This week, we’re celebrating the show’s 15th anniversary (which was last year, but never mind about that part). Over those 15+ years, we’ve done something north of 3,000 shows. And every one of those shows was intended, more or less, to be about some … thing. Towels or Trump or toast or television or whatever. This hour we do the opposite thing: a show not about a specific something — tapirs. Note: This show features Chion Wolf’s performance of “Let’s Not Talk About Tapirs,” with lyrics by Colin McEnroe and music by Chion Wolf. Also note: We’re idiots. Don’t let the fact that we’re idiots prevent you from finding tapirs as fascinating as we actually do. If you’re able, you might consider supporting the Tapir Specialist Group, which conserves “biological diversity by stimulating, developing, and executing practical programs to study, save, restore, and manage the four species of tapir and their remaining habitats in Central and South America and Southeast Asia.” GUESTS: Carmen Baskauf: Former producer for Where We Live on Connecticut Public Kimberly Hyde: A keeper at the San Diego Zoo; she handles the zoo’s tapirs in its Elephant Odyssey habitat Betsy Kaplan: Senior producer emeritus of The Colin McEnroe Show Jonathan McNicol: The producer of this very episode of The Colin McEnroe Show Carlos Mejia: Former digital producer at Connecticut Public Mike Pesca: Hosts the independent daily podcast The Gist Josh Nilaya: Former producer for The Colin McEnroe Show Susan Piver: Meditation teacher, speaker, and long-time Buddhist practitioner Patrick Skahill: Connecticut Public’s digital editor; producer emeritus of The Colin McEnroe Show The Colin McEnroe Show is available as a podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music, TuneIn, Listen Notes, or wherever you get your podcasts. Tapirs are Costa Rica's megafauna. They are special in more than just one way. Visually, they are highly elusive, but they have a rich vocal life. Due to their immense appetite for fresh greens, they regularly get into conflict with the local farmers. That's where the work of our guest, Dr Jorge Rojas Jimenez starts. Jorge is a PhD student at the University of Georgia in the US and the Conservation Program Manager of the Tapir Interdisciplinary Program Nai Conservation in Costa Rica. How do you get a career in wildlife research? Is it magic? Most likely it's rather strong determination, passion for the subject and a touch of idealism to make this world a better place. My guest is an early career researcher in veterinary science and toxicology. Her passion for wildlife research took her to some amazing places around the globe. My guest today is Anne Fleur Brand. She is a Veterinarian and toxicologist and was born and raised in the Netherlands. Fleur recently started her PhD on chemical pollutants in migratory birds at the Norwegian University for Science and Technology in Trondheim. Before her current research gig in the far north of Europe she did her Masters project on turtles in remote parts of the Great Barrier Reef, she assisted in research on Tapirs in Brazil and even squeezed in two years of teaching biology at an elite boarding school in the UK. I found her career path so intriguing that I invited her on the show to tell us more about her adventures and her motifs behind them. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter (@BoilingPointFM)!

This week we talk about one of the world's oldest mammals, the Tapir. Specifically, we focus on the Malayan Tapir. The Tapirs are fascinating animals that have changed little over the past 30 million years. What makes them even more intriguing is, the Malayan Tapir lives in South East Asia, whereas the other species of Tapir live in Central and South America. While they have diverged nearly 20 million years ago, they differ little in their body composition or behaviors. We had so much fun chatting about these rather large herbivores. Sadly, all the species of Tapir are in serious decline and heading towards extinction. They are well worth learning about and fighting for.  For one cup of "good" coffee a month you can support your favorite podcast on Patreon and give back to conservation. Just now I considered calling you all "Tapirs", but I didn't know if anyone would understaaaaand what a Tapir is (google them, they're almost as cute as you are).  Anyway, welcome to this week's fantastical episode, with the cult comedy classic Pee Wee's Big Adventure from 1985!  Starring none other than Paul Reubens, and featuring the directorial debut of Tim Burton, there's a LOT to unpack this week.  So strap in with your gumdrops, your elbow-shoes, and your Rube Goldberg machines, and enjoy this week on Tapes! This week, we've started our second decade on the air. Over the first ten years, we did some number north of 2,000 shows. And every one of those shows was intended, more or less, to be about some... thing. Towels or Trump or toast or television or whatever. This hour we do the opposite thing: a show not about a specific something -- tapirs. Note: Today's show features Chion Wolf's performance of "Let's Not Talk About Tapirs," with lyrics by Colin McEnroe and music by Chion Wolf. Also note: We're idiots. Don't let the fact that we're idiots prevent you from finding tapirs as fascinating as we actually do. If you're able, you might consider supporting the Tapir Specialist Group, which "strives to conserve biological diversity by stimulating, developing, and executing practical programs to study, save, restore, and manage the four species of tapir and their remaining habitats in Central and South America and Southeast Asia." GUESTS: Carmen Baskauf - A producer for Where We Live; occasional host of The Carmen Baskauf Show on WNPR Kimberly Hyde - A keeper at the San Diego Zoo; she handles the zoo's tapirs in its Elephant Odyssey habitat Betsy Kaplan - The Colin McEnroe Show's senior producer Jonathan McNicol - the producer of this very episode of The Colin McEnroe Show Carlos Mejia - WNPR's digital producer Mike Pesca - Host of The Gist Josh Nilaya - Producer, The Colin McEnroe Show Susan Piver - Meditation teacher, speaker, and long-time Buddhist practitioner Patrick Skahill - WNPR's science reporter; producer emeritus of The Colin McEnroe Show Join the conversation on Facebook and Twitter. This is the mental headspace required to allow for some cockamamie ideas, like the doozy that the horses mentioned in the Book of Mormon were actually tapirs. Yeah. Tapirs. Ancient Aztecs astride their mighty, erm, steeds. That was a thing? Apparently?
