This week on Autonomy Markets, Grayson Brulte and Walter Piecyk discuss Lyft's autonomous vehicle manifesto, the impending consolidation of the LiDAR market, the emerging personally-owned autonomous vehicle fleet market, and Waabi's driver-out strategy.Lyft's manifesto highlights the potential for private car owners to integrate their personally-owned autonomous vehicles into the Lyft network, a concept similar to Elon Musk's vision for Tesla owners. For this to become a reality and for autonomous vehicles to scale effectively, a national regulatory framework is essential.During his Senate confirmation hearing for Deputy Secretary of Transportation this week, Steven Bradbury expressed enthusiasm for autonomous vehicles and advocated for a federal framework. Mr. Bradbury also emphasized a market-driven approach to technology adoption, rather than government-mandated solutions such as LiDAR.Currently, the LiDAR market is dominated by Hesai, but consolidation looms a majority of the publicly-traded pure-play LiDAR companies face dwindling cash reserves and limited revenues. In the autonomous trucking market, Waabi aims to go driver-out on public roads by the end of the year. But can they pull it off? And if Volvo isn't their OEM partner, who will be? Grayson and Walt debate the challenges ahead and the role of autonomous driving retrofit kits in the industry's future.Episode Chapters0:00 Lyft's Autonomous Vehicle Manifesto5:39 Personally-Owned Autonomous Vehicles11:22 Fleet Management16:11 Waymo / Lyft Relationship18:05 Credit Card and Telco Partnerships20:10 May Mobility, Mobileye / Lyft Partnership22:02 Autonomous Vehicle Policy24:41 LiDAR Market31:05 Waabi Driver-Out Plans39:52 Autonomous Driving Technology47:04 Unforced Error of The Week49:08 Next WeekRecorded on Thursday, February 20, 2025--------About The Road to AutonomyThe Road to Autonomy® is a leading source of data, insight and commentary on autonomous vehicles/trucks and the emerging autonomy economy™.Sign up for This Week in The Autonomy Economy newsletter: https://www.roadtoautonomy.com/autonomy-economy/See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The administrative state - the agencies comprising the Executive Branch of the U.S. federal government - has exploded in size and reach since 1946 when President Truman signed the Administrative Procedure Act into law. The APA has been amended a bit since then, but has it kept up with current challenges? While the Executive Branch has been growing, the other two branches of government have been changing as well. Congress has increasingly tended to delegate authority to agencies. And courts are changing their views not only of how much leeway agencies have in interpreting and applying statutes, but also of what methodology courts themselves should employ when interpreting statutes, including the APA. This panel will discuss how these changes impact the government and the governed.Featuring:Hon. A special treat for you on the show today as we sit down with one of the most familiar faces and voices in Australian Olympic broadcasting Basil Zempilas to learn about his extraordinary media career and his memories and experiences the Olympics have brought him! We find out from Basil some of his favourite moments he has called at the Olympics and just what it was like to have followed in the footsteps in fellow broadcast icons Bruce McAvaney, Sandy Roberts & Dennis Cometti. We also go over that historic call of his from Salt Lake City in 2002 in which he was the voice behind Steven Bradbury's iconic gold and what that means to him more than 20 years later. Added to this we find out about some of his other favourite calls, just why he was so happy to be able to use the word "gobbledygook" during the Tokyo Olympics and whether or not he might've found a fitting replacement for him on this very show for when the day comes for him to retire. It's an epic chat that you will also go gobbledygook for so tune in and get pumped!

This week your intrepid hosts return some friendly fire from esteemed peer and friend of the pod Erwin Jackson! Despite Erwin's commentary on the positive role IAMs have played aligning the finance sector around rallying support for a 1.5C scenario, one currently immuno-compromised T. Reed refused to de-escalate and doubled down on the critique. Frankie weighed in on guard rails and it all went south quickly. We await further commentary from Erwin and others to populate our newly minted IAM CRISIS CORNER section of the pod :-) Our deep dive this week sees us wade into controversial waters to tackle the most talked about paper in town, the Commonwealth's “Safeguard Mechanism Reforms consultation paper”, currently open for comment until Tuesday 20 September.Helping us unpack the fraught history of this Steven Bradbury of climate policies and ‘last fire in the forest' is a very very special guest: none other than the battle-hardened, climate politics guru of note, the inimitable Katharine Murphy! We were super chuffed and not a little starstruck that Katharine, political editor at Guardian Australia, took time out from her writing sabbatical (look out for her Quarterly Essay at the back end of this year) to talk all things Safeguard with us.In the course of the pod we also flag another, related and ongoing policy review that will have implications for the Safeguard and is also not without a level of controversy: the independent review of Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) being led by former Chief Scientist Professor Ian Chubb. The panel led by Chubb is yet to begin public consultation but that is due to kick off imminently so stay tuned!Luke, Tennant and Frankie's collective One More Thing for this week was appreciation to the marvelous Katharine Murphy for taking the time out to join this pod. We hope her writing sabbatical goes well and on the off chance you're not already following her on socials, you can find her on twitter @murpharoo. That's all folks, see you next time! Steven Bradbury, the last man standing. Australia’s first Winter Olympic Gold medallist. Australia’s “luckiest” gold medallist. But what did it actually take for him to get that opportunity? How many years of sacrifice, injuries, near death experiences, did it take for him to have that chance? I loved this chat with Steve and especially understanding how he took everything that he learnt from being an athlete and applied it to his work today. This is a man with incredible resilience and the ability to adapt. Enjoy!
