This week's Blues is the Truth is a celebration of deep grooves, killer guitar work, and soulful storytelling, with your host Ian McHugh guiding the journey as always. There's no shortage of legends and modern heroes on the playlist – from the powerhouse energy of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band to the unmistakable swagger of Freddie King and BB King. Robert Hokum brings the local flavour, while Howlin' Wolf, The Kinsey Report and John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers represent the deep blues roots. Also featured this week are Tad Robinson, Eugene Hideaway Bridges, Philipp Fankhauser, the Lachey Doley Group, Leeroy Parnell, The Too Bad Jims, Plas Johnson, and a standout track from rising star D.K. Harrell. It's a full-on ride through blues past, present, and future—don't miss a moment.

But, this time around, the Indianapolis singer/harmonica player decided to travel to one of the soul music mecca’s, Memphis, to record his latest record, Real Street, coming soon on Severn Records. He got a chance to play with the legendary Hi Rhythm Section, and the results are 10 tracks that sound like they came out of the same stable as Al Green and Ann Peebles.Robinson tells us what it was like working with these legendary musicians, some of the great stories behind his originals, and why he re-worked songs like Roy Orbison’s “You Got It” and Bread’s “Make it With You.”

When the blues sound this good you will want them all the time! Singer Tad Robinson has been nominated for 8 Blues Music Awards so far in his career. Born and raised in New York City, Tad’s first gig was playing at Tavern on the Green in Central Park, Not bad for a kid who was in 5th grade at the time. With idols that included, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, James Cotton and Sonny Boy Williamson, Tad knew he wanted to be a singer. In the late 70’s he attended Indiana University’s School of Music and started the Hesitation Blues Band. From there it was off to the vibrant Chicago Blues scene where he fronted the house band at the famous Rosa’s Lounge. During that time Tad also became well known in the commercial jingle business both as a performer and producer. In 2003 Tad signed a deal with Severn Records and to date has recorded four titles: Did You Ever Wonder? (2004), A New Point of View (2007), Back in Style (2010) and Day into Night (2015). Also a talented and accomplished harmonica or “harp” player, Tad Robinson is the ultimate bluesman. He and his band have played all over the world and at some of the biggest Blues festivals. I am honored to sit down with Tad and talk about his career up to this point. And even more importantly share with you a few songs from his work on Severn Records. We're coming up on the ninth anniversary of Indy In-Tune.  I will admit, when I started this project, I probably didn't know a fourth of what I thought I knew about the local music scene.  Over the years, I think I've picked up a bit of knowledge, seen a few bands, and made friends with a few people.  Of course then I get in a conversation with someone like Jeff Sample or Dave Brown and I feel like I'm right back there where I started.  Granted I live to hear new music and meet new musicians for the very first time, but glancing at the upcoming schedule -- much of it courtesy of Ms. Leslie Lynnton-Fuller and her deep connections in the Jazz, Blues, and Soul scene here in town -- and I'm once again awe-struck at just how much music is out there that I haven't even scratched the surface of after all these years. This week, for example, we meet Mr. Tad Robinson. Now, of course we've all heard the name and the music, but wow, now he's actually ... like ... here ... in Studio B!  Tad is a New Yorker by birth, but we give him a pass because he's a graduate of the IU school of music.  Over a career that spans four decades now, he's lent his talents to the likes of such regional and national acts as the Hesitation Blues Band, Big Shoulders, Dave Specter and the Bluebirds, and others.  Beyond that, his solo career, has earned him a string of soul and blues-related awards including multiple Album of the Year and Artist of the Year nods ... and still he finds time to hang out in Studio B, talk shop, and play lightning round with the likes of us.  Trust me, you owe it to yourself to listen to this music and hear the stories from the man himself.
