DEV WULF The story of the native Houstonian begins with his hometown as the opening backdrop for a long journey in musical identity. From playing in bars on Saturdays and churches on Sundays, the Texicana frontman would gain a versatile understanding of multiple genres spanning from rock, hip-hop, blues, and country. Since his move to Dallas in 2008, the Americana singer would go on to open for national acts including Shane McDonald, Leagues, Grace Potter, Devon Gilfillian, Black Joe Lewis, Sir Earl Toon (Kool & the Gang), and Grady Spencer & the Work while performing with the band and as himself. While continuing his active work with Texicana, he is currently sitting in as a lead guitarist and vocalist for rapper, Moses Uvere. TEXICANA! “What would happen if we started a band together?” As Chris J Norwood and Dev Wulf recall, that's the resonating question at a round table in an old East Dallas bar; just audibly above an old cash-operated jukebox. Lakewood Landing would be the birthplace of a new idea between a trio of musicians and a few beers. The buzzing room of ideas would later evolve into an Americana outfit with joining members, Chris Pitts and Kelly Huffman, offering a unique rhythm section drawing from folk, rock, country, and jazz. Starting with little known icons, Big Star and Mudcrutch as influencing introductions, Texicana's early releases gave insight to their creative beginning with cover tunes, followed by their debut EP, No Good Reason. The Dallas Observer describes Texicana's nostalgic Americana and bluesy rock “as good for the soul,” during a time when COVID-19 closed down the country. Their latest offering, “Little Bit of Trouble,” continues to offer that good-for-the-soul feeling with songs that, as Central Track put it, “…feel like a trip down Elm Street with the windows down.” Texicana has gone on to win Best Folk & Americana Act and Best New Act of 2020 by the Dallas e-magazine Central Track, nominated Best Americana Act by the Dallas Observer, and winner of 91.7 KXT's Tiny Cake Contest. They've shared the stage with national acts Grace Potter, Devon Gilfillian, Black Joe Lewis, Southern Avenue, and Grady Spencer & The Work. Their EP, “Little Bit of Trouble,” is the latest to be released by Texicana and is available digitally wherever music is available.
Today's topic revolves around the return (albeit a slight one) of the live music scene, as we talk about some of our recent concert experiences. We discuss audience attendance as well as the DIY approach artists are now taking when selling merchandise & interacting with their fans. ** Once again, all apologies for the poor audio quality on Craig's part. Kevin was nice enough to give him one more strike before firing him, so we're almost sure it will never happen again :) **Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/SchizoMusic)

Facing Up to Race and the Future of Music" (North Carolina Press, 2020). Gussow's book is a virtual social and cultural encyclopedia covering blues history from its earliest days to the present where blues music is omnipresent around the globe. In this interview we tackle both the ongoing debate about who owns music as well as riffing on stories about blues legends like Robert Johnson, Son House through to modern blues artists like Southern Avenue and Shemekia Copeland. This was a fun, informative interview - don't miss out!In Chapter Two, Eric and Craig report the results from the Hooks & Runs Bowl Challenge with minimal gloating from Eric. They also discuss the Texas Longhorn program after Tom Herman was let go following a 32-point bowl win over Colorado and after the controversial decision to hire as his replacement Steve Sarkisian, Alabama's offensive coordinator.

On July 27th, 1988, temperatures were reaching 102 degrees in Phoenix, Arizona. 13-year-old Myron Traylor had just returned from his paper route. Myron had begun working the paper route to help save money to give to his church for their upcoming Disney trip. Leaving their 16th street house and Nancy Lane, Myron and his mother Debbie, began the half-mile walk north to his grandparents’ house. He carried a plastic bag full of dirty clothes as he walked, which he planned on washing once he got there. Myron was also excited to talk with his younger brother on the phone, staying with a relative in California. As they walked, Myron told his mother that he was thirsty and wanted to go to the nearby OK Fish N Chips to buy a soda. Debbie agreed and told him to catch up once he was done. Debbie continued through an empty field as Myron headed toward the restaurant. Located on 16th Street and Southern Avenue, OK Fish N Chips was very quiet for a Wednesday evening. Myron didn’t see any other customers as he approached. He ordered a wild-cherry cola from worker Lena Watt and immediately began gulping down. Lena said, “You must be thirsty,” to which Myron replied by ordering another. With his second drink in hand, Myron started walking back in the direction he came. Lena waved goodbye to him, to which he wiggled his fingers back in response. As he walked out of view, Lena went back to her work, not knowing that this was the last time anyone would see Myron again. This is the case of Myron Traylor.Anyone with information regarding Myron Traylor can contact the Phoenix Police Department at 602-534-2121. It's always a great thrill to hear a great band whose star is rising and starting to shine, and then getting to share it by getting the story from one of its founding members. The blues-based band, SOUTHERN AVENUE, is born out of Memphis and raised lovingly by its guitar player and prominent songwriter ORI NAFTALY. He spends some time with me to discuss his band and new album "KEEP ON," but not before he shared his own story. Ori hails from Israel, growing up in towns near Tel Aviv, the last being Even Yehuda, and finally came to the United States in 2013. This was after successfully establishing himself as blues artist with his own Ori Naftaly Band. But he got down to serious business in the states after settling in Memphis, which is where he met singer Tierinii Jackson and her sister TK, and with a couple more members, formed Southern Avenue by 2015 and is not looking back. You'll hear all this from Ori as well as tracks from the album, including the title track. I know you're gonna like it. Enjoy!https://www.southernavenuemusic.com/

We're looking to the current and future state of the blues and remembering Dr. John. That makes for great promise, as always, to be another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 744th Roadhouse.

The record, the Memphis outfit's sophomore release is filled with great R&B, Blues, and Funk sounds, tightly wound in a great little package. There are outstanding vocal performances from lead singer Tierrini Jackson, not to mention awesome outstanding musicianship from the rest of the band including guitar prodigy Ori Naftaly. We've been fans of this band since their debut, because, well to put it succinctly, nobody else sounds like Southern Avenue, and that is a good thing. We caught up with Ori, at his home in Memphis ahead of a grueling tour schedule that sees the band heading over to Europe and then back here for most of the summer. For more on the Southern Avenue's tour schedule and lots of great performance videos, visit southernavanuemusic.com. Soul is an over-used term. What it’s supposed to describe is music that’s real, human and authentic. There’s a Memphis group that embodies that term, mixing elements of R&B, blues, rock and gospel into something that’s unique, and very much southern and from the streets – hence the appropriate name Southern Avenue. They’ve just issued their sophomore album, Keep On, on Concord Music.Recorded at Sam Phillips’ legendary studio, the record serves up a dozen examples of their potent approach to a classic sound. Led by Israeli-born guitar virtuoso, Ori Naftaly, and fiery singer Tierinii Jackson, the group is rounded out by Tierinii’s younger sister, Tikyra, who plays drums and sings backup, and keyboardist Jeremy Powell. They’re currently on a tour that will take them coast to coast in the US before heading overseas. We chat with Naftaly about what got him to relocate 6,500 miles from his home country and settle in the U.S. He tells us how growing up in the church gives the Jackson sisters a very authentic backbone for their music. He also sheds light on how the band hooked up with legendary soul man William Bell for one of the songs on their new album.

In this episode of Memphis Type History: The Podcast, Caitlin gives Rebecca an overview of the history behind Glenview Historic District. Then we sit down with Glenview resident Tramica Bridges who tells us all about the history of her home and so kindly gives us a tour! In 1904, architect George E. Kessler began work on the Memphis Parkway system, part of the City Beautiful Movement which aimed to create a city that integrated well with nature. The plan included features like neighborhood parks as well as lampposts, benches, and other "street furniture." You can see aspects of this trend throughout Glenview, which was mostly built from the 1910s through the 1940s (although there are some homes that date up to 1997). In addition, there are also curves in the grid layout of the neighborhood, a new development that came alongside the introduction of cars into everyday usage. Within the subdivision, you can find wonderful examples of architecture of this period, such as the bungalow, craftsman, Tudor revival, Spanish Colonial Revival, and your good ol' ranch homes, among others. This historic neighborhood is bordered by South Parkway East on the south, Burlington Northern Railroad on the west, Southern Avenue on the north, and Lamar Avenue on the east. Glenview's first residents were white, middle class professionals – small business owners, salespeople, craftsmen, and the like. A notable event that once took place in the neighborhood was the staging of Tennessee Williams' first play, Cairo, Shanghai, Bombay! in 1935, when he was a student at Southwestern College, by the amateur theater group out of Alice G. Rosebrough’s home, aka "Rose Arbor." In 1956, Reverend Charles H. (Bob) Mason, Jr., the pastor at the Church of God in Christ (one of the largest Pentecostal churches in the nation and the largest Pentecostal congregation in Memphis) purchased the house at 1755 Glenview Avenue. The Glenview Civic Club and the Glenview Plan, Inc. (a business scheme designed to purchase properties put on the market in the neighborhood and sell them only to other white people) began working to keep Mason, Jr. and other African-American families, out of the area. We discuss these disturbing dealings and the attempts to intimidate with various acts of violence further on the show. Other black leaders made their home in Glenview, with 1968 being a turning point in the transition of the neighborhood. The National Guard occupied the neighborhood and imposed a curfew on black residents, which apparently signaled to the remaining white ones that outsiders considered the neighborhood to be a black one. So out they moved, making room for many extremely notable black leaders like the first African American writer for the Commercial Appeal, Rubye Coffman, the first black Memphis policeman, Memphis Red Socks players, and more. Next on the show, Rebecca and Caitlin visit Tramica Bridges for a tour of her Glenview home. Her house has been featured in the Glenview home tour in previous years, and she takes great care to keep its historical elements while adding her own flair. We loved how her son, the entrepreneur behind Mo's Bows, also adds his own unique take to the space! Tramica shares the history of her home's past owners, followed by a tour of the house. For full show notes go to memphistypehistory.com/glenview
SOUTHERN AVENUE takes its name from a Memphis street that runs from the eastern-most part of the city limits all the way to Soulsville (the original home of Stax Records). Its a fitting moniker for this diverse four-piece: two powerhouse sisters whose musical education came from the church (Tierinii and Tikyra Jackson), a jazz bassist (Daniel McKee) and an Israeli-born guitar virtuoso who grew up a student of the blues and funk (Ori Naftaly). The band reached the finals at the 32nd International Blues Challenge, Naftaly and his bandmates knew theyll be labeled "a blues band. And they love the blues but Naftaly says Southern Avenue is much more as evident from their debut album Dont Give Up on Stax Records MUDBONE tells the story of American music one song at a time. His performances reach a broad audience by taking them on a journey from the late 19th century when bluegrass met the blues, through the country, soul, funk, and rock & roll of the 20th century. He was born near the Black River in Northeast Arkansas. That river is the dividing line between the Mississippi River Delta and the foothills of the Ozark Mountains. Combining his abilities as a guitarist with fiery vocals, Mudbone has developed a signature sound that appeals to a wide demographic while remaining uniquely his own. His latest release Rivers', part 1 of the 2 disc set Rivers and Roads, is a reflection of old world delta blues, bluegrass and gospel music flowing together in the river they all come from.

Though they aren’t a household name yet, I predict big things for Southern Avenue, a Memphis based Blues, R&B, Gospel, Soul quintet, who have burst on the scene virtually out of nowhere. While their sound is tried and true, their story is a little less conventional.I sat down with Ori Naftaly to get the goods on Southern Avenue and their quick rise…… See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
We jump back into the flow that you've come to expect from The Roadhouse after a slight diversion in the last hour. It's almost all contemporary blues, including a set that builds from there into a pretty rip-roaring blues rock track. Southern Avenue, Coco Montoya, Jeff Michaels, Ruthie Foster, and John Németh help make up the hour. There are some folks we haven't heard from for awhile and at least one making his Roadhouse debut. It all makes for an hour of the finest blues you've never heard - another hour of The Roadhouse.
Om 22:00 sluit je zondagavond af met MusicTrails met Marc Stakenburg en Joost Verbunt. Muziek van Slim Harpo, Thundercat, Anders Osborne, Willie Hightower, Southern Avenue en The Rolling Stones.

This hour of The Roadhouse works to rectify an admitted deficit of female blues artists to male. Lauren Mitchell, Hurricane Ruth, Samantha Fish, Rhiannon Giddens, and Southern Avenue take you to a different side of the blues - a side that's a little less male-centric and a little bit more from a woman's perspective. That mix makes for absolutely another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 627th Roadhouse.
This week on MCR a showcase of bands from four music cities. From Nashville, big sweeping pop melodies and a skilled instrumental attack from Waker. From Athens GA, the haunting alt-Appalachian music of Cicada Rhythm. And from Memphis, an acclaimed ensemble that's about to release new music on the legendary STAX Records label - Southern Avenue. Also on the show, a spectacular archival set from our Loveless Cafe days featuring one of the finest and funkiest bands from Austin, Mingo Fishtrap.
There's a lot of good stuff in the hour ahead with Elvin Bishop, Thornetta Davis, Sonny Landreth, Southern Avenue, and Tab Benoit with Jimmy Thackery. But, the centerpiece of the hour is a tribute to Butch Trucks - a single track that I think really exemplifies the propulsive drummer that he was. It also helps to support the case that he was, simply, one of the greatest drummers of all time in one of the greatest bands of all time. While the track I pulled is really more blues rock, it's absolutely surrounded by another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 622nd Roadhouse Podcast.
