A developer who sought a variance related to the size of water lines for fire hydrants in a subdivision planned for C.R. 150 north of Floresville has withdrawn the request. Wilson County Permitting and Development Director Luz Serrato, who serves as the chairman of the Wilson County Development Review Committee, said after the committee's Feb. 15 meeting that H.R. Regardless, Serrato said the committee gave the project an unfavorable recommendation. It...Article Link
Concerns over the sufficiency of water lines proposed for a subdivision on C.R. 400 east of Floresville will be among the reasons why the Wilson County Development Review Committee will hold a special meeting Thursday, Feb. 15, at 9 a.m. Committee Chairman Luz Serrato, the county's permits and development coordinator, said after the committee's Feb. 6 meeting that HR Partners Ltd. is seeking a variance from rules requiring a 6-inch water line for the subdivision's fire hydrants. “The new regulation is 6 inches,” Serrato said. “They're trying to do 4 inches for the hydrants because the property is grandfathered.” There...Article Link

People with disabilities are underrepresented in STEM fields, and all too often, they face isolation and ableism in academia. Uncharted: How Scientists Navigate Their Own Health, Research, and Experiences of Bias (Columbia UP, 2023) is a collection of powerful first-person stories by current and former scientists with disabilities or chronic conditions who have faced changes in their careers, including both successes and challenges, because of their health. It gives voice to common experiences that are frequently overlooked or left unspoken. These deeply personal accounts describe not only health challenges but also the joys, sorrows, humor, and wonder of science and scientists. With a breadth of perspectives on being disabled or chronically ill, these stories highlight the intersectionality of minoritized identities with the disability community. Uncharted features essays by contributors who are d/Deaf, blind, neurodivergent, wheelchair users, have experienced traumatic brain injuries, have blood sugar disorders, have rare medical diagnoses, or have received psychiatric diagnoses, among many others. In many cases, the scientific field is not fully accessible to them, and they frankly describe struggling as well as thriving alongside their conditions. Skylar Bayer is a marine ecologist and science communicator. Currently a marine habitat resource specialist in the NOAA Fisheries Alaska Regional Office, she received her Ph.D. from the University of Maine's School of Marine Sciences for research on the sex lives of scallops and is a producer for the Story Collider. Joel Serrato is today's guest, and Andy is so excited to have him on the show! Joel has been named a top wedding photographer by Harper's Bazaar and Martha Stewart Weddings, and his photography is based on capturing pure moments of authentic emotions. Some of his noteworthy work includes work for Pat Benatar, Tamara Mowry, and Adam Housley, and the quality of his work simply speaks for itself. Joel details how his original interest was in filmmaking but that his husband Jose Villa got him interested in wedding photography. He touches upon whether he prefers digital or film (and makes a pretty bold statement that might surprise you), what he does to bring in compatible clientele, and whether or not he has managed to find a balance between being a professional wedding photographer, a husband, and a father to two little ones. Joel also strongly believes in event professionals supporting each other rather than going up against each other, and he even demonstrates that by reaching out to photographers who got jobs over him and congratulating them. This positivity is something that he also carries with him pretty much everywhere that he goes, and he gives an example of how he managed to make a really good situation out of a literally rainy day, putting on what he calls his “swan face.” This was such a special conversation for Andy because of how kind and thoughtful Joel is, and he really appreciates Joel's time and how open that he was on the show. If you enjoyed Andy's conversation with Joel Serrato, then he would really love it if you were to share this episode with at least three people you know who might also enjoy it. Be sure to also subscribe to the podcast if you aren't already so that you never miss a new episode and to leave a top review wherever you listen. That really helps out Andy and the show!

This is called CITIZEN-BASED TAXATION, and the USA is one of only two nations that tax their citizens in this way. Many of these American Citizens who live abroad own no property or assets in the United States, and have no connection to the USA other than their citizenship. How about RESIDENCY-BASED TAXATION? The non-profit organization American Citizens Abroad has done some research on this taxation issue, and Marylouise Serrato speaks with me about it in this episode. Marylouise Serrato is the Executive Director for American Citizens Abroad. Check out this webinar which highlights the findings of ACA concerning the taxation of American citizens who live abroad. #TheCominHomePodcastWithJohnAlan #taxation #IRS
This week, guest Dr. Claudia Serrato opens our minds to the sensual, political, and vital nature of our relationship to food. Our bodies are a landscape in their own right and with Indigenous feminist theory in mind, this episode bears wittness to the cycles of gastronmies and of life that keep us tied to the earth. Claudia turns to her own landscape to remind us that there are times to dry up and times to bloom. To consume food means that we enter into a relationship with it, we physically embody it. In this conversation Claudia and Ayana dive into what that relationship could be, and how embodiment may be a spiritual quest. Honoring foodways and the gifts of the earth is about more than just changing our diets, but is rather a cultural, spiritual, and political project. How might we honor both where we came from and where we are now in ways that respect traditional foodways alongside place-based geographies/ food ways? Decolonizing the body and the landscape also means decolonizing the kitchen.Through the sacred work of food sovereignty, we can create a better kitchen, a better palate – one that resists the violence of colonization and globalization. This work is the toil of gardening, the pain of remembering, the prayers of the season. This is not easy work, but it is vital, human, and intimate. Dr. Claudia Serrato is a cultural and culinary anthropologist, an Indigenous plant-based chef, and a food justice activist scholar. Claudia has been writing, speaking, and cooking up decolonized flavors for over a decade by ReIndigenizing her diet with Mesoamerican foods and foodways, cooking traditions and nutrition, and culinary ways of knowing. We chat with Marylouise Serrato, Executive Director of American Citizens Abroad (ACA), and Charles Bruce, ACA Legal Counsel and ACA Global Foundation's (ACAGF) Chairman, about District Economics Group's (DEG) recent study completed in support of Residence-Based Taxation (RBT). We discuss how the research helps advocacy for RBT; why revenue neutrality is important; why ACA Global Foundation worked with DEG on this study; the response from Capitol Hill, US Treasury, and the IRS to the research; and much more! Given the importance of this study, and the current Congressional interest in it, we are sharing this on our ACA Podcast. This research, funded by ACAGF, is critical to ACA's advocacy work on RBT. ACA has already presented the study to offices on Capitol Hill and is setting up more and more meetings with key Congressional offices and the tax writing committees. How to unlearn social and professional conditioning to unlock your one true self.THIS WEEK'S TOPIC:In order for us to be powerful and live powerfully, we must first understand who we are - and who we are not. That will guide us towards who we are meant to be, who we want to become, what we can let go of, and what we need to heal. Only then can we truly thrive. You'll also takeaway:That we are products of our conditioning--which we have to unlearn. That our true self has been conditioned out of us--and we have to recover it.That they are powerful--and claiming that power will make us whole.THIS WEEK'S GUEST:Dr. Margie Serrato is a cultural expert on gender and nonconformity. She is profoundly against submitting to cultural norms and expectations about who we are supposed to be as individuals. She is a trained and Certified Professional Coach who focuses on liberation and empowerment with clients. Why this approach? Because in order to be the magnificent beings we are meant to be, we must free ourselves from everything that we are not--and, in doing so, make space to design and create the lives that we actually want for ourselves.Support the show
