Trump is back…but should stakeholders operating within the intersecting CPG categories of functional foods, functional beverages, and nutritional supplements be cheerful about his return to the oval office? This will certainly not sound like a “hot take” or anything, but the second Trump presidential term will undoubtedly offer a mixture of risk and reward…ushering in a new era of market volatility. As press secretary Karoline Leavitt recently pointed out, "there has never been a president who communicates with the American people as openly and authentically as Donald Trump.” But while I personally enjoy that operating model…it does create an economic environment that I recently described to an industry colleague as “best suited for master sailors.” And that's because the art of both the sailor (and businessperson) is to leave nothing to chance…but sailors are artists whose medium is the wind and today's businesspeople must be artists whose medium is correctly spotting Donald Trump's subtle hints that reveal upcoming events. Furthermore, I believe a key to potentially benefitting from the Trump 2.0 “driver of demand” requires understanding how to position against a few of his known (but converging) “the art of the deal” tendencies. And these would be (1) a little hyperbole never hurts, (2) confirm an impression they were already predisposed to believe, (3) never get too attached to one deal or one approach, and (4) sometimes your best decisions are the ones you don't make. Finally, it's extremely important to consider rate of speed and level of efficiency surrounding Trump 2.0 changes. Since this is a “been here, done that” kind of thing, Trump won't fumble through the initial phase of his term he will have a better understanding around bottlenecks and getting around chokepoints…including how to flex unilateral powers. Also, given that the House and Senate are Republican majorities (at least for the next two years), that political trifecta usually creates efficiency and makes for stickier policy changes. But the inspiration behind my latest first principles thinking content piece (or I guess content miniseries) was a Trump 2.0 section titled “rhetoric foreshadowing action is greater than embellished negotiation tactics” that I included into many of functional CPG brand and supply side client presentations during the last quarter of 2024. And while each of those client presentations were packed with diverse personalized insights…I'm confident this “Trump 2.0” content miniseries, filled with a refined (and expanded) version of my generalized “base case” strategies, will be extremely valuable to my regular audience. And I figured part three of this Trump 2.0 content miniseries should be “financial" because he loves to use (especially the stock market) as measurement for his success and economic scoreboard overall. And I'd group the expected Trump 2.0 policy decisions to restore (and promote) American competitiveness into three buckets; cutting burdensome regulations, retaliatory tariffs, and providing financial incentives. But since I deeply covered the first two policy decision buckets within the previous Trump 2.0 content miniseries parts…I will focus on financial incentives like "America First" business tax cuts, but also interest rate dynamics, private financial markets (investing/fundraising), U.S. dollar index, stock market performance, and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Let's be real, most supplements are just expensive hype. The fitness industry is a billion-dollar machine built on flashy marketing, half-truths, and straight-up BS claims. They're just overpriced laxatives. Instead of throwing your money at gimmicks, I'll tell you exactly where to invest for real results. We'll talk about why protein powder and creatine are the only two supplements that actually move the needle when it comes to muscle growth, recovery, and performance. So, just to set the stage…you can expect this “Trump 2.0” content miniseries to initially include four loosely titled parts; regulatory, global trade, financial, and commerce. And I figured part two of this Trump 2.0 content miniseries should be “global trade" because he made imposing tariffs central to his economic program. Moreover, with most functional CPG inputs (whether various ingredients or raw materials) coming from countries of origin outside the United States (and China having near monopolies currently on many portions of those inputs), these tariffs can materially affect two key elements (pricing and overall supply stability). And that means industry stakeholders don't share the same overwhelming level of optimism (and excitement) they've expressed surrounding Trump's health agency selections.

Send us a textDr. Andrea Love of Immunologic is back for Part 2. This week we're talking politics. The political spectrum isn't as divided as it looks—turns out both sides can latch onto the same sketchy ideas, just for wildly different reasons. Dr. Love takes us back to the first anti-vax wave in the 1970s:Liberals were all about “no toxins, no chemicals, keep it natural!"Conservatives, on the other hand, didn't trust the government and didn't want to be told what to do.Fast forward, and here we are with the booming (and unregulated) supplement industry—a 50+ year effort to make people doubt the government, science, and even basic safety standards. You may also recognize another political mantra... MAHA, RFK Jr.'s “Make America Healthy Again” platform, exploiting the country's health challenges to fuel outrage at Big Food, Big Pharma, and, honestly, probably Big Spoon at this point.Lastly, you've got questions... We've got answers. Or maybe more questions? Dr. Love rapid-fire on today's hottest topics:Probiotics? Mostly hype, barely proven for much.Food sensitivity tests? Food sensitivity is not a medical condition—case closed.Ultra-processed food? The term means nothing—processing isn't inherently bad.Seed oils? They're fine. Seriously. Good fats, even.Masks? Use them when it makes sense for you and your loved ones.Carnivore diets? Overhyped. For real health improvements, talk to a dietitian.Metabolic reset? No magic switch here—just consistent, unsexy healthy habits.Family gatherings, social media, and uncomfy conversations—how do we fight misinformation? Stop resharing garbage—screenshot it if you need receipts. Share credible sources, and speak up when you see harmful nonsense (safely, of course). We've all got a part to play. Follow along with Dr. Love and the other science resources she recommends in today's episode. What's Inside:Let's get political, political (does either side get it right?)MAHA—does one of those A's stand for angry? To navigate their guidance, rely on 2-3 solid, reputable (and relevant) resources—trusting just one source is like building a table with only one leg: it won't hold up.Research doesn't happen overnight. It's a marathon, not a TikTok trend. And as demographics represented become more overall present, it takes time for that to reflect. With the wave of attention to menopause in the media, women are the primary target of the wild west of unregulated supplements. Dr. Love warns about “Hormone hacks”. These claims are red flags built for sales, not science.Providers are in the trenches; how can they help patients survive this predatory landscape?By walking people through data (not fear) and translating science into—as Dr. Love bluntly puts it—something a 4th grader can understand. Some experts overuse jargon or discredit others. Vital Proteins was hardly the first supplement brand to utilize collagen peptides, but it has become a category creator that disrupted the entire protein space. And while most will focus on the brand's leading share in the collagen market across every U.S. sales channel, I want to talk sustainability at Vital Proteins. For those unaware, collagen peptides are an upcycled byproduct of the meat industry…but Vital Proteins has additional responsible sourcing standards and traceability guidelines. Additionally, Vital Proteins removed 25 million plastic scoops from circulation and aims to be 100% scoopless by the end of this year. And then recently, it was announced that a blue paperboard tub…that uses 90% less plastic than the brand's traditional tub, will be used for its top-selling Unflavored Collagen product available at Sam's Club stores nationwide. The “sports nutrition” niche of the supplement industry is a graveyard of once-buzzy brands that abruptly stopped growing…at least in part because they never had a solid strategic plan to turn anyone into a customer who wasn't already relatively fit. In July 2022, I explored a related topic, showing through a collection of different statistics that spanned race signups, connected fitness average workout by subscriber data, wearables activity levels, and even national/state park visitation numbers…that there was widespread growth across endurance activity type, interest, and competitive level. Additionally, I presented several other "Great Shutdown" accelerated “drivers of demand” that showed how drastically different the fitness landscape became, thus providing the needed shifts in consumer behavior that could fuel new commercial opportunities within the supplement industry. But while change absolutely happened from 2020 to 2022...these last two years have been an equally chaotic period for the fitness landscape. So, I'll re-examine a few previously utilized statistical trends for their stickiness level and then also explore a few new data stories (like the rise of run clubs, longevity and healthspan trend, fit lifestyle sports nutrition shift) that encompass today's fitness vibes. But does this compelling data storytelling around potential long-term consumer behavior change justify a strategic action by brand owners within the “sports nutrition” niche of the supplement industry? Because oftentimes the best approach is to let others better serve that market. That being said, I'll re-examine two sports nutrition brands (Science in Sport and Bare Performance Nutrition (BPN)) that are authentically serving the endurance activity market. Plus, I'll add a new dynamic to this discussion with Raw Nutrition recently launching a subline of sports nutrition products called Raw Endurance. Additionally, I'll tackle key strategic elements like product strategy because it's important to meet the endurance activity consumer where they are right now (and consider future adjacencies). Finally, I remind supplement brand owners that the biggest “blue ocean” opportunity is through incrementality. That's why I talked about the foundational human movements of walking, hiking, biking, and running…as it provides you with a chance to turning a “beginner” into a customer. And what I mean by a “beginner” isn't the typical fitness industry definition of someone relatively young (and capable) who wants to become more conventionally attractive, get swole, or learn a trendy workout. I'm talking about most adult Americans who don't currently hit the CDC's recommended minimums for regular exercise. More than ever, humans are beginning to realize that movement is an essential component in quality of life…but what the supplement industry doesn't understand is that being distracted by the same old way or even disbelief that there's a simpler opportunity is leaving significant underserved audiences of true beginners (with enormous demand). He holds a degree in chemistry from California State University Long Beach and has authored numerous journal articles on phytochemistry and analytical techniques for the natural products and nutraceutical industry. He is on the executive committee of the AHPA, as well as AHPA's Education and Research on Botanicals Foundation, and past chair of the Hemp and Medical Marijuana committee. He received the 2019 NutraIngredients-USA NutraChampion award for advocacy of best testing practices.   Together Élan and I explore the supplement industry, from the quality of supplements to the process of testing ingredients. Élan challenges the claim that the supplement industry is untested, unsafe and unregulated, and instead offers insights into what actually happens at each stage of testing and what it really means when raw materials are rejected. He gives an overview of the technology behind DNA testing for specific products, the role of HPTLC testing, commonly adulterated ingredients and the importance of challenging the healthcare and health science industries. GLP-1 weight loss pharmaceuticals will cause equally pervasive second-order effects to functional CPG categories as AI will trigger regarding business productivity. Despite our collective ambiguity on the true extent, I believe the skyrocketing popularity of weight loss pharmaceuticals has already tangibly disrupted many aspects of the CPG industry. The problem (i.e. obesity epidemic) has reached unprecedented levels...as the most recent CDC statistics show more than 100 million people are considered obese by the U.S. government…and also candidates for weight loss pharmaceuticals. There are the obvious health-related motivating factors like managing diabetes or cardiovascular disease…but also something deeper at play involving social ideals, which has kept Americans extremely interested in weight management. Another core reason why weight management is such a mass appeal dietary outcome is that American modern life constantly messes with our ability to achieve even a fraction of the standard we set. So, it shouldn't be surprising to learn that the United States is by far the world's largest weight loss pharmaceuticals market, currently accounting for an estimated two-thirds of total dollars spent globally. Since its 2017 approval as a diabetes treatment, semaglutide (Ozempic and Wegovy) has become one of the most popular prescription drugs in the United States. But while their intended purpose was to moderate insulin levels in Type 2 diabetics, new users are overwhelmingly adopting these drugs for its notable weight loss side effects. These unmet medical needs are more than enough to build demand…but countless popular celebrities (like Oprah Winfrey), positively sharing their experience, has further fueled its meteoric rise. In fact, marketplace experts now estimate annual weight loss drug sales reaching $150 billion by 2033. But let's talk about results…because within weight management categorical spending, consumers want outcomes. Users of Ozempic and similar drugs, that followed a diet and exercise program, had an average weight loss of 15 to 20 percent and significant reductions in cardiovascular risk factors. So, I've laid out the massive problem and a very probable solution, but what about predicted outcomes (and second-order effects)? Does the “Age of Ozempic” indeed continue reshaping the CPG industry or will it quickly turn into overhyped garbage after post-market surveillance showed too many public health safety questions? Regardless, I believe it's easiest to think about “the Age of Ozempic” as being a major catalyst that fundamentally shifts consumer behavior. And although the weight loss achieved through these pharmaceuticals has been remarkable, concerns about the long-term sustainability of these results persist. Additionally, for many users…GLP-1 drugs are not a long-term commitment but rather a step along the way in their weight management journey. But that naturally sets up three adjacent opportunities for functional CPG companies to market their products as part of the onramp, during, and offramp portions of a continued healthy lifestyle change. Finally, I'll focus on the potential impacts within the intersecting categories of functional foods, functional beverages, and nutritional supplements. This includes how these functional CPG categories can bridge nutritional gaps (i.e. protein powder) and help combat against the side effects of weight-loss drugs (i.e. muscle loss and HMB). One of the joys of the modern era is that, thanks to the internet, people we admire from afar are tantalizingly within reach. I've been on both sides of the equation. My community often reaches out about wanting to connect, and I've done my share of approaching people I admire. In my case of meeting Doug Miller, who is the founder (or co-owner) of supplement brands (e.g. Core Nutritionals, 'Merica Labz, Arms Race Nutrition, Unmatched, and Myoblox) and the specialty supplement retail chain The Nutrition Corners, I got lucky having a mutual friend introduce us at a beverage category conference several years ago. But in this wide-ranging conversation, it felt like I was peeling away layer after layer of the onion...not to reveal something hidden, but to discover more authenticity. Doug and I talk through the inspiration behind starting a supplement brand side hustle two decades ago, and how that decision turned into an expansive business portfolio that includes specialty retail locations, gyms, and more supplement brands. We also discussed what it truly takes to be successful when leading multiple businesses, being a family man, and making an impact in his community. Moreover, how the maturation of the supplement industry has required everyone to upskill if they want to truly break through. Additionally, why a messy period in American history helped derail his first attempt at scaling an energy drink brand. Amazon is "King of the Supplement Industry" | Top-Selling Supplement Brands & Subcategory Sales Data

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 1, 2024 14:36

With great power comes great responsibility, right? But does the “Peter Parker principle” still apply when you are the undisputed king of the entire vitamins, minerals, and supplements (VMS) market? Even before the “Great Shutdown” period, “household, health, and baby care” was the largest consumable category on the Amazon marketplace…of which “vitamins, supplements, and sports nutrition” was the biggest subcategory. But the 2020s has seen Amazon's power within the supplement industry become even more impactful…as the rate at which the retail giant is gobbling market share is unprecedented and seems almost limitless at this point. And much of its success can be attributed to the famous “Amazon Flywheel.” Customers love the almost endless selection, lower pricing, and overall customer experience on Amazon. Brands enjoy the lower barriers-to-entry on Amazon…knowing they can reach people immediately, generally at a lower cost structure. This allows more opportunity for innovation from those supplement brands, thus making Amazon an incubator of product attributes and trends. Right now, it's estimated that four out of every five online transactions for supplements happen on Amazon. Moreover, ecommerce accounts for over 25 percent of total supplements market sales. According to recent SPINS 52-week data for the period ending May 19, 2024…Amazon sold $14.88 billion in VMS products, which was up an astounding 22.4% YoY. If you were wondering how that stacks up against the portion of supplement sales at other major retailers, Amazon's lead is significant…to the tune of more than double the second-largest VMS selling retailer. But as Amazon continues to grow, supplement brands face the stark reality of figuring out how to navigate an increasingly dynamic online marketplace environment. Amazon can no longer be a passive sales channel and supplement brands (small and large) should be using every tool the online marketplace offers to help drive sales performance. Currently within the VMS category on Amazon, the top 5 sellers are Garden of Life, Optimum Nutrition, Now Foods, Pure Encapsulations, and Nutricost. I'll also share some top growing Amazon supplements brands and breakdown performance in subcategories like Protein, Hydration, Pre-workout powders, Greens, and Creatine. But four months ago, in my last supplement industry content piece related to Amazon, you might remember that I left off by declaring that despite the increased run-ins with the FDA recently…I didn't believe the leading online marketplace wouldn't indulge in the “poison pill scenario” that was defined by me as totally abandoning the supplement categories. Instead, Amazon would figure out how to increase its compliance hurdles to appease governmental agencies and supplement industry stakeholders. So, in an sort of industry disrupting move, Amazon increased its compliance hurdles to appease these various parties…starting initially with hot button FDA supplement subcategories like sexual enhancement, weight management, and sports nutrition. Amazon's new policy mandates that the company selling supplements in those beforementioned subcategories must receive third-party testing documentation directly from either Eurofins, UL Solutions, or NSF International…which are currently the only testing, inspection, and certification firms qualified by Amazon. Additionally, the testing requirements have expanded a bit past the original GMP compliance and label claim verification.
