Ever wonder how to stay ambitious without tying your worth to your work? On The Art of Badassery Podcast, host Jenn Cassetta reunites with Jess Ekstrom, founder of Headbands of Hope and Mic Drop Workshop and author of Chasing the Bright Side and Making It Without Losing It, to talk about starting young, trying before you feel ready, and learning through setbacks. Jess shares how Headbands of Hope began after seeing kids with cancer want headbands, how a fraudulent manufacturer nearly derailed her, and how later she spent six figures on an app idea before cutting her losses and reframing it as “tuition” for the lesson. They discuss separating output from self-worth, building confidence through evidence, focusing on problems over outcomes, and Jess's “purpose test” for intrinsic motivation, plus Mic Drop's mission to help more women land paid speaking opportunities. What if the most powerful word you could say in your business and your life is the one you've been afraid to use? In this episode, Dana Skaggs, psychotherapist, podcaster, and keynote speaker, shares how nearly two decades in private practice and a very personal journey with her mother's mental illness led her to become one of the most passionate voices on boundaries in the country. They call her the Queen of Boundaries, and she didn't ask for the title. She just kept showing up for people who were burning out, avoiding conflict, and slowly disappearing from their own lives. Dana's keynote, Becoming the CEO of Your Mental Boardroom, is built on a simple truth: you already know you should set boundaries. The real question is why you aren't. In this episode, Making It Without Losing It: Holding Ambition, Success, Motherhood, Joy, and the Pressure to Do It All, I sit down with bestselling author and entrepreneur Jess Ekstrom to talk about what success really looks like in a world that never seems to slow down. Together, we unpack the tension so many women feel between ambition and inner peace, and why hustle culture often convinces us to delay joy until we've finally “made it.” Jess shares the inspiration behind her new book, Making It Without Losing It, and invites us to challenge the idea that productivity, performance, and constant striving are the only paths to fulfillment.Throughout our conversation, we explore the hidden cost of chasing success at the expense of our well-being, and why burnout, overwhelm, and anxiety are not personal failures, but signals that something in our lives may be out of alignment. Jess introduces the powerful concept of an “Arrived Mindset,” the belief that you are already enough right now, not someday after the next milestone or achievement. We talk about redefining motivation, finding sustainable success, and learning how to stay driven without sacrificing your mental health, relationships, or sense of joy.At the heart of this episode is a simple but radical idea: success doesn't have to come at the cost of your well-being. You can chase meaningful goals, cultivate motivation, and build a thriving life while honoring your nervous system, your relationships, and your own definition of fulfillment. This conversation is an invitation to rethink hustle culture, release perfectionism, and embrace a version of success that includes joy, presence, and peace, right here, right now.In this episode, we explore:What it really looks like to build a business, grow a career, and raise children at the same time—and the honest tension of trying to be present at home while still pursuing meaningful workHow motherhood changes your relationship to productivity, time, and expectations—and why success often has to be redefined in each new season of lifeThe shift from hustle culture and constant striving toward a more sustainable version of ambition—one that protects your mental health and allows room for joyWhy success is not a fixed destination—and how your definition of “making it” naturally evolves as your priorities, family, and responsibilities changeThe powerful question Jess often asks to clarify motivation: Would you still chase this dream if no one knew it was you?The core idea behind Jess's Arrived Mindset—the belief that you are already enough right now, and that fulfillment doesn't have to wait until the next milestoneHow speaking and storytelling can become powerful tools to grow a business, expand your platform, and share your message with greater impactThe reality that parenting, leadership, and entrepreneurship all require a constant balance between comfort and growth—and how doing hard things builds resilienceWhat it looks like to let your children see your humanity—including the hard days and imperfect moments—and why modeling perseverance matters more than perfectionBe sure to hit subscribe so you never miss the latest episode!Connect with Jess:Instagram: @jess_ekstromFacebook: jessekstromLinkedIn: Jess EkstromTikTok: @jessekstromTwitter/X: @jess_ekstromMic Drop WorkshopMaking It Without Losing ItConnect with Emily:Website: www.EmilyReuschel.comInstagram: @emilyreuschelFacebook: Emily ReuschelLinkedIn: Emily ReuschelJoin my Book Insiders List: Sign up here!Resources and Links:Sign up here to get the inside scoop to my book writing journey!Book me as a speaker for your next event - email inquiries to emilyreuschel@gmail.com or schedule a call hereWild & Waking – Produced by Jill Carr Podcasting | Learn More
You hit the goal. You check the box. You reach the milestone. And instead of feeling fulfilled… you're already onto the next thing. Yeah — that's the problem. In this episode of This Is Woman's Work, Nicole sits down with Jess Ekstrom — founder, bestselling author, and reformed anxious achiever — to call out the toxic relationship so many high-achieving women have with motivation, success, and self-worth. And spoiler alert: it's not a motivation problem. It's a meaning problem. Because somewhere along the way, ambition got tangled up with anxiety, productivity got confused with purpose, and we decided we'd finally feel good enough… later. After the next goal. The next milestone. The next arbitrary number. Sound familiar? We cover: The difference between anxious ambition vs. inspired ambition How to redefine success so it actually feels like success (not just looks good on paper) The “purpose test” that will instantly expose if you're chasing approval or impact Why you keep moving the goalpost — and how it's burning you out How comparison can either crush you… or prove what's possible Because here's the uncomfortable truth: if you keep tying your worth to what's next, you will never feel like enough — no matter how much you accomplish. We don't get dopamine at the finish line — we get it in the chase. Which means every goal you're killing yourself to reach is quietly wired to disappoint you the moment you arrive. Jess Ekstrom found this out the hard way. She scaled Headbands of Hope to millions in revenue, got acquired, hit the Inc. 500 — and felt nothing within minutes. Her new book, Making It Without Losing It, is the framework she built from the wreckage of that realization. In this episode of The High Performance Mindset, Dr. Cindra Kamphoff sits down with entrepreneur, speaker, and author Jess Ekstrom to explore what it really takes to build confidence, find intrinsic motivation, and share your voice without losing yourself in the process. Jess is the founder of Mic Drop Workshop, where she has helped thousands of women become more confident speakers and step into their voice. Her upcoming book, Making It Without Losing It, focuses on how to stay grounded, purpose-driven, and intrinsically motivated in high-pressure, performance-based environments. At the heart of this conversation is a powerful shift: moving from being a "spotlight speaker"—focused on how you're being judged—to a "lighthouse speaker"—focused on how you can help others. Jess shares how this shift not only reduces anxiety but also improves performance, authenticity, and impact. The conversation also dives into intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivation, and why chasing outcomes, recognition, or approval can lead to burnout and disconnection. Instead, Jess encourages us to reconnect with purpose, focus on what we can control, and measure success by impact—not applause. This episode is a powerful reminder that confidence and fulfillment aren't built by performing for others—but by staying connected to what truly matters and using your voice to serve. You'll Learn: • The difference between a spotlight speaker and a lighthouse speaker—and how it changes your confidence • How to shift from outcome-driven thinking to purpose-driven performance • A simple "purpose test" to evaluate your motivation • Why intrinsic motivation leads to more creativity, fulfillment, and impact • How to stay confident and authentic—even in high-pressure environments Episode Resources & Links Learn more about Jess Ekstrom: https://jessekstrom.com/ Register for the Mental Performance Summit April 17th: https://mentalperformancesummit.org/ Learn more about the Mentally Strong Institute: https://mentallystronginstitute.com/ Request a Free Mental Breakthrough Call: https://freementalbreakthroughcall.com/ Download the Confidence Research Study: https://confidencestudy.com/

What Most People Get Wrong About Public Speaking (And How to Do It Strategically) What's the secret to getting paid for your perspective? From virtual events to in-person stages, paid speaking is an incredible way to grow your authority, gain visibility, and win over new subscribers and customers. But how do you land a quality gig? In today's episode, I'm sitting down with Jess Ekstrom, bestselling author, professional keynote speaker, and founder of Mic Drop Workshop to talk about just that. Jess is sharing exactly how speaking works today, how to price yourself with confidence, and how to turn speaking into a powerful growth lever for your business. We talk about what event planners actually pay for, why your story matters more than your pitch, how women can close the pay gap in speaking, and the smartest ways to negotiate so every speaking gig creates momentum beyond the stage. HERE ARE THE 3 KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE: 1️⃣ Speaking Isn't About Selling Your Business, It's About Sharing the Lesson – People don't pay for an elevator pitch. They pay for the universal takeaway from your experience. Your business becomes the story that supports the lesson, not the headline of your talk. 2️⃣ Your Speaking Fee Is Based on Your Knowledge, Not the Size of the Stage – Audience size and talk length don't determine your rate. Your experience, expertise, and the value of your message do. Some of the highest-paying gigs happen in small rooms. 3️⃣ Every Speaking Gig Can Create Ongoing Business Growth – From bundling your course into your speaking fee to collecting leads with a simple QR code, speaking can fuel your email list, sales, and referrals long after you leave the stage. CHAPTERS: 08:49 – Why Paid Speaking Isn't About Big Stages 09:24 – How Speaking Fuels Business Growth Without Selling 13:16 – The Gender Gap in Paid Speaking 15:25 – What New Speakers Should Charge 17:20 – Why Audience Size Doesn't Affect Your Fee 24:17 – Speaking for Free vs. Getting Paid 27:04 – The Lighthouse vs. Spotlight Speaker Shift 33:46 – First Steps to Getting Booked 37:05 – Common Mistakes New Speakers Make 40:41 – How to Get Started with Speak On Stage RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: - Learn more about Jess Ekstrom and Mic Drop Workshop - Follow Jess on Instagram @jessekstrom - Watch Jess's TED Talk MORE FROM ME Follow me on Instagram @amyporterfield SUBSCRIBE & REVIEW If you loved this episode, please take a moment to subscribe and leave a review on Apple Podcasts! As women, especially Moms, we have life experiences that have formed us. Our struggles and triumphs become a message to share to inspire others. In a world where we continuously seek ways to make a difference, the power of sharing our experiences and insights has never been more crucial. Whether you're driven by a sense of purpose or a desire to impact others positively, speaking can be a transformative tool in your journey. Unfortunately, many individuals feel a calling to share their message, but are often held back by uncertainty and self-doubt. However, if you have an impactful message, we want to help you start speaking today to share your story and make a difference. Your Unique Message to Share Everyone has a story or perspective that deserves to be shared. It's common to compare our stories to others, wondering if they are significant enough. Remember, what seems ordinary to you might be life-changing for others. The value of your message lies in its authenticity and relatability, not in pomp or spectacle. Embrace this reality and step forward to share what makes your journey unique. Start Speaking: Find Your Focus If you want to start speaking, clarity is your friend. Begin by defining what you want to be known for—your speaker statement. This involves identifying who you can help and how your speaking can facilitate that transformation. Specificity in your message enables you to connect with the right audience. Rather than trying to cover numerous topics, focus on one area where your insights can have the most significant impact. Overcoming the Fear of Speaking For many, anxiety and fear are significant hurdles to becoming a speaker. Shifting from seeing public speaking as a performance to viewing it as a service can make a huge difference. By focusing less on yourself and more on the needs of your audience, the pressure to be perfect diminishes. Think of yourself as a lighthouse, guiding others with your insights, instead of a spotlight, seeking validation. Read the full show notes and access all links.

As business owners, we've all been there—those million ideas a minute, right? Some of them make it through the "friends and family board of directors," and then we decide, let's go for it! But here's the thing: have you ever had an idea that felt amazing at first, only to later ask yourself, What the heck am I doing?Maybe you've poured time, energy, and resources into something you were sure would be a game changer, only to realize it wasn't going to make the money you hoped—or maybe it didn't quite fit the life you want to build. Yeah… same. But here's the deal: it's ok to stop. It's ok to pivot. In fact, it's necessary sometimes. And if you're sitting there thinking, But pivoting feels like failure, trust me—you're going to see things differently by the end of this episode.-----Connect with Jess Ekstrom:JessEkstrom.comMic Drop Workshop: https://micdropworkshop.com/Amplify with Jess Ekstrom Podcast: https://micdropworkshop.com/amplify-podcast/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jess_ekstrom/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jess-ekstrom-speaker-author/Text HYPE to 704-228-9495------(00:03:10) NOT writing down ideas?(00:06:52) I used to be heavy into journaling...(00:09:40) What is your low stakes playground?(00:15:00) The $300K investment that Jess gave back(00:20:00) The partnership that Megan backed out of last minute(00:23:50) Making decisions for tomorrow(00:32:00) 5 year goals? 10 year goals? I'll say right upfront that this is a different kind of episode for the podcast, but stick with me, because today, we're diving into digital decluttering. I know firsthand the toll digital clutter can take. Raising neurodivergent kids means managing a ton of information — from school communications and teacher emails to scheduling appointments, handling assessments, and organizing documentation. It's a lot to keep track of, and it can really weigh us down. If you can relate, this episode is for you. I invited tech and productivity coach Amanda Jefferson, affectionately known as the Tech Whisperer, to help us tackle digital clutter. Amanda guides busy people through streamlining their digital lives and speaks about silencing society's noisy “shoulds.” She's a TEDx speaker, one of the world's first KonMari consultants, and co-host of the Good Enough-ish podcast. Her work has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, Real Simple, Harper's Bazaar, and Good Day Philadelphia. In our conversation, we discussed the importance of digital decluttering, particularly for neurodivergent families. Amanda shared strategies for securely storing essential documents, organizing email to reduce stress, managing passwords, and using what she calls “free assistants” on our devices to make daily routines run more smoothly. Even if you consider yourself tech-savvy, I think you'll learn something new in this episode. Enjoy, and hopefully, you'll walk away with some actionable steps! I was hesitant to restart this podcast because my mind was saying, "Is the world too noisy right now? Are we in information overload? Will I be yet another podcast that people will roll their eyes at?"But we were in Week 3 of Mic Drop Academy, which is our 10-week elite speaker program for women. And I was giving advice to someone who is hesitant to start their career as a speaker or in thought leadership - If what you have to say can help someone else, then you'd be doing them a disservice by not saying it. So this podcast - with a new name, Amplify with Jess Ekstrom - is another way I can help lift women up. And I have some pretty amazing guests lined up who will help as well!Follow along on any podcast channel or on YouTube, and we'll see you January 8th with episode 1!Amplify with Jess Ekstrom is produced by Earfluence and brought to you by Mic Drop Workshop.

Today on the Growth Over Goals podcast, we are blessed to be able to sit at the table with two-time author, speaker, entrepreneur, and founder of Headbands of Hope – Jess Ekstrom. Jess's path to her destiny started with an impactful conversation with her entrepreneurial father when she was in her early teens that lead to the beginning of her “inspiration from frustration” life motto. After an extremely difficult life event - in which her family lost all of their money - pulled the rug out from under Jess's feet, she was faced with the incredible realization that we only have one life, and we need to live it. This transformative experience shifted Jess into the role of an achiever – a role which eventually lead her to found Headbands of Hope, a charity that provides headbands to kids with cancer. Lessons learned while running her charity formed Jess into an incredible public speaker who turned her life experience into a lesson plan in her Mic Drop Workshop for other women who wanted to find their place in the professional speaking world. Jess has ultimately learned one of the greatest skills of life: how to fail well. Today, she shares her wisdom with you, dear listener, and helps us understand how failure can feel better than regret. We all have the ability to build a brighter future, and this podcast will certainly inspire you to do that today! Regardless of what your life has looked like to this point, if you are a person with an idea this podcast episode is for you! We had Forbes' top-rated speaker Jess Ekstrom on The Porch to talk about speaking with confidence and using your story to make a difference. There is so much great advice in here for speakers. Here are just some of the tips she shared: 1. A good story has a Premise and Promise. Your Premise is your story. The Promise is the takeaway for the audience. The lessons you've learned shared in your premise can apply to everyone through a promise. 2. The best speakers have a curious mindset and are learners, not just tellers. 3. You don't have to be the expert on the stage to be credible. Simply being ahead of the game compared to your audience, having an interesting story, and a relatable message is enough to provide value and influence to your audience. 4. You decide what your “success currency” is for yourself. It won't be the same for everyone and the freedom is letting go of the expectations of others with different currency expectations compared to you. There are so many ways to stay in Jess' world in real life. Her weekly hype texts (which I receive and LOVE), her Mic Drop Workshop, TikTok, LinkedIn... stay connected so you can borrow her courage!
