We open in an unlikely place: Sax Rohmer and his hugely popular, though now mostly rejected Fu Manchu novels. Why did Kenneth Grant choose Rohmer's Dope, alongside Richard Marsh's beloved gothic-exotic horror classic The Beetle, as reference texts for his monumental book The Ninth Arch? Was Fu Manchu born on a ouija board? Why did CU favorite Eugenia Macer-Story use the metaphor of Fu Manchu vs. the "lonesome cowboy" in her genius examination of the UFO phenomenon? Did any of those Theosophists ever really visit Tibet? The tension between so-called eastern and western mystical traditions may be the driving force of what we call occultism, and in this episode we lay the groundwork for a series which will investigate this concept in detail.

We lost a real legend in Russ Nicholson this year. I can honestly say that Russ and his work sneak into my mind in short order whenever I talk about fantasy art at length, no matter the period. When we recorded this interview back in 2019, it was apparently his first appearance on a podcast, which seems bizarre considering how large his work looms over the hobby, then and now. I'll never not be bummed about a lack of Russ Nicholson in the world. Anyway, we couldn't record last week, so we thought it would be cool to bring this one out from the vault, a little in memoriam for his passing earlier this year. Original Show Notes:  This week, we talk to the incomparable artist Russ Nicholson. Russ has created countless iconic illustrations for tabletop RPGs - you probably best know his work from the original Dungeons & Dragons Fiend Folio or from countless fantasy gamebooks, like the Fighting Fantasy series. We chat about his work, his career, Ouija boards, Scottish accents and more in what, as far as Russ can recall, is his first podcast interview ever! A few notes directly from Russ after the fact: "Sorry about my memory and going off at side tangents so often but I enjoyed that...funny I have never talked in regards to the source of my artwork about the 'happenings' at our old house when I was growing up before. At least as I age, these awarenesses are rare and our present bungalow is so new there is nothing directly 'there.' Now artists - there are a few I especially rate (although I made a point of never copying) - Albrecht Durer, the Brueghals, Rembrandt, El Greco, Hals, Velazquez, the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, Mucha, Klimt, Toulouse Lautrec, Doré, Beardsley and Rackham, to name a few. Also pulps - Sax Rohmer, Howard, The Shadow, Weird Tales, Black Mask stories, Poe, Edgar Wallace, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Merrit, Hamilton, Jules Verne, Rider Haggard and the old pulp serials I saw at Saturday morning children's cinema - loved it all. From age ten on, when I left the countryside life for life in the city, I read a lot (up until then my mother thought I didn't read anything except comics). And that silent film I was trying to talk about - it had something similar, where a man is sitting by a rock pool (?) and these squidgy tentacled things (similar to the Grell toy Stu sent me) come out of the water and drag him to his doom. Scared me as a lad but I was in my teens so no screaming attacks (laf) and am still not fond." * * * Stu's book, Monsters, Aliens, and Holes in the Ground is for sale now! Buy it! Patreon? Discord? On Thursday August 6th, 2020 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will present a review of William Leonard Pickard's magisterial novelized biography “The Rose of Paracelsus”(2019). This 650 page masterwork is already considered literature by the academic community. Like Mallory's “The Morte de Arthur” “The Rose” was entirely written in prison. It recounts Pickard's academic, scientific, and extra-legal career from the early 1960s until his arrest and subsequent imprisonment in 2000. It is beautifully written, fast paced and well structured. It is subtitled “On Secrets and Sacraments” which aptly describes what it delivers. Pickard was not only a psychedelic alchemist, he was also an intelligence asset (say researcher) for the Ivy League think tanks and indirectly for government agents. So conspiracy theory and even UFO buffs will be pulling quotes from The Rose for the next decade. Pickard connected with an international network of psychedelic alchemists and visited each in a world tour that reads like a James Bond adventure. Returning to the U.S. he visited his mentor the venerable psychedelic sage, Sasha Shulgin, who warned him against a demonic cultist who inhabited an abandoned underground missile base used for an LSD laboratory and an orgiastic temple. But like a character in a Richard Shaver or Sax Rohmer story Leonard Pickard was lured into this hellish underworld where psychedelics were used to en-slave and abuse young women. And because this cult had better government connections than Pickard, he was set up to take the rap for their criminal activities. He was given two life sentences in Federal Prison. Fortunately he has just been released and we hope he will be listening to this broadcast. So. Turn on, Tune in, and learn what's under the rose.

The legendary Harry Alan Towers: independent film producer, part-time pimp and full-time opportunist. Britain's answer to Roger Corman, Towers started off the 60s believing that your brain is the most powerful sexual organ. By the end of the Sixties, he accepted – like everybody else in the biz did – that, nope, your junk is. Turned on by the literary bone fides he'd get by adapting great books into great movies, Towers instead turned his attention instead to noted hate-crime enthusiast Sax Rohmer. His pet project focused on the most evil man who never lived: Dr. Fu Manchu. In this episode, Bart and Jenna sidestep Bootleg Bond by focusing on Fu Manchu films, a revival franchise that never would have existed if not for ‘60s Bond Mania. Jenna moans and bitches about how much she can't stand these admittedly dated and racist films even if she kinda secretly enjoys the pop-mod styled misandrist villains. And to his utter delight, Bart finally gets his vengeance for all of the Eurospy trash Jenna forced him to watch. Jace chats with writer B. Clay Moore and the Zoop campaign for Whistling Skull. This is a property B. Clay co-created alongside Tony Moore and it was at one time tied into the DC Universe and the classic Justice Society team. Re-Mastered for a whole new edition showcasing Tony's amazing art, this is your chance to get the complete story ... so far. Could this talented creators return to this rich world, with it's intriguing plot and pulp adventure feel? Listen in and hear what B. Clay's thoughts are on that very thing!   The Whistling Skull In a remote village in Switzerland, the townsfolk face a terrible threat. People keep disappearing without warning or explanation, and the authorities are powerless to help. But the secret organization known as the Skeleton is aware that something sinister is going on, and they've dispatched their top agents to investigate: the eerie crimefighter known as the Whistling Skull!   With his assistant Knuckles at his side, the Skull can draw on the benefits of decades of crimefighting to uncover what's happening in the village. But this is not the same hero who went on all of those adventures. The last Whistling Skull disappeared after fighting side-by-side with the heroes of his generation, and though his predecessor has the memories and skills of every man who has come before him...he's never been on a mission before.   Can the new Whistling Skull prevail when faced with pure evil? Or will the horrors that were inflicted on the village soon spread to the entire world?   From an Entertainment Weekly review:   The Whistling Skull is at once a throwback to pulp fiction of the 1930s and 1940s (think Doc Savage and Sax Rohmer's Fu Manchu novels) and a witty, grim and poignant tale.   The Whistling Skull and his sidekick, Knuckles, are actually William Massey and Nigel Singleton, Brit boyhood friends who've grown up to fight Nazis and other criminals in 1940s Europe. Tony Harris, who has done such marvelous artwork on books including DC's Starman, is superb (along with colorist Dave McCaig) at conjuring up foggy menace, using dark greens, grays, and sallow yellows as his primary colors to (barely) illuminate figures drawn with lantern jaws and thick bristly eyebrows of determination.   B. Clay Moore's script has The Whistling Skull roaming Europe driving a gigantic Art Deco auto dubbed The Battlewagon. Skull and Knuckles out of costume are like creations born of a cross between Arthur Conan Doyle and P.G. Wodehouse. The mysteries are well thought-out; the humor is boisterous; the crime-fighting is bone-crunching.   ***These characters were originally brought into the DC Comics universe through the JSA Liberty Files: The Whistling Skull series, but the story has been tweaked for this Zoop campaign by Moore and Harris, re-establishing the world of the Whistling Skull (and Knuckles) as originally intended.

Trina Robbins, in conversation with Richard Wolinsky. A legend in comic book circles, an artist at a time when hardly any women drew comics, Trina Robbins discusses her latest book, a memoir, “Last Girl Standing,” which deals with her life as an artist, author, and clothing designer. She was the first woman to edit a comic book created by women, “It Ain't Me Babe,” the first woman to draw “Wonder Woman,” and the single most influential historian chronicling the women who created comics and cartoons. In this interview, she also talks about her other recent books including a history of women drawing comics during World War II, a graphic novel version of a short story collection originally written by her father in Yiddish, and a graphic novel based on a work by British author Sax Rohmer. Trina Robbins was clothing designer for Los Angeles rock and roll bands in the 1960s and for the Warhol factory in New York. She also was a regular contributor to “Wimmens Comix,” a series of comic books created by women from the 1970s through 1990s.              The post Trina Robbins: Last Girl Standing appeared first on KPFA.
