John Humphrey and Aaron Alexander take a trip to Zamunda for the ultimate classic comedy experience—Coming to America! Directed by John Landis (The Blues Brothers, Trading Places), this Eddie Murphy-led masterpiece follows Prince Akeem (Eddie Murphy, Beverly Hills Cop, Shrek) as he embarks on a journey to Queens, New York, to find a woman who will love him for who he truly is. Alongside his hilarious and ever-loyal best friend Semmi (Arsenio Hall, Harlem Nights, Black Dynamite), Akeem trades his royal lifestyle for a humble job at McDowell's, the fast-food restaurant that totally isn't McDonald's, all while attempting to win the heart of Lisa McDowell (Shari Headley, The Haves and the Have Nots). With an unforgettable supporting cast that includes James Earl Jones (Star Wars, The Lion King) as the commanding King Jaffe Joffer, John Amos (Good Times, Die Hard 2) as Cleo McDowell, and Madge Sinclair (Roots, The Lion King) as Queen Aoleon, the film delivers some of the most quotable moments in comedy history. We react to all of the legendary scenes, including Akeem & Semmi Arrive in Queens, The Barbershop Scene, The First McDowell's Encounter, Akeem Meets Lisa, Sexual Chocolate's Hilarious Performance, The Stolen Money Scene, The Bathing Scene, Semmi's Expensive Lifestyle, The Subway Proposal, and The Grand Wedding Reveal! This film not only gave us some of the best comedic performances but also introduced multiple iconic characters played by Murphy and Hall, showcasing their legendary range. And let's not forget the incredible soundtrack and cultural impact that made this film a staple of ‘80s cinema. Plus, with the sequel Coming 2 America continuing the story, we reflect on the franchise's legacy and how it holds up today! Ryan and Cindy start their fifth year of podcasting with a very…lackluster Pay Per View showing as we go down hill on the back half of 1999. We go to Charlotte or in one case Hell, for the WWF's September PPV. Among the many topics: The return of Vince McMahon proving that in 1999 gone forever meant approximately 7 weeks. Vince winning the World title as the push Triple H as hard as possible campaign shows no signs of slowing down. The referees unionizing and going on strike, for unsafe working condition, forcing SCAB referees. Steve Blackman turning his murderous rage to Val Venis and then attempting to go after a conspicuous buxom EMT. D-Lo Brown getting a measure of revenge on Sexual Chocolate. Jeff Jarrett and Chyna having a lackluster match, that luckily gets some personality infused by Mae Young and Fabulous Moolah. The New Age Outlaws reunite because…reasons? A recap of the epic Big Boss Man/Al Snow feud and the Kennel From Hell that, well IYKYK and if not I recommend the Mick Foley/Kevin Kelly commentary from DVD. The sudden exit of Ken Shamrock from the WWF and the shock that he never came back for even a cameo. Chris Jericho's WWF PPV debut in a good match with X-Pac that suffers from very late crowd heat. The British Bulldog's back and bigger than ever! We also talk about the previous Smackdown featuring 5 (!) Triple H matches. The Six-Pack match kind of just happening for no reason, but it being kind of fun I guess The night after featuring the infamous This Is Your Life Rock featuring Yurple, Mr. Rocko, and the Rock's highschool girlfriend offering him a nice piece of that Poontang Pie! Enjoy!

In 1988, Eddie Murphy and director John Landis combined forces to create "Coming to America," a romantic comedy that went on to become an emblematic staple of 80s cinema. On the surface, it's a story about a prince from a fictional African country who travels to America in search of true love. But as we delve deeper, it reveals a myriad of layers that blend humour, cultural commentary, and romance in a unique blend that stands the test of time. The movie embarks on the journey of Prince Akeem of Zamunda (Eddie Murphy), who, against the backdrop of opulence and traditionalism, wishes to find love that transcends his royal status. Rejecting the arranged marriage set up by his parents, he and his confidante, Semmi (Arsenio Hall), decide to go to America—specifically, Queens, New York—to find Akeem's queen. This simple yet intriguing premise serves as a foundation for the exploration of various thematic undercurrents. "Coming to America" subtly underscores the tension between tradition and individualism. While Akeem's motivations are romantic, his journey is also an act of rebellion against Zamundan royal customs. There's a message of self-determination and autonomy, underscored by his desire to be "liked for who he is" rather than his princely status. One of the film's most notable achievements is its rich character tapestry. Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall, through their multiple roles, showcase an astonishing comedic range. From the hilarious barbershop patrons to the charismatic Reverend Brown and the unforgettable Sexual Chocolate band, these multifaceted roles add depth and vibrancy to the story. However, it's Murphy's portrayal of Prince Akeem that truly stands out. He masterfully captures the essence of a young man torn between duty and desire, seamlessly blending innocence, determination, and humour. Likewise, Arsenio Hall as Semmi wonderfully complements Akeem, offering both comedic relief and a contrasting perspective on their American adventure.Supporting characters, from Lisa McDowell (Shari Headley) to her father Cleo (John Amos) and the hilarious antagonist Darryl (Eriq La Salle), provide the cultural backdrop against which Akeem's journey unfolds. Their interactions with the prince not only contribute to the movie's comedic moments but also its emotional depth, presenting a nuanced portrayal of urban America in the 1980s.Beyond its romantic and comedic plotline, "Coming to America" offers an exploration of cultural contrasts. The lavish and exaggerated depiction of African royalty against the backdrop of urban Queens provides ample ground for both humour and reflection. The film plays with stereotypes, sometimes reinforcing them but often subverting them for comedic effect. One might argue that the film occasionally walks a fine line between genuine cultural appreciation and caricature. However, given the context of its release and its overall intentions, it largely manages to stay on the right side of this divide. The film also provides an interesting examination of the American Dream from an outsider's perspective. Through Akeem's eyes, America is portrayed as a land of opportunity, equality, and potential—a place where even a prince can start from the bottom. The film's soundtrack, peppered with hits from the era, adds to the movie's charm. From the catchy "Soul Glo" jingle to the memorable dance sequence set to "The Greatest Love of All," the music plays an integral role in creating the film's vibrant atmosphere.Cinematographically, "Coming to America" is a visual treat. The stark contrast between the extravagant palaces of Zamunda and the bustling streets of Queens is captured beautifully, helping to further the narrative and the humour."Coming to America" is undoubtedly a product of its time, yet its core messages and humour allow it to transcend its era. While some elements might seem outdated by contemporary standards, the film remains a testament to Eddie Murphy's brilliance and the universality of its themes. At its heart, it's a tale about finding one's place in the world, breaking free from societal constraints, and pursuing genuine love. Combine that with impeccable comedic timing, memorable characters, and a catchy soundtrack, and it's no wonder "Coming to America" remains an enduring classic. Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcast If you are looking to start a podcast and want a host or get guests to pipe in remotely, look no further than Riverside.fmClick the link below https://riverside.fm/?utm_campaign=campaign_1&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=rewardful&via=matthew

Let be honest. We live in interesting and changing times. And what we watched as kids was back then. Is well a little more complicated then we realized back then. But why shouldn't it be? Why can't we look back on something we once enjoyed and ask questions about it? What it really meant? What was the underlying message? This is an episode we recorded back in September of this year but I failed to post. It is a fun conversation between Beaveman, Swan, and Tromondae whom I like to call Sexual Chocolate. It is a typical conversation. We talk about wet dreams, pooping disasters, why you shouldn't eat your toothpaste, and of course a Q&A with Tromondae regarding LGBTQ terminology. It is just what you have come to expect from us. Complete idiocy. Consider it our gift to you. An extra episode just for fun. I mean, it is Christmas time. Enjoy!

January 31st / February 1st, 1999: At "Halftime Heat," The Rock defends his WWF Title against Mankind in an Empty Arena Match, but which of these bitter rivals will come out on top this time around? Then we move on to "Raw," where Vince McMahon comes up with a plan: he'll head to Victoria, Texas to provoke "Stone Cold" Steve Austin into hitting him, which would cancel their match at "St. Valentine's Day Massacre." Shane McMahon gets to run the show in Vince's absence, but his ego may once again get the better of him when he calls out his recent rival X-Pac. In our main event, the DX/Corporation feud continues to escalate as Triple-H steps into the ring with Kane.... inside of a steel cage. The Ministry of Darkness have their first match on "Raw" against The Brood, which results in The Undertaker attempting to murder Gangrel by hanging him with a noose. And as if that wasn't enough, The Ministry then proceeds to add some new members to the group later on in the show. The Rock and Mankind have another promo duel to set up their next match, and this face-off is highlighted by the fact that The Rock is legitimately losing his voice while he's speaking. After last week's miscommunication, Val Venis and Billy Gunn go head-to-head in an attempt to settle their differences while WWF Intercontinental Champion Ken Shamrock looks on from the commentary table. In a Hardcore Tag Team Match, "The Road Dogg" & Al Snow once again team up to face The Acolytes. P.M.S. continues to manipulate D'Lo Brown weeks after he accidentally caused Terri Runnels' miscarriage, and this time they're forcing him to wrestle The Big Boss Man. However, after the match ends, some new information about Terri's pregnancy comes to the forefront. Droz squares off with Kurrgan in what turns out to be the final match on "Raw" featuring a member of The Oddities. Mark Henry once again interrupts an interview with Debra, which proves to be a mistake for "Sexual Chocolate." In one of the more pointless segments in recent memory, The Blue Meanie provides us with an "all-male dance revue" for about ten seconds before Goldust thankfully attacks him. Plus, the WWF airs their classic commercial during Super Bowl XXXIII, Chyna cuts her first heel promo, we see what Max Mini looks like without his mask, and we find out which WWF employee starred in the 1995 "Mortal Kombat" movie! Meanwhile over on "Nitro," we get two hilarious instances of people botching someone else's name! Enjoying the Podcast? E-mail us at rawattitudepodcast@gmail.com or Tweet us @RawAttitudePod! December 21st, 1998: Vince McMahon leaves the arena to go train for the Royal Rumble, and so he leaves his son Shane in charge for the night. However, that may prove to be a mistake as an out-of-his-element Shane ends up booking himself into his very first wrestling match against Mankind. Triple-H & X-Pac team up to face The Rock and a man who is also making his in-ring debut: Test! Mark Henry & D'Lo Brown are scheduled to face The Headbangers, but "Sexual Chocolate" may not be able to resist the advances of Terri Runnels and Jacqueline. Ken Shamrock puts his Intercontinental Title on the line against "Badd Ass" Billy Gunn.... or does he? WWF Hardcore Champion The Big Boss Man squares off with "The Road Dogg" in what is supposed to be a non-title match, but Jesse James may be able to convince him to put the belt up for grabs. Five weeks after being pushed off the TitanTron, Road Warrior Hawk returns to the WWF and reveals some dark secrets about his relationship with Droz. Even though The Blue Blazer was unmasked last week, the caped superhero returns to seek revenge on Steve Blackman. Gangrel steps into the ring with Al Snow, and a post-match "bloodbath" may cause Al to go completely insane (well okay, more than usual). The Acolytes take on J.O.B. Squad members Bob Holly & Scorpio in what turns out to be the final "Raw" match for the man formerly known as Flash Funk. Plus, Jeff Jarrett rants about what pisses him off, "Classy" Freddie Blassie dresses up as a perverted mall Santa Claus for some reason, and The Corporation shockingly adds a new member to its growing ranks! Meanwhile in WCW, we get the final episode of "Nitro" before the controversial "Starrcade 1998" pay-per-view, with the highlight of the show being Scott Steiner mocking someone for using steroids (yes, seriously). December 13th / 14th, 1998: The WWF gives us a lousy pay-per-view followed by an awesome episode of "Raw," and Sal from WrestleMania SalVation is joining the Podcast to break it all down! "Rock Bottom: In Your House" Card: WWF Champion The Rock vs. Mankind Buried Alive Match: "Stone Cold" Steve Austin vs. The Undertaker WWF Tag Team Champions The New Age Outlaws vs. Ken Shamrock & The Big Boss Man Striptease Match: Goldust vs. Jeff Jarrett Steve Blackman vs. Owen Hart The Brood vs. The J.O.B. Squad D'Lo Brown & Mark Henry vs. Val Venis & The Godfather The Headbangers vs. The Oddities December 14th, 1998 "Monday Night Raw": D-Generation-X opens the show by parodying The Corporation, which leads to Commissioner Shawn Michaels scheduling two title matches tonight: The Rock defending his WWF Championship against Triple-H, and The New Age Outlaws putting their Tag Titles on the line against Ken Shamrock & The Big Boss Man in a rematch from "Rock Bottom." Vince and Shane McMahon reveal "Stone Cold" Steve Austin's number for the Royal Rumble match, and then we get the surprising announcement of who the second participant in the match will be. Also, because Mankind and Kane pissed off Vince last night, The Chairman schedules them to fight each other in a No Holds Barred Match tonight on "Raw." Goldust goes one-on-one with The Blue Blazer, but Steve Blackman ends up getting the last laugh after the match when he finally manages to unmask The Blazer! Later on, Blackman faces Jeff Jarrett in a Guitar-on-a-Pole Match because..... Vince Russo. J.O.B. Squad members Scorpio & Bob Holly go up against Mark Henry & D'Lo Brown, with the highlight being a pre-match promo where "Sexual Chocolate" tells us what happened on the night of his date with Chyna. Val Venis & The Godfather step into the ring with two men who are teaming up for the very first time: Edge & Christian! Plus, a debuting superstar joins The Corporation, The Brood vow to give someone a "bloodbath," and The Rock hilariously mocks the catchphrases of WCW wrestlers! Enjoying the Podcast?
