Humans are one species on a planet of millions of species. The literary collection Creature Needs is a project that grew out of a need to do something with grievous, anxious energy—an attempt to nourish the soul in a meaningful way, and an attempt to start somewhere specific in the face of big, earthly challenges and changes, to create a polyvocal call to arms about animal extinction and habitat loss and the ways our needs are interconnected. Strap in for another exciting season of Playing With Marbles, brought to you by Brain Canada. In past seasons, we learned about all of the cool brain science research coming out of labs in Canada, from mini-brain organoids in petri dishes to women's health beyond the bikini. We've taken a look at the brain at a microscopic level and learned how each part of your marble functions to help you encode, process, and remember the world around you. This season, we're going a step further to understand all parts of the brain, and this one's a little more difficult to see with a microscope. Now that we know the brain's inner workings, we want to understand how those inner workings might affect how someone thinks, feels, and behaves. In simpler terms, we're going to explore the intricacies of mental health, and mental illness.Just as we focused on women's brain health last season, we want to make sure we're zeroing in on those who have been forgotten or who need the most support. As heard in this episode, mental illness is the leading cause of disability for people in Canada between the ages of 15 and 29 - that's why we're centering this season on youth mental health! There's tons of information out there for young people about mental health, but much of it falls into the category of pop science at best, and misinformation at worst. To combat the junk science out there, we're talking to real scientists about what goes on in the brain when someone is experiencing mental illness. To make sure we're getting all sides of this complicated topic, we're doing something we've never done before on Playing With Marbles. This season, we talk to real young people who struggle with their mental health. Our guests range in age, gender, and diagnosis. You'll get to hear what it's like living with obsessive-compulsive disorder, the day-to-day struggles of ADHD, and what it's like to seek treatment for an eating disorder. We hope pairing the real, lived experiences with the science behind these disorders will provide a nuanced look at the long-maligned topic of mental health and mental illness. This episode serves as a primer for all to come on this season of Playing With Marbles. Hop on in and listen to what's in store.Fast FactsGlobally, one in seven 10- to 19-year-olds experiences a mental health disorder.By the time people in Canada reach 40 years of age, 1 in 2 have, or will have had, mental illness. Importantly, young people aged 15 to 24 are more likely to experience mental illness than any other age group.Up to 70 percent of mental health challenges begin during childhood or teenage years. The COVID-19 pandemic greatly affected the mental health of young people in Canada. Only 42 percent of youth in Canada aged 15 to 24 years old reported having excellent or very good mental health in late March and early April of 2020, compared to 62 percent in 2018—the largest drop of any age group.Less than 20 percent of youth struggling with their mental health receive appropriate treatment.Learn More about This Episode's Cool ResearchThe focus of this season of Playing With Marbles is all about youth mental health. As heard in this episode, one in every four young people are in need of mental health services every year. That's why Brain Canada has partnered with RBC Future Launch and Power Corporation to support the Canadian Youth Mental Health Insight Platform, led by Dr. Sean Hill from the Centre for Addition and Mental Health (CAMH). The platform seeks to provide a state-of-the-art informatics platform that can serve as a foundation to optimize mental health for youth across Canada. They discuss the meaning of fairness in mental health and the concepts used to support. Dr. Laura Sikstrom is also an assistant professor (status-only) in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Toronto. Dr. Sikstrom also co-leads the Predictive Care Team at CAMH, which focuses on the intricate intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and mental health care. By integrating computational techniques with ethnographic insights, this team investigates the potential and challenges of incorporating AI into mental health practice, with a focus on compassionate and equitable care. Dr. Sikstrom received funding from AMS Healthcare, Google, SSHRC and CIHR and is also a nominee for the prestigious Governor General's Gold Award.  Dr. Sean Hill is also a computational neuroscientist with experience in building large-scale computational models of brain circuitry. The Centre collaborates with clinicians and researchers, employing neuroinformatics, artificial intelligence, and multi-scale modeling, to develop data-driven definitions of brain disorders, predict patient trajectories, and transform mental health care. Dr. Hill applies large-scale data integration, neuroinformatics, multiscale brain modeling and machine learning to improve our understanding and treatment of mental health disorders. The Centre's mandate is to accelerate global collaborations in brain science using the power of big data and brain modeling to fundamentally change how mental illness is understood. Poet Sean Hill performs three poems that encapsulate his dynamic relationship to birds, travel and life as a Black wanderer in the great outdoors. First is The Western Tanager or Why Montana, a villanelle reflecting on why people choose a home. Then, In Houston examines the intimacy of quiet moments and the surprising sounds that can be heard when we really listen. And finally, Silas Fishing 1967 shows how connecting with even small moments in nature can have a transformational effect.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. Want more BirdNote? This month, Mary talks with poet Sean Hill. Sean is currently on faculty with University of Montana in Missoula. His path to that post began in Milledgeville, GA where he spent his childhood fascinated with the workings of nature. That homeland remains a big part of the stories Sean tells of his family and community from enslavement to today. Sean has lived in Minnesota, Texas, and Alaska, and has traveled the world. Echoes of those journeys mix in with Sean's particular brand of truth telling to render poems of justice, awe and honor. You can read Sean's poetry by visiting his website https://www.seanhillpoetry.com/. Welcome back to Life's a Wreck (it's been a minute). I've been working on this podcast for the past five months and finally get to share it with all of you. It's been an experimental podcast for me as I look forward to what the future may hold for Life's a Wreck and let me promise you it has been a ton of fun piecing together. The entirety of this episode is inspired by the future. The future of me, of this pod and of the mental health care system in Canada. I was inspired to create this episode while listening to an episode of Malcolm Gladwell's Revisionist History. The episode was on experiments and specifically what magical experiments experts in various fields would do to vastly advance their understanding of their work. I wondered "huh what would this look like for mental health" and the concept for this pod and its new sound was born. In this episode, you'll hear from:The Scientific Director of the Krembil Centre for Neuroinformatics (CAMH) Dr. Sean Hill, Canada's first EVER Federal Minister of Mental Health and Addiction The Honourable Dr. Carolyn Bennett, and the Executive Director of the Canadian Mental Health Association's Nova Scotia chapter Karn Nichols. Prominent voices in the mental health space, all coming together to discuss what the future of mental health looks like in Canada. Kick back and relax for a much-anticipated episode of Life's a Wreck.Special thanks to:Willem Paynter (Bass) - @willempaynter IGGabe Mink (Guitar) - @gabeminkfurcoat IGMartin Davidson (Sax)Maya StakaCredits for additional Music:Bobby Shew Quintet, The Loop Jazz Club, Jul 16, 2017 Bobby Shew – trumpet Eric Marienthal – saxophone Matt Harris – piano Tomáš Uhlík – double bass Dennis Mackrel – drums

Have you ever struggled when deciding what to wear? College football recruits often do. They have several hats in front of them, yet they never seem to know which one to put on! Sean thinks that's pretty dumb. We discuss some of the joys and pains of running around tracks and through neighborhoods. We also reminisce on some of our public speaking training. Clearly, it's paid off with this fabulous podcast. Plus, a look at some of the classic cars from driving school. And do you have a favorite Nickelodeon game show? Finally, a dumb tweet from LeBron James and a silly sports cliche that's truly out of this world.
