Friends! Comrades! Welcome to another episode of the Radio Reversal podcast, continuing our series on Disaster, Crisis & Collective Futures. If you haven't already listened to the first couple of episodes in this series - never fear! You can jump in fresh here, or head back and listen to Episode 12 - After the Flood & Episode 13 - Disaster Communism with Nick Southall. In these episodes, we chatted about weather events like Cyclone Alfred & what happens during “disasters”: how the parameters of political possibility shift, sometimes incrementally, and sometimes all at once. We talked about two very different expressions of these political ruptures: “disaster capitalism,” where corporations and the state use these events as opportunities to expand state and corporate power and to find new frontiers of capitalist exploitation, and “disaster communism,” in which communities self-organise to support one another, forge networks of mutual aid and care, and build a genuinely radical sense of “class power.”This week, Nat, Jonno & I (Anna) decided to focus a bit more on the way that these dynamics operate in the specific conditions of settler colonialism, especially here in so-called australia. We're engaging with these topics as settlers, living uninvited on unceded Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander lands, and this is perhaps part of why we are so interested in the way that crises operate as key moments in which settlers are brought into new forms of colonial complicity. In particular, we are digging into a concept that we've been talking about for a few years now: the idea of “crisis colonialism.” We use this as a shorthand way to think about how settler colonial states use periods of crisis - economic depressions, world wars, ecological disasters - as fuel for settler colonial nation-building. In listening back to and editing this week's episode, I realised (largely thanks to a generative conversation with Dr. Jamal Nabulsi, whose incendiary and vital work you can find here and here) that a lot of what we're thinking about in this episode is affect - how people feel during crises, and how those collective emotions are operationalised and weaponised for a variety of political projects. This is a key part of both “disaster capitalism” and “disaster communism,” which we dig into in more detail at the beginning of this episode. But affect is also an important part of our analysis of “crisis colonialism,” and especially the way that settler colonies use moments of crisis to manufacture and secure settler consent for colonial governance through a rotating set of strategies, ranging from fear-based moral panics through to the construction of ideas of “mateship” and community. So in this week's episode, we're looking closer at these dynamics. How exactly do settler colonial states take advantage of periods of crisis? How do these moments become repurposed as fuel for nation-building? How does “securitisation” and policing fit into this process? And as settlers who are engaged in communities of struggle and committed to disrupting settler colonialism… how can we ensure that our collective efforts in these moments don't become fuel for the colonial project that caused the crisis in the first place? This is a big, juicy episode, which means that we talk about (or reference) a bunch of important scholarship that helps us to understand the origins of colonial racial capitalism and the “disaster” horizon of the present. In kicking off with some belated “definitional work,” as Nat puts it, we start by sketching out a working understanding of “disaster capitalism.” We continue our chat about Naomi Klein's 2007 “The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism and her formative analysis of the way that corporations and states alike use periods of disaster, or “shocks,” to cultivate new “frontiers” to exploit. Klein talks about a number of examples of this phenomenon: from the ways that the destructive impacts of “natural disasters” like the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami can be used to create the conditions for massive land grabs and accelerated privatisation and development under the guise of “reconstruction”; through to the construction of an entire fear-based industry of “homeland security” after the 9/11 terror attacks in the US. We follow this with a very brief chat about Antony Loewenstein's (2015) Disaster Capitalism: Making a Killing out of Catastrophe, where he expands and updates Klein's analysis to trace the diverse ways that disasters have become “big business,” looking at - as he puts it - the way that “companies cash in on organized misery in a hidden world of privatized detention centers, militarized private security, aid profiteering, and destructive mining.” A thread that we allude to in the podcast but don't extend is that these works are both interested in the affective impact of disasters on populations: the way that the confusion and “shock” of these events can be quickly turned into fear and suspicion which takes root within the established furrows of colonialism, racism and white supremacy; and which forms the basis of a new economy of privatised security, mass incarceration, and surveillance. Competing against this economy of fear, however, is a counter-economy of generosity, care and radical love that also takes root during disasters. We briefly return to Nick Southall's brilliant account of “disaster communism,” discussed at length in last week's show. We then turn our attention to the “permanent crisis” of settler colonialism, a phrase drawn from Robin D G Kelley's 2017 piece “Crisis: Danger, Opportunity & The Unknown,” in which he describes how colonial racial capitalism “produces something akin to a permanent state of crisis” because it is “built on fictions that must be constantly shored up, not for its victims but for those who stand to benefit.” We trace these contradictory fictions all the way back to the emergence of penal colonialism as a response to the crisis of prison overcrowding in Europe, drawing on the work of Michel Foucault, Cedric Robinson, Walter Rodney and Sylvia Federici to emphasise that penal colonialism was both a form of, and a factory for, crisis-management techniques. Finally, we reflect on the many, violent fictions that have been required to enable and sustain the settler colonial project in so-called australia. We draw here on the incredible body of work by First Nations scholars, including Mununjahli & South Sea Islander scholar Chelsea Watego, Darumbal and South Sea Islander scholar and journalist Amy McQuire, Amangu Yamatji theorist Crystal McKinnon, Yuin scholar and criminologist Amanda Porter, Meintagk & Tanganekald scholar Irene Watson, Gumbaynggirr historian Gary Foley and Goenpul scholar Aileen Moreton-Robinson (among many others!) to understand the foundational contradictions of settler colonialism, and why they create the conditions of “permanent crisis” here in so-called australia.From here, I draw out a point that I explore in my PhD thesis (supervised by Chelsea Watego, David Singh, Liz Strakosch & Alissa Macoun), in which I argued that Indigenous peoples' unceded sovereignty and persistent resistance to colonisation represents a foundational and irresolvable contradiction for settler colonial states, which renders them constantly on the precipice of political crisis. This foundational crisis leads settler colonial states to develop robust and sophisticated techniques of crisis-management, ranging from repressive apparatus of policing, prisons, surveillance and punitive systems of state control; through to piecemeal liberal concessions, reforms, and promises of “inclusion.” So what does this mean for how we approach the coming storm? We end this episode with some reflections on how we can build our collective ability to resist colonial complicity: how to refuse the promise of liberal reform; how to reject all attempts to narrow our care, grief and rage to those deemed “grievable” by the colonial state; and how we might work to align ourselves instead with everyone, everywhere, who is fighting to dismantle the colonial capitalist death machinery that causes the “permanent crisis” of the present. The question may arise, as it relates to the course and what we are contending for, why are we focussed on Haiti? Every time I teach the course the focus is different, yet the conclusions are almost identical. This semester focuses on Haiti, as a case study when studying the Caribbean position in the world today and the currents that have led to its invention as we contend for a reinvented Caribbean in the 21st century. The Lecture begins by analyzing the course and why we are focussing on Haiti by highlighting the idea behind the textbook which is a case study about Jamaica speaking about the Caribbean and global south experience in a post-colonial post-independent world. The Professor uses this to support the ways we are approaching the course. Much like the film Life and Debt a documentary film about Jamaica's socio-political-economic history based on a book about Antigua entitled "A Small Place". The Professor makes the point how each Caribbean experience from colonization to independence and to now has followed similar paths in relation to their position in the world and the international strategies that have come to formulate the Caribbean as an invention. Rev. Renaldo surveys Caribbean economic history drawing on several theorists from the Caribbean and the post-colonial such as Ramesh Ramsarwan, Rex Nettleford, Nelson and Nelson, C.L. R. James, Walter Rodney, and his own work, Neoliberalism book 1. The Lecture also featured a special guest Lecturer, Fr. Hyvenson Josephs, a Haitian American originally from Haiti who is an episcopal Priest living in Florida. He provided the latest update on Haiti indicating that Haitians are demanding a Haitian-led solution that follows the constitution of Haiti. However, Dr. Henry is exiled but remains as the Installed PM by the foreign gang of four - US, Germany, France, and Canada. Further, it was revealed that Canada is training a small group of Jamaican military to go to Haiti to help with security. The Lecture was powerful and ended with Rev. Renaldo McKenzie reviewing an article for the Jamaica Gleaner on the importance of exploring Attitudes Toward Afro-Caribbean Beliefs and Traditions and problematizing the immigration issue. Walter Rodney was a historian, political activist, and academic. Born in 1942 in Georgetown Guyana, Rodney's research focused on slavery and colonial imperialism in Africa and the Caribbean. His notable works include How Europe Underdeveloped Africa, first published in 1972. Rodney was assassinated in Georgetown, his home city, in 1980 at the age of 38. In this episode, we produced Walter Rodney's lecture on “Crisis in the Periphery: Africa and the Caribbean.”

At once a history for understanding fascism and a handbook for organizing against, The Black Antifascist Tradition: Fighting Back from Anti-Lynching to Abolition (Haymarket Books, 2024) is an essential book for understanding our present moment and the challenges ahead. From London to the Caribbean, from Ethiopia to Harlem, from Black Lives Matter to abolition, Black radicals and writers have long understood fascism as a threat to the survival of Black people around the world—and to everyone. In The Black Antifascist Tradition, scholar-activists Jeanelle K. Hope and Bill Mullen show how generations of Black activists and intellectuals—from Ida B. Wells in the fight against lynching, to Angela Y. Davis in the fight against the prison-industrial complex—have stood within a tradition of Black Antifascism. As Davis once observed, pointing to the importance of anti-Black racism in the development of facism as an ideology, Black people have been “the first and most deeply injured victims of fascism.” Indeed, the experience of living under and resisting racial capitalism has often made Black radicals aware of the potential for fascism to take hold long before others understood this danger. The book explores the powerful ideas and activism of Paul Robeson, Mary McLeod Bethune, Claudia Jones, W. E. B. Du Bois, Frantz Fanon, Aime Cesaire, and Walter Rodney, as well as that of the Civil Rights Congress, the Black Liberation Army, and the We Charge Genocide movement, among others. In shining a light on fascism and anti-Blackness, Hope and Mullen argue, the writers and organizers featured in this book have also developed urgent tools and strategies for overcoming it. It is thinking about thinking and rethinking what was previously thought. It promotes thinking around the periphery as against the center, transcends pragmatism, and considers Eurocentric and Afrocentric understanding of truths to digress from ethnocentrism. This form of thinking operates within these domains, aiming for specific goals. It can be likened to iconoclastic thinking, as seen when Plato shifted from the Greek notion of the warrior king to the philosopher king, prompting a reevaluation of the hero archetype. Furthermore, critical thinking within these disciplines reimagines individuals through the lens of critical race theory. Critical thinking is a widely accepted educational objective characterized by careful, goal-directed thought. While its definition may vary, it generally involves considering beliefs and knowledge critically, evaluating evidence, and drawing reasoned conclusions. John Dewey, an early advocate, described it as active, persistent consideration of beliefs in light of supporting evidence and potential findings. Over time, standardized tests have been developed to assess critical thinking abilities, with educational interventions shown to enhance them through methods like dialogue and mentoring (Critical Thinking (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/cr.... The term 'critical thinking' as an educational objective traces back to the American philosopher John Dewey (1910), who often referred to it as 'reflective thinking'. Dewey defined it as the active, persistent, and meticulous examination of any belief or purported form of knowledge in light of the supporting evidence and the potential conclusions it leads to. He associated this habit of examination with a scientific mindset. Historically, critical thinking gained prominence in the 1930s through initiatives like the Eight-Year Study of the Progressive Education Association, which integrated critical thinking into educational goals. Bloom's taxonomy of cognitive objectives further incorporated critical thinking abilities. This is a conversation about Andaiye who was born 81 years ago today on September 11th 1942. For this discussion we speak with Alissa Trotz, who like Andaiye was born in Guyana. Alissa teaches in Women and Gender Studies and Caribbean Studies at the University of Toronto. For the last 15 years she has edited In the Diaspora, a weekly newspaper column in a Guyanese daily newspaper, the Stabroek News. Alissa has worked with Red Thread, the women's organization co-founded by Andaiye, for over two and a half decades. She is the editor of the book we discuss today, The Point is to Change the World: Selected Writings of Andaiye published by Pluto Press. The book also has a recently translated Portuguese version, published by Edition Funilaria in Brazil. Andaiye was one of the Caribbean's most important political voices. She was a radical activist, thinker, and comrade of Walter Rodney. Through essays, speeches, letters and journal entries, Andaiye's thinking on the intersections of gender, race, class and power are profoundly articulated, Caribbean histories emerge, and stories from a life lived at the barricades are revealed. We learn about the early years of the Working People's Alliance, the meaning and impact of the murder of Walter Rodney and the fall of the Grenada Revolution. Throughout, we bear witness to Andaiye's acute understanding of politics rooted in communities and the daily lives of so-called ordinary people. We discuss various writings from this collection. Touching on concepts like negation and self-negation, self-criticism as a political method, Andaiye's concept of the conspiracy of mutual caring, some of her reflections on her time with Walter Rodney in the Working People's Alliance, and a good deal discussing Andaiye's thought around the importance of autonomy in organizing. There are also some discussions of the importance of cross-racial organizing in a context like Guyana with a working class politically divided along racial lines. Alissa shares with us reflections on the work of Red Thread, in which again she and Andaiye both organized. We touch on work around wages for housework, social reproduction and care, and how Andaiye organized around many different issues from violence against women and children to her own battle with cancer. In this discussion we talk to CalvinJohn Smiley about his book Purgatory Citizenship: Reentry, Race, and Abolition, which examines how individuals returning to society navigate and negotiate this process with diminished legal rights and amplified social stigmas. CalvinJohn Smiley, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Sociology Department of Hunter College-City University of New York. He also has worked to abolish the death penalty, and currently volunteers at Rikers Island and Horizon Juvenile Center facilitating restorative justice programming. We talk to Smiley about his concept of purgatory citizenship, and understanding reentry as a verb rather than a noun. We talk through his application of Walter Rodney's analytical tools from How Europe Underdeveloped Africa to the history of Newark, NJ. Much of this conversation is centered on the experiences of folks returning from prison, and barriers presented by parole and probation processes, navigating housing, employment and many other visible and less visible hurdles. On our last show, a couple of weeks ago, we talked about Land Back with David Cobb — specifically, we discussed moving the idea of land back from a metaphor to a reality, by focusing on a specific case in northern California where the city of Eureka actually gave 200 acres of land back to its original stewards, the Wiyot tribe. On today's episode, we're going to continue the conversation, and, in a way, pull back from the specific policy examples of land back and look at it as an idea again, specifically, as a revolutionary ideological framework that exists as a part of Marxist thought, a continuation of Marxism-Leninism — what has been called decolonial Marxism. To do this, we've brought on Lakota activist and political educator Sungmanitu Bluebird. Sungmanitu grew up in both Detroit and on Pine Ridge reservation and is currently based in Michigan's upper peninsula. Sungmanitu's work synthesizes Marxism with Indigenous knowledge and decolonial Marxist theory and practice. They are a former member of the Red Nation, a mutual aid movement builder, and an organizer with the Chunka Luta Network, a project meant to push decolonial Marxism-Leninism as described by the Guyanese Marxist academic, writer, and educator, Walter Rodney. Prof. Renaldo McKenzie delivered a powerful final Lecture in Caribbean Thought that was climactic at Jamaica Theological Seminary, exploring Walter Rodney's Struggle for Democracy in Guyana exploring how this struggle for democracy and independence continues even today throughout postcolonial countries of the global south. Rev. McKenzie explained that Walter Rodney, a renowned historian and socialist from Guyana, was not only known for his academic work but also as a political leader. He was an active member of the Working People's Alliance (WPA) and a critic of the authoritarian Forbes Burnham dictatorship. Burnham, though claiming to be socialist, maintained a repressive regime in Guyana and had friendly ties with the United States. He held power through rigged elections and suppression of opposition parties and trade unions. Rodney, aware of the risks, chose to work within Guyana to bring about change. He was assassinated in 1980, drawing international condemnation from figures like Michael Manley, Maurice Bishop, and Fidel Castro. In his essay, written before his death, Rodney analyzed the nature of the Burnham dictatorship, exposing its corruption, incompetence, and tactics for consolidating power. He criticized the regime's personality cult and its attempts to appear as a democracy while suppressing fundamental rights. Renaldo raised and expounded on questions that Mr. Rodney seem to be answering in his Essay via Jacobin magazine: 1. Question: How can the working class challenge the Burnham dictatorship and assert its power? 2. Question: What is the significance of civil disobedience and non-cooperation in the struggle for liberation? 3. Question: How can national unity be achieved in Guyana, given its diverse racial and class divisions? 4. Question: What is the alternative to the Burnham dictatorship, and how can the people reclaim their rights and restore democracy? 5. Question: How can resistance be sustained against the violence and intimidation of the dictatorship? Prof. McKenzie concluded this section of the Lecture with a summary, "Rodney's essay explores essential questions related to working-class power, national unity, and the path towards liberation in Guyana. His answers highlight the historical lessons of collective labor actions, civil disobedience, and the need for a government of national unity as a clear alternative to the oppressive dictatorship. He calls for a united and determined effort to reclaim democracy and build a just and equitable society for all Guyanese." Part 2 of the Lecture: Afro-Caribbean Beliefs: Prof. McKenzie then shifts gears to explore Afro-Caribbean Beliefs in Jamaica and to discuss a study that the class will be embarking on to ascertain how Caribbean people's attitudes towards their Afro-Caribbean Beliefs are changing. Rev. McKenzie discussed Afro Caribbean Beliefs especially those in Jamaica: According to Rev. McKenzie, "in Jamaica, there has historically been a negative perception towards African and indigenous spiritual practices, religious beliefs, customs, and faiths that draw influences from Urban Indian Heritage or African traditions. If God is universal, can we contend for a theology of God that transcends culture? However, Kant said that "History is a result of the varieties of human natures and circumstances," and throughout history man has imposed an idea of God that caters to his privileges, context and goals. Muta Baruka said that God is a human creation, meaning that the way we understand God is the way human have determined that we see God, stroking human egos. Yet, Paul Tillich declared that God is man's ultimate concern and possess that internal drive which predisposes him to a reality of God that is deep which has always escaped him so that we live our lives pursuing the existence of God through worship, faith or some transcendental experience. Just as human drives lead him/her to contend with the truth of his own existence within multiple realities of time and space which extends beyond the world, he/she finds himself/herself in the outer space. Human beings are always working to discover something beyond themselves, either within or without and find themselves travelling as far as to the Moon in hopes of finding truth that extends from the limitations of life on earth or within his personal domains. Yet Descartes philosophizes that what we know for certain is not beyond the subjective. Nevertheless, Man has imposed a reality of God that is universal and objective in the hopes of advancing a life that places him or her above the rest. We say that life is about people and how they relate. Yet, life is what people make of it and human tendencies to promote self has created dynamics couched in the universal creation of a God that exceptionalizes his personal experiences and cultures and go as far as to discredit other ideas and perspectives of God that competes with his position and place in life. This has led to the Conquests and crusades and the destruction of cultures where some with a westernize theology of God created a New World in the eyes of their perspectives. The Europeans went to Africa and the Caribbean to Spread religion in the name of a God to spread religion, a particular way of life and to take away the prospects of others which they justify in that same faith thy have come to promote. Discrediting those who have found God for themselves. Walter Rodney wrote how Europe underdeveloped Africa, yet Europeans justify their efforts based in a Theology that is exceptional and one that promotes their cultures and ways over others. Was it not Balfour in Crowmer that said in English parliament in the 1600's that England knows what is best for Egypt and that if anything good came out of Egypt is a result of the English who brought religion to Africa as if what the Egyptians and Africans had were primitive or devilish. So, we speed forward today and question how our theology comes from a legacy that creates a way of life that limits any plausible resistance to domination and control for such was the strategy that led to the takeover. Using a religion from a particular space.... But Caribbean Theology critically re-examines the history of a theology that is devoid of our legacies outside of European experiences. In a recent book on the ongoing relevance of Walter Rodney's work, Karim F. Hirji notes that, “as with scores of progressive intellectuals and activists of the past, the prevailing ideology functions to relegate Rodney into the deepest, almost unreachable, ravines of memory. A person who was widely known is now a nonentity, a stranger to the youth in Africa and the Caribbean” and the U.S. Rodney's theoretical and practical contributions to the socialist movement warrant an ongoing engagement with his life story and major texts. Rodney's most recent, posthumously-published text, The Russian Revolution: A View from the Third World, offers an important perspective on the time period in which it was written and the internal position of the author. Rodney's family worked with Robin Kelley in taking Walter's extensive lecture notes on the Russian revolutionary era and forming them into a complete manuscript. This essay, which complements our new study guide on The Russian Revolution, offers a brief overview of Rodney's background historical context. Highlighting aspects of Rodney's individual life demonstrates that his commitments were not just the result of his own individual experiences and conclusions, but were part of and emerged from the revolutionary crisis ripping through the world at the time. To better comprehend A View from the Third World, we turn to Groundings with My Brothers, which Rodney produced as a relatively new professor in Jamaica. In that book, Rodney reflects on the dialectical pedagogy he developed to make his academic labor part of the global movement against capitalist imperialism, which he also called the white power structure. Big R, who was incarcerated in Indiana State Penitentiary in 1985 along with the Pendleton 2 talks about the events that led to the egregious political repression of John "Balagoon" Cole and Christopher "Naeem" Trotter. Each of our guests share details of the case and the campaign. In discussing the campaign we get into some basics of organizing, and building an organization or coalition around a campaign that has a fighting chance in the midwest. Also a discussion about how we politicize issues and activate people into action and struggle around an issue, rather than resting at the level of sympathy and caring. Beyond that there's an important discussion around building connection inside and out, and on the ethic of care, and defense and preservation that animates the Pendleton 2, which is not unique to them at all, but is absolutely noteworthy and admirable. In this episode Dylan Rodríguez returns to the podcast. Dylan Rodríguez is a teacher, scholar, organizer and collaborator who has maintained a day job as a Professor at the University of California-Riverside since 2001. His lifework focuses on liberationist, anticolonial, and abolitionist confrontations with the antiblack, colonial, and white supremacist violences that permeate the ongoing Civilization project. He was elected to serve as President of the American Studies Association in 2020-2021, and in 2020 was named to the inaugural class of Freedom Scholars. Since 2021, he has served as Co-Director of the Center for Ideas and Society. Since the late-1990s, Dylan has participated as a founding member of organizations like Critical Resistance, Abolition Collective, Critical Ethnic Studies Association, Cops Off Campus, Scholars for Social Justice, and the UCR Department of Black Study, among others. He is the author of three books, most recently White Reconstruction: Domestic Warfare and the Logics of Genocide (Fordham University Press, 2021), which won the 2022 Frantz Fanon Book Award from the Caribbean Philosophical Association. In January of 2021 we published an episode with Rodríguez on his most recent book White Reconstruction: Domestic Warfare and the Logics of Genocide. In that conversation along with many of the other themes and topics from that book, Rodriguez began to frame out some thoughts with us on counterinsurgency. This past fall on Black Agenda Report, Dylan published an interview with Roberto Sirvent entitled "Insurgency and Counterinsurgency." In this episode we pick up that conversation, talking about counterinsurgency as a totality, as a curriculum, and as epistemic. We get into various elements of what that means to Rodriguez, and about the composition of the counterinsurgent bloc. We also talk about how we recognize it, resist it and embrace beautiful revolutionary wildness. For this month our book for incarcerated readers is Walter Rodney's Decolonial Marxism. This is Lecture 5 of Caribbean Thought, a course at the Jamaica Theological Seminary Lectured by Rev. Renaldo C. McKenzie, Dated February 10, 2023. This is a continuation of week 4 and the Lecture series towards developing a Caribbean Thought Journal. The Lecture was quite powerful as usual. We continued from week 4, conceptualizing the course Caribbean Thought when we had asked, "what is Caribbean Thought, and who determines this?" This week we ask, why who determines this and why is it important for us to revisit the past. The lecture delved into this question by lifting up a current situation in the Caribbean - The Haitian Crisis - where The US and Canada is pressuring the Caribbean to intervene in Haiti on their behalf. We examine this issue in relation to the Caribbean socio-economic challenges which has defined present realities which imposes on cultural identity. We explored this within the context of our understanding of the Caribbean being part of the pan-African struggle for not just independence but economic prosperity that allows them to compete. When we go back in history, we explore situations where the Caribbean's inability to truly realize pan-African goals in light of strategy that continue to keep these peoples and countries down - Debt. We begin the class by revisiting the conclusion of the class: "...the Caribbean represents a people who have been disrupted, detached, displaced, hybridized and made into dependent capitalist states with some level of modernity to promote consumption within the neoliberal globalized world which is largely a consumer society." We then moved into Lecture 5 by exploring the course outline: Course Description: This course focuses on and explores the diverse currents of Caribbean Thought, which have influenced the development of Caribbean societies from colonialism to independence and beyond. In this episode Dr. Jesse Benjamin returns to the podcast. Like our previous conversation with Jesse we're connecting to talk about a recently released book by Walter Rodney, in this case it's Decolonial Marxism: Essays From The Pan-African Revolution, which is a previously unpublished collection of Rodney's essays on race, colonialism and Marxism. Jesse Benjamin is a scholar, activist, publisher, and board member for the Walter Rodney Foundation, and he is the co-editor of Decolonial Marxism. We talk about how Decolonial Marxism showcases Rodney's range as a theorist and a thinker, as an educator, and as an activist. This collection of essays across a range of topics really provides practical examples of what we think Rodney meant by the term “guerilla intellectual.” It also gives us a glimpse of how Rodney assessed some of the movements and key theorists and leaders of his lifetime, particularly with respect to anticolonial nationalists and socialists on the African continent. Jesse Benjamin offers insights into how he reads Rodney's work in these pieces with respect to pedagogy and epistemology. We also talk about the title Decolonial Marxism and how Rodney takes up the questions of the relevance of Marxism to African peoples and other peoples of the so-called Third World. Jesse also talks about the significance of many of Rodney's interventions in a range of areas and approaches that are really groundbreaking or, at the very least, would've been quite cutting edge during Rodney's lifetime. And all of us marvel at how relevant and insightful Rodney's contributions remain decades after his assassination. In this conversation we interview Steven Osuna to discuss his piece “Class Suicide: The Black Radical Tradition, Radical Scholarship, and the Neoliberal Turn” from the 2017 collection Futures of Black Radicalism. Steven Osuna is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at California State University, Long Beach. He is a scholar of racism and political economy; globalization, transnationalism, and immigration; and policing and criminalization. Steven was born and raised in Echo Park, Los Angeles and is a son of Mexican and Salvadoran working-class migrants. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Homies Unidos-Los Angeles and a member of the Philippines US Solidarity Organization (PUSO). In this episode Josh interviews Osuna, to discuss the role of the academic who sees their work as in solidarity with movements for the working class, anti-imperialist movements, and struggles for socialism and communism. Osuna talks about the concept of class suicide as put forth by Amilcar Cabral and additionally embodied in the theory and practice of figures like Frantz Fanon and Walter Rodney. Steven also talks about his own experiences as a student of Cedric Robinson. And Steven talks about Robinson's notion of the Black Radical Tradition alongside his own background and interest coming out of the Marxist tradition through learning about the El Salvadoran communist movement and also bringing an interest in liberation theology. Ultimately the conversation is concerned with how someone taking on a petty bourgeois position, and gaining access to the resources available in a place like a university can actually use that position and those resources in material solidarity with concrete working class struggles. Osuna does not mean this to be an abstraction, for him it means participating in working class, anti-imperialist movements and doing so by lending whatever labor those movements need rather than the position that might feel most comfortable to the petty bourgeois academic. In this episode we interview David Austin, and discuss his book Moving Against The System: The 1968 Congress of Black Writers and the Making of Global Consciousness. David Austin is the author of Fear of a Black Nation: Race, Sex, and Security in Sixties Montreal and Dread Poetry and Freedom: Linton Kwesi Johnson and the Unfinished Revolution. He has also produced radio documentaries for CBC Ideas on the life and work of both CLR James and Frantz Fanon. A former youth worker and community organizer, he currently teaches in the Humanities, Philosophy and Religion Department at John Abbott College and in the McGill Institute for the Study of Canada. For Moving Against The System Austin provided an introduction and compiled and edited the speeches from the Congress of Black Writers. In this conversation we talk with David Austin about the context of this historic gathering in Montreal, Canada in 1968, amid the rising tide of the Black Power Movement. We ask Austin about the involvement of key figures from the congress including Kwame Ture, Walter Rodney, CLR James, James Forman, and Richard B. Moore among many others. David Austin also shares some great insights from the intellectual and political practice of CLR James, and the proliferation of study circles with which James engaged directly. We ask about some of the contradictions and debates that come up in the Congress around the presence or role of whites, questions of Black Nationalism and socialism, varying analyses around class and race, lessons to be derived from African history, the omission of women from the group of presenters, and some of the generational divides. Finally, David shares some great reflections on the vibrancy of Black internationalism in the middle of the 20th Century, further highlighting figures like CLR James and Walter Rodney, and discussing Claudia Jones as an example as well. He also talks about the importance of books to anti-imperialist struggle, and ways that the publishing industry has been targeted by counterintelligence and counterinsurgency operations by the likes of the CIA and other related agencies.
