Theme park in Arlington, Texas
POPULARITY
Republicans in the Legislature filed more than 80 bills that would affect LGBTQ Texans, including many focused on public schools that would impact students, teachers and staff. Sex education and gender identity are a particular focus. In other news, the parents of the child who died in Texas' measles outbreak told an anti-vaccine advocacy group that they still wouldn't recommend the vaccine for other families; when Cindy Clemishire publicly alleged last year that Robert Morris sexually abused her as a child, legal experts said they doubted the former Gateway Church senior pastor would face any criminal charges. That doubt was rooted in statute of limitations laws, which typically determine how long an alleged victim of child sexual abuse can wait before initiating legal action against the person who allegedly abused them; and summer is not too far away, and in North Texas that might mean a trip to Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington. However, there are some new park policies to be aware of before you go. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Coaster Nerd Con, or CNC23, took place from July 6-14, 2023. This is the annual trek where Matt and two friends take an epic journey to ride roller coasters, debate the best park food and experience the best the industry has to offer. This year, Josh got to join them at their first park, Six Flags Great America. From there, the trio went to Lost Island Theme Park, Adventureland, Worlds of Fun, Silver Dollar City, Frontier City, Six Flags Over Texas, SeaWorld San Antonio, and Six Flags Fiesta Texas. As usual, there were lessons learned along the way. In this episode, Matt and Josh talk about the “things that matter” to the park-going experience. Enthusiasm matters For those who know Jeffrey Siebert, Park President at Six Flags Fiesta Texas, you know that he has enthusiasm to spare. In fact, he calls himself an “enthusiast who gets to run a theme park,” and that enthusiasm shows from the look of the park (amazing), the interactions with the team (hospitable and friendly), and the fact that everything was open. His energy is infectious, and that has an incredibly positive impact on the entire operation. We also ran into team members at other parks, such as Lost Island, who leveled up their own enthusiasm. The gentleman who greeted us for the dark ride and the chef who checked on us as we ate lunch both positively enhanced our experience because of their enthusiasm and positive demeanor. Recognition matters There are so many ways to recognize a team member and so many great accomplishments to recognize them for! As we learned from Tony and Gina Claassen, there is something that Silver Dollar City does that combines recognition with a way to immortalize loyal team members. Disney has the windows on Main Street, and Silver Dollar City has customized, themed posters that are placed throughout the park that recognize team members that have been with the company for 25 years. The best part is that Gina and Tony got to help design their posters and had a choice of where to put them. Next time you're at SDC, see if you can find them! Environment matters The look, the feel, the emotion, the smells, the music… it all plays into the environment you are stepping into and will be the foundation of an immersive experience. Worlds of Fun has done considerable retheming and upgrades to the park, including paint and new facades. Lost Island was clean, incredibly well-themed, and paid attention to the little details that really made a difference. Props must also be given to the Bamboozler (Round-Up) at Worlds of Fun. The internal paint job (which one could argue wasn't needed for the ride to function) created a visually interesting and attractive experience not just for the riders but the guests on the midway as well. History matters Many rides and attractions have had lives before landing in their current home. Parks also move things all the time to accommodate expansion and new experiences. It truly enhances the experience when a park takes the time to acknowledge and document the journey that a ride has taken to get to its current home. A notable piece of history for Matt is the Grand Carousel at Worlds of Fun, which used to be at Geauga Lake in Aurora, OH. Geauga Lake was Matt's home park growing up, and there is a very good chance he rode it when he visited with his family. Sharing the history can develop and strengthen the emotional connection of the experience. Activities matter As much as the CNC crew loves roller coasters, it was really fun to discover, observe and participate in a variety of activities that bring people together and let them have fun or challenge themselves in a non-traditional way (for a theme park). Lost Island had a number of activities that allowed guests to challenge their minds as well as their body. Silver Dollar City staged a good ‘ol fashioned water balloon fight, and Fiesta Texas has a state-of-the-art gaming center. For more on the CNC23 trip, look for #CNC23 on Facebook and Instagram. Ron McKenzie is an attractions industry veteran who was most recently the Park President of Six Flags Over Texas. Ron has a wealth of experience both leading attractions teams and marketing and selling the fun that we produce. In this episode, Ron shares many of the great stories from his career, discusses effective communication, and pulls back the curtain on some of his favorite marketing stunts. Theme park stories "I was handed a phone book, and told, go sell something." Ron started with Fiesta Texas (before Six Flags took over) in 1993. New to group sales in a theme park, Ron admits he didn't know what he was selling, but it was great to be in waiting rooms with others who were selling copy machines, etc., because he knew that his product was so much more fun. Ron has so many great stories about his time in the industry, and he is happy to share them! So many people talk about creating stories that guests get to experience, but we may forget the stories that happen to us as we are creating those memories and special times for others. Those are really important stories, too. Effective communication "Leadership is all about effective communication, trust, and getting people to believe in what you are trying to accomplish." Sometimes the best ideas grow out of necessity or a whim. Ron shares that during the hectic days of re-opening that he would stop by the employee cafeteria for a bite to eat and would sit outside. He had no idea that the team members would respond so positively by taking the time to talk to him, share what they loved about their jobs and where they wanted to go in life. The time to interact with team members became Ron's favorite time in the park. There were times that he couldn't finish a meal because so many people were talking with him, but he felt, as a leader, that's exactly where he was supposed to be. Communicating, listening, and sometimes even giving people a little nudge to keep moving forward. Marketing stunts “At that point in my career I knew a lot, but did not know how to pull off a guy jumping 26 cars in our parking lot.” Of all of the significant marketing initiatives and experiences Ron has had, he shared that one of his greatest highlights was working with Robbie Knievel as he attempted to jump 26 Dodge Chargers in the Six Flags St. Louis parking lot to announce the opening of their new wooden coaster. Ron shares that one of the best things about working with Robbie was that he got to learn so much more about Robbie's dad, Evel Knievel, who was someone Ron looked up to as a kid. This also led to an unfortunate picture of Ron and Robbie that made it into the local paper! To connect with Ron, you can find him on LinkedIn. The Orleans Waterfront Inn lies between Town Cove and Route 28 in Orleans, Massachusetts. This had been the home of a sea captain whose family had strong ties to Orleans and whose ancestors were pilgrims. The original building has been here for over 100 years and was said to be a favorite haunt of the Irish Mafia where they ran whiskey. This was reputedly a brothel for a time as well, where a lady of the evening lost her life. The inn was the scene of two suicides. Perhaps because of this history, the inn is reputedly haunted. Not far from Orleans is the town of Brewster. There are several haunted locations in this town from the Crosby Mansion to the Bramble Inn and Restaurant to the Captain Freeman Perry House. Join us as we explore the history and hauntings of the Orleans Waterfront Inn and the town of Brewster. Imagine if you had a chance to sit down and talk with Walt Disney when he started to brainstorm about an idea called "Mickey Mouse Park." What if you could go back to 1959 and have lunch with Angus Wynne Jr. to hear his ideas about a park that would eventually become "Six Flags Over Texas." Building a theme park from scratch is no easy accomplishment. It takes hard work, a solid business plan and most importantly... a vision. On this week's show, we welcome a man with a unique vision of his own. He wants to see a theme park built in his home town of Nashville, Tennessee. This week, David Webb joins us to talk about his plans for "Ole South USA". It would be a theme park celebrating everything that is vibrant and special about the southern region of the United States. David gives us a "virtual tour" of the different themed lands, including descriptions of some of their innovative rides and attractions. He also talks about the steps being taken to make this dream a reality. Most importantly, he fills us in on the Pioneer Club, which gives 3,500 people a chance to take part in the birth of this theme park. We also have an update on the Valentine's Day Charity Song Auction and we announce the first CoasterRadio.com Listener Meet-up of 2012. California, HERE WE COME!

When I'm putting together these blog posts, I always try to find an interesting photo to make you want to listen to the show. This week, I present you with a picture Hugh Grant. Listen to the show to figure out why he's relevant! This week, the Coaster Radio audience steps up to the mike and tells us about what they believe are the most underrated roller coasters in the world. We're talking about roller coasters that don't get any love from The Travel Channel, magazines and even from us here at the show. You'll be pleasantly surprised at some of the suggestions listeners came up with! We'll also have a Live Trip Report from Six Flags Over Texas and an update on Theme Park Change! Keep in mind, there is only one week left to donate! We still need a lot of help to reach our goal. So, if you haven't donated yet, don't wait! To get you inspired to donate, we'll have a visit from a brand new friend! (You won't want to miss this!)
Mike Collins is in a stage version of "It's a Wonderful Life" that opens this weekend. So, Mike and EB had to tape the show really late at night after one of the rehearsals. This means that this week's show is a caffeine-fueled trip that includes a lot of good theme park talk and a lot of imitations from "It's a Wonderful Life" too! The guys talk about the listener's most "elusive roller coasters," the type of attractions that people have always wanted to ride, but for whatever reason have never been able to visit. They'll also hear a live trip report from Six Flags Over Texas and get into a discussion about the refurbishment of the Texas Giant. They'll also talk about new gimmicks on roller coasters, such as heart rate monitors. There's also an update on The Neil Patrick Harris Project! The Tower of Treats has been deployed!
