It's a message, screaming from the manger, that Christ came into the world not to be served, but to serve others—all others. This message of Good News had no limits. It was a message of service to everyone. Christ came to serve you and to serve me. This Message From The Manger is a message of sovereignty. Sovereignty means supreme power or authority. In theological terms, it refers to God's absolute authority and control over all creation. God is never out of control, lacking control, or needing to take control. At all times – and through all things – God has ultimate power and authority over everything that happens. God is in control! There is no formula to make the Sabbath work for you, but there is a framework that leads to success. While there is an abundance of historical, psychological, physical, and even scientific and medical evidence of the benefits of taking one day off each week to completely rest, the vast majority of people—especially in our modern Western world—fight against this rhythm that God rooted into creation. We're like three-year-olds fighting a nap—knowing we're exhausted but refusing to accept God's pathway to rest. Maybe one of the biggest reasons we fight against it—especially as followers of Jesus—is that we don't truly understand the "why" behind Sabbath rest. And that's what we will reframe in this message, week two of our series, Reframing Rest.Click here for Jeff's Message Notes.Click here for Small Group Discussion Questions.________________________________________________________________________Subscribe so you don't miss a thing!Christian Copyright Solutions (CCS, BMI, ASCAP, SESAC)License: #14753Find us on:YouTube: YouTube.com/TheHarborInstagram: Instagram.com/TheHarbor_lifeFacebook: Facebook.com/TheHarbordotlifeWebsite: https://www.TheHarbor.lifeWatch/listen on The Harbor AppNew episode every week!
60% of U.S. adults say they feel more tired now than they've ever been. --- OnePoll Research Firm58% of people said that feeling tired keeps them from enjoying life, and 33% of people "always" or "often" still feel tired even after a good night's sleep. --- Talker Research FirmWhy is this happening? Why do we wear busyness as a badge of honor - yet constantly talk about how much we need a break - and how tired we are – even though it's keeping us from enjoying life? And when we do get a break - a vacation, an extended weekend, or just a good night's sleep – we're not receiving the rest we truly need to be filled back up. We're not living in the rhythm of rest that God intended.Could it be that we need to reframe rest? That maybe there is a rest God wants us to have and to live in that we are missing out on in our busy, hurried, fast-paced, and tired lives? In this message, Pastor Jeff Maness explains that the Sabbath is more than a specific day you must observe, it is a way of life you get to practice, a gift from God.Click here for Jeff's Message Notes.Click here for Small Group Discussion Questions.________________________________________________________________________Subscribe so you don't miss a thing!Christian Copyright Solutions (CCS, BMI, ASCAP, SESAC)License: #14753Find us on:YouTube: YouTube.com/TheHarborInstagram: Instagram.com/TheHarbor_lifeFacebook: Facebook.com/TheHarbordotlifeWebsite: https://www.TheHarbor.lifeWatch/listen on The Harbor AppNew episode every week!

Serving Matters - Followers of Jesus should serve in areas that use their God-given gifts to strengthen and build up the Church and others. To follow Christ is to live a life of serving, because serving matters. Bold Faith - Healthy followers of Jesus boldly live out their faith with passion and conviction, marked by grace and truth. We have read stories in the Bible about the early Christians living out their faith in Christ, even when they were threatened with death if they didn't stop talking about Jesus. We've seen video about modern day Christians in other areas of the world who are beaten and killed for their faith. But it's one thing to see others have bold faith, it is quite another to live it out yourself. Core Value #2 - Come As You Are: God wants every person to come as they are to Him and His Church, where they can find forgiveness, eternal life, and life to the full through Jesus.God wants us to come as we are, but He loves us too much to leave us that way. Just because God receives us as we are does not mean there isn't a standard that He calls us to live out. "Come As You Are" is not an excuse to stay who have been. It's also not an excuse to reject people who are not living up to it, because God loves everyone unconditionally, as should we. Watch to see how if we believe in the right things but respond to people in the wrong way, then what we believe won't matter.Jeff's Message Notes are here.Small Group Discussion Questions are here.To see the full list of The Harbor's Core Values, please click here.________________________________________________________________________Subscribe so you don't miss a thing!Christian Copyright Solutions (CCS, BMI, ASCAP, SESAC)License: #14753Find us on:YouTube: YouTube.com/TheHarborInstagram: Instagram.com/TheHarbor_lifeFacebook: Facebook.com/TheHarbordotlifeWebsite: https://www.TheHarbor.lifeWatch/listen on The Harbor AppNew episode every week!
Core Value #1 - Prayer is Our Priority: The work of the Church is first and foremost prayer, by which all other work is led, empowered, and supported. There is no such thing as a healthy, thriving, Christ following, God honoring church, if that church is not focused on and driven by prayer. This is why prayer is our first Core Value at The Harbor. Why is prayer so important? People may not say it to us, but they are evaluating whether our faith is genuine by watching how we live our lives. The only way they can truly tell if our faith is real is not by our words, because words can be empty, but by our actions. If we truly believe that what we say we believe is really real, then our lives will reflect it. So the question is, are we living a life that is worthy of the Gospel?Ryan's Message Notes are here.Small Group Discussion Questions are here.As a resource to print out, we'd like to offer "10 Signs of a Politically Undivided Heart." In God's Word, we are commanded to pray for all people, no matter if we like them, or disagree with them, or what. All people, especially those in authority over us: our local police, the mayor, the governor, and the President of the United States, whether you voted for them or not. In part 2 of the message entitled The Prayer of Jesus, Senior Pastor Jeff Maness tells us about "The #1 Prayer of Jesus". In part 1, we learned that hours before His excruciating death on the cross, at a time when every word counted, Jesus prayed for the protection, purity (holiness), and purpose of those who were following Him and anyone who would ever follow Him. In the last message we learned that "God is Everything". Everything that God has done and is doing today and all that He will do in the future is because of His great love. What comes to mind when you think of God? In this first message of the He Is/We Are series, Senior Pastor Jeff Maness explores what it means when we say that God is holy. The power of Jesus is best revealed in the problems we face. In the midst of our problems we should be asking God to provide a miracle for us - to reveal His power through provision. When we fail at something or let someone down, we often feel deep regret or like we, ourselves, are a failure. But making a mistake doesn't make you a failure, and it doesn't keep God from loving you or using you. In this Easter message, Senior Pastor Jeff Maness tells how Peter's denial of Jesus was Peter's greatest failure, but Jesus wasn't done with Peter, and he's not done with you yet either. Connection with Jesus allows us to accomplish what we could not on our own. Whatever doesn't come naturally, can come supernaturally when we're connected to the Vine.Small Group Discussion Questions:-What is a natural talent or ability that you have? Something that you could almost do with your eyes closed?-What is something that you know you need to do, but just does not come naturally for you? Pastor shared an example of how commercial growers will often graft a young branch into a mature grape vine. This allows the new branch to take on the characteristics, flavor, and even disease resistance of the mature vine. -As sinners saved by grace, you could say we are all new branches grafted into the Vine. If we are trying to love and serve the Lord, and interested in growing in holiness, we always want to make sure to make decisions according to the will of God. However, it is not always easy for us to make decisions. We can be tempted to become anxious and fearful when faced with making an important decision. In this episode Kara and Fred share some thoughts from the treasury of the Church's teaching as well as their own experience in striving to follow the will of God in their own lives. Small Group Discussion Questions: What is your current process of discerning the Lord's will for your life? In what ways has it worked for you? What is one thing you learned about yourself through your journey of discernment? What is one way your relationship with the Lord changed/grew/struggled in moments of decision-making? Look back on an important decision in your life. How can you see connections to that choice and how God worked in it to bring you here? How might things be different had you chosen the different path? How did Christ draw you closer to him through this episode? St Ignatius of Loyola's key to making a good decision: “To make a good choice our intentions ought to be simple: only looking at what we were created for; namely the praise of God, our Lord, and the salvation of our souls. So, I ought to choose, in whatever I may do, that which may help me fulfill that end for which I am created.” Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 1: "God, infinitely perfect and blessed in himself, in a plan of sheer goodness freely created man to make him share in his own blessed life. For this reason, at every time and in every place, God draws close to man. He calls man to seek him, to know him, to love him with all his strength. He calls together all men, scattered and divided by sin, into the unity of his family, the Church. To accomplish this, when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son as Redeemer and Savior. In his Son and through him, he invites men to become, in the Holy Spirit, his adopted children and thus heirs of his blessed life." Recommended questions to consider when making decisions, especially those of greater importance: “How am I called to serve God?” “How am I to most fully, and faithfully, live according to my state in life?” “What does it look like for me to know him, love him, and serve him in my daily life?” “How does this help me get to heaven?” “How does it help to get others to heaven?” Past Episodes Mentioned in the Show: Four People You Need in Your Life: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/4-people-you-need-in-your-life/id1536166779?i=1000507731144 Why Are You Catholic?: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/why-are-you-catholic/id1536166779?i=1000501933075 The Invisible World – Spiritual Warfare: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-invisible-world-spiritual-warfare/id1536166779?i=1000496584028 The Invisible World – Angels Part 2: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-invisible-world-angels-part-2/id1536166779?i=1000495880373 Recommended Reading from This Episode: The Great Divorce by C.S. In this Ash Wednesday episode, we explore the "why" behind our Lenten sacrifices and devotion; as well as some tips on dealing with discouragement during Lent. We also offer some tips and suggestions from our own experience, on how to draw near to Christ during Lent. Lent is a time in which God provides us an opportunity to say, like Peter, “Yes, Lord, I love you more than these.” To put our focus on what matters most and to encounter him in a deeper way. An encounter with Christ that will help to set us on the right path, to think like him, to love like him. Small Group Discussion Questions: Why would you intentionally enter into moments of sacrifice in life? How does making sacrifices in your own life relate to the life of Christ? How can we grow in understanding Jesus better by uniting our sacrifices to his? Think of past Lenten sacrifices. What was something you gave up? What was your intention behind giving that up? Did it bring you closer to Christ? How did Christ draw you closer to him through this episode? We are made for relationships... and yet it seems so hard to find those intimate Catholic friendships. You know... the kind where you don't have to pretend to have it all together. The kind where you feel guided, supported, and loved! The friendships where at different times you are being led and then leading and then walking side by side through life. Listen to this episode to hear the 4 roles we need in our lives when it comes to friendships. What does it mean to have a Paul? A Timothy? Barnabas and Silas? by Denny Mashburn June 16, 2019 cd19.06.16 SCRIPTURE READING “(24) A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. (25) It is enough for a disciple that he be like his teacher, and a servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more will they call those of his household!...(34) Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. (35) For I have come to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’; (36) and ‘a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’ (37) He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.” Matt.10:24-25, 34-37 (NKJV) “ (24) A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. (25) It is enough for a disciple that he be like his teacher, and a servant like his master.” Matt.10:24-25 DISCIPLESHIP, HAVING CHRIST AS MY MASTER, IS THE KEY TO BEING A GOOD FATHER: 1. because a disciple of Christ learns to THINK LIKE CHRIST! “Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword.” Matt.10:34 THE PARADOX OF PEACE AND WAR: A. Prince of peace: “..and His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace…” Isa.9:6b B. Peace with God: “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Rom.5:1 C. Gospel of peace: “and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace.” Eph.6:15 D. Peace among the nations: “....Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end…” Isa.9:7 E. War in the family: “(51) Do you suppose that I came to give peace on earth? I tell you, not at all, but rather division. (52) For from now on five in one house will be divided: three against two, and two against three. (53) Father will be divided against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.” Lk.12:51-53 2. because a disciple of Christ anticipates and is willing to endure STRAINED FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS! “(35) For I have come to ‘set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’; (36) and ‘a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’ Matt.10:35-36 3. because a disciple of Christ is TOTALLY SURRENDERED! “He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.” Matt.10:37 “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple.” Lk.14:26 a. the love of riches (inheritance): “(59) Then He said to another, ‘Follow Me.’ But he said, ‘Lord, let me first go and bury my father.’ (60) Jesus said to him, ‘Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and preach the kingdom of God.” Lk.9:59-60 b. the love of family: “(61) And another also said, ‘Lord, I will follow You, but let me first go and bid them farewell who are at my house.’ (62) But Jesus said to him, ‘No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.” Lk.9:61-62 “The parting with my wife and poor children hath often been to me in this place as the pulling of the flesh from my bones; and that not only because I am somewhat too fond of these great mercies, but also because I would have often brought to my mind the many hardships, miseries, and wants that my poor family was like to meet with, should I be taken from them, especially my poor blind child, who lay nearer my heart than all I have besides. Oh, the thought of the hardship I thought my blind one might go under would break my heart to pieces…But yet, recalling myself, thought I, I must venture all with God though it goeth to the quick to leave you. Oh, I saw in this condition, I was a man who was pulling down his house upon the head of his wife and children, yet I thought I, must do it. I must do it.” John Bunyan SO WHAT? 1. Being a disciple of Jesus Christ requires unconditional surrender! “So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.” Lk.14:33 “You call me Master and obey me not, you call me Light and see me not, you call me the Way and follow me not, you call me Life and desire me not, you call me Wise and acknowledge me not, you call me Fair and love me not, you call me Rich and ask me not, you call me Eternal and seek me not, you call me Gracious and trust me not, you call me Noble and serve me not, you call me Mighty and honor me not, you call me Just and fear me not, if I condemn you, blame me not.” Author Unknown 2. If I am facing family conflicts, and it’s because of my shortcomings, make sure my ways are pleasing to the Lord! “When a man’s ways please the LORD, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.” Prov.16:7 3. If I am facing family conflicts, and it is because of my loyalty to Christ, adjust my expectations and rejoice! “Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.” 2Tim.3:12 “(11) Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. (12) Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” Matt.5:11-12 4. Cultivate a daily surrendered life to Christ! “Then He said to them all, ‘If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.” Lk.9:23 “God is ready to assume full responsibility for the life wholly yielded to Him.” Andrew Murray SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: • The theme of this message is a call to discipleship, especially to fathers on father’s day! 1. What is the best memory you have of your father? Was my father a disciple of Christ? What would I say is the key to being a good father? 2. Read (Matt.10:24-42). What do I notice about the Lord’s definition of what it means to be His disciple? Does He require unconditional surrender? Have I made that commitment? Has it made a difference in my life? In my family? 3. Take note of (vs.34-37). Does commitment to the Lordship of Christ always bring peace to a home and family? Look up these verses on peace and conflict associated with following Christ: a. (Isa.9:6) The Prince of Peace b. (Isa.9:7) Peace on earth one day c. (Rom.5:1) Peace with God d. (Jn.14:27; Phil.4:7) Peace of God e. (Matt.5:9) Blessed are the peacemakers f. (Lk.12:51-53) Cost of discipleship, possible division in the home 4. If I am facing conflicts in my family, what does (Pr.16:7) promise me? This verse addresses enemies I have made, but if my family conflicts are because I am following Christ, what does (Matt.5:11-12) tell me I need to do? Why? 5. What does (Matt.10:24-42; Rom.10:9, and Eph.5:18) all have in common? Could it be surrender? What happens when a father (or any Christian) surrenders to Christ on a daily basis? Does it affect how he treats his wife, children, his job, etc.? How does one cultivate a surrendered life after salvation? (see Col.3:16, Matt.26:41) DAILY BIBLE READING Mon (Matt.10:24-42) The marks of discipleship Tue (Lk.14:25-33) More marks of discipleship Wed (Lk.12:49-53) The cost of discipleship Thu (Lk.9:23-26) The cost of discipleship Fri (Rom.5:1) The promise of peace with God
