The HBS hosts struggle for recognition.[NOTE: This is a REPLAY episode, first aired on August 11, 2023. The HBS hosts will be back with new episodes for Season 11 starting on September 13, 2024!]The dialectic of lordship and bondage, more commonly known as the “Master/Slave dialectic,” is a moment in a much longer and exceedingly difficult-to-read (much less understand!) text by G.W.F. Hegel entitled The Phenomenology of Spirit. It's probably a passage that is referenced in a wide number of fields– psychology, sociology, anthropology, history, literary analysis, any number of “area studies,” and even economics-- though very few of the scholars who reference it have slogged all the way through Hegel's Phenomenology. Nevertheless, like Plato's Allegory of the Cave from the Republic and Nietzsche's story about the lambs and the birds of prey from Genealogy of Morals, both of which we've discussed before on this podcast, Hegel's dialectic of Lordship and Bondage manages to capture, in a concise and powerful way, something both intuitively true and yet, at the same time, utterly mystifying. This week we ask the question, why has this passage become the hit single off of the dense concept album that is the Phenomenology.Full episode notes available at this link:https://hotelbarpodcast.com/podcast/episode-105-the-master-slave-dialectic-------------------If you enjoy Hotel Bar Sessions podcast, please be sure to subscribe and submit a rating/review!Follow us on Twitter @hotelbarpodcast, on Facebook, and subscribe to our YouTube channel!
It's The Stacks Book Club Day, and we're discussing Master Slave Husband Wife by Ilyon Woo. We're joined by actor and author Jay Ellis to explore the story of The Crafts, a husband-and-wife duo who escaped slavery by pretending to be a white man and his slave in 1848. We discuss why we think this story fell out of the collective consciousness, how the horrors of slavery are often minimized, and the complicated nature of familial relationships in the midst of chattel slavery. Be sure to listen to the end of today's episode to find out what our next book club pick will be. Monday morning live with Natasa Denman featuring one of her amazing authors, Davina Woods. Davina Woods was born and raised in Brisbane. Although she always knew she was Aboriginal, it wasn't until the early 2000s that she discovered her Kuku-Djungan ancestry. She attended local schools and achieved a Diploma of Teaching in 1979 from the North Brisbane College of Advanced Education. In 1984, Davina became one of the first five First Nations teachers to join the inaugural Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Unit of the Queensland Education Department (QED). As a writer, Davina's first article, "Why Aboriginal Studies," was published in QED's professional journal, QUEST. In 2000, she contributed her first chapter to the book Aboriginal Women by Degrees: Their Stories of the Journey Towards Academic Achievement, edited by Professor Mary Ann Bin-Sallik. This was the first of several book chapters Davina has written and published. In 2006, her poem "Urban Songlines" won the Victorian Indigenous Art Cultural Heritage Award. Over the years, Davina has completed a Bachelor of Education, a Graduate Certificate in Aboriginal Studies, and a Master of Arts, all while working and raising her children. She left QED in 1990 to become the Federal Aboriginal Education Officer of the Australian Education Union, which required moving to Melbourne. In the late 1990s, she worked at a Melbourne university, completed a Graduate Diploma in Tertiary Education, and earned a PhD. The prestigious literary journal Meanjin published her essay “Being Educated,” which recounts her early experiences of racism and the moment she realized her duty to educate non-Indigenous people about the First Peoples of Australia. Following her realization and receiving the Most Outstanding Research Student award for her PhD, she knew she had to fulfill her promise to her family to document their mutual grandfather's story and their legacy of Aboriginality. She has since published a book with the assistance of Ultimate 48 Hour Books, telling the story of her maternal grandfather who, as a child, survived a massacre in 1881. He was then taken in by an Irish couple, for whom he worked until the man died in 1908. Ilyon Woo's Master Slave Husband Wife: An Epic Journey from Slavery to Freedom (Simon and Schuster, 2023) tells the remarkable true story of Ellen and William Craft, who escaped slavery through daring, determination, and disguise, with Ellen passing as a wealthy, disabled White man and William posing as “his” slave. In 1848, a year of international democratic revolt, a young, enslaved couple, Ellen and William Craft, achieved one of the boldest feats of self-emancipation in American history. Posing as master and slave, while sustained by their love as husband and wife, they made their escape together across more than 1,000 miles, riding out in the open on steamboats, carriages, and trains that took them from bondage in Georgia to the free states of the North. Along the way, they dodged slave traders, military officers, and even friends of their enslavers, who might have revealed their true identities. The tale of their adventure soon made them celebrities, and generated headlines around the country. Americans could not get enough of this charismatic young couple, who traveled another 1,000 miles criss-crossing New England, drawing thunderous applause as they spoke alongside some of the greatest abolitionist luminaries of the day—among them Frederick Douglass and William Wells Brown. But even then, they were not out of danger. With the passage of an infamous new Fugitive Slave Act in 1850, all Americans became accountable for returning refugees like the Crafts to slavery. Then yet another adventure began, as slave hunters came up from Georgia, forcing the Crafts to flee once again—this time from the United States, their lives and thousands more on the line and the stakes never higher. With three epic journeys compressed into one monumental bid for freedom, Master Slave Husband Wife is an American love story—one that would challenge the nation's core precepts of life, liberty, and justice for all—one that challenges us even now. “I think the question has to do with American memory and what, as a nation, we are prioritizing in that memory…” Master Slave Husband Wife by Ilyon Woo blends history and biography with the story of Ellen and William Craft, two remarkable people who escaped slavery, and through danger and constant challenges would become abolitionists and heroes in American history. Woo joins us to talk about her research process, the importance of preserving our past, the ever-changing notion of history and more with Miwa Messer, host of Poured Over. This episode of Poured Over was hosted by Executive Producer Miwa Messer and mixed by Harry Liang. Ilyon Woo, non-white female, visits Elliot Bay Books in Seattle, Washington to promote her brand new book: Master Slave Husband Wife (2023). Gus T. learned about this book when searching for books published the previous calendar year. Woo's work of non-fiction made a number of lists for best non-fiction of the year. The book examines William and Ellen Craft, a pair of 19th century black slaves in the state of Georgia. Ellen Craft is the product of rape and has a White father. Consequently, she is pale enough to be accepted as a White person - so called "passing." After years of White Terrorism and torture on a Georgia slave plantation, William and Ellen take 4 days to concoct an escape plan. Ellen uses her lack of melanin and a fancy pair of pants to fake being an elderly White Man. William is "his" faithful negro slave, and the courageous pair makes haste for the so called north. Woo gives lots of details - including the northern speaking tours William and Ellen gave with the fellow slaves and orators Frederick Douglass and William Wells Brown. Even once the two were miles from the plantation, they could be stolen at any time. And because melanin deficient Ellen is "White presenting," her being married to dark-skinned William means that northern Whites often think she's a 19th century White Woman shacking up with a negro male. You know when you have a conversation that provides you with a framework of a problem – one you may not have even known existed – and it opens your eyes in a whole new way? Yeah, today is one of those conversations. Because it helps look at questions like this: Do we really know what freedom is? How about liberty? And if we don't know what those concepts mean, how do we know if we've lost them? And what role does the carceral system have in all of this? This might seem like a lot, but in a year in which we're questioning everything - democracy and America, to name a few - if we don't know what those concepts mean, how can we imagine a world full of them? That's one of the questions that today's guest asks - and answers - through her new book, Of Greed and Glory, which takes a look at her brother's incarceration in Angola and uses that as a jumping-off point to ask some larger questions that, in all honesty, we need to be asking ourselves if we really want to be engaged in this fight. After you listen to this episode, please tell several friends about it, and look to support people doing this work in your community. As always, we'd love to hear what resonates with you - please do reach out and let us know. What to listen for: How incarcerating an individual is actually incarcerating a family Does America even want to be a democracy anymore? The master-slave dynamic – including how that shows up in patriarchy, and yes, why we believe women understand the significance of this conversation. Imagine if you had to disguise your race and gender or risk capture and death? This is exactly what happened to William and Ellen Craft, an enslaved married couple in the Deep South during Pre-Civil War times. In 1848, Ellen, whose mother was half-white, disguised herself as a white male slaveowner and her husband, William, played the part of her slave as they traveled North to escape slavery. Since Ellen couldn't read or write, she tried to bypass any nosy questioners by having her arm in a sling and pretending to be sick. With various close calls and harrowing situations, they eventually made it North and became activists for anti-slavery. Through it all, their love for each other kept them safe, physically, psychologically, and spiritually. Join celebrated author, Ilyon Woo, and Dr. Avila as they discuss the amazing lives and journey of William and Ellen Craft on Love University, based on Woo's NY times bestselling Master Slave Husband Wife. It is a story that will melt your heart and inspire you to reach for your own mental freedom.

GWF Hegel is one of the most difficult philosophers in the western canon, but today we' attempt to demystify him. In this episode, we'll break down Hegel's phenomenology, the dialectic, and the Hegelian understanding of desire. Our concrete entrypoint into the thought of Hegel is his famous chapter, The Master-Slave Dialectic. Deleuze argued that Nietzsche's work constitutes a rejection of Hegel: his master and slave morality can be read as a direct rebuke to Hegel's interpretation of this very same power relation. In order to prepare for our reading of Deleuze, we're going to first tangle with Hegel on his own terms, and understand the very different way in which he approaches the questions of consciousness, morality and perspective. In researching this episode, Nathan Widder's lectures on Hegel and Deleuze were very helpful, as was Justin Burke's.

We start with Edge's experience with this particular kink identity, thinking about how kink identities, in general, can shift and change and evolve. Then during our Q&A we think about how to wear leather and still look submissive as well as how the greater inclusion of trans and genderqueer peoples has impacted the community. Of course, I'll adjust for British spelling and provide a bit more detail: In this remarkable episode, I have the pleasure of interviewing Phil. Phil is the accomplished author of the new book titled "Light and Shadow: The Psychology of Master/slave Relationships". Drawing from his vast experience as a practitioner and coach in the realm of D/s dynamics, Phil delves deeply into his beliefs and the frameworks he advocates for, enriching these relationships. I would wholeheartedly recommend his book. It's not just a trove of insightful knowledge, but also offers tangible, practical methods for implementation. In addition to his book, Phil is the brains behind the website, masterslavelifestyle.com. For those who podcasts, he also hosts his own available under the same name. It's my sincere hope that this episode offers listeners a new refreshing way to enhance their understanding of kink. The HBS hosts struggle for recognition. The dialectic of lordship and bondage, more commonly known as the “Master/Slave dialectic,” is a moment in a much longer and exceedingly difficult-to-read (much less understand!) text by G.W.F. This week we ask the question, why has this passage become the hit single off of the dense concept album that is the Phenomenology.Full episode notes available at this link:https://hotelbarpodcast.com/podcast/episode-105-the-master-slave-dialectic -------------------If you enjoy Hotel Bar Sessions podcast, please be sure to subscribe and submit a rating/review!Follow us on Twitter @hotelbarpodcast, on Facebook, and subscribe to our YouTube channel!

The City Of Brotherly Love has been home to countless legendary Pearl Jam shows and moments throughout their history. As a matter of fact, the night after this show was the show in which they they played the album Ten in full. Which makes some people forget about night 1 from 2016 due to the magnitude of the Ten banner being raised. But what good are we if we can't give every great show a spotlight on this podcast? Because there is no reason why this one shouldn't be discussed as an all-time classic show, and we're here to prove that. With the knowledge of the album getting a run, this show was constructed so that Philly people would get to see some rarities, including three that haven't been played since that date - Gonna See My Friend, In The Moonlight and Education. But it didn't matter what they played, because the crowd was on fire the entire night. Right from the top when opening up with Once (including the Master/Slave intro that they would of course repeat again the following night), you knew that the crowd was going to make this a night to remember. We'll go in depth on Love Boat Captain, In My Tree, Jeremy, Crown Of Thorns and Crazy Mary where the crowd is at the top of their game. Also, how about a concert wedding up in Suite 225? This episode's question of the week is based off of the rare songs that we'll talk about. We came up with a system for scoring your rarest songs you've seen, and we'll calculate the numbers and share them with you! On that note, our Gear Guru, Javier, tackles a different approach to rare songs and discusses what the musical reason for not playing them is. Master Slave Husband Wife: An Epic Journey from Slavery to Freedom by Ilyon Woo The remarkable true story of Ellen and William Craft, who escaped slavery through daring, determination, and disguise, with Ellen passing as a wealthy, disabled White man and William posing as “his” slave.
