On this flashback of Take It Personal Radio, we're hitting you with a remastered version of episode 50, our Hieroglyphics Tribute. This was a mammoth one. We've got special guests Slug, Murs, Apathy, J-Zone, The Grouch & Breakbeat Lou stopping by.  We interview Del, Domino, Casual & Tajai and they've got stories for days! Del talks about doing shrooms with Q-Tip to Casual freestyling with Pharoahe Monch at the Gavin. We touch on Casual vs. Saafir and the impact it had on battle rap. We unfortunately find out Ice Cube wasn't a fan of Gang Starr and thought Kool Keith was too weird. Del explains what it was like not only being cousins with Ice Cube, but their musical similarities and his involvement earlier on in his career. We learn about Del's feelings towards the Gorillaz, while Domino breaks down just about every Hiero collaboration imaginable. We talk I Wish My Brother George Was Here, '93 Til Infinity, No Need For Alarm, Fear Itself, Like It Should Be and No Man's Land. We discuss their rap dominance prior to being dropped by the label. Tajai's breaks down his feelings towards the group's sophomore album and the importance of each album sounding different.  This episode can be a slow burn or a fast one, but we all know Hiero is til infinity!  www.takeitpersonalradio.com www.patreon.com/TakeItPersonal

So it's come to this... A Dad Bod Rap Pod mailbag episode. We are celebrating our 300th episode by fielding questions from some people we respect. Show hosts Demone Carter, David Ma and Nate LeBlanc are extremely grateful to have met and interacted with so many talented and cool people over the past few years and we reached out to a few of them to send in some open-ended questions about hip-hop music and culture. Underground rap luminaries such as rappers Open Mike Eagle, Illogic, Rob Sonic, and Fat Tony, as well as producers Blockhead, Roper Williams, Cutso, and Maker, as well as comedian and top tier podcast guest across genres Josh Gondelman provided some funny, insightful and in some cases rather odd opportunities for us to bring you the nuanced rap discussion we have been working on for the last few hundred recording sessions. For this special episode we are also layering in some extremely humbling voice messages from a colorful cast of characters who were kind enough to call in and tell us what they like about the show. We were blown away to receive entries from such great artists as Daedelus, Murs, and Tajai from Souls of Mischief, among others. We would like to thank everyone who has ever listened to this program, everyone who's ever told a friend about us, everyone that's ever written us a check, all of the folks behind the scenes who help us out every week, all of the people who gave us advice over the years, especially in the beginning, and all of our past contributors, whether they were interview subjects, contributed music, or just interacted with us online. This has been one hell of a ride and we are very grateful to hip-hop itself, especially the underground scene that birthed us and has taught us so much about life and provided us with so many great opportunities. We love making this show and contributing in a small way to the culture that we have been obsessed with our entire lives. It's an honor and a privilege to get these takes off and to examine this amazing music, and while we're not planning on stopping anytime soon, we are in a reflective mood since we reached a round number in the episode run. Huge shouts out to Cutso and DEM ONE for our theme song, Taylor Weng for the audio adjustments, OME and the entire Stony Island massive for providing us a home. We hope you enjoy this week's episode. Atbalsts kara plosītajai Ukrainai: šobrīd nepieciešamā palīdzība

Kā labāk dzīvot

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 21, 2024 48:34

Jau divus gadus Latvijas iedzīvotāji dažādos veidos turpina atbalstīt kara plosīto Ukrainu un tās iedzīvotājus. Par to, kāda palīdzība šobrīd tiek sniegta Ukrainai, interesējamies raidījumā Kā labāk dzīvot.

B. Cox and J.Owe look back at Oakland rap group Souls of Mischief debut album 93 Til Infinity as it turns 30. In the midst of a coastal emergence and commercial recognition in both southern California and the Bay-Area, the teenage group became major players in the Oakland underground scene. After their demos became the talk of certain rap circles and their music was circulated on the legendary "Wake Up Show" with Sway and Tech, the group secured a record deal and started working on their debut album. As a part of the alternative hip-hop collective Heiroglyphics, the album wa entirely produced by group member A-Plus and collective members, Domino, Jay Biz, Casual and group founder Del the Funky Homosapien. Utilizing mainly jazz records from record label CTI Records, the album featured looped jazzy melodies with menacing, but smooth bass tones and snapping drums to give the album its underground feel. The four emcees (Phesto, Opio, Tajai along with A-Plus) impressed with their versatile flows, timely punchlines and skilled wordplay. In a step away from their mainstream contemporaries, the album featured every many topics such as neighborhood violence, the importance of safe sex, exploitation and hanging out.The album featured three singles, the most popular being the classic title track that reached the Top 20 of the Hot Rap Singles and the Top 100 of the Billboard charts. While the album did not have great mainstream success, the album and the ever popular title track have risen in recognition and popularity in the three decades since its release, with many marking it as a landmark underground release and underground West Coast hip-hop classic.Visit The Vault Classic Music Reviews Onlinewww.vaultclassicpod.comBuy Exclusive The Vault Podcast Merchandise!www.vaultclassicpod.com/storeSupport The Vault Classic Music Reviews on Buy Me A Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/vaultclassicpodBuild Your Own Amazing Podcast Website In Less Than 5 Minutes!https://www.podpage.com/?via=ivecre8Show NotesAlbumism: Souls of Mischief Debut Album '93 Til Infinity Turns 25 | Album Anniversaryhttps://albumism.com/features/souls-of-mischief-debut-album-93-til-infinity-album-anniversaryColumbus Free Press: Bus Stile Activities: Souls of Mischief "'93 Til Infinity"https://columbusfreepress.com/article/bus-stile-activities-souls-mischief-%E2%80%9C93-till-infinity%E2%80%9DWGBH Radio: Souls Of Mischief Tajai Massey On The Lasting Power of "'93 Til Infinity"https://www.wgbh.org/culture/2023-06-16/souls-of-mischief-s-tajai-massey-on-the-lasting-power-of-93-til-infinitySupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-vault-classic-music-reviews-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

30 years after their debut, Souls of Mischief are proving that the title of their song "93 'Til Infinity" is true. Currently, they are in the middle of a world tour spanning over 100 dates, selling out shows around the globe, winning over young fans through streaming, and demonstrating a longevity that is rarely seen in rap music. This exclusive interview with all 4 members of Souls - A-Plus, Opio, Phesto and Tajai - touches on their upbringing in East Oakland, their early days recording with Del the Funky Homosapien, traveling to LA as teenagers to build with Ice Cube, Sir Jinx and Eazy-E, and the ups and downs of signing to a major label. As members of the Hieroglyphics collective along with Del, Casual, Pep Love, Domino, and DJ Toure, Souls and their comrades have been successful independent artists since the 90s. They also touch on how they define success for themselves, their pursuit of other careers outside of music, and how their friendship has helped them stick together to inspire new generations through music year after year. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/historyofthebay/support

He is known for his unique rapping style and his 2002 songs "Lacville '79" and "Doobie Ashtray". Despite being a critical success, Devin the Dude has not achieved mainstream success. The New York Times has called him "A brilliant oddball with a spaced-out flow." In addition, he has been called "Rap's best-kept secret" and "Your favorite rapper's favorite rapper".

In episode 39 I talk to comedian Brian Babylon about his love for the Hieroglyphics crew and Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, an American rapper. He began his career writing lyrics for Ice Cube's group Da Lench Mob. In 1991, with the help of Ice Cube, Del released his first solo album, I Wish My Brother George Was Here, at the age of 18. The album was a commercial success largely due to the popularity of the hit single "Mistadobalina". Ultimately Del, who was not pleased with the limited musical range of the album, severed his production-artist relationship with Ice Cube for his next album, No Need for Alarm. No Need for Alarm saw the introduction of the Oakland clique Hieroglyphics, whose original members included Souls of Mischief (Opio, A-Plus, Phesto and Tajai), Casual, Pep Love, Del, and producer Domino. No Need for Alarm helped to expose both the regional Oakland sound of hip hop, as well as the freestyle based, "golden era 90s" style of hip hop being expanded at the time.

Come listen to an audio journey through the life of Souls of Mischief member, Tajai and find out what it was like recording with Del The Funky Homosapien in Los Angeles at the ripe age of 15, how he maintained his grades while attending Stanford while on tour, and how 93 Til Infinite almost didn't make their debut album. Tajai Massey sees Hiero day as a physical manifestation of the Souls of Mischief's most famous song, "93 Til Infiinty", where he and the other emcees give listeners a taste of life in Oakland. These days, living in Oakland, it's hard to ignore the growing wealth disparities, the massive unsheltered population, and continued gentrification. "A lot of folks I see during Hiero Day, they've had to move away, to Stockton, Sac, L.A... anywhere that's cheaper than here. But we see them on Hiero Day, so it's like a big family reunion," says Tajai. Another unfortunate change in the Bay Area: fewer affordable art spaces. This week on Rightnowish, we talk to Tajai about the intersection of culture and the built environment, and the importance of having access to space in order to share, celebrate and create culture.

Special guests Slug, Murs, Apathy, J-Zone, The Grouch & Breakbeat Lou also share their feelings on the Hiero collective and lace us with some of their fondest memories of the music. You'll hear many gems and plenty of "LOL" moments, as well as plenty rewind moments on our Official Hiero Tribute show. Oakland is a city filled with dynasties teams. You had the Raiders, the A’s and most recently, the Warriors. But this Oakland collective, better known as the Hieroglyphics Crew, had a dynasty of their own. Founded by Del the Funky Homosapien, this was squad rolled deep, very deep. They were like the Wu before the Wu even existed. Hieroglyphics featured many  personalities and styles ranging from Del, Casual, Pep Love, Domino, Opio, Phesto, Tajai, A-Plus, Jay-Biz, Mike G, Snupe, Extra Prolific to Toure. Their 3rd eye logo is immediately recognizable as are many of their classics cuts. This mini-mix is from our West Coast Classic series, and while we only scratched the surface, this Hiero tribute serves as a great reminder of the their dominance in hip-hop. Oaktown is full of legends like Rickey Henderson, Bill Russell, Kamala Harris, Tom Hanks, Mark Hamill, Bruce and Brandon Lee, Gary Payton, Marshawn Lynch, 2Pac, Paul Pierce, MC Hammer, Tony! Toni! HUGE! On the latest edition of the Hip Hop for Bernie Sanders Podcast, Matt Sonzala talks to two Bay Area legends who have always been outspoken and released smart, forward thinking, real hip hop music. Tajai of Souls of Mischief and Casual both represent the Hieroglyphics Crew, one of the most successful independent hip hop crews to ever do it. They first broke through in 1993 and both continue to tour the world and even have their own day designated for them in Oakland where they throw an annual hip hop festival for the community. I have admired both of these artists for over 20 years now and I jumped at the chance to talk to them about what we as Americans are facing with this upcoming election. You don't have to endorse Bernie to be on the Hip Hop for Bernie Sanders podcast, you just have to be able to discuss and confront the many issues Bernie is confronting in his campaign, and today we do just that. Tune in, stream it, download it, share it, tell a friend to tell a friend about this podcast. We are also on Itunes, Stitcher and TuneIn. So many ways to listen, no excuse, just do it. **TO LISTEN OR DOWNLOAD SEE THE END OF THE SHOW DESCRIPTION!** On this masters of hardcore event we have: Bun B joins us for a feature-length interview to discuss his career as a lecturer of Humanities, Hip Hop and Religion. Far from the crack tales and street rap braggadocio that his artistic persona may suggest, this interview takes the listener on a deep journey into the reasons why Bun B devotes his daily life to teaching, including the conflict between his professional life as a rapper and his aspirations as educator. We also discuss his new album set for release later this year, including confirmed collaborations with DJ Premier and the interesting news that he is set to work once more with Jay Z. As refreshing as a spring breeze, taste a true veteran of the craft. Onyx are back and Onyx are mad. Sticky Fingaz bounces onto the show to deliver an in-depth and passionate interview regarding the groups new album "Cuzzo" set for release soon. As hardcore as you'd expect, Sticky Fingaz talks politics and conspiracy theories, citing their new video for the track "2012" as a sign of Onyx's attack on the political ideals of America, as well as drawing comparisons between the rap industry and the power structure of society. We also reflect upon the classic work of Onyx, discussing the creation of one of hip hop's hardest albums "Bacdafucup". Essential, edgy listening. Hieroglyphics are one of hip hop's most accessible and loved creative collectives. It was our pleasure to welcome onto the show Tajai, A Plus and Casual for a round table of discussion, spanning new releases from all Hiero members to deep conspiracy theory discussion, with Casual offering his detailed knowledge of chem trails and mind control techniques. We conclude with a candid freestyle cipher that has to be heard to be believed and round up what inevitably turned out to be one of Hieroglyphics best moments on our show. Blue Sky Black Death are one of hip hop's most ethereal and creative productive partnerships. They join us on this show to discuss their new album 'NOIR' which is set for release on April 26th. As well as allowing their fans the opportunity to meet the men behind the magic, BSBD also discuss future movie scoring, production work with Vinnie Paz, Jean Grae and the countless other artists that they would like to collaborate with. They also come bearing gifts and give away copies of their new album to some of our lucky live listeners. Has-Lo makes timeless, mood evoking music that has no parallels in terms of its sonic tragedy and somber vocal explorations. It was our gift to meet the mood maker himself and allow him to share with us the real meaning behind his life as a hip hop artist, including a breakdown of his superb latest album 'If I Don't Make It'. Admired by producers and hip hop fans worldwide, Has-Lo is as every bit as reflective and honest as his music suggests, making for a must hear interview. UK statue Cyrus Malachi steps proudly onto the show to talk about his latest album 'Ancient Future' and his relationship with the UK mainstream media, citing a distinct lack of support from the ever less powerful British radio outlets such as the BBC. We talk Duckdown, the success of No Cure Records and future Triple Darkness material including a full expansion of the group. There are many of people like us left in the UK and we are winning. Their new Prince Paul-fueled album is superb and the immense positivity that is the Hieroglyphics trademark, floods this interview as Taji breaks down all of the fresh projects for a glittering Hiero 2010. Such a blessing to talk with such a mogul of quality hip hop. Freddie Gibbs is set to blow in 2010, so it was a true pleasure to catch up with one of hip hop's most blatantly honest emcees.
