Recorded - 6/15/2025 On Episode 326 of the Almost Sideways Movie Podcast, we review two of our most anticipated films of the summer. One is a follow up to an indie breakout hit while the other won a prestigious film festival prize last year. Both reviews were split. Who liked what? Then we count down the worst endings in movies we still consider good. There are some controversial takes! Then, in our Come to the Stable segment, we review a film from 50 years ago that has been instrumental on many filmmakers throughout the years.

Laugh Tracks Legends of Comedy with Randy and Steve

The 50th (!) anniversary of Saturday Night Live has spawned a "biopic" focused on the debut show and the original cast. A fond look back is certainly deserved for Garrett Morris who battled stereotypes (think Chico Escuela and "Beisbol has been bery-bery good to me") to become part of television history. A fine actor and singer, Garrett was initially hired as part of the writing staff, then added to the cast after Lorne Michaels saw his work in Cooley High. After SNL, Garrett didn't enjoy the starring movie and tv roles of some of his colleagues, but he carved out a fine career in supporting roles and he periodically makes live appearance telling jokes and showing off his vocal chops. Garrett is a member of the Television Academy Hall of Fame, but he will be forever in our minds shouting the headlines over Chevy Chase's shoulder in the bit "News for the Hearing Impaired." As always find extra clips below and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Garrett Morris? Garrett didn't get too many solo sketches tossed his way at SNL so he made the most of them, including this bit on the White Guilt Relief Fund. https://youtu.be/JxAoPcZZatY?si=oVegkbGFXtu1-OwL When Steve Harvey welcomed Garrett to Celebrity Family Feud it was time for the master to toss a little playful crap at the student. https://youtu.be/g-H-09zdweY?si=DrihXb1pOJXFgduV Garrett remains a playful presence on screen and in the occasional live show -- telling jokes and singing. Here's a clip from the Catalina Jazz and Blues Club in 2017. https://youtu.be/f8fturBS6xM?si=mBDopchmLgv3zu-N

He has recently put out an incredible piece of art called 74: Out of Time featuring a host of emcees, Awon, ill Camille, vic Spencer, pink siifu, billy woods, tha God Fahim, Fly Anakin, Cooley High and many more. Set in Chicago in 1964 we follow two best friends as they navigate skipping class, quarter parties, and living for today. Both a celebration of young adulthood and a heartening tale of the friendships that inspire us, this movie is one that demands rewatches and all the praise that comes with us. Cooley High is a 1975 American coming-of-age comedy-drama film that follows the narrative of high school seniors and best friends, Leroy "Preach" Jackson (Glynn Turman) and Richard "Cochise" Morris (Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs). Written by Eric Monte and directed by Michael Schultz. Richard "Cochise" Morris (Lawrence-Hilton Jacobs), a local basketball hero, and Leroy "Preach" Jackson (Glynn Turman), who dreams of a career in writing, are likable Chicago high school students in 1960s Chicago. They're into hanging out with friends, pretty girls and the Motown sounds so popular during the era. Each wants to make it big in his own way, but not everybody they meet is looking out for them, as they learn when a seemingly harmless outing goes awry. Learn more about your ad choices. Kevin is joined by the critically acclaimed Director/Writer/Producer George Tillman Jr. to discuss making movies from the heart.George Tillman Jr., Director, Producer, WriterWith a career spanning over two decades, George Tillman Jr. has brought a unique voice and perspective to the film industry, tackling a wide range of genres and themes in his work. He is best known for his films Soul Food, Men of Honor, and The Hate U Give, as well as for producing the successful Barbershop franchise.A tale of two test screenings (3:28)George Tillman Jr. reminisces about his disastrous first test screening in Beverly Hills and how that experience made him fearful of future audience screenings. He contrasts this with the audience screening for Soul Foodand how that screening became one of the highlights of his life.Early influences (10:49)Tillman discusses the two films that influenced him as a teenager: Taxi Driver and Cooley High. Cooley High was the first film Tillman saw with African Americans in the lead roles, and it showed real friendships and relationships. Taxi Driver stood out to Tillman for its camera work and the way it controlled the viewer's experience.Working with De Niro (20:35)Kevin asks George about his greatest influences and mentors. George talks about working with Robert De Niro on Men of Honor and how De Niro guided him in post-production, even advising Tillman to cut some of De Niro's own performance for the sake of the film. The $150,000 movie success (24:18)Tillman talks about raising money for his first film, going mainly to family and friends in Chicago, and taking that movie to Hollywood and selling it to Savoy Pictures for $1,000,000. Unfortunately, Savoy Pictures went out of business, and that first film was lost, but it helped Tillman make connections that led to green lighting Soul Food.Tell the stories you want to tell (31:17)Kevin asks George what he has learned on his journey as a writer, producer, and director. George talks about making movies from the heart and about telling the stories that you want to tell.Feeling the audience's reaction (43:05)Kevin asks George to talk about audience test screenings and if the audience response was responsible for big changes in any of his films. George goes into what it feels like to participate in a test screening and sit among the audience. He talks about how he made changes to a movie based on what he felt around him at the audience test screening. They then go into positive test screenings as a validation of the filmmaker's instincts.Host: Kevin GoetzGuest: George Tillman Jr.Producer:  Kari CampanoFor more information about George Tillman Jr.:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/george_tillman/Twitter: https://twitter.com/george_tillmanFor more information about Kevin Goetz:Website: www.KevinGoetz360.comAudienceology Book: https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Audience-ology/Kevin-Goetz/9781982186678Facebook, Twitter, Instagram: @KevinGoetz360Linked In @Kevin GoetzScreen Engine/ASI Website: www.ScreenEngineASI.com

PUBLIC VERSION. Director Michael Schultz is an absolute legend in film (THE LAST DRAGON, COOLEY HIGH, CAR WASH, DISORDERLIES, KRUSH GROOVE, SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND, etc) and one of the most prolific directors in television (THE ADVENTURES OF YOUNG INDIANA JONES, L.A. LAW, PICKET FENCES, FELICITY, ALLY MCBEAL, CHARMED, GILMORE GIRLS, BLACK-ISH, NEW GIRL, ARROW, CHUCK, etc). Starting out with a dream of serving in the United States Air Force, Schultz unexpectedly found himself pivoting into the theater where he would cast a (then) unknown actor named Al Pacino in one of his very first plays. Through sheer ambition, tenacity, and raw talent, Schultz would pave his own way into Hollywood. He would go on to direct some of the biggest actors, comedians, and musicians in the history of entertainment and now… 50 years later… Michael Schultz is one the most prolific directors in American television and a bonafide hero of Black cinema. Best of all, he has also managed to remain one of the most humble human beings you'll ever be blessed to meet. In this master class of an episode, Schultz shares his amazing career journey with a truly starstruck Adam, Joe, and Arwen. Prepare to be inspired, friends!
