Sultan Melikşah, İsfahan'dan dönerken bir köyde konaklar. Adamlarından bir grup, ortalıkta dolaşan bir ineği kesip yerler. İneğin sahibi, onun sütüyle yetimlere bakan yaşlı bir kadındır. Kadın, sultanın geçeceği Zend-Rûd köprüsüne gider ve Melikşah'ın karşısına çıkar: “Ey Alparslan'ın oğlu, eğer ki benim hakkımı Zend-Rûd köprüsü üzerinde eda etmezsen, Allâh'ın celâline yemin olsun sırat köprüsü üzerinde senden hakkımı almadan sana karşı beslediğim kinden vazgeçmeyeceğim. Bu iki köprüden hangisini seçeceğini iyi düşün!” Yaşlı kadının bu derin sözleri, Melikşah'ın içine işledi, içi sızladı, o sözlerin heybetine kapıldı. Daha sonra kadına şöyle dedi: “Aman, ey benim annem, benim diğer köprüde cevap verecek takatim yoktur. Sana kim zulmetmişse söyle, senin hakkını ondan alayım.” Yaşlı kadın: “Bana zulmeden sensin, zira senin adamların yaptıkları her şeyi, senden aldıkları yetki ve kuvvete dayanarak yaparlar ve bundan sen sorumlusun, dolayısıyla bu da senin gafletindendir.” diyerek durumu anlattı. Melikşah derhal en helâl olanlarından yetmiş ineğin ona verilmesini emrettiği gibi bu suçu işleyen adamlarını da iyice cezalandırdı. Bir süre sonra da fâni dünyadan bâki dünyaya göç etti. Yaşlı kadın Melikşah'ın kendisine ikramda bulunmasından dolayı abdest alarak kıldığı iki rekat namazının sonunda yüzünü toprağa sürdü ve gözyaşı dökerek şöyle bir duâ etti: “Ey Allah'ım, Alparslan'ın oğlu, kendi mütevazılığıyla benim hakkımda hem adaleti yerine getirdi ve hem faziletli davrandı. Sen ekremü'l-ekremînsin, ona fazilet ver.” Daha sonra Melikşah'ın adamlarından birisi Melikşah'ı rüyasında gördüğünde ona şöyle sormuş: “Allâhü Teâlâ sana nasıl davrandı?” O şöyle cevap vermiş: “Eğer ki Zend-Rûd üzerinde hakkını isteyen o yaşlı kadının duâları olmasaydı, Alparslan'ın oğlu ebedî şekâvette rezil ve perişan durumda kalmış olacaktı!”(Basından Derleme)

GM Melik Khachiyan is a top player and former chess Olympian. He is also a trainer who has taught many future GMs and has coached the US Women's national team for many years. Despite his many successes, Melik had never won a US Championship of his own…until this year. In 2023, Melik beat out many higher-rated U.S. legends to comfortably win the U.S. Senior Championship! In our conversation, Melik takes us behind the scenes of the games and opening preparation, and his training regimen during the weeks leading up to the tournament. Melik thinks that he was propelled to victory by a couple of decisions in particular: 1) a focus on physical fitness and 2) his staying active in competitive chess. Melik always has lots of chess knowledge to impart, but his recent successes highlight the importance of perseverance, both at and away from the board. And of course, as GM Levon Aronian's childhood coach, and a former student of World Champion Tigran Petrosian, Melik always has a few stories to share. Dr. Melik Demirel is a Professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics at The Pennsylvania State University. Melik is fascinated by complexity in living and nonliving systems. He works at the intersection of biology, materials science, and computational science to understand whether patterns in living and nonliving systems follow mathematical and statistical rules, to determine the underlying physical basis of these patterns, and identify relevant mechanisms. He likes listening to music to engage the creative aspects of his mind. Some of his favorites are composers like Beethoven and Rachmaninov. Melik's wife plays piano, and his son plays piano and cello, so music is a big part of their lives. Malik received is B.S. and M.S. in Engineering from Boğaziçi University in Turkey and was awarded his PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. Afterwards, Melik conducted postdoctoral research at Los Alamos National Laboratory and was awarded an Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship in Molecular Biology at the Max Planck Institute in Gottingen, Germany. He accepted a faculty position at Penn State in 2003. Melik was a recipient of the Young Investigator Award from the Office of Naval Research within the Department of Defense, was selected as a Wyss Institute Visiting Scholar at Harvard University, and was awarded the Outstanding Research Award from Penn State, among other honors during his career. In this episode, he tells us about his experiences in life and science.
