Nick Nicely in conversation with David Eastaugh https://nicknicely1.bandcamp.com/track/or-a-brockley-afternoon English singer-songwriter who records psychedelic and electronic music. He is best known for his 1982 single "Hilly Fields (1892)". Nicely released only one other record in the early 1980s, the single "D.C.T. Dreams", before retreating from the music industry. The influence of "Hilly Fields" has been noted on Bevis Frond, Robyn Hitchcock, Robert Wyatt, and XTC's psychedelic alter egos the Dukes of Stratosphear, as well as the hypnagogic pop movement of the 2000s. In September 2014, Lo Records released Nicely's second full-length album, Space of a Second. A third Nick Nicely album, Sleep Safari, was released on 26 September 2017 through Tapete Records. In 2018, "Hilly Fields" appeared in the Timothee Chalamont film Hot Summer Nights. From the start of 2018 Nicely has been working on live performances accompanied by the musician Bug Lover and generating new versions of old tracks and adding visuals. First came secret gigs in Frappant (February and April) in Hamburg, then on 14 June 2018 at the Electric Ballroom in London supporting John Maus, followed by a December show in Moscow and then a US East coast tour again with Maus in 2019.

When Inspiration Strikes with Colin Moulding (XTC, The Dukes of Stratosphear, TC&I)

In South West England, in a town called Swindon, a group of disaffected youth would come together in the early 70s and create a body of songs over the next few decades whose indelible melodies and incisive lyrics would root themselves in your brain and never leave. Today's guest, Colin Moulding, shook off XTC's early affection for dissonance and composed their first breakthrough hit, “Making Plans for Nigel” - instantly becoming a worthy creative foil for the band's primary singer and songwriter, Andy Partridge. Colin's bass lines alone - serpentine, song-friendly but always memorable - would qualify him for the four string pantheon, but the fact that he has also crafted and sang some of the band's best-loved tunes makes him a unique triple threat.  Speaking with us from his garden shed studio, Colin opines on everything from the band's circuitous route from touring act to studio wizards, their adventures with some of rock's best-known knob twiddlers, and his process for letting good musical ideas wash over him vs. forcing them out. Bassist Colin Moulding wrote, played on and sang some of the XTC's greatest songs, including the breakthrough singles “Life Begins at the Hop” and “Making Plans for Nigel” plus “Ten Feet Tall,” “Generals and Majors,” “Runaways,” “Ball and Chain,” “Wonderland” … and those are just in the period covered in Pt. 1 of this fun, insightful conversation. Speaking from his home outside Swindon, England, Moulding tells of his musical beginnings; his and the band's evolutionary leap when guitarist Dave Gregory joined for Drums and Wires; the weird vibes as Moulding, and not primary singer-songwriter Andy Partridge, was writing the band's early hits; his reaction to the abrupt end of XTC's touring days; the jaw-dropping moment when drummer Terry Chambers quit; the joyous psychedelic side project, the Dukes of Stratosphear; and that time David Gilmour asked him to replace Roger Waters in Pink Floyd.

XTC Legendary Guitarist Talks Remix Of Classic Album, "The Big Express"#xtc #guitarist #classicalbum #remixalbum #thebigexpress “‘The Big Express' is the closest we ever came to recording a ‘concept' album. It's full of Swindon and deep seams of life there, that run through myself, Colin, and Dave, (Terry too of course). It's populated by members of our families, our hopes and dreams. The things we wished for, or feared, a stew of memories.” – Andy Partridge – excerpted from the book “Popartery”, 2023XTC's seventh album, “The Big Express” was virtually ignored on release, much as its immediate predecessor “Mummer” had been. If “Mummer” was XTC's quiet album, this was its polar opposite: bright, brash, noisy – even cluttered on occasion if the song demanded it – as it became a concept album of sorts, a partly autobiographical reflection on growing up in an industrial town, Swindon, with its history of engineering and railway accomplishments.Perhaps in keeping with that tradition of technical innovation, the album also made extensive use of (at the time) new technology with Linn-Drum programming (alongside drummer Peter Phipps), E-mu Emulator and other synths claiming space among the more traditional guitars, bass and drums mix under-pinning the vocals. This technology was juxtaposed with technology of a slightly earlier pop/rock era as phasing, backwards tapes and the inclusion of a mellotron hinted at a psychedelic influence that would move more center-stage with the band's next project – “The Dukes of Stratosphear”.With XTC no longer touring, the sound radically different to any previous XTC album, in a musical climate where the upper end of the charts reflected national radio, producing the most mainstream result for years: Lionel Richie, Sade, Spandau Ballet, Howard Jones, Tina Turner, Queen – Frank Sinatra's final solo studio album… the space for a metallic, post-punk concept album about growing up amidst the ghosts of Swindon's industrial heritage proved non-existent.Purchase: https://burningshed.com/xtc_the-big-express_cd_blu-rayFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/dave.gregory.520/ Thanks for tuning in, please be sure to click that subscribe button and give this a thumbs up!!Email: thevibesbroadcast@gmail.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/listen_to_the_vibes_/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thevibesbroadcastnetworkLinktree: https://linktr.ee/the_vibes_broadcastTikTok: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMeuTVRv2/Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheVibesBrdcstTruth: https://truthsocial.com/@KoyoteFor all our social media and other links, go to: Linktree: https://linktr.ee/the_vibes_broadcastPlease subscribe, like, and share!

It's time for a psychedelic podcast extravaganza, five years and two recordings in the making! The album Chips from the Chocolate Fireball by XTC's alter-egos the Dukes of Stratosphear was supposed to be our fifth episode, but technical difficulties turned the episode into a splendid cream bun. But Rich, Ben, and Mike are finally back for a second round discussing a collection that perhaps isn't XTC's definitive artistic achievement, but it's possibly the most pure fun you can have in their discography. Artistically adrift in the mid-'80s, the band adopted goofy pseudonyms and recorded a loving tribute to the '60s music of their youth, produced by psychedelic engineering wizard John Leckie. If you enjoy Pink Floyd, the Byrds, the Small Faces, the Kinks, the Yardbirds, and especially the Beatles – which you most likely do, because you're listening to this podcast – you owe it to yourself to take a bike ride to the moon with the Dukes.Cohosts: Rich Bunnell, Ben Marlin, Mike DeFabioComplete show notes: https://discordpod.com/listen/130-the-dukes-of-stratosphear-chips-from-the-chocolate-fireball-1987Discord & Rhyme's merch store: http://tee.pub/lic/discordpodSupport the podcast! https://www.patreon.com/discordpod

“The Hardest Battle” Talking to Colin Moulding is no battle at all. In fact, the XTC co-frontman and bassist is one of our favorite guests and we're thrilled to have him back on the show. We're also thrilled that the occasion of his return is to promote his new single “The Hardest Battle.” A swirling pop gem that's filled with layered pop melodies, “The Hardest Battle” is one of the catchiest songs of the year. Moulding was on the show when he and former XTC drummer Terry Chambers under the TC&I banner put out their Great Aspirations EP, but this new track is Moulding's first foray as a solo artist. And what a foray it is. As the bassist and co-frontman of XTC, Moulding played on 14 of the legendary Swindon band's albums, including White Noise, Skylarking, Drums and Wires and Oranges and Lemons. And if it every comes up at parties, an interesting fact is that Moulding wrote the band's first three charing singles. Over the course of his career he's collaborated with everyone from Sam Phillips to Anton Barbeau and the fact of the matter is, he's a great musician and he's a fascinating guy. We're lucky to have him as a friend of the podcast. In this conversation Colin talks to us about his songwriting process, his brief return to live music and the status of his current relationship with Andy Partridge Order Colin's new EP here: https://burningshed.com/store/colin-moulding_store/colin-moulding_the-hardest-battle_cd www.alexgreenonline.com www.bombshellradio.com Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast

Hello again, ye faithful, and welcome to another year of outstanding conversations about geek culture here at Geeks Explain It All. To get the new year started off in style we are proud to present a follow up to our most popular episode ever, The Dr. Who episode! When we last left our intrepid podcasters, Stratosphear had tentatively stuck his big tow in the deep pool of the Whovian universe. Now, most excellent study that he is, he now does a synchronized cannonball with D-Dub into the deep end An in-depth discussion of ALL the doctors follows. Is this the end of the discussion? Hardly!!! We ask you, the fans, to do two things: 1). Check out the episode at these coordinates. 2). Contact us at geeksexplainitall@gmail.com or feedback@geeksexplainitall. 3). Give us feedback and ratings at iTunes! Let us know what you would like us to do for future shows, and whether we should attempt an ongiong Dr. Who show! We can do it, but we won't unless we've got your support! P.S. Tune in again next time, when we will be discussing the evolution of Batman throught the years, and through the media! P.P.S. We apologize for the difficulties that were experienced with our 49th episode about Xmas music. Rest assured we are trying hard to correct this and it will be posted at some point in the future. So it's come to this:Anyone that knows ANYTHING about D-Dub and Stratosphear knows that we are Trekkers from WAY back. So why did we wait until the 8th episode to discuss it? Well, good things are worth waiitng for, and this episode is definitely a good thing. We have an in-depth discussion of the history of the franchise, along with our ideas for a possible reboot of the TV franchise(since the movie reboot did phenomenally well). What are those ideas, you may very well ask? Well, you'll just have to discover for yourself here. I am confident our thoughts will amaze and delight you(after all, they amazed and delighted us!). Our topic for next week will be Superhero Smackdown: Who would win? We will be discussing the theoretical outcomes of conflicts between Superman Vs. Hulk, Batman vs. Daredevil, and others. Do you have an imaginary battle between your favorite comic heroes? Let us know at geeksexplainitall@gmail.com and we'll mention it on the show!
