PARADE is by no means a "happy musical." But the way it has aged not only with audiences but within our culture has given it a happier ending than when it first opened in the 1999 Broadway season. This week, actor Max Chernin (Broadway's PARADE, BRIGHT STAR, SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE) takes a moment from playing "Leo Frank" in the show's current national tour to discuss how the wounds from the original 1913 trial continue to fester today and how important it can be to "de-role" from it all. By the way, if you're into "true crime," this is the musical for you. One of the most iconic musicals of all time, Hello, Dolly!, has returned to the London Palladium, with Jerry Herman's unforgettable score including Put On Your Sunday Clothes, Before the Parade Passes By, It Only Takes a Moment and Hello, Dolly! It's a huge, no-expense-spared production, with a cast of 40, and the legendary Imelda Staunton as the witty and charming matchmaker Dolly Levi. Jenna Russell plays the millineress Irene Molloy. Jenna is well known for her TV roles in Call The Midwife and Eastenders, and many theatre roles, including Guys and Dolls, Merrily We Roll Along, and her Olivier award-winning turn as Dot in Sunday In The Park With George. Nuala McGovern speaks to Jenna about the revival of Hello, Dolly! and the show's message to new audiences. In February 2021, a coup returned Myanmar to military rule, overthrowing the democratically elected government. Under the regime, violence against civilians has escalated, with thousands jailed, tortured and killed – although the numbers are believed be much higher. At least three million people have been displaced. Just two weeks ago, a UN Report outlined the gendered impact of the coup: It found that military forces have committed widespread forms of sexual violence. However, despite the coup's devastating impact, women and girls are taking on key roles within the resistance movement. Also this month, there have been seperate news reports that women are being conscripted into the military. Nuala discusses the situation with Tin Htar Swe, the former head of The BBC's Burmese Service. Nine-year-old Ella Adoo-Kissi-Deborah was the first person in the world to have air pollution listed as a cause of death. She lived near the South Circular Road in Lewisham, South East London and died of a fatal asthma attack in 2013. Her mother, Rosamund, who has been campaigning since her daughters death, is now seeking is seeking an official apology from the government as her high court claim against them heads to trial. She explains why she wants an official apology from the government. Nuala also speaks to Sophie Howe who is the former First Generation Commissioner for Wales where she advised the government on policy around transport and climate change - she now does this for other countries. SAnnie Garthwaite's second novel, The King's Mother, tells the story of historical figure Cecily Neville, mother of Edward IV and Richard III. Annie believes Cecily's role in the Wars of the Roses has been hugely underestimated by historians and her novel places her firmly at the heart of the action. Essie Fox has written five historical novels and her most recent, The Fascination, is set in the world of Victorian theatres and travelling fairs. They join Nuala to discuss the challenge of writing the stories of women who have been overlooked by the history books.Presented by Nuala McGovern Producer: Louise Corley

This is the second part of my discussion with Tony Award-winning Costume Designer Ann Hould-Ward in which we trace the legacy chain of Broadway costume design expertise that was handed down directly over a 100-year period from Aileen Bernstein to Irene Shariff to Patricia Zipprodt to Ann Hould-Ward, herself. If you missed the previous episode you may want to listen to that first. During our discussion was also touch on the careers of the legendary designers Florence Klotz, Ann Roth, Willa Kim, and Theaoni Aldredge. All in all, these amazing women designed more than 500 Broadway plays and musicals! Ann Hould-Ward is the Tony Award-winning costume designer whose work includes the original Broadway productions of Beauty And The Beast, Into The Woods, Sunday In The Park With George, Falsettos, and the revival of The Color Purple. To celebrate Women's History Month he is the first of two episodes recorded during the pandemic about the history of Broadway Costume design with special guest Ann Hould-Ward. Irene Sharraff is the legendary Broadway costume designer whose incredible 56-year career spanned from 1933 to 1989. She designed the costumes for more than 52 Broadway musicals including As Thousands Cheer, Jubilee, On Your Toes, The Boys From Syracuse, Lady In The Dark, The King And I, West Side Story, Flower Drum Song, Funny Girl, Sweet Charity, and Jerome Robbins Broadway. She was nominated for six Tony Awards and won the Tony for The King And I, and she received five Academy Awards for her designs for the now classic films An American In Paris, The King And I, West Side Story, Cleopatra, and Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf. One of the main threads of this podcast is how the arts and crafts of the Broadway Musical have been handed down directly from one practitioner to the next, generation to generation. Irene Sharaff is at the center of a succession of dynamic women that goes back more than 100 years to the earliest days of the Broadway Musical and continues right up to today. All of these women were mentored by one or more of the great female designers that came before them, all of them became Tony Award-winning star designers in their own right, and all of them have passed on the art and craft of theatrical costume design to the next generation. In this episode, I trace the legacy chain of Broadway costume design that was handed down from Aileen Bernstein to Irene Sharaff to Patricia Zipprott to Ann Hould-Ward. I recently had the pleasure of discussing all this with Ann Hould-Ward herself. Ann Hould-Ward is the Tony Award-winning costume designer whose work includes the original Broadway productions of Beauty And The Beast, Into The Woods, Sunday In The Park With George, Falsettos, and the revival of The Color Purple. 00h 00’00” Presentación 00h 02’02” Cabecera 00h 02’39” ANYONE CAN WHISTLE (1964) 00h 02’39” There won’t be trumpets 00h 06’21” A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC (1973) 00h 06’21” Send in the clowns (con Alexander Hanson) 00h 11’26” COMPANY (1970) 00h 11’26” Barcelona (con Richard Chamberlain) 00h 14’07” Being alive 00h 16’47” You could drive a person crazy 00h 19’30” DICK TRACY (1990) 00h 20’13” Sooner or later 00h 24’13” EVENING PRIMROSE (1966) 00h 24’13” I remember 00h 27’23” When (con Mandy Patinkin) 00h 31’51” Take me to the world (con Mandy Patinkin) 00h 36’22” FOLLIES (1971) 00h 36’22” Broadway baby 00h 39’37” Losing my mind 00h 44’08” Too many mornings (con Ron Raines) 00h 48’58” GYPSY (1959) 00h 48’58” Everything’s coming up roses 00h 52’30” Rose’s turn 00h 57’28” Some people 01h 00’53” You’ll never get away from me (con John Dossett) 01h 03’07” INTO THE WOODS (1987) 01h 03’07” Into the woods - Children will listen 01h 08’14” Lament 01h 10’17” Last midnight 01h 13’18” No one is alone 01h 17’37” Stay with me 01h 19’33” MERRILY WILL ROLL ALONG (1981) 01h 19’33” Not a day goes by 01h 23’17” PASSION (1994) 01h 23’17” Happiness 01h 27’09” SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE (1984) 01h 27’09” Children and art 01h 31’57” Everybody loves Louis 01h 34’44” Move on 01h 38’28” SWEENEY TODD (1979) 01h 38’28” Johanna 01h 41’13” Not while I’m around

This is the fourth and final section of my conversation with author Margaret Hall, about her recent biography of Paul Gemignani that is titled Gemignani – Life And Lessons From Broadway And Beyond. If you missed the previous episodes in this series, you may want to catch up on those before listening to this one. Paul Gemignani served as the Music Director for more than 40 Broadway musicals including those that are the focus of this episode -- Sunday In The Park With George, Into The Woods, Crazy For You, as well as the revivals of She Loves Me and Kiss Me Kate. If you are interested in purchasing a copy signed by both Paul Gemignani and Margaret Hall you can order it exclusively through the website of Buxton Books, an independent bookstore in Charleston, South Carolina. Many of Gemignani's collaborators are discussed in this episode including Stephen Sondheim, James lapine, Scott Ellis, Lonnie Price, Michael Cerveris, and Patti Lupone. This is the second part of my recent conversation with author Margaret Hall, the remarkable young theater historian whose new book is titled Gemignani – Life And Lessons From Broadway And Beyond. If you missed part one, you may want to catch up on that episode before listening to this one. Margaret spent much of the pandemic interviewing Paul Gemignani who is without a doubt one of the most significant figures in the history of modern Broadway musical. Beginning as a replacement with the original production of Follies in 1971 Gemignani served as the Music Director for more than 40 Broadway musicals including Sweeney Todd, Evita, Sunday In The Park With George, On The 20th Century, and Into The Woods to name only a few. Margaret's book takes us behind the scenes of those acclaimed productions and illuminates the crucial role that music directors play in the creation, development, and success of a musical. Paul Gemignani's incredible talent and theatrical know how made him the first-choice music director, and indispensable collaborator of both Stephen Sondheim and Harold Prince. As you will hear, after Sondheim and Prince ended their creative partnership and went their separate ways, Paul Gemignani was often pulled back and forth and caught in the middle between these two great artists and their various projects. As we ended the previous episode the legendary Music Director Hal Hasting's had unexpectedly died and Paul Gemignani has suddenly been drafted to replace him as the Music Director of A Little Night Music the new Prince and Sondheim musical that has just opened. My guest this week is Margaret Hall, a remarkable young theater historian who is the author of the celebrated new book Gemignani – Life And Lessons From Broadway And Beyond. As you will hear, Margaret spent much of the pandemic interviewing Paul Gemignani who is without a doubt one of the most significant, and at the same time most under-appreciated, figures in the history of modern musical. Since 1971 Paul Gemignani has served as the Music Director for more than 40 Broadway productions including Follies, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Evita, Sunday In The Park With George, Into The Woods, and Crazy for You, to name only a few. His incredible talent and theatrical know-how made him the first-choice music director, and indispensable collaborator of Kander & Ebb, Stephen Sondheim, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Harold Prince. Margaret's book not only takes us behind the scenes and into the orchestra pit of many of the most significant and acclaimed productions in Broadway history, it also illuminates the crucial role that music directors play in the creation, development, and performance of a musical. Later that same year, she was cast as one of Bobby's married friends in COMPANY, beginning a long and fruitful relationship with two giants of the musical theater—Stephen Sondheim and Hal Prince. Teri reprised her role in COMPANY in the California and London companies and after returning from London, she began rehearsals for their newest show, A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC. Teri's next two Broadway shows were not quite as successful. In fact, they closed on the road, but she had the great opportunity of beginning a working relationship with two of Broadways finest talents: Stephen Schwartz in THE BAKER'S WIFE, for which he wrote “Chanson” for her; and then with Cy Coleman in HOME AGAIN, HOME AGAIN. Ready for a little change, Teri headed back to California, where she worked constantly. Ready for another change, she recently moved back to New York. Teri's association with Sondheim's work has continued over the years. She has performed in and/or directed several productions of Sondheim shows. As a performer, she appeared in SIDE BY SIDE BY SONDHEIM several times…once with Peggy Lee; she played Sally in three different productions of FOLLIES, Mamma Rose in GYPSY, and Yvonne in SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE. In Los Angeles, she was the “stand by” for Desiree in A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC… and for Carol Burnett in the Mark Taper Forum production of PUTTING IT TOGETHER.

Hello! Thanks for tuning in to episode 11! This is a very special episode, because this time on the pod we embarked on our first three way conversation! Jarrod Draper, Lyndon Watts and Shannen Alyce Quan are all phenomenal artists in their own rights, and have been incredible leaders of change within the Australian musical theatre industry this year. A few months ago we were lucky enough to have all three zoom in and chat to us and our fellow WAAPA colleagues about what it means to be an ally through the BIPOC movement within the arts industry, and learned so much through this chat, so we knew it was important to have them on the podcast to relay what we heard to our listeners! A bio for our three wonderful guests below...: A proud Wiradjuri man, Jarrod is the first Indigenous graduate from the prestigious Music Theatre course at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. Born and raised in Orange, country NSW, Jarrod earned a full scholarship to the Regional Conservatorium to study Music Theatre and Classical Voice, which saw him perform both nationally and internationally for several years. During his time at WAAPA, Jarrod played roles such as ‘Sam' in Lord of the Flies, ‘Black Fox' in Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, ‘Louise's Soldier (pas de deux dancer)' in Carousel and most notably, ‘George' in Sunday In The Park With George, for which he was voted Male Performer of the Year by Perth Theatre Reviews. Jarrod could most recently be seen on stage in The Hayes Theatre Company's sold out production of Catch Me If You Can. Lyndon is a 2014 graduate of the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). After graduating from WAAPA, he was cast in the national Australian tour of Sweet Charity, originally staged at the Hayes Theatre. In 2015 Lyndon toured Australia in Anything Goes before going on to perform the role of Beautiful Girl Production Tenor in the Australian national tour and the international Tokyo production of Singin' in the Rain. Lyndon has performed throughout Australia in the ensemble of Disney's Aladdin where he also covered and performed the role of Jafar. Most recently, Lyndon started in the role of Bernardo in the internationally touring company of West Side Story. Shannen Alyce Quan graduated from WAAPA in 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts (Music Theatre). She recently worked for Norwegian Cruise Lines playing Cynthia in Priscilla Queen of the Desert - The Musical. Prior to this she was a part of the 10th Anniversary Tour of Priscilla Queen of the Desert - The Musical as a Swing and cover Cynthia. Other theatre credits include Natalie Goodman in Next to Normal (Black Swan State Theatre Company), Shirley in Boat People (Theatre451), Wendla in Spring Awakening (CPCA), The Disappeared/The Soul in Torment in Tejas Verdes (Theatre451). She has been lucky enough to work on several new Australian musicals including playing Kelly in The Gathering (Vic Theatre Company), Seela in Post: A New Musical (Something Blue Productions), and Maia in Matthew Robinson's Atlantis. Most recently, Shannen was a swing for the national tour of Six: The musical. In this episode we spoke about our hilarious onstage mishaps, how Lyndon, Jarrod and Shannen have been moved to use their voices for change within the industry, and what it means to hold space for both joy and pain in your artistry. We really enjoyed this episode and the open, generous and fun energy Lyndon, Jarrod and Shannen bring, and we know you'll love hearing what he has to say!
