In Episode 8 of the Fitness Pollenator Podcast, I welcome Dr. Chris Leib. I met Chris about a year ago at a workshop he did at our mutual friend Tom DeVietro’s gym. (As an aside, Tom happened to be the very first guest of this podcast, so if you haven’t listened to episode 1, you should!)Not only is Chris a doctor of physical therapy, but he’s also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. While at Chris’s workshop, I was completely blown away by his hybrid approach to training, in which he fuses physical therapy, CrossFit, kettlebells, and more.As I’ve gotten to know Chris, one of my favorite things about him is his voracious appetite for learning and assimilating new information. Lately, he can be found splitting his time between the physical therapy clinic, the personal training setting, and writing about exercise. In this episode, Chris and I talk about...What drew him to CrossFit originally, and why he keeps coming backHow he integrates diverse mobility approaches like FMS and Mobility WODScientific vs. anecdotal evidencePT and S&C scopes of practiceThe Power-Strength-Endurance (PSE) MethodContinuing educationHis upcoming Movement Education SeriesAnd so much more!Watch the episode right here:Subscribe to the podcast on iTunes, or listen to this episode through the following link: https://googledrive.com/host/0BweoQIuhXZAqOTJrS2g5M25oZjg/ep8chrisleib.mp3For more on Chris, visit the following links:WebsiteFacebookYouTube

By day, Jason Helmes is just a regular guy. He teaches math to middle schoolers; he has a wife and two kids. He is exceptionally tall (6 feet, 8 inches), but we won't hold that against him.By night, he's the boss at Anyman Fitness, an online community for people "who want to learn to lean out, live well, and improve themselves permanently."To date Jason has helped thousands of people reach their goals, and it's no wonder, given his teaching background and incredible ability to simplify fitness and nutrition. He's also a really nice guy, which probably helps.I was fortunate enough to get Jason on for Episode 7 of the Fitness Pollenator (Video) Podcast. Over the course of the episode, Jason Helmes and I discussHow he went from jock to jiggly to jacked againThe availability bias and the difference between popular and evidence-based fitness Making fitness a lifestyle and how anyone can do itThe importance of meal planningHow being both a teacher and mathematically-minded helps Jason as a coachHis eight month diet in preparation for a summer photo shootWhether or not "bulking" and "cutting" cycles are necessaryWhy being bodybuilder lean is neither healthy nor sustainableThe advantages and disadvantages of being an exceptionally tall lifterAvoiding "lifestyle bloat"Jason's secret for building a successful (online) businessAnd moreThis is one you absolutely do not want to miss!Watch the episode on YouTube or right here:You can also listen to the audio HERE.For more on Jason and Anyman Fitness, download his e-book (Livin' The Dream) off his website, www.anymanfitness.com. We are back with a vehicle! And not a starship or walker or anything like that. It's the Speeder Bike! Only one of the coolest vehicles in the galaxy. We look at WHY the speeder bike is so cool and discuss the TWO Return of the Jedi scenes as well as the Revenge of the Sith scene (who knew there was one?). We also discuss the best swing set of all time, the Scout Walker Command Tower by Gym Dandy with bonus Speeder Bike swing. This one's a long one, but a good one.Download Episode 36 - Speeder BikeSpeeder bikes, also known as hover bikes, were open-air repulsorlift vehicles, usually carrying one or two passengers. Speeder bikes emphasized speed and maneuverability over conventional speeders and were popular with thrill-seeking teenagers and military scouts. A typical speeder bike had a maximum altitude of 10 meters (32 feet) and could thus maneuver deftly over very rough terrain. Some companies manufactured extras like sidecars for speeder bikes.

Cheers everybody! Today's episode is Major Bren Derlin, or as you may know him, the jerk that had to lock Luke and Han out of the Hoth base when he closed the doors for the night. But he was concerned about Princess Leia and the rest of the rebels safety, so he can't be that much of a jerk. The most interesting thing about Bren Derlin is the actor who played him. John Ratzenberger, who is famously known as the know-it-all mailman Cliff Clavin from Cheers, disguised his face (sweet mustache) and voice for this role. It was a little before Cheers, but you would never know it was him.Download Episode 28 - Bren DerlinBren Derlin was a male Human officer of the Rebel Alliance. Bearing the rank of Major, Derlin served as the operations and security chief at Echo Base, the Alliance headquarters on the planet Hoth, under the command of General Carlist Rieekan. In that post, Derlin had to order the closing of the base door to avoid putting the whole base in risk. By doing so, however, he risked the lives of Luke Skywalker and Han Solo, two valuable Rebels. Soon after that event, Derlin served during the Battle of Hoth. During the Battle of Endor, Derlin served as Unit leader.

Jimmy Herring circa 1994In the spring of 1994 the Grateful Dead were still touring, I got married and began my graduate studies at DePaul University. Working full-time in the printing and publications department of my alma mater and going to school full time left me with little time for live music or much of a social life. But in the summer of 1994, all I had to do was work full time... and take some of my precious earned vacation time to see some music. After 25 years of actively seeking out live musical experiences, the summer of 1994 stands out as a highlight. In particular, the ten day period of July 14 - 24, 1994 stands out as one of the most ambitious musical experiences of my life.Thursday 7/14/94 - work 9 - 5, Widespread Panic, The Vic (Aquarium Rescue Unit opened)Friday 7/15/94 - work 9 - 5Saturday 7/16/94 drive 5.5 hours to Ames, IA - Widespread Panic, People's Bar and GrillSunday 7/17/94 - drive back to ChicagoMonday 7/18/94 - work 9 - 5, 3 hour drive to the Riverbend Campground outside of Noblesville, IN.Tuesday 7/19/94 - Grateful Dead, Deer Creek AmpitheatreWednesday 7/20/94 - Grateful Dead, Deer Creek AmpitheatreThursday 7/21/94 - Grateful Dead, Deer Creek AmpitheatreFriday 7/22/94 - drive back to Chicago, celebrate birthday at Martyrs'Saturday 7/23/94 - Grateful Dead, Soldier Field, ChicagoSunday 7/24/94 - Grateful Dead, Soldier Field, Chicago5 Dead shows, 2 Panic shows and 3 full days of work in 11 days. But you are here to hear about Widespread Panic. That July 14th show at the Vic was originally scheduled for a larger venue, the newly opened Skyline Stage on Navy pier. But Peter Frampton used his own PA a couple of weeks earlier which led to the venue not allowing Widespread to use their PA.... I'll add that this change in venue happened after the band and crew had arrived in the early morning of July 14 to set the stage.Several dozen people were turned away at the door of the Vic because of overcrowding and the air conditioning failed before the band even hit the stage. The Aquarium Rescue Unit (without Col. Bruce but with Kofi Burbridge on keys and flute and Paul Henson on vocals) opened for Panic. I wonder if Jimmy Herring ever had a sense of deja vu when sharing the stage with Widespread Panic? Or perhaps being in the Aquarium Rescue Unit was like LIVING in deja vu!I featured the final two songs and the encore of Panic's one set show back in PaniCast #4....PaniCast #4 - Sweating to July 14, 1994 The Vic Theatre, Chicago. This week I bring you the opening of the first set up through the drum break in Papa's Home.I've also added a couple of great radio studio performances from 1993 and some silly interviews...July 14, 1994The Vic TheatreChicago, IL(set one opener)Heroes >Weight of the World,PilgrimsPorch SongMay 3, 1993KTCZ 97.1 StudiosMinneapolis, MNInterviewWonderingJuly 14, 1994 continuesLittle Kin,It Ain't No Use >Travelin' LightMay 10, 1993WDET 101.9 FMDetroit, MIInterviewHenry Parsons DiedJuly 14, 1994 continuesJunior,Stop-Go >Papa's HomeJuly 14, 1994 Aquarium Rescue Unit (opening for Widespread Panic)Vic TheatreChicago, ILFixin' to Die(calling out to 'Garrie' during the song... same Garrie?)Jimmy Herring on guitarOteil Burbridge on bass/vocalsApartment Q258 on drumsKofi Burbridge on keys/flutePaul Henson on vocalsLISTENER'S GUIDE:7/14/94Listen how Weight of the World starts with Dave melodically driving the song forward until Mikey takes control and leads into the third verse. This allows DAS to switch to a percussive slap bass technique, nearly teasing 'We Want the Funk....' at one point. The Pilgrims intro is so mellow, almost like they backing into the song. Feeling confident and conversational in the way they are playing.... - and so we listen, and if it's real good, and we shake. And then Houser takes a solo and the heat is on!Check out the jam that begins about 5 and a half minutes into Ain't No Use.... soaring, triumphant, lovely. And again around the 5 and a half minute mark in Papa's Home a graceful and confident jam. Houser's leads are reminiscent of a yet-to-be-written Surprise Valley.5/3/93 and 5/10/93Being asked by radio DJs about being from Athens and REM must've gotten old and you can't blame JB Jack the Jester for trying to have a little fun with them in the process. I just love JB talking about Sunny in the 5/10 interview; 'Sometimes he rubs them. Sometimes he shakes them.'7/14/94 ARUThe band calls out for "Gary" during Fixin' to Die.... leaving me wondering if they were somehow calling out to Garrie Vereen....SOURCE INFO:7/14/94Source: SBD > DAT @ 48.0khz > Analog(master)Transfer: Analog(master) > Tascam DA-45HR @ 44.1khz > Audiophile 24/96 USB > Cool Edit 2000 > CDwave > FLAC(level 6)Converted and edited by D.P. I posted Doug Webb's substitutions a while back, but never got around to editing the audio from the clinic. I figured that I should just post the raw audio tracks, or I'd never get around to editing the tracks. There is a lot of great information here, but it is kind of long.
