This Lecture continues the Caribbean Thought Lecture Series exploring the challenge of Caribbean Development but now going beyond the external to the internal. Corruption has significantly held back Jamaica and the Caribbean as much as the IMF or structural adjustment has placed conditionalities that have constricted the growth. Nevertheless, the problem was complex and compounded by several factors in which the locals also played a role. The #caribbean has had tremendous investments over the years but corrupt figures have squandered or mismanaged the funds leading to missed opportunities. This lecture discusses this issue and borrows data from #transparencyinternational https://www.transparency.org/en/what-is-corruption, and Dr. Trevor Monroe's and the #docu-filmnationalintegrityagency #nia, about the cost of corruption https://youtu.be/PEZnDCMvjO8?si=d38c17mzF97rkIGb. On this Juneteenth, we reflect on and commemorate the Emancipation Proclamation in the United States. Reverend Renaldo McKenzie opened the lecture by acknowledging the significance of this day and shared a post emphasizing the importance of reflecting on the emancipation of slavery, which led to universal suffrage and human rights in the US, on this Juneteenth. He also drew attention to the ongoing struggle for these same rights in Haiti and urged the audience to sign the petition for Haiti, advocating for a Haitian-led solution against foreign interference. The lecture commenced with a focus on the Urban Indian Heritage Society (UIHS) and their contribution to the discussion of lineage and heritage, which are central topics in Caribbean Thought. The concept of identity holds immense importance in this field of study, considering the Caribbean region's diverse amalgamation of races and ethnicities. Reverend McKenzie highlighted that the Caribbean itself is a construct of the 20th century, and as we venture into the 21st century, he raised the question of how we can redefine and reconstruct ourselves as a people. Tracing the historical roots of the Caribbean presents a challenge, and Reverend McKenzie posed the question of where to begin: with the Arawaks or the Africans? Acknowledging that the Caribbean is an invention, he recognized the arrival of Europeans and African slaves as a transformative event that brought about significant demographic changes in the region. The population of Africans eventually surpassed that of Europeans and the indigenous peoples. Reverend McKenzie then redirected the audience's attention to the UIHS and their presentation on lineage and heritage. The core issue at hand was the reclamation of one's heritage, which forms an integral part of Caribbean Theology and Caribbean Thought as a whole. Emphasizing the importance of heritage and the development of individual identities, he reiterated that the Caribbean, while shaped by colonialism and capitalism, also possesses wealth and richness through its diverse cultural heritage. Caribbean Theology, as discussed in the lecture, centers around restoration, which can be achieved by preserving and reclaiming one's identity. Reverend McKenzie highlighted how the preservation of heritage played a crucial role in Israel's reclamation of their property, as they were able to trace their lineage effectively. Conversely, he lamented that the systematic strategy of misclassifying and erasing a people's heritage has corrupted Caribbean identities over time. However, he expressed optimism as the UIHS is currently engaged in new research based on forensics and epidemiological studies to uncover and rectify these misclassifications. The presentation by the UIHS would shed light on their ongoing work regarding lineage and heritage, specifically focusing on Jamaican and Caribbean genealogy. The Reverend also mentioned that the students would have the opportunity to share their own roots based on their assignments, allowing them to explore and connect with their individual heritages. In conclusion, the opening of the lecture at Jamaica Theological Seminary provided a platform for Reverend Renaldo McKenzie to set the stage for a discussion on Caribbean Thought, identity, and heritage. The inclusion of the UIHS and their research on lineage and heritage further enriched the dialogue, highlighting the importance of reclaiming and preserving one's cultural identity as a means of restoration and empowerment within the Caribbean context. Introduction: In a thought-provoking lecture at Jamaica Theological Seminary in Caribbean Thought, the exploration of Caribbean history from a subaltern perspective took center stage. The aim was to trace and revisit the currents and works that have shaped the Caribbean region since the seminal publication of "Arawaks to Africans" by Robert Green and S. Hamber in 1979. This lecture not only presented an outline of influential Caribbean works and thinkers but also delved into their influences, emphasizing the profound impact they have had on the development of Caribbean life, philosophy, thought, and the interpretation of its history. Questioning Narratives: Greenwood's Accounts and European Influence The lecture began by questioning the accounts put forth by Robert Green in "Arawaks to Africans." Greenwood's narrative, which seemingly portrays the Taino people as disconnected from Africans and their presence in the Caribbean, raised concerns about the influence of European history and philosophy on his interpretation of history. It challenged the notion that the Taino people had been completely wiped out and dismissed any connection they might have had with Africans. A Skeptical Outlook and Critical Re-examination: The lecture urged attendees to critically examine Greenwood's accounts and approach them with a skeptical mindset. It emphasized the need to reassess our understanding of history to reinvent ourselves in the 21st century. By challenging prevailing narratives, we can uncover hidden connections, untold stories, and alternative perspectives that offer a more comprehensive understanding of Caribbean history and its people. Influential Caribbean Works and Thinkers: The lecture also provided an illuminating list of Caribbean works and thinkers whose contributions have shaped the region and influenced its trajectory. By exploring these influential voices, the lecture aimed to shed light on the rich intellectual heritage that has been instrumental in defining Caribbean life, philosophy, thought, and historical interpretation. The expanded information about their influences served as a testament to their enduring impact and relevance. The Importance of Reconnecting with History: Revisiting Caribbean history from a subaltern perspective is vital for the Caribbean community's self-reinvention and progress. By reevaluating and critically analyzing the narratives that have shaped our understanding of the past, we can challenge dominant paradigms and empower marginalized voices. Only through this reconnection with history can we forge a stronger, more inclusive identity that embraces the complexities of our shared heritage. Conclusion: The lecture on the subaltern view of Caribbean history provided a compelling platform to reexamine the region's past. By critically questioning established narratives, particularly those influenced by European history and philosophy, attendees were encouraged to challenge prevailing assumptions and explore alternative perspectives. The outlined list of influential Caribbean works and thinkers showcased the profound impact these voices have had on shaping Caribbean life, philosophy, thought, and historical interpretation. Ultimately, this lecture highlighted the importance of critically reevaluating our history to reinvent ourselves in the 21st century and forge a more inclusive and nuanced understanding of the Caribbean's rich cultural tapestry. Deconstructing History and Philosophy: Exploring Caribbean Thought In this lecture, the speaker embarks on a journey of critical thinking and analysis, aiming to deconstruct history and philosophy within the context of the subaltern. The focus of the lecture is the course on Caribbean Thought, which involves delving into various concepts, questions, and issues related to the Caribbean region. The lecture highlights the exploration of influential thinkers such as C.L.R James, whose ideas have significantly shaped Caribbean intellectual discourse. Through critical examination, the lecture seeks to unpack the complexities of Caribbean thought and its relevance in understanding the region's history, culture, and social dynamics. One significant topic addressed in the lecture is the Haitian Crisis, a pivotal moment in Caribbean history. The lecture investigates the underlying factors that led to the crisis and examines the motivations behind the petitio for Haiti (petition for Haiti), shedding light on the socio-political climate of the time and its implications. The lecture serves as a starting point for engaging in critical dialogue, encouraging students to actively participate in brainstorming sessions. It prompts students to explore a range of concepts, raise thought-provoking questions, and analyze the work of influential Caribbean intellectuals. Through this process, students are encouraged to develop their critical thinking skills and gain a deeper understanding of the complexities of Caribbean thought. Overall, this lecture acts as a gateway to the course on Caribbean Thought, setting the stage for a comprehensive exploration of the region's intellectual history, philosophy, and the diverse perspectives that have shaped its development. In this Episode we talk to Ira Raja, Professor of English at the University of Delhi and she held the Potsdam Postcolonial Chair for Global Modernities in the 2022 Summer Semester. The conversation centres on her article titled, “Nation and Ageing: Mother India's Mutable Body”, from The Handbook to Ageing, forthcoming from Bloomsbury. We start from the ways in which imaginaries of the nation are often constructed through motherly figures, and how in India, certain mothers, such as Dalit and Muslim mothers, cannot be abstracted to stand in for the nation. Ira then talks about the ambivalence inherent in the figure of the ageing mother as either a token of postcolonial decline, or in the reading she offers, as having great potential in signalling a nation more porous and open to change, crucial in a time of rampant Hindutva.
