On this episode we hear from Susan. She is the founder of b2b marketing consultancy Hive Marketing and fellow podcast host of Top Floor podcast. When she was a kid, she played at being the boss and we will see how this then materialised in her career. During college she had been working part time with a catering company and when she graduated, they offered her a full-time position, which she accepted as she was still not sure about what she wanted to do, and this was meant to be temporary. She then got stuck in hospitality. She spent a lot of her hotels career working in pre-openings. She realised through this experience that she enjoyed the full autonomy she would have at the start of any opening. Which then inspired her to start her entrepreneurial journey in 2009. She shares how she started out, how her business evolved and some of her own hurdles that she had to overcome, like the 'chip on her shoulder' of being the youngest. She overcome this feeling by her strong work ethic and knowing that all her efforts would come back to her.

Susan Barry led sales and marketing teams at Starwood Hotels before founding Hive Marketing, where today she helps hotel brands, management companies, and owners refine their message and better communicate their value. This show isn't about marketing per se, but I wanted to share Susan's experience because no great hospitality concept gets off the ground without someone selling the vision to investors, brands, management companies, and/or other participants. So if you are a participant in the hospitality industry, you'll want to hear her advice because the way you tell your story will affect your capacity to provide hospitality to the world.

In this 21st episode of the ThinkUp Podcast, host Lily Mockerman talks with Tracy Prigmore, founder of TLT solutions, a real estate investment and development firm and founder of She Has a Deal. Her other guest today is Susan Barry, 25-year hotel business veteran, now helping hotel owners with commercial strategy, and involved with She Has a Deal as Director of Communications. I imagine there are some plans that changed a little bit for you this year. How did this season of pitches differ from what you were originally expecting for the program? Tracy and Susan: Lily, Tracy and Susan go on to discuss: When we started, the women's pitches were due on March 14. Then everything shut down about March 15. So their pitches were already submitted and planned for opportunities that did not involve COVID. They had to really think on their feet! So many of these women started out green, not knowing much of anything about hotel investment. But then they were pitching as if they were industry veterans. We had comments from judges who said they'd been in the industry a long time, and they worked with many owners, and had not heard polished presentations to that level. So it was pretty exciting. How the concepts of the program were developed, and how they would serve to expose young women to the idea that hotel ownership and development is an option. The nine-stage hotel investment roadmap. The goal of creating a community, a network of women who were going through that same journey, to collaborate, share ideas, share challenges, and help one another achieve their aspirations. Advice on investing in hospitality with all the talk of potential resurgence and the uncertainty around how hotels will perform in 2021. To wrap up, Tracy and Susan give their top three tips on what women who are interested in hotel ownership can do right now to prepare themselves with the skills that are required to be in a 2021 pitch competition. McKinsey & Company's COVID-19 U.S. Consumer Pulse Survey released in late August shows how consumer sentiment has changed over the six months since COVID-19 arrived in the U.S. People are tuned into what researchers are calling the health-and-caring economy. And hotels are part of the mix. The survey shows an increase since mid-March of consumers' intent to book a hotel stay in the U.S. The study also reveals more people are shopping and buying online. But for consumers who plan to show up in person at a business, including hotels, most will base their buying decisions on whether the business treats its employees with care and whether staff members and customers wear face masks. The message consumers are sending businesses is loud and clear – health and safety is their top concern. But if your hotel can expand that consumer sentiment with a caring message, you may have a fighting chance at surviving the economic downturn caused by the coronavirus outbreak. In this episode of Lodging Leaders podcast we interview several hotel marketing experts about how the coronavirus crisis has reshaped the traditional sales-and-marketing funnel and what hotels need to do to attract the attention of prospective guests, many who are making travel decisions just a few hours in advance of booking. We feature Susan Barry, founder and president of Hive Marketing in Atlanta; Glenda Lee, a consultant at TBT Hospitality in Washington, D.C.; and Theresa Hajko, director of revenue management at Spire Hospitality of Irving, Texas.
