In 20 16, we had started with wholesale and some other stuff. 20 16, we took a trip to China and went to Canton Fair, and met some suppliers, and decided that we should be doing private label, because she's from China. OK, there's better reasons to start doing private label, and we didn't really know what the **** we were doing. We know we've kind of figured it out, we had some successes and some failures, but really early on, we started really focusing on learning from everything we were doing, and looking at the data and trying to understand it. We didn't know PPC that, well, We didn't know the algorithm, We didn't know keywords, we didn't understand much of any of that.

We had specialty packaging, company back in the states, Got rid of those or sold those. And then we still have a manufacturing company in China right now got a bunch of different companies. My own brands, I I live for Vertical integration. And I will just keep it like that because I can go on for a half-hour about things that we try to do, but vertical integration from a to Z vertical integration. Right, so I know that when we were picking your brain a little bit in Vegas a few weeks ago, you had some pretty good insights of opportunities that Amazon sellers are missing out on, and also some mistakes that you see Amazon sellers make. so since you, Wow. So, I'm really an e-commerce business owner first agency on a second, because I also operate my own e-commerce brand, is called Lucky Kit. We design products for kids with learning disabilities, including autism, sensory processing disorder, ADHD. And I started that, ran back in 2017 because my son have learning disabilities. So, he's really a mission driven brand. And this is also something that I really feel very, very passionate about, and I had been a special education advocate for the past 10 years of my life, since my son was born, as well.

We've got a We've got a Doozy one for today, and only we have these, Steven Pope from my Amazon guy, I talked to Steven and the other day, and he got me really excited because we share a lot of the same methodologies, but a lot of also a lot of the same experiences. And, Stephen sounds like you, You've learned a thing or two about Amazon over the years. So, tell us who Steven Pope is, where you began, and where you are now. Well, back in the day, I used to be a television reporter, did that for awhile and one day I was in the middle of a blizzard. And I was at 10 o'clock at night, Biggest Blizzard, Wisconsin, and seen in like a decade. And I missed my cue to go on the air. It was a terrible moment in my life and I felt like an idiot, my hair froze over, literally froze over and I decided at that moment I wanted to be at home making money online. So, I broke into e-commerce. I'd spent a decade working on the corporate side doing marketing and corporate jobs, everything from womans plus size clothing, kitchen equipments, two gold and silver coins, eventually, after working for four fields startups. And a lighting company was the last one. They laid me off. I asked myself this question. Have I peaked, and the answer to that question only took me 48 hours. 48 hours later I signed my first client and started an agency called My Amazon. And, the way that happened was, I was in the laundry room with the wife, She's like, Let's go on vacation. I'm like, I gotta solve this problem. We got three months of severance. Let me. let me just get the work right now just said, OK, fine. And I'm like, what do you wanna do? And, and I said, well, I've been side hustle consulting Amazon for like six years. I'm O G on the platform. I was part of the beta advertising testing. I know more about Amazon than anybody, I know.

So that's generally how business works. We're going to be talking about selling more in terms of upsells, cross sells, down sells, and then continuity and Amazon sellers normally think in terms of product listings and things like that.But really, the way that you create value for your customer and that you make more money per customer is by doing these things.So, I'm just gonna walk through each one of these and we'll jump into it Shawn.So an upsell is a bigger or better version of the exact same thing that you're already selling. And we're gonna get into some examples here in a minute.Just gonna give you, the high level definition across cell is a complimenting product that can enhance the product of the first product that you sold them, right?A down sell would be a cheaper or smaller option or a stripped down version of the same product, and then a continuity.It's pretty obvious, but it's a membership or subscription. You know, that typically would be billed monthly or integrate recurring method, so we're going to jump into how each one of these can help you grow your Amazon business, because no, a lot of sellers are just plain.Ignoring this Yeah. Welcome, everyone. Today is going to be a quick, short episode.Seth and I just finished yesterday, our annual retreat, where we host these other amazing entrepreneurs from all over the world, man, we are cooked from three days of intense sharing. And you know what it says?I'm so thankful man that we have the opportunity to be in a position where This type of business is Amazon third party selling.The sky truly is the limit and really, our sales and our profitability is limited to the amount that we can grow and and and share with others. You know? And as we add to our arsenal of tactics you know like over the weekend it was just amazing of all the information that was shared there. And, you know, really it humbles me set to be a part of that and you know, to have access to such such brilliant minds in our industry. And it makes you start thinking. So, that's why you, and I decided to talk about upsells and cross sells, because like you said, set, most Amazon sellers, it's not even on your radar because you're just focused on grabbing that initial order.So if you think about something like McDonald's, for example, which is in America, at least, we're all super familiar with, if you think about, like, a double or talk about the, a hamburger, or McDonald's, you know, a simple hamburger, An upsell could be a double hamburger with cheese or a double. Cheeseburger OK.A cross sale, like you said.Something that would enhance the experience is adding french fries and a soft drink.A down sell maybe like a junior size, hamburger, or a kid sized hamburger. And continuity at McDonald's can be just as simple as a download, the macdonalds app, let us send you coupons and offers for free food and discounts.3:28You know, you don't have to overthink this but it's, it's very, very important When you understand this type of thing that you implement that in your business. But, you know, we did that by brick by brick, small, tiny bricks, one on another, to lead to where we are, You know, when you think about how an ant devours a tiger or how a slave build a pyramid back in ancient Egypt.1:49Know what happened. one brick at a time. one tiny bite at a time.1:53So, it's those small, fundamental steps when repeated, can almost complete any task laid out before you. So, no set.2:03It seems to me, you know, whenever our business was struggling, if you'll remember, we were either focused way up here on these, these huge tactics that were supposed to advance us, you know, fast forward and skip all the boring stuff.2:17Or conversely, we were focused on, know what, wherever trip hazard was at our feet, instead of just moving straight forward ahead, taking care of the boring stuff first, before you ever decide to tackle something huge.2:31Well, I think you're right, John. So let's, know. one of the things that comes to mind as you were talking areas like what is the fundamental, what is the boring stuff? Well, everything becomes boring once you have it nailed.2:42Like, everything becomes routine like once the latest and greatest strategy and tactic that you're discovering now. If you do it as many times as What it really takes to succeed, it's gonna be boring. So, like when you know, when we were first starting out shot, I remember we would discover like A strategy like that were amazing.3:02And then we come back to our team and be like, did you do A and B, because A and B, you know, every single time we knew that, it would work.3:09And they weren't, because it was the, the old thing, the boring thing.3:13So whatever it is, that's, the, that's driving the results in your business that could be different than our business.3:19But if you discovered a strategy, and you know every single time you do, it adds five or 10%, you gotta do it every single time. Don't let those things die. Just because it's boring, So the latest strategies are wonderful to keep pushing, But once you find something that works, you gotta keep doing it. You can't drop that boring stuff.3:40Yeah, of course.3:4

We're going to talk about creating a recurring revenue machine like Seth alluded to that's going to be a lot of fun, right?And the reason why we want to talk about this today is because at the core, all of us consumers, humans in general are creatures of habit.And what I mean by that, Seth is that, you know, normally if we like a product, if we have a good experience with a vendor or with a store or any seller, we try to go back and patronize or purchase from the exact same people.And more specifically, Seth, I don't know about you. I'm assuming you're the same. Um, I like if I like a product, I want to buy the same product over and over again.And even if the product specifically, isn't something that I'm excited about, re repurchasing don't you like me, Seth, feel more comfortable buying from someone that you've already had a positive experience with that you already trust.You know, it's not going to cheat you. Um, you know, things like that. So what I want to talk about Seth with you today is how to make ourselves just a little easier to do business with.And what I mean is be front of mind, be top of mind with your buyers who already know, like, and trust you and as an Amazon seller.So it's hard for us to think like that. Yeah. We don't have to think like that a lot of times do John, um, I mean, just like what you said, I mean, the customer is choosing actively typically to make it easy on themselves.They want to buy things that they are comfortable with just like you and I buy the same protein powder. We talked about it before, but we just want to make it easy.So not only do we want to have a physical, recurring product, a business, but we actually are going to be telling you a little bit about how we turn Amazon businesses into higher margin businesses.Basically, if we can sell something to our existing customer that doesn't have any inventory costs, we can raise our margins significantly.So for instance, what would that be? You know, that would be something digital, some type of information, some type of membership, something that if I send it to you and you paid me, I don't have to pay for that incremental cost, which is what every Amazon seller struggles with.Because to grow your Amazon business, you have to have a lot of inventory to make a sale. So we're going to talk about today, how you can take your existing, physical product business and turn it into something that's a slightly better business model because we're tacking on these profits to the back end of each individual sale.What do you say about that, Shawn? Well, I was just thinking as I watching you wear long sleeves for the first time.Oh no, you got short sleeves on great show off them guns. Um, what happened right before we started this call today?I mean, what did I just send you in a Skype message 30 seconds ago says, what's the Referring you, you're referring me a product that, you know, I can do Exactly.And you know, as Amazon sellers, it's easy for us to sit around and say, well, you know, my product is not something someone would purchase more than once.Like this lapel mic that I'm wearing right here. Right? 0:04This is the post purchase PRO Podcast, episode seven when he told me that my business can be sold for 10 times, earnings or even more.0:13I almost choked, because I knew that meant our asking price will be well, over $100 million.0:21Welcome to Episode seven.0:23This is Shawn Hart, along with my trusty sidekick here mister Seth Stephens and this is the post purchase Pro podcast of course.0:31Now I've sold numerous businesses over my lifetime but every single time I do, I feel like all of a sudden I know why heroin addicts get addicted to smack.0:42I mean it's like a drug, but as soon as my business sells Seth, I immediately start looking for that next high.0:50And I always tell myself this will be better next time because I know what I did wrong. I know what I can do better, and so on. So, I immediately start looking for something else, and I'm sure you can relate the first time that we sold the business together. How did that make you feel, buddy?1:07Oh man, It's a great, great feeling, Shawn, but as you guys can probably guess what we're gonna be talking about the things that you need to do today to where when you sell your business in the future, You're gonna get the max payout. So pay attention, because we're gonna be going through several items that helped us over the years.1:27Really ramp up what we end up with at the end of the day. And, Shawn, you know that since 20 14, our entire business model has been structured around building these Amazon businesses to sell. We never intended to keep them. We literally built them to sell from the beginning. And we've sold several of them, both large and small.1:48And what we kind of figured out was, in the beginning, we just built something, that we thought, you know, somebody, you know, out there would, would buy, and we kinda cross our fingers and hope that everything would work out pretty well and it did work out, OK.2:03But what we've learned is, you know, we've gotten a lot smarter in the last seven years, and we've actually totally kind of revamp the way we approach business.2:12And now we come at it with, in a systematic way, We try to check all the boxes that buyers are looking for when they're going to buy a business. So, we systematically build our businesses for one thing.2:26We build it so a buyer will pay the most for it. So, that's exactly what we're going to be talking about today is the things that you can put in place in your business now.2:40Yeah, definitely.2:41So, as you said, Seth, there are certain things that you have to get right if you want to sell your business for maximum value.2:49But there are 10 items that you and I have noticed in every single acquisition that we've gone through, that you absolutely have to get right. If you want to have a gold mine. Now, recently, I was talking to a broker about selling one of my current businesses.3:05And you know, I was almost asking them Seth, I think you were on the call, I was asked Think it back. It was kinda funny, right?3:14I was almost being apologetic about now.3:16What do you think about if I do A, B, and C, And you know, this is a business that were built specifically to sell a course.3:23I said, do you think it will be unreasonable to ask for, if I can do this, this, and this, to ask for 10 times multiple, which would make that business worth about $60 million? Right?3:37Yes, yeah. six times, What did I say? Yeah, you said 10. Oh, sorry, 10 times. Yeah.3:42Well, because when he told me that my business could actually be sold for 10 times earnings, or even more I almost choked, because I knew that that men are asking price will be well over $100 million, The biggest business I ever sold and walked away with, it was about $11 million, but it was a $13 million deal.4:04So when t

First of all, my name is Shawn Hart of post-purchase pro.I grew up in a small town in central Indiana back in the nineties. So I'm a little bit long in the tooth, right?And it just so happens that my cohost, Mr. Seth Stevens is from the exact same small town, although we never knew each other growing up, it was destiny that our paths would cross at some points that say, hello.Hey everyone, thank you, Shawn. For the quick little intro there, as you said, I am Seth Stevens and we are so excited to be here, Shawn, both you and I have shared a lifelong passion for business and entrepreneurship, and that's what brought us together early on in my career.Um, you were a little bit more experienced, I'll say running a, a very successful business at the time, actually did a little stint in your marketing office and learned a ton.And then that brought us, you know, a decade later to this point where we're having a ton of fun, helping Amazon sellers maximize their profitability with post-purchase marketing.That's great, buddy. Thank you for calling me old in a nice way. So now you know who we are. Let's talk a little bit about history.So I cut my teeth starting my first business in high school, actually selling roses on the streets, not only in our little small town in central Indiana, but also at other points all around the Midwest and experienced lots of different style of business, sold different products through different platforms.But when I learned the true importance of what we call direct response marketing, finally, I was able to broadcast my message through specific advertising to the masses.And that's when I really blew up. And actually, when you were just fresh out of college, Seth, that's when you joined me with a brief tenor, my marketing company in Indianapolis as an intern, and kind of got your feet wet a little bit when it comes to direct response.Now, when I say direct response, if you're not familiar with the term, this is marketing or advertising that asked for a quote unquote direct response from the consumer.So what we were doing back in the days, if you want to call it that. So we were offering our own imported products, branded products directly to the end user using television ads, newspaper ads, direct mail, email, and the light.And when you're paying for space ads in the direct response industry, regardless of the platform being newspaper, print magazines, TV, radio, as a matter, every single ad is tracked down to what the actual response is from that ad.Now, the reason I'm telling you that is because when Seth and I jumped into the Amazon business, it was, it was the direct response exposure that I had had.And Seth had had previous before we started our Amazon business that we found out later had a very, very positiv
