historical king of Ireland (c. 941 – 1014)
POPULARITY
Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss one of the best known events and figures in Irish history. In 1014 Brian Boru, High King of Ireland, defeated the Hiberno-Norse forces of Sigtrygg Silkbeard and allies near their Dublin stronghold, with Brian losing his life on the day of battle. Soon chroniclers in Ireland and abroad were recording and retelling the events, raising the status of Brian Boru as one who sacrificed himself for Ireland, Christ-like, a connection reinforced by the battle taking place on Good Friday. While some of the facts are contested, the Battle of Clontarf became a powerful symbol of what a united Ireland could achieve by force against invaders.WithSeán Duffy Professor of Medieval Irish and Insular History at Trinity College DublinMáire Ní Mhaonaigh Professor of Celtic and Medieval Studies at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of St John's College, CambridgeAnd Alex Woolf Professor of Medieval Studies at the University of St AndrewsProducer: Simon TillotsonReading list:Howard B. A feral child named Wolf is being raised by wolves deep in the forest, until he is suddenly whisked away to a subterranean netherworld by the Tuatha De Danann; a strange and elusive race. In this otherworldly realm, where mortal time moves imperceptibly quickly, these 'ever-living ones' raise and train the boy for their own ends; returning a formidable stealth-warrior, back to the world of men. In Wolf's absence, Ireland has become a more dangerous place, as the Vikings strive to gain control of the country. However, a young southern commander called Brian Boru and his enigmatic counsellor, Amergen, mean to thwart the Viking' plans. But they desperately need Wolf's particular set of skills for a perilous mission deep into enemy territory. And so they set a trap to ensnare Wolf and his daring band of Rangers.
In a distant future, giant clay figures are pitted against each other in a race through a desolate terrain. They are controlled by racers who have secretly bet on a specific creature to cross the finish line first. However, all racers have control over all of the creatures and can change their bets during the race. The locals call this chaotic contest Golem Run by Tony Cotterill and Ren Multamäki from Dragon Dawn Productions. Ruth O'Hagan hosts part 2 of “The Country Girls in Conversation: A Tribute to Edna O'Brien”. Ireland's Greatest Female Writer, Edna O'Brien, was laid to rest in her ‘Bed of Heaven' underneath Brian Boru's Round Tower on Holy Island/ Inis Cealtra in Co Clare, on Saturday August 10th 2024. Ruth O'Hagan in conversation with Carol McNamara, joined by another country girl - Tara Sparling with continued reflections from near and far on Edna's life, and work, as the conversation offers insights and possibilities for the continuity of Edna's voice from “the fount of her fiction” in East Clare. Today, we dive into the rise of one of Ireland's most iconic and celebrated leaders—Brian Boru, the High King. In the popular psyche, Brian Boru is known as the King who would unite the Irish clans and stand against the Viking invaders. But was this really true? What is the Real History of Ireland’s most... The post The Rise of Brian Boru first appeared on Shows What You Know.
We look at both and talk about the pros and cons then mention our favourites,
A fascinating show hosted by Ruth O'Hagan in conversation with Carol McNamara in studio. Ruth and Carol spoke about Edna's funeral mass in St. Joseph's Church in Tuamgraney, her burial on Inis Cealtra/Holy Island, featuring Tommy Holland, Edna's 2nd cousin who shares some of Edna's Lineage in the footsteps of Brian Boru. There were local stories about Edna and her impact on the area, while sharing some truths that are now no longer rural legends. Joining live from Cork was Dr Maureen O' Connor, the Senior Lecturer from the School of English and Digital Humanities in UCC. Maureen brought us into the study of Edna O'Brien over the many years of her international academic career. There were several reflections on Edna, and her impact, throughout the show: - Roisin Bugler a local Poet from Mountshannon, where Edna has been laid to rest, created an incredibly beautiful poem in honour of Edna's passing. - Local writer and playwright Tara Sparling, who like Edna, is also from the village of Tuamgraney, spoke to Ruth and the listeners about growing up in a place where the immediacy of a leading role model of Irish and female writing, made writing tangible. - Trish Murphy Psychosexual Therapist and Irish Times Columnist, in a recording, offers insight on Edna's impact on sexuality and desire. Ruth also recorded several fascinating interviews on Inis Cealtra / Holy Island before and after Edna's funeral, such as John McColgan of River Dance fame as well as Journalists Helen Quinn and Marian Richardson. The show also includes some pieces of Edna's favourite music, and soundscapes from her burial on Holy Island. As originally broadcast on SBCR on Sunday 11th August 2024
Ever heard of Arcs? Cole Wehrle has! Today on the Space-Cast!, we're joined by the little-known indie designer himself to discuss Arcs from a few unusual angles: the debt it owes to trick-taking, the many literary inspirations behind the game, and its unusual development process. Also of note, some comparisons between Arcs and Brian Boru, a sidebar book recommendation, and Wehrle's wariness of Balatro. Truly, we're covering everything!
The Battle of Clontarf (1014) was one of those unique and dividing moments in Irish History, but how much do we know about it? The traditional narrative of this event places the Irish fighting against the Norse invaders who held Dublin. Still, in this episode, Dr Denis Casey https://deniscasey.com/ shows us that this hypothesis is not entirely true. Brian Boru, king of Ireland and killed at the battle, achieved heroic status in the Irish imaginary, but how did this story come to be? Join Niamh and Dr Denis Casey in this investigation. A więc pierwsza część – A capella. Zamknijcie oczy. Zespół już gotowy na scenie, goście za kulisami a Wy siedzicie wygodnie w fotelach i słuchacie… Audycja zawiera utwory: “Rivers of Babylon”, wyk. So the name "Irish Restaurant Company" may not be too familiar, but if I were to say Galway Bay, Killarney House, Brian Boru, Pirates Cove, or Egg Nog, you might perk up! Today, we speak with GM Sean Lynch, and co-owner Anthony Clarke about their four restaurants and how each has become not only a restaurant in a community but a part OF the community. From fundraising dinners to making the staff and customers feel truly like family. We talk about the Axis of Evil (trivia team at Galway's Pub Quiz Night) and their donations to Box of Rain; and the $800,000 in charitable contributions that the Irish Restaurant Company has facilitated and contributed to that goes back to our community. Galway Bay got a renovation recently as did Killarney House, and up this winter--Pirate's Cove! New menus and of course, egg nog. Yes, the famous Galway Bay Egg Nog is currently on a slow boat from Ireland, and this year they are bringing in 2 containers worth--according to Anthony it is about 4,600 bottles! But you can find it at any of their restaurants, most area liquor stores, and even online (but they cannot ship so you need to pick it up at a restaurant). And don't forget, the special Galway Bay Egg Nog Ice Cream is available too in partnership with Always Ice Cream! Truly a great organization and a great bunch of people! Have a listen! Starting out in any hobby can be daunting. There is so much to learn and understand. The modern board game hobby is no different. There is terminology that will be unfamiliar to people who have not played much other than Monopoly or The Game of Life. Even the idea that you do anything other than roll and move can be alien and lead to analysis paralysis. So in this article, I want to look at how you can introduce people to our hobby. Just in time for St. Patrick's day, we are joined by Rab Fulton from Ireland. He hosts live storytelling shows called Celtic Tales and is the author of numerous books. We discuss how linguistics, geography and trade routes shaped Irish lore. Rab gives us an amalgamated version of the Irish creation story, the wars and peaces of the Gods, the folkloric heroes, Fae Folk, Finn McCool, St. Patrick, Brian Boru and others. For more details on that see: https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/celtic-tales-storytelling-show-tickets-503373151647I also teach storytelling, with an emphasis on landscape, memory and story. Storytelling is still very much a living part of the fabric of Galway and Connemara, and of my own family back in Scotland. This means that though I teach in the university, my approach is not academic as such. I teach as a practitioner of the craft. I also enjoy helping others create stories from their own memories and family stories. A good example of this is a bilingual (English / Irish) project I did with teenagers during lockdown. You can hear some of their stories at https://www.mixcloud.com/rabfulton/our-stories-transition-year-tales-part-one/A well as teaching I am currently working on a another project engaging with memory. This is the Poetry as Commemoration. I am working with another group of young adults / teens to reflect on the exhibitions in Galway Museum about the bloody events that surrounded the creation of an independent Ireland.

Growing up in Germany, I started playing traditional trick-taking games like Skat or Doppelkopf from a relatively young age. I'm used to the idea of suits, trump, following suit, taking tricks, gleaning information from what cards others play and much more. Traditional trick-taking games sort of have their own language. So I love to see modern games developing this mechanism further and incorporating it into other mechanisms, creating completely new game experiences. But mostly, it features songwriting by Marc Gunn with guests including: Screeched Inn, The Muckers, Jamie Haeuser, Sam Gillogly, Nathan Deese, and Mikey Mason. Selcouth means, “when everything is strange and different, yet you find it marvelous anyway.” The album is not completely Celtic and it's not just science fiction and fantasy. It's a fusion of the two. It's heartfelt and a lot of fun. It's now on sale in my Bandcamp store. Check out Selcouth now. THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST!
