This webinar presents the work involved in developing a standardised comparative risk assessment method for assessing life safety risk of dangerous goods being routed through the tunnel or via an alternative surface route. The project was conceived to focus on new road tunnel projects, but the methodology developed could also be used for comparative assessment of alternative surface routes. Dangerous goods are a wide variety of substances and objects that pose acute risks to people, property, and the environment due to their chemical or physical characteristics. The transport by road of such goods is necessary to achieve broad societal benefits, yet such transport has inherent risk of significant events adversely affecting people (road users, adjacent populations, and responders) and the environment. The webinar describes the proposed methodology as well as providing a case study application of the methodology to aid practitioners. The session provides a summary of the legal context for undertaking such assessments and the responsibilities that lie with the various stakeholder parties. The authors also present the broader context in which the life safety assessment results should be considered and the other decision-making factors that should be applied. The webinar is presented by Dr Conrad Stacey and Nigel Casey.

Few people in shipping can claim to be a best-selling author but the book published in 1985 by Dominica's candidate, Dr Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry, The Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Sea, is a text that thousands in international maritime law will be familiar with. Doumbia-Henry concluded her eight-year term as president of Sweden's World Maritime University last month, the latest post in a trailblazing career that has included time in The Hague working with the Iran-US Claims Tribunal, and the International Labour Organisation in Switzerland where she was responsible for developing the ILO Maritime Labour Convention. She is one of three women nominated for the position of secretary general with the International Maritime Organisation, which includes seven candidates. They are: Bangladesh (Moin Uddin Ahmed), China (Zhang Xiajojie), Dominica (Dr Cleopatra Doumbia-Henry), Finland (Minna Kivimäki), Kenya (Nancy Karigithu), Panama (Arsenio Dominguez) and Türkiye (Suat Hayri Aka). Doumbia-Henry said she was inspired to embark on a maritime career and in particular develop labour standards for the shipping sector because she grew up on a small island, with many fishermen in her village and among her family. Her work protecting the rights of seafarers led her to many interagency collaborations between the ILO and the IMO. Voting to elect the next secretary general begins at 9.30am on Tuesday July 18. Research shows that none of the seven candidates appear to have sustained a majority to win the vote outright, which means a second round or a third round is likely.

This month, Mary talks with poet Sean Hill. Sean is currently on faculty with University of Montana in Missoula. His path to that post began in Milledgeville, GA where he spent his childhood fascinated with the workings of nature. That homeland remains a big part of the stories Sean tells of his family and community from enslavement to today. Sean has lived in Minnesota, Texas, and Alaska, and has traveled the world. Echoes of those journeys mix in with Sean's particular brand of truth telling to render poems of justice, awe and honor. You can read Sean's poetry by visiting his website https://www.seanhillpoetry.com/. Today we talk with Spooks from Saskatoon, Canada representing Dangerous Goods Crew and Alpha Kids. Spooks is in my opinion one of the most original and interesting dancers to watch in Canada. In today's episode we get into a bit about his history and how he got into dance, the Saskatchewan scene, connecting with the Dangerous Goods crew, traveling and getting outside your bubble, the mental game of breaking and its comparisons with Smash Bros and more. A real pleasure to talk with Spooks about this stuff and even though he's not a "famous" bboy I still think there's a lot of insight to take from this and I hope you enjoy the talk. Peace.

Some time ago, shipment of dangerous goods by air and the threat to air cargo from unidentified and unlabelled hazardous materials in shipments was described as “The Wild West of Dangerous Goods". Now Radharamanan Panicker has decided to do something about that, having gone out on his own and formed his own company: Dangerous Goods Management (DGM) India. DGM India is a fully recognized dangerous goods training entity in the Indian air cargo market and Panicker is possibly one of the few experts in dangerous goods in the country. In this experience we look at the complex world of air cargo. Though there are not a lot of passenger flights happening so far in 2021, the need for air cargo continues. Large planes are still landing at airports around the world as airlines need the high revenues from cargo. If airlines still had combi freighters, now would be a good time to use them. Vinod shares experiences of flying with combi freighters in northern Canada. We explain what's going on underneath the plane – Geoff shares how the plane baggage holds are laid out. He also shares stories of what sometimes happens to skis when the load is really large. The space is not forgiving and in narrow body planes the bags are often hand loaded like a three-dimensional game of Tetris. Wide body planes utilize specialized containers. Vinod shares a story of how his bags were checked through, but he wasn't, and how ground teams in Amsterdam had to go deep into the plane to find them. Vinod shares the experience he had with sports teams – particularly wheelchair basketball and the challenges they caused with cargo loading. We discuss other unique cargo items – like coffins, human ashes, or firearms. The pilot needs to know what's in the aircraft – especially if it is hazardous. IATA has classified nine different categories for Dangerous Goods. Vinod shares his experience of tourists who were camping and who couldn't fly back with their stoves. Lithium-ion batteries are a huge risk when packed as cargo. Vinod shares his experience seeing a very famous Formula 1 car as cargo in Barbados. In addition, there are numerous living things that are shipped as cargo. Crickets, chicks (Geoff shares a story of chicks escaping the cargo hold in Calgary), and pets. Some pets fly really well, others unfortunately not. Vinod shares his logistics experience of shipping rescue dogs to Canada from Taiwan. Meanwhile, Vinod shares a story of dealing with horses as cargo. We look at the current situation for vaccine shipping – and the unique challenges of cold temperatures and physics of dry ice. Remember that the majority of cargo planes are older, and some may need to be retrofitted with current technology. Hats off to all in the industry at this critical time.
