Some of her fondest childhood memories involve long afternoons at the library and then reading late into the night. More than ten years ago, she began journaling about the books I read and turned that passion into writing about books. Her first forays were as a guest reviewer on a friend’s blog, but she soon realized she wanted to be reviewing and talking about books on a blog of my own. From there, Novel Visits was born. That was in 2016 and, though the learning curve was steep, she loves being a part of the book community. Novel Visits focuses on new novel reviews (print and audio), previews of upcoming releases, and musings on all things bookish.

Patricia, or Trish as she was called by her family and friends, was born at Westerly Hospital. She grew up in Ashaway and graduated from Chariho High School in 1981. She had worked at Imperial Wallcoverings, Paragon, and Foxwoods Resort Casino before health issues took their toll. Her family and friends will remember Trish fondly for her sense of humor and her love of fun, always bringing a laugh at family gatherings. She enjoyed flea markets and her zest for life showed in her creativity, skillfully taking up, at different times, painting, cake decorating, knitting and other arts. Trish also belonged to The Church at Westerly and enjoyed teaching Sunday School and helping with community events. We will remember, too, the strength and courage she showed battling her illness. She had an unbreakable spirit, entertaining the staff at Yale with her wit and good humor to the very end. Her nurses said she was an inspiration to all those that cared for her and she left a mark upon their hearts that will stay with them for some time to come. Thank you for taking a moment today to remember and celebrate Trish's life. That's it for today, we'll be back next time with more! Also, remember to check out our sponsor Perennial, Daily Gut & Brain, available at the CVS on Main St. in Wakefield! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

PLUS: Forget the Big Game, it's all about the Puppy Bowl with Snoop Dogg AND LORI AND JULIA'S BOOK CLUB: "Landslide" by Susan Conley
A conversation about setting with Susan Conley, author of Landslide, and Lauren Fox, author of Send For Me, both published by Knopf. This week we have four Write the Book Prompts, thanks to the generosity of my guests. From Susan: During the interview, Susan urges writers not to be fooled by "description for description's sake.” Instead of just being happy with beautiful sentences about place, take your setting to the next level with this activity: Go to a place that has the most heat for you in your mind, in your project. Think about that setting and "describe the heck out of it" in a free write for 2-4 minutes. Then in the second half of the prompt, bring a huge problem to that place. Susan suggests that two characters have a big fight in that setting. Suddenly you introduce complexity, which brings in place as conduit for trouble and emotion. Leap from pure description and the beautiful sentence to the catalyzing action. She says she speaks of this with humility, having come to fiction through poetry. She liked writing beautiful sentences. But now she realizes that, in fiction, action really is necessary. It's not enough to describe the ocean. You have to have, in her case, "a teenager imploding in a boat on the ocean." Read "The Colonel," by Caroline Forché. A powerful poem, it begins, "What you have heard is true." Susan offers this line as a prompt for students and asks them to write without censorship for ten minutes. Something about that line often cracks open some big stuff for people. From Lauren: Write a short scene, and then rewrite the same scene in a different setting. As Lauren mentions during our interview, playing with setting—inventing, changing, renaming, re-placing (literally)—can present opportunities that open up our work in new ways. She also suggests an exercise that both she and her husband have shared with students; he's an English professor at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. Inspired by The Collected Writings of Joe Brainard (Library of America), the prompt is to write a series of sentences, all of which begin with "I remember." Lauren says that beginning with these two words tends to almost magically unlock memories and ideas. Good luck with your work in the coming week, and tune in next week for another prompt or suggestion. Music Credit: Aaron Shapiro

In 2006, Susan Conley was 42 years old and married to an addict whose well-being she valued above her own. Though she had never longed for a pony or studied horses before, one day she suddenly, inexplicably, felt drawn to find a barn so she could ride. In her new memoir, Many Brave Fools, Susan explores topics including addiction, dysfunction and codependent relationships—and shares the story of how horses helped her to navigate the aftermath of her unhealthy marriage and subsequent loss of identity. Susan quickly learned that riding was both harder and easier than anything she had done before. Though Susan had read countless self-help books and completed 12 step programs, she realized that the time she spent at the barn had transformed her the most. More than just evolving from a green rider to one capable of tackling the competitive arena, Susan recognized that horses had also triggered a change in her mind, body and spirit. Riding and interacting with horses helped Susan to rediscover herself, eventually emerging as a self-confident woman ready to embark on the next phase of life. Susan holds a master of philosophy degree in Irish theatre studies from Samuel Beckett Centre, Trinity College, an honors degree in psychology and a diploma in equine-assisted therapy and learning. She is the author of Drama Queen, The Fidelity Project, and the soon to be re-released The Magic Mischief.
