Today, I am joined by Annette and Graham Henry of Henry & Henry. They are the Vegan Breathing Coaches. Annette and Graham are a husband and wife team who set out to educate and inspire others who also wish to make life changes. They run talks and classes, including meditation classes, but primarily around food, and have provided lunches for those curious to know more about how they eat. Trained in raw food science and preparation by Robert & Karin Dina and in Buteyko Breathing by Patrick McKeown. Annette and Graham provide breathing re-education and plant-based nutrition workshops both for the beneficiaries of Salus Fatigue Foundation and as part of programs offered by Salus externally.  In this episode you hear their story, not just their vegan journey but how they came together, changed each other's lives, and embarked on this mission of helping human animals and other than human animals all while making the world a kinder, gentler, more compassionate place. What is Buteyko breathing? How can Buteyko breathing support kids with ADHD? How long does it take after beginning a practice of Buteyko breathing to see improvements?  In this week's episode of the Soaring Child podcast, Dr. Miles Nichols joins the show to tell us all about Buteyko breathing.  Dr. Miles Nichols is a functional medicine doctor specializing in Lyme, mold illness, gut, thyroid, and autoimmunity. After Dr. Miles personally struggled with chronic fatigue in his early 20's, he dedicated himself to figure out the root causes. He suffered with and recovered from thyroid dysfunction, autoimmunity, a gut infection, Lyme co-infections, and mold illness. Dr. Miles has authored two books. He founded the Medicine with Heart functional medicine clinic in Colorado as well as the Medicine with Heart Institute that trains other doctors in functional medicine. When you start to notice your heart rate increasing, that's a sign to back off a little bit.” “For most people, between 5 to maybe 8 breaths per minute for most people is going to be a rate for most people where we see heart rate variability.” ”For children as a starting point, it's great to make it into a game and to do it together.” ”Sometimes as little as 4-6 weeks is enough to retrain the brain for base level breathing.” ”Within 1-3 months, we are seeing significant shifts if there is regular training.” How to Connect with Dr. Miles Nichols Facebook - https://facebook.com/medicinewithheart Instagram - https://instagram.com/medicinewithheart Functional Medicine Clinic - https://MedicineWithHeart.com Functional Medicine Training Institute for Practitioners - https://MindBodyFunctionalMedicine.com      Dana Kay Resources:

Buteyko focuses the importance of breathing through the nose rather than the mouth. In the dental chair we see the problems associated with mouth breathing. They include the gut microbiome, neurotransmitters, and nerve conduction pathways.New research is illustrating that the gut-brain axis is an extremely complex network of cross-talk.This communication is important for things like digestion, metabolism, and how we feel mentally. When there are problems with this communication, it can cause issues like digestive disorders, anxiety, and depression.Scientists are studying ways to use things like good bacteria and changes in how we eat to help fix these problems and make us feel better. However, one of the most promising avenues is through breath control. The autonomic nervous system has a direct impact on both the digestive system and the brain. In this episode my guest Mim Beim, Naturopath and Buteyko Breathing practitioner who works with the Breath-Brain Connection to help people use breath to align their digestive system and calm their autonomic nervous system. For better gut health, calmer mind, reduced anxiety and depression, learn to control your gut-brain axis through breathing. For more information visit: https://mimbeim.com/

Listen as Dr. Bennett talks about all the reasons why it is crucial that we breathe through our noses. Unlike our mouths, our nose is always open and there aren’t many obstacles getting in the way of the air. Besides that, our nose is anatomically designed to filter, humidify, and warm the air as it goes into our bodies. Could shutting our mouths and breathing through our noses really translate into better overall health? Find out the science behind this common-sense practice on today’s episode.    Book by James Nestor called Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art https://www.amazon.com/Breath-New-Science-Lost-Art/dp/0735213615   Patrick McKeown and Buteyko Breathing: https://buteykoclinic.com/the-hazards-of-heavy-breathing/ Xlear Nasal Spray: https://xlear.com/xlear/blog/blog/benefits-using-xylitol-nasal-spray/

On today's episode, we discuss the Buteyko Method and how to optimize your sleep, overcome asthma, and support healthy breathing through nasal breathing and other breathwork techniques. Steven Todd, D.M.D. is one of the foremost authorities on treating snoring and sleep apnea. Upon retiring from oral rehabilitation and dental anesthesiology, Dr. Todd turned his focus to Dental Sleep Medicine (DSM) treating both adult and pediatric patients.. He realized CPAP therapy and Oral Appliance Therapy just treated the SYMPTOMS of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) – they did not treat the CAUSE of OSA. Then he discovered the Buteyko Breathing Method and knew this was the missing piece of the puzzle to treat patients with Sleep Apnea and Sleep Disordered Breathing. Dr. Todd, with the Buteyko Breathing Method, could now treat the CAUSE of OSA not just the SYMPTOMS. The results his patients have experienced with Buteyko Breathing have changed their lives! He is the only Certified Buteyko Breathing Method instructor in the Gulf Coast of Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi. In this show you'll learn: 1. Why it is harmful to breathe through your mouth 2. One thing you can do at night to stop the cycle of overbreathing (it's cheap and easy) 3. How you can "test" yourself to see if you are overbreathing I have thought for many years that deep breathing through the belly was THE way to breathe.  Come to find out, the science doesn't support this advice.  Now, granted, breathing into your lower belly is much better than in your chest, Dr. Buteyko discovered that people breathe too often, taking in a larger volume of air than they actually need. What happens when we do that? Glad you asked :).  When we breathe frequently and take in a large volume of air repetitively as most people do, whether they breathe into their chest (not so good) or their bellies (good), our carbon dioxide levels drop too low.  When that happens, the oxygen we carry around in our hemoglobin doesn't detach from the molecule to feed our cells! It's called the Bohr effect in science (yup, only vaguely remember that from high school chemistry, do you?). Since reading Patrick's book, Close Your Mouth https://amzn.to/2HZZRbO, I've told several huffing and puffing athletes to try closing their mouth as they exercise.  Miraculously, they all said it made a big difference!  In fact, one gal I was playing martial arts with (who was half my age) was huffing and puffing while we were playing and I noticed her mouth open the whole time.  I, on the other hand, was breathing calmly through my nose.  I suggested to her that she should try closing her mouth the next round and she did.  She said it made a huge difference!

062: Buteyko Breathing with Steve Donald   When Shannon heard about Buteyko breathing she became curious and reached out to Steve Donald, one of the first Buteyko teachers in Canada. Steve had struggled with asthma throughout his life,  and it worsened as he grew older. He tried raw diets and supplements and some improvement was made but not sustained. In looking for an answer an internet search led him to learn about The Buteyko Method.   Impressed with the extent Buteyko helped him with his chronic condition Steve trained to teach Buteyko in 2006. He is the founding member of the Buteyko Breathing Educators Association ( BBEA) 2010 and was elected as BBEA president and board chair in 2016. Steve has been asked to speak to various groups, including yoga teachers and is preparing to hold teacher trainings in the Buteyko Method in the near future.   Buteyko is based on the concept that we breathe an excessive amount of air and it negatively impacts the function of our bodily systems. It is known as an asthma, sleep apnea and anxiety treatment; however, it is effective in treating a wide range of chronic health issues, as well as being good for general health and wellbeing.   Shannon and Steve discuss breath and the Buteyko method including what happens on a physiological level when we take a deep breath, how much air we should optimally be taking in per minute, and why Steve highly recommends nose breathing (even when engaging in physically demanding activities such as running). Shannon also asks Steve how the Buteyko Method can co-exist with yoga. 11:50 What led Steve to discover the Buteyko method   14:00 How much time does it take to incorporate the breathing exercises into your life   15:35 The theory behind Buteyko   17:00 Steve's process to incorporate Buteyko into his life despite his skepticism   19:40 Other alternative health attempts made by Steve to relieve his asthma symptoms   20:55 How to incorporate Buteyko breathing into your life and how much work is needed in order to maintain the benefits   22:20 Steve's experience as one of the first Buteyko teachers in Canada   23:20 Difference between yogic and Buteyko breathing and the possibility of incorporating Buteyko breathing with yoga   26:05 The culture of “take a deep breath” and what happens on a physiological level when you take in too much breath   30:00 How understanding respiratory physiology informs the understanding of blood pH and the effectiveness of Buteyko   33:50 How much a healthy adult should be breathing and how much those with chronic conditions breathe (liters per minute)   35:50 What Steve wants to share with yoga teachers   38:05 Why Steve believes large volume breathing isn't beneficial and the effect it has on those with asthma and anxiety   40:10 Nose breathing versus mouth breathing   44:40 A great yoga cue for breathing through the nose   45:35 What distinguishes Buteyko breathing from regular breathing   47:35 How to work with Steve and upcoming Buteyko trainings   51:45 Shannon's closing thoughts on breath Links   Steve's Website: Buteyko Toronto   Buteyko Toronto on Facebook   Buteyko Breathing Educators Association   Further Reading: Buteyko and Breathing   PDF: The Health Benefits of Nose Breathing by Dr. Alan Ruth   Article: 28 Reasons to Nose Breathe by Lisa Bowen   Gratitude to our Sponsor Schedulicity

How can Buteyko breathing help with asthma? Research shows 6-30% of asthma sufferers use breathing methods to alleviate their asthma symptoms in the UK.  Catherine and I discuss a paper from the Complementary Therapies in Medicine journal about Buteyko breathing and asthma. Buteyko breathing technique (BBT) is a method that is used in some practices to help with hyperventilation, and asthma. BBT trains people to slow their breath rate, eliminate mouth breathing (using a small strip of tape on the mouth), and use controlled breath pauses to increase CO2 levels. Russian physiologist, Konstantin Buteyko, created it in the 1950’s after experimenting with a slower breathing rate on himself and his patients. He postulated that hyperventilation and mouth breathing create hypocapnia (low CO2), which causes hundreds of ailments, including bronchospasm.

Taping your mouth at night improves the microbiome of the mouth and gut, increases energy, improves sleep, snoring, and allergies, and calms anxiety. I've been mouth taping at night for 15 years! This Primal Diet - Modern Health podcast gives details on how and why to tape and other ideas to reduce snoring and allergies. The info is here in this blog post as well.  Key Concept: The mouth is for eating. The nose is for breathing. Taping your mouth at night is the natural and correct way your body wants to breathe When we snore or breathe through the mouth we deplete carbon dioxide - an essential blood gas that needs to be in balance with oxygen. Slowing the breath and breathing through the nose help increase carbon dioxide and can improve whole body chemistry. Topics I cover on this Podcast: Why you get deeper sleep and less snoring How taping your mouth can improve asthma and allergies Improving dental health and breath Achieving a calmer mind  The benefits of Nitric Oxide and Carbon Dioxide How to tape Links to things I mention: Treat your allergies with Quercitin or D-Hist, and homeopathic Histaminum. Handle the allergens in your environment too, such as the cat that sleeps on your pillow. More on allergies here.  If you have a chronic sinus infection Nutribiotic Nasal Spray may help. Here’s a podcast I did with the world’s top trainer of Buteyko Breathing. It’s really helpful to learn more about how breathing affects your life! Especially if you snore or have asthma...  3M Micropore tape on Amazon

Sasha also opened the first health food store in the country, along with a holistic seminar center. Today, she is the Executive Director of the Breathing Center based in the United States. ------------------------------------- Listen and Learn: Why over-breathing can cause a myriad of health problems   Why CO2 might actually be your friend How C02 works as a bronchial and vascular dilator Why reduced breath is actually the goal for most people to find balance Nutritional Tip of the Week: Teas - why you should go back to basics Links & References from the Show: Breathing Center Got questions?
