In the last 10-20 years, attitudes toward LGBTQ+ people in America have shifted due to more positive visibility and evolving cultural norms. Cynthia takes a look at two moments from 1970s television that revealed glimpses of LGBTQ+ allyship—a talk show moment and a 1974 episode of Police Woman. In 1970, June Lockhart appeared on The Virginia Graham Show and stopped the hostess in her tracks, pushing back on stereotypes and tropes common for the time. And the story of how a 54-year-old clip is available for viewing is its own testament to advocacy. LGBTQ+ scholar and media documentarian Steven Capsuto's book, Alternate Channels, helped Cynthia connect the June Lockhart dot to an episode of Police Woman.  Capsuto's book is an essential work for every media, gender, and social justice scholar. He traces television and even radio's early depiction of mostly gay characters and the absence of lesbians. His book also details the LGBTQ+ community's organization and support from straight allies that fought against distorted and ugly depictions of gay and lesbian characters in television and film for more than 75 years. The overall trend in American society has been toward greater understanding and support for LGBTQ+ people and this is, to a significant degree, the result of advocates and allies pushing for more positive and diverse characterizations in popular culture. Television largely ignored lesbians until the 1970s and even then, the characters were bitter, violent, and unstable. With just a few sentences, June Lockhart, in real life, and Angie Dickinson, as Sgt. I use my neurodiverse, special needs daughter as an example of more voting mishaps as well as the direct result of a university, in my opinion, sharing too much with her regarding sex and their moral ideas... and not only her, but a group of heavily influenced, tender hearts. Even though her age says she is ready for more, her soul is not because she still working on making up her own mind as well as discerning concepts. I harken that to jury duty with her as well.This then expands to the overtly sexual and gender topics that are being shared with young, malable children (also heavily influenced as their brains are developing - and I talk about the brain) even without parents' knowledge or inclusion. THEN, this leads to a discussion on the Kinsey Reports and well as the exclusion and censorship of Andrew Tate (ironically, in a world that screams for inclusion). Mixed messages all around. Confusion all around. To go through this ascension, the highest good is to be and feel whole. Hey friends! It's time for another grad school/Conversations mash up! I will be chatting about the impact of the Kinsey Report (first of its kind report on human sexuality, late 1940s/early 1950s) on Christian thought, particularly in American contexts. Because this is a research paper, I share all of my citations in the video, and below in this description. If you want the TL:DR, the Kinsey Reports galvanized two distinct and opposing theological interpretations of the Biblical view of sexuality, particularly in regard to queerness. I assert that the Kinsey reports inspired a virulent and boisterous anti LGBTQ strain of Christianity that is interconnected to themes of Christian Nationalism, Patriarchy, and Patriotism. At the same time, the Kinsey Report empowered liberal protestants to engage their theology in conversation with the developing understanding of humanity. By contrast, conservatives coalesced around staunch opposition to progress in any form. I propose that, as a result of comprehensive and ongoing research, it is evident that queerness is not condemned by Christianity in antiquity.Anti LGBTQ religious rhetoric is a result of anachronistic readings of the scripture.The freedom and diversity of queerness is opposed by the American Evangelical constellation of churches because it frees individuals from peonage to the church. At Tilbury Docks Eunice was tempted into a bar when she heard music and left the pram outside, when she returned the baby was gone. After a futile search for the baby, and too ashamed to admit what she had done, Eunice fled to Cardiff where she changed her name to Faith and started a new life with Trevor a dockworker and musician. Hope and Jim believe both the baby and Eunice to be dead as the boat they were to sail on was lost at sea. In fact the baby was found by Gloria and Clement, a childless celibate couple, who decided to bypass any adoption procedures, raise her as their own and call her Joy. Joy's life spans the entire series, up to the present day. The writers are Roy Williams, Winsome Pinnock and Rex Obano The cast includes Shiloh Coke as Faith, Danielle Vitalis as Hope, and Pippa Bennett Warner as Gloria, together with Gary Beadle as Trevor, Martins Imhangbe as Jim and Stefan Adegbola as Clement.

Okay, so maybe it's not quite THAT old...but this is going back a bit.  In Atlanta in the early 1970s, an advertising executive was dealing with a demon. It was the Demon of Creativity, and it was forcing him to write and to create. This ad exec's name, of course, was Hugh Wilson. The thing he was driven to create all the way back in 1971 had a name: "The Bagel Report."  The Bagel Report, or TBR as we've started calling it, was a full-length movie. It was a comedy...a sex-comedy, actually...in the style of Woody Allen. TBR skewered modern sexual research and attitudes...even the name was a jab at "The Kinsey Report." TBR was baudy enough to get an "X" rating...but nobody was having sex. Hugh even said, if there'd been MORE sex it probably would have been a better movie. Every aspect of TBR was Hugh's baby from inception to production. He wrote, directed, produced, financed, cast and even got the coffee for "The Bagel Report."VERY little is known about TBR. Only a handful have ever seen it. We were lucky enough to find someone who was IN THE BAGEL REPORT!! Janet Meshad-Wells is the wife of WKRP Music Director Tom Wells (1941-2012), an actress, and was a personal friend of Hugh Wilson. Janet was not only a part of the TBR cast, she did two scenes WITH Hugh Wilson. Janet mixed up a cocktail and got down to details with us. She talked Bagel Report, Hugh Wilson, Bill Dial, Hollywood, Atlanta and a WHOLE lot more! Our conversation is fast-paced, full of great details and, towards the end, possibly a bit tipsy. Wendy took a long hard look at his last Report - his 30th! - released exactly three months ago - to find the most ridiculously expensive parts (compared with their competitors) and ask one of the manufacturers if they've adjusted their out-of-whack prices since the release of the report. He and his wife Jill usually collect prices - directly from dealerships in the greater Durban area, to simulate the consumer experience - in May/June but last year that was the height of restricted travel and social distancing with many dealerships on light duty. So they delayed the massive job until September. His approach was slightly different, too - along with personal visits to dealerships, he approached a few manufacturers to supply their retail prices, including VAT – which he then randomly checked at dealerships. Dr. Christopher Ryan is a big personality with even bigger ideas. I first met Dr. Ryan when he came to speak at my college as a part of our speaker series, The Mouths of Others in 2013. I, like the rest of the world, was intrigued by the premise of his New York Times bestselling book Sex at Dawn. For the three of you who haven't read it (spoiler alert), the book brilliantly examines the archaeological, anthropological and evolutionary evidence regarding the origins and functions of human sexuality. It also challenges some long-held beliefs about the supposed “natural” supremacy of life-long monogamy in our species. Dan Savage called it “the most important book on human sexuality since the Kinsey Report.” Chris is one of the leaders of a movement of folks who are trying desperately to lead us back to ourselves. Going forward by looking back. Way back. To a time before the zero-sum game of infinite progress and profit-driven hysteria had chiseled us into the civilized monsters we have become. His new book, Civilized to Death, promises to cement his position in the world of celebrity academics (such as Oliver Sacks, Michael Pollan and Malcolm Gladwell) as a person who has the ability to see far and wide into the fog of human behavior. His work sheds some needed light into the dark corners of our collective experience. Chris is someone who many of you know to be brilliant, irreverent and worldly. What some of you might not know is that he is also one of the kindest and most compassionate people you will ever meet.
