HEAVY Music Interviews
Venomous Rising With PRIMITIVE

HEAVY Music Interviews

Melbourne metal outfit Primitive were riding the crest of a wave before the illness that shall not be named swept the planet. They shared the stage with bands such as Max and Iggor Cavalera, Alien Weaponry, Psycroptic, Fleshgod Apocolypse and more, but found their hard fought momentum ripped from underneath them with the international music scene grinding to a halt. With a sound that defers strongly to the wave of early 2000s American heavy metal and metalcore, laced with an undeniably Australian ethos, Primitive appealed to a large market of music lovers and justified their popularity with their 2017 Self Titled EP and the follow up single For The Weak in 2019.Rather than rue their misfortune over the last couple of years, Primitive instead knuckled down with the aim of releasing a body of work when the world returned to some semblance of normality. That work and dedication has manifested itself into the band's latest EP With The Rats And Snakes, which is out now.If the single and title track is anything to go by, Primitive have certainly succeeded in their goal, with front man Tim Gauci sitting down with HEAVY to discuss the EP."I would call it a natural progression from the last release that we did back in 2017,” he mused. “We also released a single in 2019, and I guess it is a natural progression through what we've done before. So, a lot of fast paced music, a lot of groove based stuff, obviously very guitar driven in the riffs that we play and write and it's backed by an amazing rhythm section, so there's nothing I would say that's crazily different in regards to the music that we write, but I would say it's definitely a step up in its maturity and a look into what we did but an expansion on that. In my personal opinion it's trimming the fat off some things and making sure the vocals are a little more exciting than the last one. There is definitely something for everyone who is in the heavy scene. We're proud to be releasing it and proud to show it out to the world."In the full interview, Tim talks more about the single and why it was chosen to represent the EP, creating atmosphere and mood through music, the title and where it came from, how the songs on the EP represent the natural progression of the band, upcoming shows and more.Order the EP here: https://primitiveaus.lnk.to/wtras

It's been a while since Tecumseh ON Glen MacNeil has put out an album, which is why the arrival of his wonderful self-titled EP in 2020 was such a pleasant surprise. Glen is a fabulous songwriter. Indeed, his last album, 2015's "Where The Heart Remains" was included in our favourite albums of that year. Work on the new EP started during the early days of 2020 when Glen hooked up with Belfast Northern Ireland based producer Peter McVeigh - and then continued into the coronavirus lockdown. Alongside Glen MacNeil on voice and guitar, the EP also features John McCullough on keys and Dale Rivard on pedal steel and dobro. Music: Glen MacNeil "Car Window", "The Quiet" and "Just A Memory" from the "Glen MacNeil E.P." (2020, Self). Folk Roots Radio is a labour of love - a full time hobby. This is episode #7 of Artful Thought, recorded live at the University of San Francisco's KUSF studio, which aired on Saturday, May 25th, 2019. My guest is California native, Rachelle Rosegold, who is a savant and lover of various audio-sound realms, where her mission is “Combining communication with innovative audio to create social change.” We chat about Rachelle’s upbringing in a family of musicians, starting out in L.A. with her 3 sisters in a Pop Quartet, leading up to her journey as a vocalist, songwriter, podcast producer, sound engineer, Foley Artist, and DJ among other roles that she plays. Rachelle has tread a great deal in experimental sound projects, where she says she has “seen the power of sound and audio in people’s eyes and how transformative it can be.” She takes us through the many areas of the sound and audio, including live, audio production, new audio/digital workspaces (including at-home production), and mixing and mastering as the final step of audio production. As women whose paths crossed in the audio world, we shift to delving heavily into the questions and answers as to why on earth women only make up 5% of the professional audio world, and how the community as a whole needs to dismantle biased perceptions about gender through education, dialogue, and a shared goal of equal opportunity. We approach the issues of female identity and the gender gap in workspaces from a personal and global perspective. The root of the problem begins with ingrained undertones of a societal gendering of values— which in stark contrast to men, values women for how they look rather than what they do. Rachelle points out “We’re not even aware of the stigmas that are projected onto us” when reviewing statistics and commentary from an academic journal. Through a combination of our researched sources and personal frustrations with gender inequality, the message iterated is a need to dismantle certain perceptions about gender before gendered power structures can truly shift. Also, make sure to tune into Rachelle's KUSF show, Levels and Luster on Fridays 1:30-3pm PST, and check out her 2018 Self-Titled EP. For more info on how to help dismantle the audio world's gender disparity, please reference... Women's Audio Mission Sound Girls The Atlantic's "What Aren't There More Women Working in Audio?"
