Someone asks you for something. The word no forms in your head. What comes out of your mouth is yes. In this episode, Dr. Aziz breaks down why just say no more never quite works. There's a specific pattern running underneath the guilt and the override, and the standard get better boundaries advice doesn't reach the layer where it lives. He also names the pattern he himself runs when he takes his own quiz: the Fixer. This episode covers: Why the trap of saying no makes both yes and no feel terrible The Fixer pattern (one of the four ways your nervous system tries to keep you safe when disapproval is on the table) and the two levels of fixing most Fixers don't realize they're doing A story Dr. Aziz tells on himself about a Thursday night that should have been a no The saying he uses with every client about why recalibration always feels wrong before it feels right Discover your approval type. On this episode of The Video Store Podcast, I am recommending four movies about the people who get called when somebody has made a mess, crossed the wrong person, or needs a situation to go away quietly. The movies this week are Sweet Smell of Success (1957), Wise Guys (1986), La Femme Nikita (1990), and Pulp Fiction (1994). They all deal with that idea in different ways, from a press agent trying to stay useful, to mob errand boys trying to stay alive, to handlers working inside a government machine, to a man who arrives with a plan when everyone else is panicking.I start with Sweet Smell of Success (1957), which may be the coldest movie on this list. Tony Curtis plays Sidney Falco, a press agent who is always working an angle and always trying to stay useful to Burt Lancaster's J. J. Hunsecker. Hunsecker has the power, but Falco is the fixer. He is the one moving through restaurants, clubs, offices, and sidewalks trying to make things happen for people who would rather not get their own hands dirty. The film was directed by Alexander Mackendrick, with cinematography by James Wong Howe and music by Elmer Bernstein. It was shot partly on the streets of New York, and it still feels like a movie made out of cigarette smoke, bad favors, and late night anxiety. Then I move to Wise Guys (1986), a Brian De Palma comedy that feels a little odd in his filmography, which is part of what makes it interesting. Danny DeVito and Joe Piscopo play low level mob guys who are useful until they are not. They run errands, take orders, and try to read the room, but the room keeps changing on them. Harvey Keitel, Dan Hedaya, Ray Sharkey, Frank Vincent, and Captain Lou Albano are all in the cast, which gives the movie a nice mix of mob movie faces and broad comedy. It is not De Palma in thriller mode, but you can still see his interest in people trapped inside systems they do not fully control. The third recommendation is La Femme Nikita (1990), Luc Besson's French action thriller about a young woman pulled into a government program that turns her into an assassin. The fixer here is not only one person. It is the whole structure around her. Tchéky Karyo's Bob is part handler and part threat, someone who can seem kind while reminding Nikita that her new life is not really hers. Jeanne Moreau also appears as Amande, who helps shape Nikita into someone who can move through polite society while carrying a completely different life underneath. Anne Parillaud won the César Award for Best Actress for the role, and you can see why. She has to play the violence, the fear, and the strange sadness of someone being rebuilt for other people's purposes. The last movie is Pulp Fiction (1994), where Harvey Keitel's Winston Wolf may be the cleanest example of this week's theme. He arrives, assesses the problem, gives instructions, and leaves before the movie can turn him into something bigger. That is part of why the character works so well. He does not need a long backstory. He is there because somebody called the right number. The movie is full of people talking themselves into and out of danger, but Mr. Wolf is different. He does not talk around the problem. He handles it.So this week, the shelf has a bitter New York classic, an oddball mob comedy, a French thriller, and one of the defining crime films of the 1990s. Four very different rentals, all built around people who know what to do when the situation has gone bad. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! We'd love to hear from you! Send us a text! Many moms are natural born FIXERS and we want to help ease any burdens our children face. But is that what our children really need from us? Elizabeth sits down (for part 2 of a 3 part series) with Kim Anderson, certified therapist, coach, author and speaker who boldly shares that most of what we do in hard moments is about OUR discomfort, not our children's! And that what they need from us is not perfection, but our steady presence. She unpacks how our nervous system is what sets the temperature in the room and how important it is to understand that a dysregulated mom, cannot regulate a dysregulated child. If you have ever wanted to bulldoze the rocky path for your child, then this episode is for you! You may find Kim at elevatemoms.com Elizabeth Pehrson created The Exchange in 2015. In this episode of Adulting with Autism, April sits down with Leah Marone — psychotherapist, speaker, and author of Serial Fixer: Break Free from the Habit of Solving Other People's Problems — to unpack why autistic and neurodivergent adults are often vulnerable to people-pleasing, masking, over-accommodating, and chronic burnout. Leah explains how "fixer mode" can start in childhood as a trauma response or learned pattern tied to love, praise, and survival — and how it becomes an exhausting loop of false ownership, hypervigilance, and anxiety. In this conversation, we cover: What it really means to be a "serial fixer" and how to recognize the pattern Why high emotional intelligence can become premature problem-solving How anxiety pulls us into the past (rumination) or future (worst-case planning) The connection between masking, people-pleasing, and losing your authentic self How to set boundaries without collapsing into guilt or conflict avoidance Why recovery matters for autistic adults navigating overstimulation and social decoding Micro-regulation tools for anxiety (cold on the chest, breath, movement, blood flow shifts) How caregivers can support neurodivergent young adults without "over-solving" Practical strategies for boundaries and burnout prevention in the workplace This episode is especially helpful for autistic adults, ADHDers, late-diagnosed individuals, caregivers, and high-achievers who feel stuck in overfunctioning and want to find their own version of calm, balance, and "enoughness." Hollywood fixers are the shadowy operatives who ensure that the dark secrets of the rich and famous stay buried. From the Golden Era of Hollywood to the present day, fixers have used a combination of threats, bribes, and strategic alliances with law enforcement and the media to manipulate stories and protect the images of the stars. Figures like Eddie Mannix, Anthony Pellicano, and more recently Faheem Muhammad, have played crucial roles in managing scandals, orchestrating cover-ups, and maintaining the glamour of Hollywood. These fixers often work behind the scenes, silencing victims, negotiating settlements, and leveraging connections to keep their clients untouchable. Their methods have evolved over the decades, from outright coercion and cover-ups to sophisticated crisis management strategies in the age of social media..Despite a more transparent culture and the rapid spread of information, the role of the fixer in Hollywood remains indispensable. High-profile individuals still require damage control to protect their image and careers, and modern fixers employ a mix of old-school intimidation tactics and new-age social media manipulation to get the job done. The allure of fame and power means that for every scandal that surfaces, there are countless others that remain hidden due to the invisible hands of fixers. Hollywood's silver curtain remains firmly drawn, hiding the darkness that lies beneath the glamorous facade, with fixers continuing to operate in the shadows to keep it that way.(commercial at 8:52)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-epstein-chronicles--5003294/support.

Welcome to PsychEd, the psychiatry podcast for medical learners, by medical learners. This is our inaugural book club episode centered around the novel Mind Fixers by Anne Harrington.Mind Fixers is by the Harvard historian Anne Harrington, and came out from Norton in 2022. It reframes the “biological turn” in later twentieth century psychiatry with a history of the discipline from the later nineteenth century forward. Harrington argues that the biological turn had relatively little to do with new scientific advances, and came instead from a need to separate psychiatry from the increasingly unpopular public image of the discipline's previous, “Freudian” age. To make this argument, she starts with the anatomic research of turn-of-the-century figures like Kraepelin, and how this generally failed to explain important mental illnesses. She traces the emergence of “Freudian” or psychological approaches to mental illness to the high point of their dominance in the mid twentieth century, and then their decline, as their inadequacy with respect to things like bipolar disorder and schizophrenia became increasingly clear, and their emphasis on childhood experience stigmatized families. Biological psychiatry is then a way to restore the fields's respectability as as branch of medicine, but according to Harrington, there is not much transformative innovation to go along with this rebrand; and she emphasizes that the psychopharmacology revolution which gave us the first antipsychotics, MAOIS, tricyclics, and the receptor model of mental illness, actually happened during the heyday of psychoanalysis. The members of our team involved in this discussion are:Sara Abrahamson - MS2 at the University of TorontoDr. Kate Braithwaite - Medical Doctor from South AfricaDr. Wendy MacMillan-Wang - PGY4 psychiatry resident at the University of ManitobaDr. Alastair Morrison - PGY1 psychiatry resident at McMaster UniversityDr. Gaurav Sharma - Staff psychiatrist working in Nunavut, CanadaThis episode was edited by Dr. Angad Singh - PGY1 psychiatry resident at the University of Toronto Our discussion was structured around four themes:(03:15) - Psychiatry and Economic Incentives(19:33) - Psychiatry and Parenting(28:40) - Biological Psychiatry and its Alternatives(52:05) - Psychiatry and Social ControlIf you enjoyed this episode, consider listening to our episodes about:History of Psychiatry with Dr. David CastleCritical Psychiatry with Dr. Elia Abi-Jaoude and Lucy CostaFor more PsychEd, follow us on Instagram (@psyched.podcast), X (@psychedpodcast), and Facebook (PsychEd Podcast). Sean "Diddy" Combs' legal team is currently engaged in a battle to prevent the use of a video showing him assaulting his ex-girlfriend, Cassie Ventura, from being used as evidence in his upcoming trial. The video, reportedly from a 2016 incident at a hotel, surfaced publicly through CNN in May 2024. Diddy's lawyers argue that the government, specifically the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), unlawfully leaked the footage to tarnish his reputation and compromise his right to a fair trial. In their legal filings, Diddy's team claims that the release of the video was strategically aimed at influencing public opinion and tainting the potential jury pool. They have requested an evidentiary hearing to investigate the alleged government misconduct, along with access to related documents and communications. Additionally, they are pushing for a gag order to prevent further leaks from government personnel and seeking to suppress the video from being admitted in court as evidence. The legal strategy centers on the argument that the video's publication has led to damaging pre-trial publicity, which they claim jeopardizes Diddy's ability to receive an impartial trial. Meanwhile, Diddy faces serious charges, including racketeering and sex trafficking, and remains in custody awaiting his trial, scheduled for May 2025.This legal move reflects the high stakes for both Diddy and his legal team, as the video serves as a critical piece of evidence in the broader criminal case against him, alongside multiple civil lawsuits alleging abuse and misconduct.Hollywood fixers are the shadowy operatives who ensure that the dark secrets of the rich and famous stay buried. Sean "Diddy" Combs is making a significant court appearance today, October 10, 2024, in Manhattan federal court. This marks his first appearance before Judge Arun Subramanian, who will preside over his trial on serious charges including sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy. During the hearing, both legal teams are expected to discuss trial scheduling and key procedural steps. Combs' defense has been pushing for the trial to begin in April or May 2025, while prosecutors have not yet specified their preferred timeline. This court appearance follows Diddy's continued detention since his arrest in September 2024. His legal team has made several unsuccessful attempts to secure his release on bail, with judges repeatedly denying their requests due to concerns that he poses a flight risk and could tamper with witnesses. The charges against him allege that he led a criminal network that coerced and abused women over many years, silencing them through intimidation and violence. In our second segment...Sean "Diddy" Combs and his legal team have accused the U.S. government of leaking damaging information to the media, which they claim is compromising his right to a fair trial. Specifically, they allege that federal agents leaked a 2016 surveillance video showing Diddy assaulting his former girlfriend, Cassie Ventura, which was later aired by CNN. Diddy's attorneys argue that these leaks, including details of searches at his homes, are tainting the jury pool and have requested a gag order to prevent further disclosures.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Sean "Diddy" Combs is currently preparing for his defense from behind bars at Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center.
