Do you feel pretty inadequate, as a Gospel-Spreader?In this retelling episode, we're looking back to the story from John 4, where Jesus interrupts his trip to Galilee to have a conversation with the least likely Gospel-Spreader: A Samaritan woman who had been repeatedly divorced and was now living with another man. John is the only Gospel writer to include this story. Why? He wants us to see that Jesus came for everyone, and that anyone can help share the good news.  Bible Passage: John 4:1-42Referring Back to Episode: The Truth About Your Thirstiness for More with Mary DemuthTranscriptMentioned: Storyrunners with Cru.Freebie:  Live Like It's True WorkbookMusic: Cade Popkin Music

Grief: Stuffers & Sharers

Coping

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 27, 2023 9:51

Kevin: Well, welcome back, everybody, for another episode of Coping. Kathy and are happy to be here with you guys today. Kathy: Yes. So welcome everyone. Last episode, we talked about grief in the four parts of ourselves: our body, our heart, our mind and our spirit. Kevin: That's right. And in our quest for wholeness and reintegration, we begin coping with our loss in one of two main ways. And that's what we want to talk about today. Kathy: That sounds really interesting. I'm really eager to hear more. Let's get started. Kathy: So you mentioned that we often cope with our loss in one of two ways. Can you explain more? Kevin: Yeah. So in my work with families and individuals at end of life, I have begun to realize that there's two main coping strategies when it comes to talking about our grief. There are two types of grievers. The first are the stuffers. The stuffers are those that hold their grief inside. Now, they do this for all sorts of reasons, but some of the reasons I've heard include it's too painful to talk about. I'm afraid if I start, I'm not going to be able to stop talking about it. In my culture, my family, my religion, expressing emotion is frowned upon. And of course, there's those social stigmas like men don't cry or I'm trying to hold it all together and be strong for my family. Kevin: See, the main obstacle for Stuffers, their tendency is to internalize their loss through silence, hoping to digest their pain. In other words, if I hold in my pain. I can hold myself together. And of course, when it comes to grieving, this can be very counterproductive. Kathy: That sounds exactly like me. I know that I always go inward when I'm dealing with anything, but when there's a loss, since my brain is in overdrive, trying to figure out how to cope and find a way to move forward, I am, what you just said, attempting to digest my pain. And manage it. Right. Kevin: You're showing your strength through what you can handle. Kathy: Sure. Kevin: But the challenge with that is that grief needs to be processed. Kathy: So would you say that you're a Stuffer too? Kevin: Oh, that's a good question. Yeah. And actually, I am not a stuffer. I'm the other kind of griever. So the second kind of griever are the sharers. Right. So you're a stuffer, but I'm actually a sharer. So the sharer expresses their grief any chance that they can get. And they do this for all sorts of reasons. But some of the most common reasons or the ones that I've experienced myself or I've heard are “I'm being vulnerable and authentic. That's why I'm talking about my grief”. Or, “I don't want to be superficial. That's why I talk about the hard things”. Or, “I like connecting with people. We should all talk about this stuff more often”. Or, “sharing my story makes me feel less alone.” Kevin: You see, the main obstacle and tendency for sharers is to externalize their loss through story, hoping to diffuse the pain. In other words, if I get my pain out, I can get back to myself. So where you see, the main tendency of stuffers is to utilize silence and hoping that they can digest the pain, it's the sharer who tries to externalize their loss through story, hoping to diffuse the pain. What we need to move away from is the silence or the story. Move away from trying to digest or diffuse and try to rethink about how we can process our grief. Kathy: Right, but what I don't understand the question is what's wrong with sharing your story? Isn't that what the whole goal would be? Kevin: That's a great question. There's nothing wrong with sharing your story, but we all know those people who share the same story over and over and over again, especially as it's related to somebody that they've lost or something that they've lost or a change that's happened in their life. We refer to these people as being "story stuck". I think we've all been there in our lives, though there may be something in our life right now that we're stories stuck in. And what happens is that we're telling the story again and again, feeling the emotions, the highs and lows of the experience, but not processing the underlying pain and the trauma that that story caused in our lives and the identity shift that's come from that loss. Kevin: And so it really requires, whenever you're getting into story of stuckness, it usually requires some type of professional help so that somebody who's trained in processing that story to help really break it down and get you to that meaning making in order to find a way forward through it. Kathy: Okay, so that makes sense. So for the sharers, story stuck is the issue, but for stuffers like me, how do I break my cycle? Is there something that I can work on? Kevin: Yeah, so I think it's really just about building a practice of externalizing that pain, and a few simple ways to do that is through journaling. Oftentimes the stuffers are naturally introverted, and so journaling is a practice that doesn't feel so daunting and overwhelming to talk about your feelings. You get to process through writing. I think also stuffers can practice externalizing that loss through sharing with a trusted friend, inviting them to coffee or a phone call, just to say, hey, I want to share this thing going on with you. I just need you to listen. I'm not asking for advice or for help. I just want to take some time to share with you what's on my heart today. And I'm not even sure exactly what I'm feeling or how I'm doing. Kevin: I just want to tell you what's on my mind and have a space to do that. And I know that you're a safe person who could hold that space with me. So I think whether with a trusted friend or in a journal or if you feel like you've attempted those two things and you're still feeling a little bit stuck or feeling silent, reaching out for some therapeutic help might also be wise as well. Kathy: Wow, that's really helpful. And so just to clarify, what are the two main ways of processing, again? Kevin: The two tendencies of grief really are the stuffing and the sharing. Kathy: Is it a possibility to be a blend of both? Kevin: Oh, absolutely. Yeah. This is actually one of the most common questions that we get when we include this in a grief workshop. There's times in your life that you may be stuffing. There may be other times in your life, other types of losses that you share, and there may even be some spaces in your life that you feel comfortable sharing and other spaces where you decide to stuff. And that's natural. Kathy: That's helpful. And so remind me, what is the practice I can use as a stuffer? Kevin: So as a stuffer, the tendency is to internalize, and so the practice is to externalize. So what you want to try to do is get the story out. And you can do that through journaling, talking with a trusted friend or speaking to a therapist or a counselor, somebody who can walk you through that story. Kathy: And then for sharers like you? Kevin: For folks like me, we must seek ways to focus on our pain rather than the story so that we might begin to process the loss. So Sharers can also utilize journaling, and instead of journaling the story, we can hone in on the pain, hone in on the loss, hone in on the change that's occurring. So what I recommend for Sharers is to move away from narrative journaling and start doing bullet point journaling. And what I would like for Sharers to do in their journaling is to use a list in order to identify the list of losses that have occurred. That's going to help us focus in on the pain behind the story rather than just the narrative that can-- Kathy: Keep us stuck. Kevin: Yeah, exactly. It's going to actually help us feel less stuck because we're moving away from that story of stuckness. Kathy: Well, Kevin, this was all super, super helpful. As we think about the ways that we process our grief, I'm wondering, as we end our conversation, if we could all just pause for a moment and ask themselves this question: are you a Stuffer? Are you a sharer? If you are a Stuffer, what are you currently stuffing right now? If you are a Sharer, what do you need to focus on to process this upcoming week? Kevin: So whatever you may be coping with, blessings to you.

There's no question that walking through something as painful as watching your child suffer will cause you to question your faith in God. Jordan St. Cyr, Canadian Worship Leader and artist, tells us about his daughter, Emory, and the health trials she's encountered since joining us here on this earth.Jordan's testimony is actually one of encouragement for all of us who have or are currently walking through a time of testing. He addresses that difficult time frame right between the blessing or miracle and when we're just believing in faith for that miracle. It's a beautiful place to exist, but it can cause us to fall away or draw closer to our Creator.Matthew 22:37-40 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'[c] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.'[d] 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”- - - - - - Sponsor InformationWorship Leader Institutehttps://www.worshipleaderinstitute.com/Additional Linkshttps://www.jordanstcyr.com/https://www.instagram.com/worshipleader/https://worshipleader.com/all-podcasts/https://authenticmedia.company/https://worshipleader.com/all-podcasts/our-host/- - - - - - Please subscribe to our social channels for more information and great content surrounding building a lifestyle of worship. Have you ever wondered why God didn't answer your prayer or why He hasn't removed you from a tough circumstance? Hopefully, today's message will be healing for you as you tune in to listen how God has not forgotten you.. Visit section 4 today @ https://www.harmonychurch.cc/timeline-of-jesus/birth-preparation/. IT'S EASY TO GIVE, text any amount to (859) 459-0316 to get started (or give online @ my.harmonychurch.cc/give ). --------------------------- OPENING ILLUSTRATION: When I was a student pastor I was at this Summer camp and there was this girl that had an amputated leg. It was Middle School camp and if you know anything about middle school, you know kids can be merciless. We had been in worship for the camp and I noticed she got up and went outside. I went out and asked if she was ok. She was broken, kids had been making fun of her because of her disability. She told me she just sometimes wanted it all to end… She wanted to know where God was, why did he let this happen to her… WE: We can all feel that pain, right? We've all questioned whether God even cares b The problem is, most of us never take the time to actually answer the question and we're left with a weak faith that fails at the first sign of negative circumstances. This morning, I want us to look at an early story of from before Jesus' life of John the Baptist's birth… -did you know John the Baptist was mentioned by the ancient Roman/Jewish Historian Josephus? Not just a myth, but a real person who really lived in history… We'll look at this story that so many can identify with and then out of it we'll come back and answer the question - does God even care? Lk 1:5-25 5 In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. 6 Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord's commands and decrees blamelessly. 7 But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old. ILLUSTRATION: I need us to slow down here because I have known several families in my time who have struggled with not being able to have children. It is a deep pain for them to watch their friends have kids, to play with nieces and nephews and long to be able to have their own children and not be able to. I have had them sit in my office and weep as they mourn the children they are unable to bring into this world. It is absolutely heartbreaking. And if that has ever been you, then I want you to hear. Elizabeth and Zechariah know that pain. One of the things I love about the bible is the real stories of real people with real struggles In Zech & Betsy's day, this would not have just been seen as something to be sad over, there is a strong likelihood that they would have been understood as not being righteous enough… Luke makes sure to mention how good they were - “they were both righteous and observed everything, and still they remained childless…” How many nights did Betsy weep over those children How many times did Zech come back after being mocked for not being able to produce a son What would they do with their inheritance Now, they are past the age of bearing children… The dream is gone… 8 Once when Zechariah's division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God, 9 he was chosen by lot, according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense. 10 And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshipers were praying outside. ILLUSTRATION: You ever had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity? You actually met Elvis while he was alive? Ate dinner with a president? For Zech, that's what this moment is like. The Talmud tells us this is literally a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. You got chosen for this event one time… Every single day, twice a day, a priest would go into the Holy place, this is the lobby to the Holy of Holy's it was only the place where only a priest could go. There was a table for the showbread (the bread of the presence - this is the bread David eats and was only for the priests). There is also a menorah - an olive oil lamp. And the table of incense. The priest would go in at the time of prayer and pray this prayer while burning this special incense: HaShem (a name the Jewish people use in place of God because His name is holy) of legions is with us! A stronghold for us is the G-d of Yaakov (Jacob), selah! HaShem of legions, happy is the man who trusts in You! HaShem, deliver us! Our King, answer us on this day we call out to You! May the offerings of Yehudah (Judah) and Jerusalem please HaShem, as in the past and bygone years! This is the prayer Zech is praying - can you imagine him reveling in it? He has not been in this room before - he's dreamed of this moment his whole life, probably thought he may never get to do it… and then his number gets called! He's praying, “Our King, answer us on this day…” 11 Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. 12 When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear. Always the response of someone who meets an angel 13 But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John. 14 He will be a joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice because of his birth, 15 for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He is never to take wine or other fermented drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit even before he is born. 16 He will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. 17 And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the parents to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous—to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” 18 Zechariah asked the angel, “How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.” 19 The angel said to him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news. 20 And now you will be silent and not able to speak until the day this happens, because you did not believe my words, which will come true at their appointed time.” 21 Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple. 22 When he came out, he could not speak to them. They realized he had seen a vision in the temple, for he kept making signs to them but remained unable to speak. 23 When his time of service was completed, he returned home. 24 After this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion. 25 “The Lord has done this for me,” she said. “In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace among the people.” Gabriel - the same Gabriel that announces to Mary is now telling Zech he is going to have a son and his son is going to turn Israel back to God… That's like Moses stuff, that's Elijah stuff - that's prophets of old stuff But Zech can't believe Him… Impossible - we are both old… So Gabe tells him he's going to not be able to talk till the boy is born… I always crack up when I read Elizabeth saying: “The Lord has done this for me,” I know she's talking about the baby, but come on, some of it has to be about her husband not being able to talk ;) It's an incredible story, but maybe you're sitting there going, “but Kent, what does that have to do with where's God when hard stuff happens?” Can I point out something maybe you missed because I zoomed past it? Remember, Zech is praying “Our King answer us…” and Gabe says this: 13 But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Which prayer? Which prayer has been heard? The context of the angel's answer is not the prayer that Zech is praying right now… The context is that the prayer God is answering is the prayer about Zechariah & Elizabeth being childless But get this… They are old at this point… I can't prove it, but they have likely stopped praying that prayer… The prayer of, “God give me a baby,” is the prayer of a young family. I'm pretty sure that Zechariah and Elizabeth had given up on that prayer years ago… But God never did. Can I say that again… You may have given up, but that doesn't mean that God has given up… “your prayer has been heard.” God heard the prayer of Zech & Betsy and he responded, not when they thought He should and not in the way they would have had it. But He did. CLOSING: Some of you are probably still wondering what happened to the little girl at the beginning of my sermon, “kent, was she ok?” She was fine and we talked and she understood that God had made her stronger than most and she could endure it. One of the things I've found is people HATE it when I tell half a story in my sermons to get to a point I want to make and then never finish. When there is a cliffhanger. We want resolution… Part of the problem for humans is we live in a world and story that is unfinished, and a lot of times we judge our story before the conclusion has been revealed. We want resolution and God is after restoration… I think that's part of the reason Pauls said: 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[k] neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Let your hope be in the fact that God's love for you in Jesus is unshakeable and know that He will work out circumstances in His time - whether it's in this life or the next… ----------------------

After being lured out of her home by four older teenage girls, Shanda Sharer, only 12 years old, was brutalized for more than 9 hours until her death the following morning on January 11, 1992. The death of a child never makes sense. The death of a child at the hands of individuals who are all still children as well, between the ages of 15 and 17, makes even less sense. In her short time on earth, Shanda brought light into this world and had an energy that attracted others to her and she was willing to be a friend to all. She was not allowed to share all that she had to offer in its full capacity because her life was cut short by the acts of four others... three that had never even met her. This case is baffling... because we all ask why? Even to this day... why? And there will never be any solid answers.
