poder seguir siendo directora, porque estando en la vulnerabilidad en la que te pone ser mamá, contaminaron un poco la escritura”. Siempre soy tu animal materno, de Valentina Maurel, fue presentada en la sección Una cierta mirada del Festival de Cine de Cannes.

González García (אוריאל בן אברהם), Universidad de Puerto Rico en Mayagüez, was published in Perspectivas sobre cuestiones globales in 2024. The text examines the historical roots of the Puerto Rican Jewish community, from its beginnings during Spanish colonization in the 15th century, with emphasis on the arrival of Sephardic converts to the island. The author examines the diplomatic relations between the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the State of Israel. The article includes interviews with two community leaders of the Puerto Rican Jewish community: Shula Feldkran, an Israeli and former president of Temple Beth Shalom; and Rabbi Hernán D. Rustein, the first permanent rabbi of Latin American origin at Temple Beth Shalom. González García (אוריאל בן אברהם) is a Jew of Sephardic heritage, and his areas of interest are Middle Eastern politics, Zionism and the origins of the State of Israel and Jewish history. This interview includes Jeffrey Herlihy-Mera, Catedrático de Humanidades, Universidad de Puerto Rico-Mayagüez, Dariel U.
