Leitrim and Westmeath primary schools reach the national finals of the ‘Ireland's Future is Mine' digital skills competition. The two primary schools are celebrating to made it to the All-Ireland final of Ireland's first national digital skills competition. Leitrim and Westmeath Primary Schools Competition The competition is being delivered through a collaboration between Microsoft Ireland and RTÉjr. St Hugh's National School from Leitrim and Moyvore Primary School from Westmeath successfully progressed through the various stages of the competition, which challenges students to think creatively, collaborate and problem-solve as they re-imagine their communities and shape Ireland's sustainable future through the world of Minecraft. First announced in September, Ireland's Future is MINE digital skills competition challenges primary school students in both Ireland and Northern Ireland to use Minecraft: Education Edition to build critical 21st-century skills by exploring fun challenges such as building their own NASA rover and coding their very own polar ice hut. These challenges are aligned to curricula covering subjects from English and Maths to Science, Geography and SPHE. Delivered by Microsoft Ireland's Dream Space teachers on Dream Space TV in collaboration with RTEjr, the lessons are designed both to support teachers to deliver digital learning experiences in the classroom and inspire students to think creatively and encourage them to explore the possibilities within STEM now and into the future. Having successfully progressed through the semifinals, St Hugh's National School and Moyvore Primary School will now compete in the All-Ireland final, which will be televised in June in a never-before-seen e-sports-style exclusive programme. Commenting on the competition, James O'Connor, Vice President of Microsoft International Operations, said: “At Microsoft, we're passionate about ensuring students are given the opportunity to develop the essential skills that are required to fully participate in our increasingly digital economy and society. The ‘Ireland's Future is Mine' digital skills competition is designed to do just that while encouraging students to have fun, think creatively and re-imagine a more sustainable future for the communities they live in.” “We are so proud to see this vision realised in the form of the many innovative submissions we have received from schools around the country. I want to congratulate the Microsoft Education team and RTEjr for their passionate work in bringing this competition to life and St Hugh's National School and Moyvore Primary School for their dedication and commitment to creating such compelling entries.” Suzanne Kelly, RTÉ Group Head of Children's & Young People's Content, said: “Congratulations to St Hugh's National School and Moyvore Primary School for advancing to the All-Ireland final! We have been blown away by the incredible creations that have been built in primary school classrooms across the island of Ireland since September. We should take a moment to say well done and thank you to all the teachers and pupils who signed up and submitted their work. “The ‘Ireland's Future is MINE' competition has challenged primary schools across the country and provided students a fun and innovative platform by which to amaze us. We are very proud to have been there to assist them in shaping Ireland's sustainable future with Microsoft's Dream Space team and we can't wait to see what innovations we'll see next in the final!” More about Irish Tech News Irish Tech News are Ireland's No. 1 Online Tech Publication and often Ireland's No.1 Tech Podcast too. Every student is unique, with different strengths, abilities and requirements – but all deserve to have their learning needs met.  Offering support to children with more complex needs is not always straightforward, though, with a lack of funding and limited support from external agencies often cited as obstacles to improving SEND provision.  So, how can schools support these students and ensure they have the same opportunities for learning as others?  One answer is to look to technology. During the course of the pandemic, education technology cemented its place in the classroom as schools looked for alternatives to face-to-face teaching.   In this bonus edition of the Tes podcast, host Joshua Morris speaks to Annamarie Hassall, CEO of NASEN, and Stephen Taylor, senior learning technologist at Blackpool and The Fylde College, to ask how tools and software can help support students with additional needs. This podcast is sponsored by Microsoft Education. Microsoft believes that every student deserves the resources and support they need to fully engage in learning so they design for inclusion so that everyone can benefit.  They are focused on developing non-stigmatising built in tools to support those with dyslexia and other accessibility needs.    To find out more about these built-in tools Microsoft and Nasen have created a guide for educators and parents that can be accessed at https://aka.ms/AccessibilityGuideWithnasen (https://aka.ms/AccessibilityGuideWithnasen).    Microsoft and their partners will also be speaking and demoing the inclusive technology at Bett 2022 and the Dyslexia Show.

Today's Episode with Anthony Salcito:Anthony Salcito is the Vice President of Microsoft Education, helping others do more with technology as a tool around the world. Microsoft Education's main goal is to help drive student successes and have students leave schools with talent aligned to workplace needs and entrepreneurial spirit. Some specific work Microsoft Education does is provide tools like Windows, Office365, LinkedIn, FlipGrid, Minecraft, and more!Anthony's story began when he got his first computer and started to see a life beyond his neighborhood in Bronx, NY. His limitations to his own thinking were expanded once technology came into his life. He ended up working at Microsoft at a very young age because he was passionate about the work he was doing, spoke out and took on projects, and was open and transparent with his team. Anthony speaks on two universal truths: students always over deliver and teachers are not the problem, but the solution for transforming education. Education can sometimes be a challenge, specifically how to keep students engaged and help them want to learn. It is important to support teachers and bring teachers together so that they can share their ideas and learn from each other.Anthony explains his understanding of how the world's perspective of what it means to be a teacher has changed throughout COVID-19. Everyone has developed a deeper understanding of what it means to be a teacher, valuing education and technology in much more purposeful ways. Teachers possess valuable skills that can be transferred to other areas of life and other career paths. They are great educators, communicators, public speakers, and have great salesmanship.Anthony talks about how technology is going to change the workplace and careers that exist. There are and will be emerging technologies that need people who are interested in reshaping these technology building blocks. The biggest challenge Anthony is facing right now is dealing with the COVID-19 dynamic. Anthony is conscious about gaining energy and insight from helping others, being around, etc.You can follow Anthony on Twitter @anthonysalcito and find out more about Anthony's work at micrsoft.com/educationHot seat answers! Book to recommend: The Number DevilFavorite movies: The Last Picture Show, Rushmore, Empire Strikes BackApp you can't live without: YouTube Ideal vacation spot: HawaiiBest Amazon purchase in last 6 months: paper ice cream containersSelf care activity of choice: walking, listening to podcastsFavorite podcast: Nintendo Voice Chat, DLC, How Did It Get MadeEnjoy the show? As VP of Worldwide Education at Microsoft, he has navigated the company's response to the pandemic across the planet. In this episode of EdTech Today, Anthony examines the new tools and techniques used in this massive beta test of remote learning and suggests how education can build upon the experiences of this crisis.Microsoft Education posted a list of remote classroom solutionsBringing the online classroom to life for studentsIt's important for students to see their teacher and classmates at the same time during remote learning. That's why Teams expanded to a 7×7 Gallery View, allowing up to 49 students to be visible on video at one time.Another way to mimic the classroom setting is through Together Mode. An alternative to Gallery View, this feature has brought students out of their individual tiles and transported them into a shared setting—whether that's a virtual auditorium, conference room, or coffee shop.A smaller setting can also help foster student participation. Breakout Rooms have helped students work within smaller groups for a discussion or assignment, just like they would in an in-person classroom. The new Spotlight feature has allowed teachers to control the main video feed that students see during class. This can help students focus on the presenter, rather than on the many faces on the screen. It has also been critical to provide students with the right devices during remote and hybrid learning. Windows 10 devices have been crucial in giving reliable, secure technology to learn from anywhere.

Sponsored by DataDog: pythonbytes.fm/datadog Brian #1: New in Python 3.9 scheduled to be released Oct 5 Python 3.9.0rc2 released Sept 17 New features (highlights) Dictionary merge (|) and update (|=) operators. String str.removeprefix(prefix) and str.removesuffix(suffix). This have also been added to bytes, bytearray, and collections.UserString. In type annotations you can now use built-in collection types such as list and dict as generic types instead of importing the corresponding capitalized types (e.g. List or Dict) from typing. New PEG parser Any valid expression can be used as a decorator. see PEP 614. Haven’t quite wrapped my head around the possibilities yet. [zoneinfo](https://docs.python.org/3.9/library/zoneinfo.html#module-zoneinfo) module brings support for the IANA time zone database to the standard library. Lots of other great stuff too, please check out the changelog and give 3.9 a spin Michael #2: jupyter-black via Mary Hoang I recently tuned into the auto racing episode on Talk Python and liked Kane’s pypi suggestion of blackcellmagic. There are a couple of other pypi packages that envelop the idea of black formatting Jupyter Notebooks and I recently started using a new pypi tool called jupyterblack! This tool lets you black format Notebooks like you would Python files, only you call jblack instead of black. Then the extension provides a toolbar button a keyboard shortcut for reformatting the current code-cell (default: Ctrl-B) a keyboard shortcut for reformatting whole code-cells (default: Ctrl-Shift-B) It will also point basic syntax errors. Brian #3: Understanding and preventing DoS in web applications listener submitted suggestion, which led me to a bit of a rabbit hole by Jacob Kaplan-Moss Great discussion of what a DoS attack is, and how to check for and prevent problems, including a focus on Python and django. One example is ReDoS, regular expression DoS “ReDoS bugs occur when certain types of strings can cause improperly crafted regular expressions to perform extremely poorly.” Links to Finding Python ReDoS bugs at scale using Dlint and r2c, which talks about using dlint. dlint DoS linter plugin for flake8 Checks for a huge number of security problems in Python code. Can be used alongside Bandit. Michael #4: bbox-visualizer via Shoumik Sharar Chowdhury (SHOH-mik CHOW-duh-ree) I work with computer vision, and one of the pain points of working with something like object detection or object recognition is positioning the labels once you get the bounding boxes. So for example, in the first image in the README, you get the positions of the boxes around the objects using any object-detection method. That part isn't hard. Positioning the labels like "person", "bicycle", "car" right on top of the boxes, however, is quite annoying. You have to do some clumsy math to make it work like that. This library helps make that very easy. You just use the bounding box locations and their corresponding labels and the library takes care of everything. Moreover, there are some other cool visualizations that you can use, other than the standard label on top of the boxes. Uses Open CV in Python to work with the image files and in memory drawing Define the bounds, set the label text and you’re off. bbv.draw_rectangle(img, bbox) bbv.add_T_label(img, label, bbox) Brian #5: How to NEVER use lambdas. Another listener suggestion. Starts off with a brief example showing how to rewrite a power function as a lambda. Then jumps right into crazy code Replacing import statements with __import__(``'``library``'``) expressions Moving on to lambda-ifying class definitions Ending with a complete Flask application as a lambda expression. Truly horrible stuff Michael #6: Uncommon Contributions: Making impact without touching the core of a library via Alexander, by Vincent Warmerdam Different ways that people can contribute to open source software besides the typical code contribution. Often, contributions include adding features to a library, fixing bugs, or providing examples to a documentation page. But consider: Info rasa --version Before, this command would list the current version of Rasa. In the new version, it lists: The version of python. The path to your virtual environment. The versions of related packages. Cron on Dependencies A user for scikit-lego, a package that I maintain, discovered that the reason the code wasn’t working was because scikit-learn introduced a minor, but breaking, change. To fix this the user added a cronjob with Github actions to the project. Spellcheck Run a spellchecker, not just against our docs, but also on our source code! It turns out we had some issues in our docstrings as well. Error Messages In whatlies, we’ve recently allowed for optional dependencies. If you try to use a part of the library that requires a dependency that is not part of the base package, then you’ll get this error message. In order to use ConveRTLanguage you'll need to install via; > pip install whatlies[tfhub] See installation guide here: https://rasahq.github.io/whatlies/#installation I added something like this to fluentcheck: github.com/csparpa/fluentcheck/pull/22 Failing Unit Tests There’s a lovely plugin for mkdocs called mkdocs-jupyter. It allows you to easily add jupyter notebooks to your documentation pages. When I was playing with it, I noticed that it wasn’t compatible with a new version of mkdocs. Instead of just submitting a bug to Github, I went the extra mile. I created a PR that contained a failing unit-test for this issue. On May 2, 2017, I had the privilege of being invited to attend the https://news.microsoft.com/microsoft-event-may-2017/ (#LEARNWHATSNEXT) keynote produced by Microsoft. The first of its kind during Microsoft Satya Nadella's tenure as CEO, the keynote revolved around education and what Microsoft thinks the classroom of the future should look like. More than 20 educators from across the world representing Pre-K through University studies were invited to attend and meet with representatives from the Education team to share their thoughts about how this new direction for Microsoft can be implemented in their classrooms. Establishing a Laser Focused Philosophy for the FutureThe keynote started off with Nadella telling the story of how his grandfather started his journey into education and helped his father become an educated man. It was a powerful story. “Talent is everywhere, but the opportunity is now”. “Today's event is about education and technology . . . more importantly, it is about empowering the students today to create the world of tomorrow.” Throughout the opening remarks, Nadella kept referring to Microsoft's top priorities on education. The concept of teachers spending less time focusing on technology and more time doing what they love is a powerful example of the new direction that Microsoft and it's products will be headed in the future. One key to Nadella's speech was the focus on making sure that all learners are brought into the conversation. A Focus on students with Dyslexia and students who struggle with reading and writing is clearly at the heart of Microsoft future. It was very clear after spending 2 amazing days with the team from Microsoft Education that this wasn't just a product launch, rather it was a philosophy launch. The motto of Nadella and the entire Microsoft team is clear now more than ever. https://www.teachercast.net/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Microsoft-Motto.png () Windows 10 SThis summer, a new education-focused operating will be launched called Windows 10 S. What does the S stand for? Some say Safety, Security, Simplicity, or perhaps Streamlined. As it was described at the keynote the S was added because it adds a little bit of Soul to the Windows experience. Windows 10 S essentially puts a safe and secure shell on an already powerful and robust Windows 10 environment. This means students will experience better battery, better browsing, and a much faster experience logging into their devices. By default Windows 10 S actives the powerful Edge web browser that has also received some notable upgrades such as a Tab Preview Bar and the ability for users to use inking technologies to write and annotate directly on websites and videos. https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2017/05/02/microsoft-education-empowering-students-teachers-today-create-world-tomorrow/#FCYGCMcTRHjbjM4W.97 (Learn more about the new Windows 10 S Here) New Devices For All AgesNew Laptops Starting at $189There were two big announcements about hardware. The first was the addition of several inexpensive students focused laptops starting at just $189. All of these PC's feature Windows 10 S and a dynamic touch screen experience. To bring these devices to market, Microsoft teamed up with Acer, ASUS, Dell, Fujitsu, HP, Samsung, and Toshiba. Surface LaptopIn addition to the slate of inexpensive touch screen devices, Microsoft closed the keynote with a brand new device called the Surface Laptop. Starting at only $999, the Surface Laptop completes and compliments a very successful line of Windows 10 devices that include the Surface Pro, Surface Book, and Surface Studio. The Surface Laptop provides 14 hours of battery on it's 7th generation Intel Core Processor and comes in 4 beautiful colors (Platinum, Burgundy, Cobalt Blue, and Graphite Gold). I was able to spend some quality time with these computers and in addition to being very lightweight,...

What if she could be the one to find the cure, crack the code, or invent something that has the potential to save lives? When we encourage girls to pursue science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), we double the potential to solve problems. If she stays in STEM, she could be the one to change the world. Recent research shows that, on average, only 25% of tech jobs are held by women. If we really want to close the STEM gender gap, we must start early. In this conversation, join current and veteran classroom educators, who share concrete tips and best practices for encouraging girls' interest in STEM subjects and helping them to persevere once they start down that path.
