I bring you a great story of…drive. And the fruition I find most people experience, where we start off in life driven by our base desires and find the shallowness and meaninglessness of it and wonder if this is all life has to offer. I've known of Scott Harrison for many years, but never got the chance to dig into his story and drive myself. Scott is founder of charity:Water and has literally put a dent in the global clean water crisis. He's been so successful, not only do celebrities want to hang with him, but he's become a celebrity himself. Scott's story began by abandoning his faith-based upbringing to spend almost 10 years as a nightclub promoter in New York City. He had great success in driving other people to drink themselves into oblivion and made the nightclubs a lot of money. He was literally paid to party and he imbibed to the fullest degree with drugs, alcohol, sex and everything that goes along with it. As his soul began to dry up, he took a sabbatical to volunteer on a hospital ship as a photojournalist. While in Africa he witnessed people drinking out of a cesspool of water he wouldn't have used to clean his glasses. He returned to New York City two years later and put his promotional skills to work to found the non-profit organization charity: water in 2006. Scott has not only made a global impact for clean water but today he's changing how we view and do charity at large. Following is my conversation with Scott to understand what has driven him. You'll hear his story and his infectious drive for his chosen devotion, clean water. You may not want to devote yourself to clean water, but this show will increase your drive to devote yourself to what you feel called to. You can get Scott's full story in his book, Thirst: A Story of Redemption, Compassion, and a Mission to Bring Clean Water to the World. Got a comment or question about an episode? This is part 2 of my podcast about the nonprofit organization Charity:Water. I read its founder Scott Harrison's bestselling book Thirst: A Story of Redemption, Compassion and a Mission to Bring Clean Water to the World and fell in love with the organization and all it does to provide clean water to millions of people all over the world. I interviewed its chief global water officer Cristoph Gorder in Ep. #109 so if you have not listened to that episode, please do. In this episode, my guest is Tyler Riewer who is a creative director and focuses on telling the story of what Charity:water is doing and how over 111,000 clean water projects are impacting millions of people in 29 countries. He has traveled to many countries and describes for us some of those projects, particularly in Nepal and Cambodia. Now women and girls, who were previously burdened with the task of finding and carrying water in heavy containers every day for their families, no longer have to. Not only have the health of the people dramatically improved by drinking clean water, but also communities thrive with the ease of access. To learn more about all it has done and is doing, please visit its website link below. Do you know that there are millions of people all over the world who still do not have access to clean water? Do you know that there is a nonprofit named Charity:Water that has been dedicated to providing clean water access through water projects? I did not know either of these things and I am ashamed to admit it. It was not until I read the NY Times bestselling book Thirst: A Story of Redemption, Compassion and a Mission to Bring Clean Water to the World that I realized the desperate need of people in so many countries for clean water, the diseases and sicknesses that adults and children suffer from drinking dirty water, and all that this amazing organization is doing. Its founder Scott Harrison, the author of the book, has built an impressive operation that is now in 29 countries providing people with this basic necessity. I reached out to Charity:Water to be on my podcast so that you can learn more about all that it is doing and the tremendous impact it has made. This is part 1 with Christoph Gorder who is its chief global water officer and who is on the executive and administrative side, instrumental in overseeing clean water programs. You will learn all about Charity:Water and its goals and accomplishments. Part 2 will be next month with Tyler Riewer, who most recently has been on the ground in Nepal for Charity:Water. Learn about Scott Harrison's pursuit of saving the world: https://www.charitywater.org/foster-web-marketing Scott Harrison is the founder of charity: water, a non-profit organization with a mission to bring clean, drinkable water to everyone around the world. Scott started the charity in 2006 after volunteering as a photographer on a hospital ship off the coast of Liberia for two years. He decided he wanted to make clean water his mission since 1 out of 10 people in the world are still drinking unclean water. Scott was recognized in Fortune’s “40 Under 40,” Forbes’ “Impact 30,” and was ranked 10th in Fast Company’s “100 Most Creative People in Business.” He is also the author of The New York Times bestseller, Thirst: A Story of Redemption, Compassion, and a Mission to Bring Clean Water to the World. In this episode, you’ll learn: How having it all doesn’t equal a fulfilled feeling: Scott was living the “good” life as a club promoter, making tons of money, and hanging out with celebrities. He tells the story of how he woke up one morning with health issues and was faced with his mortality. About a life-changing experience that led to a new mission: Scott spent two years working on a hospital ship in Liberia and saw first-hand how dirty water caused a variety of health problems for the people there. He returned to New York City in 2006 with a mission to bring clean water around the world. How 100% of donations go to the cause: Scott knew many people were skeptical of charities and where their money was actually going. He explains how charity: water is funded by businesses and entrepreneurs, so all donations go to providing clean water. What you can do to get involved in the mission: Scott says charity: water has helped 12 million people get clean water, but there is more work to do. Find out how you can get involved and help people around the world.
We were sitting in our kitchen a couple weeks ago when Adrian pulled up this video for us to watch. It went over Scott Harrison’s journey, how he got clarity on his mission to bring clean water to the world, and why he started charity: water to accomplish that goal. 14 later, charity: water has raised over $496 million and funded over 59,000 water projects in 29 countries, providing water for over 11 million people with clean, safe drinking water once all those projects are done. That’s such an incredible impact, but Scott is just getting started. There are still 785 MILLION people around the world who don’t have access to clean drinking water, with thousands of children dying each day as a result. That sucks. But here’s the silver lining: we know how to help every single one of them. It only costs $40/month to give one person clean water, the systems are in place to do it through charity:water and other organizations, and we just need more resources. So, if you’re able to, we strongly encourage everyone to join The Spring and do what you can to solve this problem. Jaran and Reagan talk about books they've been reading. Jaran read "Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis" by J. D. Vance (he read it a long time ago but is only now talking about it), and Reagan read "Thirst: A Story of Redemption, Compassion, and a Mission to Bring Clean Water to the World" by Scott Harrison. Before today’s guest embarked on his mission to save millions of lives, he had to save his own. Scott Harrison was one of New York City’s premier nightclub promoters, doing drugs, drinking heavily, deeply unfulfilled and on the verge of self-destructing. In today’s podcast episode, he tells me his riveting story of how he came to declare spiritual, moral, and emotional bankruptcy – and uses it as a catalyst to change the world… Now, Scott has made lists such as Fortune’s 40 Under 40, Forbes’ Impact 30, and was #10 on Fast Company’s 100 most creative people in business, as well as a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader. He is the CEO and founder of Charity Water, an organization dedicated to helping people in developing nations get access to clean and safe drinking water. Charity Water has provided clean drinking water to over 8.5 million people in 26 countries. I’ve been enamored with Scott’s story, passion, and vision – which are the basis of his new book, Thirst: A Story of Redemption, Compassion, and a Mission to Bring Clean Water to the World. Today, he joins the podcast to share insights from his remarkable journey and personal transformation, in a way that can inspire you to do the same. For those of you who are new to the Enneagram and listening, Eights are called the Challengers. Sometimes they're called the Boss. Eights are typically people who are real forces of nature in the world. They live larger than life. The deadly sin or passion of Eights is lust. That doesn't necessarily mean in the sexual sense of the word, although Eights do have a hunger for excess in every area of life. For those of you who don't know, it's a lust for intensity. They just want immediate engagement with other people. They walk in a room and think where's the engagement, where's the juice? They go right to where the energy is and want to either challenge it or engage it or just feed on it. This intensity is easy to spot in an Eight’s concern with justice. Eights are very concerned with standing up for the underdog. They love to defend the defenseless, to be the voice of the voiceless. It gives them great satisfaction to stand in the line of fire for people who are vulnerable. And you’ll hear that in my conversation with today’s guest, Scott Harrison. If you haven’t heard of Scott yet, he spent almost 10 years as a successful nightclub promoter in New York City before leaving to volunteer on a hospital ship off the coast of Liberia, West Africa as a volunteer photojournalist. Returning home to New York City two years later, he founded the non-profit organization charity: water in 2006. Turning his full attention to the global water crisis and the world’s 663 million people without clean water to drink, he created public installations and innovative online fundraising platforms to spread international awareness of the issue. In eleven years, with the help of more than over 1 million donors worldwide, charity: water has raised more than $300 million and funded over 28,000 water projects in 26 countries. When completed, those projects will provide over 8.2 million people with clean, safe drinking water. Scott has recently been recognized in Fortune Magazine’s 40 under 40 list, the Forbes Magazine Impact 30 list and was recently #10 in Fast Company’s 100 Most Creative People in Business issue. He is currently a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader. His new book, Thirst: A Story of Redemption, Compassion, and a Mission to Bring Clean Water to the World (published on October 2, 2018), recounts the twists and turns that built charity: water into one of the most trusted and admired nonprofits in the world. Scott Harrison is the founder and CEO of one of my favorite non-profits: charity:water which has brought clean water to 8.49 million people around the world. They’ve raised $320 million to date—and put it to good work. Scott just released his first book Thirst: A Story of Redemption, Compassion, and a Mission to Bring Clean Water to the World and it’s about time. He’s an incredible storyteller and, both in his book and in this episode of the podcast, he shares stories of personal struggles, vices, darkest times and their ensuing transformation with vulnerability and openness. This episode is also a crash course in marketing through story. Scott’s rowdy past as a nightclub promoter taught him how to get people excited about joining his party, and he brought those skills to charity: water. He shares many of his tactics, and foundational frameworks about how to reinvent an industry through language and transparency. In this episode, you'll also be glad to know: If you feel lost, morally bankrupt, or you’re on the wrong path, ask yourself what it would look like if you did the exact opposite of what you’re doing now. Sometimes bouncing between extremes helps us find our way. There is a difference between mission and vision and succeeding in both areas requires different approaches. There is opportunity in any market if you can find a different way to look at it. It used to be common practice for charities to use guilt based marketing; i.e. you should feel bad for what you have, so donate some of it. Scott saw this as an opportunity to get people excited about donating their resources, which was a huge part of charity: water’s success. For more on Scott's story, visit thirstbook.com. 100% of the net proceeds from his book go to charity: water. Enjoy! Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive. CreativeLive is the world's largest hub for online creative education in photo/video, art/design, music/audio, craft/maker and the ability to make a living in any of those disciplines. Scott Harrison was living a life that was as close to pure hedonism as you could come. He was on top of the world, getting paid to party and living utterly (and destructively) in the moment...in the worst wayEventually, falling apart physically and emotionally, Harrison found himself wondering, "what is the exact opposite of the life I'm now living?" And, then, remarkably, he set about living that alternative path. Paying to serve on a floating hospital ship off the coast of Liberia, he reconnected with a deeper mission to help others, with water as his focus.Scott then founded and is the CEO of charity: water, (https://www.charitywater.org/thirst) one of the fast-growing non-profits in history, that has mobilized over one million donors around the world to fund over 28,000 water projects in 26 countries that will serve more than 8.2 million people. This journey is detailed in his powerful new book, THIRST: A Story of Redemption, Compassion and a Mission to Bring Clean Water to the World (https://amzn.to/2poKHUH).In today's conversation, we dive deep into his personal journey, and also his current vision for both charity: water and the world of philanthropy in general.Check out our offerings & partners: The Great Courses PLUS: Get a full month of unlimited access for FREE, visit TheGreatCoursesPlus.com/goodlifeThe Farmer's Dog: Get free shipping & 50% off your two week trial of fresh, healthy food for your pup at TheFarmersDog.GOODLIFEBOMBAS: Get 20% off your first order, visit bombas.com/goodlife.
