Wouldn’t it be great if when someone purchased a new book, a tree was planted in exchange? Wouldn’t it be great, if when someone purchased a new plasma TV, someone without vision got the gift of sight? Paul is often referred to as a wise mentor and has helped countless individuals improve their business operations. He is an expert at building up those around him and celebrating every achievement, no matter how small. Paul is a member of one of the world’s leading think-tanks and was recently honored with a Lifetime Service Award to the Accounting Profession in the UK (though he’s definitely NOT an accountant!). More recently, he was named as a Social Innovation Fellow in his new home of Singapore - an honour he shares with film-star Jet Li and Wal-Mart Chairman, Rob Walton. His work as Chairman of the revolutionary B1G1 (Buy One Give One) has been featured in leading-edge publications such as Forbes, Fast Company, Trendwatching, Springwise and online through the key technology newsletter Mashable, as well as Voice of America. Already, B1G1 has created over 117 million giving impacts around the world by allowing businesses to enjoy real purpose and meaning through giving. In this episode you’ll learn… Why 7 out of 10 people actually feel bad about the word ‘charity’ because they have had a bad experience, and why B1G1 is offering something very different to traditional charities The importance of ‘connection’ and why this is central to having meaning and purpose in our lives How a Jim Rohn Seminar back in 1980 impacted Paul so greatly and inspired him to go on to become a great speaker himself The process Paul uses to prepare himself before he goes on stage to address a large audience That a person’s ‘why’ can change, and you should focus on your why ‘for now’ The story Paul shares about Daniel Priestley’s Father which illustrates how the way we show up to our businesses must be the same as we show up for our own health How the United Nations Global Goals emphasised the impact that Entrepreneurs, rather than Governments, are the ones that are best positioned to really make a positive impact in the world The importance of learning how to ‘ship’ - just getting your ideas out there is the only way to receive real feedback Quotes: ‘We often think that when we give, it is the recipients that are the beneficiaries. The reality is that we are the beneficiaries by being allowed to do that’ - Paul Dunn, on behalf of Jessica. ‘Some people are going round and round on the rat wheel with no meaning and purpose’ Links & Resources mentioned in this episode: B1G1 - Business For Giving Jim Rohn - Personal Development & Business Philosopher Richard Branson - Don’t Look Down (Documentary, Netflix) Seth Godin Blog Guest Details: Paul Dunn Official Website Connect with Escape The Rat Race...within 12 months: Official Website Private Facebook Group Thanks for listening! Why in this decade alone, entrepreneurs will create more wealth for themselves and for society than in the whole of the twentieth century What definition that paul applies to a Social Entrepreneur, and why these are the big changemakers for good (rather than the governments) in the world today The simple process for finding your ‘why’ that Paul learned from Simon Sinek, Author of ‘Start With Why’ The global movement of entrepreneurship in young people and the education system is beginning to change Why studies show that 7 out of 10 people feel uneasy about the word ‘charity’ because they have had a bad experience Quotes: ‘People should never doubt that tiny things can make amazing differences’ Links & Resources mentioned in this episode: B1G1 - Business For Giving Green School Bali Nalu Clothing Adam Houlahan on Linkedin Guest Details: Paul Dunn Official Website Connect with Escape The Rat Race...within 12 months: Official Website Private Facebook Group Thanks for listening! This time, Nora Young and Cathi Bond are talking shopping. Cathi Bond looks at this profile of retail design company, The Science Project. It seems to take a page from user experience design to create a shopping experience that's data-driven, supported by digital, and very flexible. Nora mentions Frank and Oak's approach to offering a number of experiences in-store besides shopping. Meanwhile, Nora talks about a convenience store in the isolated Swedish town of Viken, which is unstaffed (via Springwise). It operates through a combination of an app which unlocks the door, monthly billing and trust (plus security measures!). Nora and Cathi chat about the trust economy.
Nora Young talks about Virool, a new online ad platform that, with your permission, will use your computer's camera to monitor your reactions to the ads you watch (via Springwise). It's an example, she says, of the increasing trend towards tech that monitors our moods and reactions. See, for example, this story or this one on her show Spark. Cathi Bond, talks about the DARPA Robotics Challenge coming up in June, and in particular, the Atlas robot (via Gizmodo). Nora mentions David McCandless' infographic about online music services and artists' compensation (via The Guardian)
Long-time listeners will know that Cathi Bond has an, ummm, interest? fixation? with tiny, well-designed housing, especially if it's mobile! She's particularly intrigued by Leaf House, a company that designs and builds elegant, tiny, organized mobile homes. You can find version 3 here, which features 'quad pane' windows, designed to make the home comfortable even in Arctic temperatures. You can see images here. Meanwhile, Nora Young talks about Zoolafix, which aims to connect travelers to London or New York with a local 'fixer', based on shared common interests in nightlife. Your 'fixer' does things like line up for drinks and getting you into nightclubs (via Springwise). It's a good example of the ongoing trend in matching up people and services in different cities. Would you use it?
