Ken and Betsey reconvene for another Beach Talk. Betsey quizzes Ken on his milestone birthday this past weekend. The two reflect on aging, keeping perspective, and the power of purpose. Ken remembers his former professors, Carl F. H. Henry, Clark Pinnock, and John R. W. Stott who represented a version of Evangelicalism that is unrecognizable today. The Atlantic Monthly posted an article entitled "The People Who Do Not Read Books," especially those who seem to take pride, like Ye (Kanye West), in declaring their utter contempt for reading. It sparks a conversation around the value of engaging the written word. Ken shares his current morning read. The two reflect on the gun violence in California this week, including the massing shootings in Monterey Park the night of the celebration of the Lunar New Year at a dance studio and then just hours later, another in Half Moon Bay. It leads to a discussion on the discipline of lament. To wrap up, they briefly bemoan the efforts of the new House Speaker (Kevin McCarthy) to appoint key leadership roles. The former President is back on social media, but he gets reprimanded by a judge who ceremoniously threw out his "frivolous" lawsuit against his 2016 challenger (Hilliary Clinton). It's going to be a forgettable year with the Bakersfield Representative in charge.Ken reviews Spielberg's The Fabelmans and the joys of grandparenthood, and Betsey chimes in.Become a Patron: www.patreon.com/beachedwhitemaleSupport the show

That's right... We're not done with the 1957 Broadway classic West Side Story! Today in this very special holiday bonus episode, we're talking about the 2021 Steven Spielberg adaptation. We talk about: - Spielberg's style and the political & sociological context that he and screenwriter Tony Kushner bring to the original material - Shifts in religious imagery from 1961 to 2021 - and how the film shifts the setting of the story's religious/liturgical moments - How the film raises the stakes of Tony & Maria's love by paying deeper attention to the political & racial context of the late 50s - A deeper and more nuanced take on Maria & Anita and the ways they navigate white society - Valentina, the new character created by Kushner and Spielberg - and what it means to have Rita Moreno's presence in the film - The phenomenon of midrash in the Jewish exegetical tradition and how this film riffs on the complications & tensions inherent in the original material - The theological question of whether it's true that when “love comes on so strong, there is no right or wrong” – and Maria as a (literal!) Marian figure You'll hear tracks from the 2021 Film Soundtrack: - David Alvarez and the Sharks singing “La Borinquena”. - Gustavo Dudamel leading players from the New York and LA Philharmonics in “Mambo” from the Dance at the Gym - Ansel Elgorty and Rachel Zegler singing “One Hand, One Heart” - Rachel Zegler, Ana Isabelle, Ilda Mason, Annelise Cepero, Jamila Velazquez, Andrea Burns, Tanairi Sade Vazquez & Yassmin Alers singing “I Feel Pretty” - Ariana DeBose and Rachel Zegler singing “A Boy Like That/I Have A Love” - Rita Moreno singing “Somewhere” Continue the conversation with Peter (@pgeinvan) and Nathan (@nathan_lerud) on Twitter, and follow the Gospel of Musical Theatre on Instagram or Twitter @gospelofmt.
This week is part two of our discussion on UFOs and all the crazy things people have seen in the skies of Australia. We begin our discussion by diving deeper into the story of the Knowles family's encounter and we hop into our theories on what they saw that night in 1988. That night the Knowles family - a mother and 3 of her sons - were terrorized by what they say was a strange bright light that followed them at high speeds, seemed to be toying with them, and then ultimately lifted + dropped their car off the road. It left behind a strange dust substance on the top of their car, their minds felt as if they were being squeezed with psychic energy, and reportedly dented the top of their vehicle. What did the Knowles family see that night back in 1988? Was the family just delirious after driving for 13+ hours straight, less than halfway on their long road trip from Perth to Melbourne, Australia? Did they witness an alien craft that night or perhaps another strange Australian phenomenon sometimes referred to as "the ghost lights of Australia" aka "The Min Min Lights"? Was this some sort of strange story they concocted that night for their 5 minutes of fame? We also talk about our friends and listeners Matt(man) and Mark who were gracious enough to send us their story about a strange GIANT translucent creature in the skies above Sydney, Australia they witness around 1989/1990. Over the years the memory of that strange encounter seems to have never faded... What exactly was it that those two boys saw that day floating and then zooming away above Sydney? You'll have to listen to find out what we think! One thing is for sure - if Steven Spielburg is looking for a place for a new UFO movie...we know just the place to film it. Thank you so much for listening, don't forget to tell your friends to check us out, and as always... BE RAD! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ SHOW INFO

Steven Spielburg and Oscar, here we come! Boys and their toys.
