In a very special episode of Film Stories, Simon is joined by Andrew Davis, perhaps best known for directing films such as The Fugitive, Under Siege, Holes and more. Those movies certainly come up in the extensive conversation between the pair. Davis has also, with Jeff Biggers, written his first novel, Disturbing The Bones, and there's a strong movie link to it as well. So it's come to this... A Dad Bod Rap Pod mailbag episode. We are celebrating our 300th episode by fielding questions from some people we respect. Show hosts Demone Carter, David Ma and Nate LeBlanc are extremely grateful to have met and interacted with so many talented and cool people over the past few years and we reached out to a few of them to send in some open-ended questions about hip-hop music and culture. Underground rap luminaries such as rappers Open Mike Eagle, Illogic, Rob Sonic, and Fat Tony, as well as producers Blockhead, Roper Williams, Cutso, and Maker, as well as comedian and top tier podcast guest across genres Josh Gondelman provided some funny, insightful and in some cases rather odd opportunities for us to bring you the nuanced rap discussion we have been working on for the last few hundred recording sessions. For this special episode we are also layering in some extremely humbling voice messages from a colorful cast of characters who were kind enough to call in and tell us what they like about the show. We were blown away to receive entries from such great artists as Daedelus, Murs, and Tajai from Souls of Mischief, among others. We would like to thank everyone who has ever listened to this program, everyone who's ever told a friend about us, everyone that's ever written us a check, all of the folks behind the scenes who help us out every week, all of the people who gave us advice over the years, especially in the beginning, and all of our past contributors, whether they were interview subjects, contributed music, or just interacted with us online. This has been one hell of a ride and we are very grateful to hip-hop itself, especially the underground scene that birthed us and has taught us so much about life and provided us with so many great opportunities. We love making this show and contributing in a small way to the culture that we have been obsessed with our entire lives. It's an honor and a privilege to get these takes off and to examine this amazing music, and while we're not planning on stopping anytime soon, we are in a reflective mood since we reached a round number in the episode run. Huge shouts out to Cutso and DEM ONE for our theme song, Taylor Weng for the audio adjustments, OME and the entire Stony Island massive for providing us a home. We hope you enjoy this week's episode. We here at Dad Bod Rap Pod like nothing more than when an established artist takes a big swing, and makes an ambitious record outside of their comfort zone. That is certainly the circumstance that our guests this week find themselves in. For their first collaborative project, entitled Temple Needs Water Village Needs Peace, Memphis rapper Lukah and LA-based producer Real Bad Man have cooked up a compelling exploration of history and myth. The album, out March 29th, with some exclusive snippets debuting here, exists in its own unique sonic landscape, and Lukah brings his storytelling prowess to the forefront. We're excited about this swerve in direction from two artists we have interviewed before and whose work we admire. We also spend a few minutes with RBM breaking down last year's Serpent album with Kool Keith, an unexpected late-career triumph for the artist formerly known as Rhythm X. In the intro segment, hosts Nate LeBlanc, David Ma and Demone Carter name some of their favorite one MC + one producer albums and after the interview, we get into some of our least favorite of those kind of projects, something we talk about about often but don't usually record. Our theme song was produced by the homie Cutso and rapped by DEM ONE. This episode was mixed by Taylor Weng. DBRP is a palm tree on Stony Island, the single best hip-hop related audio platform to ever exist.

Moving on to (Pink Narcissus 1971) Rad photographer and drag performer James Bidgood gives us some lovely magical fantasies of a male prostitute, annnnnnd now I want a tofu pup! Onward to (The Triple echo 1972) our first of 2 films with whisper talkin Oliver Reed. Here we have deserting soldier Barton who cross dresses to escape detection and the horrors of war. Glenda Jackson is an amazing person and actress and is also in this. Is it good? Relax, we'll spill the tea. Next is (Stony Island 1976) where people in Chicago work very hard to start a large funky jazz fusion band that practices literally most of the time. Fugitive, Holes, and Above the law director Andrew Davis is doing his first feature here, also vocalist and guitarist Susanna Hoffs is here holding the “Eternal Flame!” Finally today we review 1979's (The Brood) Before David Cronenberg was on Star Trek discovery, he directed movies, some of which are great, all of which are weird. This is no exception. Deal with your trauma or it may produce anger babies which threaten us all. Oliver reed is here whisper talkin about the amazing Psychoplasmics. That's all for today and as always thanks so much for listening. Please tell your friends.

We recently had the pleasure of attending the Treefort Music Festival in Boise, Idaho, an annual event bringing an eclectic musical lineup as well as discussions, food, beer, and much more. We had a great time at the fest and one of the highlights was getting to have a conversation with Open Mike Eagle and Video Dave. Mike owns our podcast network Stony Island and we have interviewed him several times before, but he is truly one of the most practiced and engaging podcast guests on the planet. This was our first time talking to Video Dave and we all got along well immediately. Mike drops some knowledge about What Had Happened Was Season 3, his TV writing gig, and his feelings around performing in these uncertain times. Dave tells us about his excellent video projections and his last album, Week 1560. Our hosts also share some impressions about traveling, music festivals, and getting back together to pod in person. Beats this week are from our friend Controller 7's new album entitled exhale02: Moments. In Season 2, Episode 6 we hear how Natia Simone - Founder of Village Minds, created the organization to do food runs for seniors in her neighborhood near Stony Island, that were impacted by looting in early 2020. When many stores were emptied, she mentions how many mothers and the elderly didn’t have many local options to buy basic necessities and Natia decided “someone should do something…and figure out how to help them!” Being a “Chicago Girl” born and raised on Chicago’s southside, Natia grew up with a large supportive family. She mentions how much of an impact it was to have “Aunties, Uncles, and Grandpas in the neighborhood, all contributing to your wellbeing.” In June of 2020 Natia started a Facebook Live asking for someone to step up and help the community, and quickly realized that she would need to be that person! “Someone in the facebook comments section mentioned - “You do it!” What started off as a few posts asking for donations, turned into the beginnings of Village Minds, and the organization feeding 462 people.Since then, Natia has been primarily focused on supporting low income seniors, realizing there was already a need for help even before the lootings and coronavirus. One of the seniors they helped support mentions “we have gone so long without quality food, we forgot what good food tasted like.”For volunteer or donation opportunities, or want to refer someone who needs help, check Village Minds Facebook page! ORIGINAL AIRDATE:  APRIL 12th, 2012 on The Director's Club Podcast. RECORDED AS POP CULTURE CLUB:  For this special 20-minute episode, I interview director Andrew Davis to talk about his debut film from 1978, STONY ISLAND which is being released on DVD & VOD on April 24th, 2012.  We learn about how the film was made, and its cultural significance, including how Andrew got his start in the business.  In addition, we briefly discuss memories of filming THE FUGITIVE here in the city of Chicago back in the early 90s as well.   STONY ISLAND was filmed on the gritty streets of Chicago’s south side and tells the story of Richie Bloom (Richie Davis), the only white kid on the block, as he forms an R&B band with his best friend, Kevin (Edward “Stoney” Robinson). With the help of their mentor, aging sax legend Percy (Gene “Daddy G” Barge), they pull together a funky supergroup, stealing practice time at night in the local funeral home. Despite few resources and heavy losses this resilient group of dedicated musicians–armed only with wit, sleight of hand and outrageous Chicago bravado–must come together to finally make their smash debut.  Thanks again to Andrew Davis for being a guest on the show and providing this incredibly interesting look at an underseen gem that integrates both Chicago history and also beautifully captures how the love of music brings people together.   Order your DVD by visiting the official movie website: http://stonyislandmovie.com

Tonight's special guest is Jim Heaney from Chicago, survivor and author of "Divine Child: Evil vs the Angels of Stoney Island," a story about child abuse and children abuse healing. Jim says, "When your own family doesn't work out, pay attention. There's probably someone else to help you grow up." For Jim Heaney, it was the angels of Stony Island. After being molested by a neighbor, ten-year old Jimmy is abandoned by the people who should be protecting him. His grades and behavior plummet, and he starts drinking. But there are still bright spots in his life in Chicago's Stony Island neighborhood including baseball down by the railroad tracks, and his parish school. But survival is not recovery. The dark legacy of Jim's sexual abuse continues to haunt his adult life. He narrowly escapes prison, and although he quits drinking, unresolved anger threatens to destroy every good relationship in his life. "Divine Child: Evil vs. The Angels of Stony Island" tells how young Jimmy built on compassion first experienced in Stony Island to climb from despair to recovery. He shares his story in the hope that it will give other survivors of child abuse the tools to make new life for themselves. A child abuse author and speaker, Jim has spoken about child abuse and memory healing in the context of his recovery from the after-effects of sexual abuse and addiction issues to thousands of adults and young people at conferences throughout North America.
