This is a public episode. In "Who Did It Better?" we ask you to vote and tell us which version of "Mixed Up Confusion" is better: the one recorded on November 1, 1962 and released 23 years later on BIOGRAPH or the one recorded on November 14, 1962 and released one month later as the A-side to Dylan's first single? Listen to the episode, then go to our Twitter page @RainTrains to vote!

MUSIC is not a GENRE

SUPPORT ME ON PATREON WATCH MUSIC is not a GENRE VIDEOS and MORE I recently had a conversation with a fellow musician who brought up the point that technology often drives music development. It's a topic I covered in an older podcast episode, and one I've been fascinated by for years. This usually refers to things like amplification, electric instruments, synthesizers, recording devices, digital tech, etc. We often overlook the fact that the way music is delivered to people has done just as much to shape what that music has become. The earliest recording technology used to disseminate music widely was very limited both in sonic quality and duration. One side of a 78-rpm disc could hold only about 3-5 minutes of music. This was the standard until the late 1940s, when 33 1/3 took over and 12” sides could be much longer. From the late 1890s until that point, whatever was recorded either had to be a very short musical piece, or a longer piece broken into many shorter segments. When the first box set came out – ca. 1894 (YES YOU READ THAT RIGHT), the few recorded music connoisseurs who existed were into classical music. Most of those pieces were way longer than 3-5 minutes, so they were segmented. To get, say, a full symphony or even one movement onto shellac (the most common material used for 78s), you'd have to divvy it up into SEVERAL sides. It might take at least six sides, or three discs, to complete that movement. Meaning for a whole symphony you'd need a good dozen discs. Which is why box sets have existed since the beginning of commercial recorded music. They HAD to. It's also why, when single songs became more popular than symphonies, they had to be 3-5 minutes long. Look no further than this fact to understand why that is STILL the standard length range for a pop song of any kind. And when 33 1/3 gave companies the option of having 23 or so minutes per side, that's when the idea of an “album” morphed from describing a collection of discs – a.k.a. “box set” – to one disc; and also why until the CD era albums could be no more than about 45 minutes total. As for box sets, they continued to pop up as music changed. In fact, the very first ever 33 1/3 album sold was a box set – again a classical piece, in June 1948. That said, today when we think of box sets (if we think of them at all and don't just create streaming playlists), we usually think of collections of songs or albums from one artist or genre or era. It took decades for the music industry to have enough of a history of recorded material to warrant box sets like these, which is why they became so popular on vinyl and cassette in the 1970s, and on CD in the 1980s & 1990s (the first being Bob Dylan's Biograph in 1985) – the true heyday of box sets and recorded music in general. Right before the crash. Where are box sets today? Oddly enough, they're about where they were way back in 1894, meaning anyone likely to buy ANY physical music – CDs, or vinyl for the retro minded – will get one of those boutique box sets with the booklets & B-sides & outtakes & all the rest. They're collector's items. I have several, but truth be told while I fully absorb the books, I usually just stream the contents. I'll be putting out an extended set of REC music this year – hits & favorites since REC's inception. Until then, the best example of a box set in my catalog is REC's latest release: REC – The Weird Objective All the Info On YouTube On Spotify On Apple --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/musicisnotagenre/support

Sign on the Window is like that necktie and your Panama hat... it helps you look good in the face of utter destruction. Each week we listen to a random Bob Dylan song and this week, from 1976, "Black Diamond Bay." We talk context (5:45), the merits of traveling over staying in LA drinking a beer (12:00),the song itself (23:00, theories (30:00) and storytelling. We talk Conrad, Achebe, and Kendrick Lamar so buckle up. CONTEXT (5:45)“Black Diamond Bay” was recorded at Columbia Studios in New York City on July 29, 1975 in 12 takes, then on July 30 in 5. There is a connection to Joseph Conrad, namely the 1915 novel Victory, as Ian Bell notes:There is no hero, certainly no epic journey, least of all a spiritual rebirth. Instead, the song owes everything to Conrad’s use in Victory of doubled perspectives, physical and moral, and to the idea of fate, blind and mute, that permeates Blood on the Tracks. In ‘Black Diamond Bay’, good and evil contend; people scurry around on their plots, affairs and petty human errands; the volcano explodes regardless. The End. — Ian Bell, Time Out of Mind: The Lives of Bob DylanThis song was played only 1 time. Or was it?!?!Bob Dylan dot com, your home for most things Bob Dylan, says that the song was performed in Salt Lake City, Utah, on May 25, 1976, at the end of the Rolling Thunder Revue. Ian Bell mentions a 2003 collection by **Les Kokay (Songs of the Underground: A Collector’s Guide to the Rolling Thunder Revue 1975–1976)which notes the supposed performance but accepts that the claim is based on a single unsupported report of a show with no bootleg extant.TRAVELING OR STAYING IN LA WITH A BEER? (12:00)This song was written with the end in mind. The closing line makes it clear: there’s always another hard luck story that you’re gonna hear. Dylan told Neil Hickey in 1976:I don’t feel that to live in this country you have to watch the TV news. You learn from talking to other people. You have to know how people feel, and you don’t get that from television news. And in the end I never did plan to go anyway to Black Diamond Bay. As two traveled people who can conceptualize nameless, faceless people far away living lives of imagination and passion, do we relate to Dylan’s apathy?SONG ITSELF (23:00)Definitely a hidden gem in the Dylan catalogue, as ambitious as “Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts” and “Changing of the Guards” as a stand alone fiction. It’s got this old movie kind of vibe, the “movie-spinning” as Michael Gray calls it. You can almost see this in black and white while present day schlub, drink in hand, is vividly, embarrassingly, in color. The narrative is engaging and the chord sequences complement the mood. The level of detail is astounding as are Dylan’s casual flexes with the songs internal rhyming (“veranda” with “necktie and a;” “open” with “rope and;” “second floor” with “Ambassador;” “vous plaît” with “fly away;” “the basement blew” with “je vous aime beaucoup”).Dylan populates this islands with memorable characters. Our main character, the woman in the Panama hat, is trying to start her life over before it’s too late. The Greek tries to kill himself, fails (?, or doesn’t), but the volcano goes off anyway. The desk clerk reassures everyone the rumblings “happen everyday.” The soldier and the tiny man, the loser and dealer. The Soviet ambassador. It just goes on!Which makes the end of the song wallop. Daniel likened it to the end of Chinua Achebe’s masterpiece Things Fall Apart. The novel, which focuses in Okonkwo in nineteenth century Nigeria, closes with this passage (imagine the Commissioner in LA drinking a beer on some sofa):The Commissioner went away, taking three or four of the soldiers with him. In the many years in which he had toiled to bring civilization to different parts of Africa he had learned a number of things. One of them was that a District Commissioner must never attend to such undignified details as cutting a hanged man from the tree. Such attention would give the natives a poor opinion of him. In the book which he planned to write he would stress that point. As he walked back to the court he thought about that book. Every day brought him some new material. The story of this man who had killed a messenger and hanged himself would make interesting reading. One could almost write a whole chapter on him. Perhaps not a whole chapter but a reasonable paragraph, at any rate. There was so much else to include, and one must be firm in cutting out details. He had already chosen the title of the book, after much thought: The Pacification of the Primitive Tribes of the Lower Niger. — Chinua Achiebe, Things Fall ApartThe irony that we just read an entire book on a man who will be reduced to a paragraph resonated. All those hard luck stories that you’re gonna hear are worthy, even if we concede that we don’t have the capacity to hear them all. Achiebe, and Dylan, challenges our perception and empathy for others.THE EPISODE’S BOOKLET & PLAYLISTRECOMMENDATIONSKelly “discovered” the back catalog of Kendrick Lamar. ‘Bout time. Daniel played Great Collapse Neither Washington Nor Moscow… Again (and The Redskins Neither Washington Nor Moscow… from 1986.ENDINGSKelly guessed #402. “Let’s Stick Together.” Would be our first from Down in the Groove. THE GANGSTER CHRONICLES A special edition of Yesterday’s News focusing on the notorious scoundrels of the Prohibition and Depression eras. The Final Chapter of the Dillinger Saga - The first volume of this this series has been devoted to the exploration of newspaper accounts of the trail of terror blazed by one of America’s most famous, dare I say most beloved, gangsters, John Dillinger. - From the time he was paroled from the Michigan City prison in May, 1933, to the time he was gunned down by police on a Chicago sidewalk 14 months later, John Herbert Dillinger was one of America’s most notorious scoundrels. - In previous chapters, we read the newspaper accounts of the escape of ten convicts from the Indiana penitentiary at Michigan City and the bloody delivery of Dillinger from the Lima, Ohio, jail; how Dillinger and his new gang blazed a trail of terror across the Midwest until he was captured in Tuscon, his second daring escape using a gun he made from broomstick, and his continuing reign of terror. Last month, we heard about one more narrow escape from the clutches of the law and one final bank robbery. - The narration for this episode was recorded on the main stage of the Biograph Theatre in Chicago, where Dillinger saw his last film just minutes before meeting his fate on the sidewalks of the Windy City. It was a movie theater then, and Dillinger, his hair dyed black, came here with two women to see Clark Gable in “Manhattan Melodrama,” and on the way out… Well, listen to this episode to see how it all shakes out. - Music by Chuck Wiggins - www.truecrimehistorian.com/1934dillingers0106

The city of Auckland was founded in 1840 in a mix of hope and compromise and the occasion was marked with a suitably pompous ceremony. Just one eyewitness account remains from that day, and it was written by the only Pakeha woman present.

Shatner, Part 2: Free Enterprise.   In 1999, the "Shatnerverse" was created with the release of Free Enterprise. The film is about two Star Trek fans who are struggling to make it in Hollywood. During a time of personal crisis, they meet their idol, William Shatner (played by William Shatner), who may not be all that he appears to be.  In this episode of Commentary: Trek Stars, Max, John and Mike look at the first film in which Shatner plays himself. We discuss our thoughts on the film, Shatner's performance, and whether or the movie successfully launches the "Shatnerverse". We also debate whether or not the film played at the Biograph Theater in Chicago.   Running Time: 44 minutes 39 seconds   Hosts Max Hegel, John Mills and Mike Schindler   Editor and Producer Mike Schindler   Production Manager Richard Marquez   Content Coordinator Will Nguyen   Associate Producer Become one! Between 2007 and 2010 more than 50 patients with spontaneous dissections of cervical arteries have been examined and scanned with a modified cervical MRI and fluorodeoxyglucose (18F) PET CT protocol at the Institute of Clinical Radiology, LMU Munich. Within this prospective, mono-centric study all imaging data was obtained by using a 3.0 tesla scanner (Magnetom Verio; Siemens Healthcare) and two PET CT scanners (Philips Gemini; Philips Healthcare and Siemens Biograph 64; Siemens Healthcare). This study was based on and conducted by a strong cooperation between the Department of Neurology and the Department of Nuclear Medicine. Detailed data sets regarding patient history and clinical parameters were recorded for every patient. The MRI protocol included a time-of-flight angiography, fat-saturated T1- and T2- weighted black-blood sequences before and after the administration of contrast medium (Gadovist®, Bayer-Schering). The scans covered the supra-aortic vessels from the aortic arch to the base of the skull with a best in plane resolution of 0.5 x 0.5 mm2. Every patient received an additional diffusion-weighted brain-MRI for evaluation of ischemia. The supra-aortic vessels of the same patients were also scanned by a low dose FDG/PET-CT. Measurements of standardized uptake values for every vessel segment were obtained after the administration of the tracer (activity: 5 MBq/kg bodyweight). The calculated effective dose was 8 mSv per patient. Along with quantitative PET-CT analysis, experienced radiologists performed qualitative evaluation of vessel wall inflammation for PET-CT and the MR images. Local inflammatory changes at the site of dissection were distinguished from generalized inflammation of the vascular system.

Science Fiction altert bekanntlich schnell.
