Buffalo Bob's Jerky Review Welcome to The Guys Review, where we review media, products and experiences. **READ APPLE REVIEWS/Fan Mail**Mention Twitter DM group - like pinned tweetRead emailsTwitter Poll Buffalo Bob's Jerky By: MarcusHistory of Beef Jerky: preserving meat that the Quecha Indians, a South American native tribe, originally from the ancient Inca empire, used as far back as 1550. They called it charqui, which literally translates into "dried meat". The Spanish Conquistadors realized this was a great way to preserve meat. They called it Char'qui. When they arrived in North America, they found the native Americans also drying meat to preserve it. The name char'qui eventually became "jerky". Jerky allowed people to be able to store meat and then consume a high protein source when food was scarce. The early pioneers and cowboys came to rely on jerky as a main staple of their diet. Soon, various spices were added to enhance the flavors. Today, many flavors, meats and styles of jerky are produced for one of the world's most popular snacks. Beef Jerky Market: from https://www.factmr.com/report/2130/beef-jerky-marketBeef Jerky Market: Beef Jerky Market Share & Trends Analysis, By Nature (Natural, Organic), By Flavor (Original, Teriyaki, Peppered), By Distribution Channel (Indirect, Online Retailers) & By Region Forecast, 2018-2028 the U.S. market has the highest consumption of beef jerky. The growth in the retail sales of beef jerky was observed to be higher than the past years in the United States last year and it has been increasing. According to, https://www.ibisworld.com/industry-statistics/market-size/meat-jerky-production-united-states/, The market size, measured by revenue, of the Meat Jerky Production industry is $1.2bn in 2022. The market size of the Meat Jerky Production industry is expected to increase 0.8% ($9.6M) in 2022. The market size of the Meat Jerky Production industry in the US has grown 1.0% ($12M) per year on average between 2017 and 2022 ($72M in market growth). Buffalo Bobs and Zicks Speciality Meats: Finding info on Buffalo Bobs was difficult. The Buffalo Bobs website (https://www.buffalobobssnacks.com/) is incomplete and has virtually no info. It lists their 26 jerky and meat products, and that's about it. I found one website (https://www.bestbeefjerky.org/2017/08/buffalo-bobs-jerky-exotic-meats.html) that said Buffalo Bobs was owned by Mark Matthews, and based out of Petaluma, CA. I couldn't find ANYTHING else about Matthews or where exactly in Petaluma he or the company is located. On the same website, it said that Buffalo Bobs is produced by Zicks Speciality Meats in Berrien Springs, Michigan. So I contacted them and Garrett Zick, the Vice-President of Zicks and son of the owner/founder emailed me back. He said Zicks was started back in 1983 and that they're most proud of the Buffalo Bobs meat snacks. He also told me they acquired the Buffalo Bobs brand from a company by the same name in Minnesota in the 90's. Originally they processed about 1,000lbs a week, but are now up tto 10-15K a week. Their best selling product is the alligator cajun jerky (no stats given). I did reply asking about Mark Matthews and received no response from Garrett. I also asked if there were any combinations they developed that didn't make it or tasted awful. I suggested some future exotic flavors as well: stir fry panda, ethiopian elephant, vegemite koala, and maybe curried cobra. Top Five Trivia of beef jerky: 1) While the term "jerky" is relatively newer, humans have been smoking meat (like Tucker) for thousands of years. A study (https://link.springer.com/referenceworkentry/10.1007%2F978-1-4020-4425-0_8752) Meat Preservation in Ancient Egypt goes into how the ancient egyptians would process and store dried meat, fish, and birds.2) Beef jerky is a favorite of NASA astronauts, often asked to be sent as extra food.3) Not only humans enjoy jerky, fire ants have been observed cutting "tasty" parts of their meals and setting them out to dry. While red squirrels will cut mushrooms and set them on sunny branches to dry and eat later.4) June 12th is national jerky day.5) Beef jerky is highly regulated by the USDA and imports are even more complicated, some countries don't even allow jerky imports. This is why most jerky is produced and packaged locally. Taste the jerky. TOP 5Stephen:1 Breakfast club2 T23 Sandlot4 Back to the Future5 Mail order brides Chris:1. sandlots2. Guest Jin Guo | Jinghui Cheng Panelists Richard Littauer | Eriol Fox | Memo Esparza Show Notes Hello and welcome to Sustain Open Source Design! The podcast where we talk about sustaining open source with design. Learn how we, as designers, interface with open source in a sustainable way, how we integrate into different communities, and how we as coders, work with other designers. Today, we have two amazing guests, Jin Guo and Jinghui Cheng from Montréal. Jin is an Assistant Professor at McGill University in the School of Computer Science, and she received her Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame. She is particularly interested in the intersection between Software Engineering, Human-Computer Interaction, and Artificial Intelligence. Jinghui is an Assistant Professor at Polytechnique Montréal, where he directs the Human Centered Design Lab. His research combines the field of Human-Computer Interaction with Software Engineering. Today, we hear about Jin's grant she received from the Sloan Foundation, which is supporting the open source usability for scientific software. Jin and Jinghui go in depth about things scientific researchers use, some common problems around usability, the different research methods they are using in their studies, and how they incorporate the community aspect to their research. Also, they share advice on how to get involved with research happening on open source. Go ahead and download this episode now to learn more! [00:03:45] Jin explains more about the grant they were given from the Sloan Foundation. [00:05:49] Find out what kinds of open source code scientific researchers use and some common problems around usability. [00:09:04] Jin and Jinghui tell us about the different research methods they are doing. [00:12:41] Richard wonders what Jin and Jinghui are particularly interested in learning from their study that will help their future research and what are they trying to learn on an academic sense. [00:17:47] Eriol wonders if Jin and Jinghui had similar challenges when researching open source projects. [00:22:15] Jin and Jinghui share their thoughts on incorporating the community aspect to their research. [00:25:32] Richard wonders if Jin and Jinghui can share any ideas to designers, communities which have design focus, or open source in general, on how they can get involved with research happening on open source, besides reading papers, doing a PhD, or going to their workshops. [00:28:11] Eriol asks how Jinghui views end users as a kind of designer and what that might mean for how he's doing his work, and if these workshops are a way of doing that. [00:30:25] Jin expands more on her interest in AI and how that's going to work, and how she's going to get AI to play with designers and open source communities. [00:34:10] Find out where you can follow Jin and Jinghui on the internet. Quotes [00:05:16] “We're hoping to use this grant to help advance scientific software usability, but also use the end result from our projects to benefit open source usability as a whole.” [00:15:40] “For open source usability, I think the tooling is one aspect, but the ultimate goal for our improvement on the tooling is the mindset improvement.” [00:18:38] “As a researcher, ideally we would need to make more frequent and iterative collaborations with open source projects by either interviewing them or having scientific project ideas. Balancing with them and to see what is the relevance of our research with their real concerns.” [00:19:22] “One of the things we are currently planning on is to conduct some of the workshops that are going to invite the end users and the designers to be in the same place, to work together to observe their dynamics of communicating.” [00:23:47] “What we hope is to learn the boundary of communication between those more stereotyped communities, but to make them feel welcomed to communicate with each other regardless of their title or role.” [00:27:46] “Design conferences, they need to welcome more people rather than just really fashi fashionable flashy designers doing, well I don't know, stuff for evil clients.” (Eriol) Spotlight [00:35:36] Memo's spotlight is Jamstack. [00:35:57] Eriol's spotlights are FOSS Backstage and one of their favorite academia papers called, “Non-response, Social Exclusion, and False Acceptance: Gatekeeping Tactics and Usability Work in Free-Libre Open Source Software Development,” by Mikko Rajanen, Netta Iivari, and Arto Lanamäki [00:37:17] Richard's spotlight is JS Montreal. [00:37:41] Jinghui's spotlights are projects that influenced him and his research which are Atom, Jupyter notebook, and PyTorch. [00:38:44] Jin's spotlights are two projects that influenced her previous work and current work which are scikit-learn and Zotero. Today on the show, I'm answering your questions about queer representation in the media and how to maintain independence in a relationship. As someone who literally works 10 feet away from their partner all day, it's something I have thought about a lot! I also share my interview with the one and only, Joan Price. This 78 year old Senior Sexpert - by the way, happy birthday Joan! - spends her time talking out loud about senior sex. We talk about the myths that people have about sexuality and aging, share advice on how to navigate conversations with new sexual partners, and how humour is essential to great sex.
Sasha and Stella continue their series which peers behind the curtain of depth work with gender-questioning clients. Today, they weave in philosophy and psychology to discuss the importance of authenticity, happiness, and connectedness. They also explore the value of art in the slow evolving process of an emergent Self. Extended Notes How do you “break the ice,” as it were, with a gender-questioning teen? Sasha and Stella noticed that a lot of these children don't have “joy” in their lives. What does it mean to be authentic? So many teens feel different from others and they feel like no one else understands the feelings they're going through. A lot of gender-questioning teens are asking very common existential questions. It often shows up everywhere, really. Sasha often likes to ask what are some of the common triggers to her client's gender dysphoria. The answers are very interesting and insightful. Going from a child body to an adult body is very jarring. If a child is experiencing same-sex attraction, therapists really need to slow down in this process and explore. Everybody says they're pro-LGBTQ, but they just don't want it for themselves. There is a lot of bullying going on in schools when someone is gay or a lesbian — a lot of bullying. It's one thing to say you're okay with it, but it's quite another to be experiencing same-sex attraction physically. Sasha works a lot with helping her clients find their own voice that's not a reaction towards their parent's wishes. When parents are so adamant about what the “right thing” is for their children, the children end up doubling down even further. Sasha loves to do these “gender timelines” to help the child see how their views change over time. Stella really likes to go “behind the label.” Yes, they're calling themselves certain things, but let's dig deeper as to why. Some children also have a hard time accepting their very “ordinary” selves. Let's explore internal vs. external locus of control. Young people have been sold this idea that they can control how other people perceive them. Stella likes to encourage her clients to develop their own sense of style. Not develop a style based on “what they think it means to be trans.” What her clients come up with is often very freeing. Stella is also curious to understand whether medications are suppressing libidos and this means young teens feel like they have to question their gender more because they feel stuck and they're not progressing like their peers are. Nasty, brutish and short or the Garden of Eden? We explore the Return to Monke meme and ask whether we are right to yearn for a more primitive lifestyle. In this podcast, we examine our origins as hunter-gatherers and explore whether things were better or worse before we became civilised. We look at food scarcity, environmental damage, child mortality rates and a whole host of other fun stuff. We also address the morality of primitivism and consider what would actually happen if we all tried to Return to Monke. This insect caused millions of dollars in damage right around when the passenger pigeon was at its peak, but then suddenly disappeared never to plague the western US again. The plague in 1874 holds the Guinness Book of World Records title for the greatest concentration of animals ever speculatively guessed- nearly 12.5 trillion grasshoppers! But in only 28 years they would go from blacking out the sun to completely extinct. RHETORIC AN ASPECT OF CULTURE© 2020 VOL.1 ISBN978-976-96512-8-9 PODCASTAbstractly speaking when the word rhetoric first appeared on my intellectual lens to the extent of the observable world that was seen at any given moment, it conjured , words such as 'parenthesis,' 'apology,' even a ‘comma. However because of my intellectual curiosity and the relation with this topic which is so conceived and use by individual speakers or by society” implies being creative, productive and focus in achieving a desired effect.I decided to frame a close up view of this construct so as to draw attention to the specifics and detail of rhetoric designed to have a persuasive or impressive effect, and is often regarded as lacking in sincerity or meaningful content that might otherwise have gone unnoticed. While of course living an 80/20 or even 90/10 lifestyle leaves room for the occasional processed treat that may contain a few additives, it is important to know what is in the food that you eat on a regular basis and how it can affect you. Wieviel PR landet in journalistischen Stücken? A lot of stroke survivors I talk with describe themselves as "Lucky." I don't want to minimize the trauma or struggles that many survivors face. There are real challenges, and I don't recommend anyone go out and acquire a stroke, but luck is still a common theme. In my experience, I say I'm lucky because I have a great partner who has stuck with me. I got great care at the hospital. My stroke left me with physical disabilities, but no significant cognitive or language issues. And it opened my eyes to this whole fascinating world and community. I've talked with other folks who feel lucky because they have some cognitive challenges but no physical deficits. In episode 65, Joe Borges described his stroke as a blessing because of the way it rebooted his life. For former OT and corporate consultant, Janet Douglas, stroke was A Wonderful Stroke of Luck. And she wrote the book on it. Jan started her career working in OT in her native England. She would go on traveling the world with the World Health Organization, meet her future husband, become a Director at the Rehab Institute of Chicago, transition the world of corporate HR consulting, and in September of 2002, have a massive stroke. I find the pats people take to be fascinating. It seems completely random to go from OT into consulting at first glance. Take a deeper look, though, and it makes sense. Jan tells us in this interview how the transition was really just another type of OT, just on a larger scale. Bio Jan Douglas trained as an occupational therapist in her native England in the 1960s. The patients she least enjoyed working with were those who had suffered strokes. She found them slow, lacking in motivation and emotionally unstable. She specialized in the treatment of hand injuries, working at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in London and then served with the World Health Organization in its Africa and Southeast Asia regions. While working in Thailand, she met her American husband, an oral surgeon. After moving to the United States, Douglas became Director of Occupational Therapy Education at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and pursued a master’s degree in public health. After graduating, she worked at Grant Hospital of Chicago, first as Director of Occupational Therapy and then as the leader of a hospital- based occupational health program, providing services to industry, local government and universities. From there she joined the world’s largest human resources and risk management consulting firm. As a global business leader, she worked with public and private employers, government agencies and healthcare systems, to improve their human capital management. She currently provides human resources support to a refugee resettlement agency. Survivor Gift Shops Are you or do you know a Stroke survivor with an Etsy or similar online gift shop? Let me know. As we get closer to the Christmas season, I'm planning to feature survivor shops on a future episode so folks can buy gifts and support the community. Just email Bill@Strokecast.com. Giveaway We're giving away a copy of Jan's book to one listener. Share this episode on your social media with the link http://Strokecast.com/AWonderfulStrokeOfLuck and use the hashtag #Strokecast by the end of October. I'll search the hashtag at the beginning of November and pick one winner at random. Good luck talking about luck! Hack of the week If your doctor says you can drink wine, then YAY! Now you have to open the bottle. Jan discovered that a wine bottle fits in the garbage disposal in her sink securely. Now she puts a bottle in there and can use a corkscrew one handed to open the bottle. In this episode we go back into the 19th century to talk about the dispute between scientists who thought that all humans came from the same origin (monogenists) and those who were convinced that each race had a separate origin (polygenists). The latter group appear to still have an influence on racial attitudes in the U.S. pushing notions of difference rather than similarity between the races. We see this today especially in ideas about race and athleticism. We focus on Samuel George Morton, Josiah Clark Nott, George Gliddon, and Louis Agassiz. On this episode, I discuss my recent 5-day fast: how it went, what I learned, and whether I'll be doing it again. In the News & Views segment, we discuss a CNN article about fasting and longevity as well as a NY Times article that indicates intermittent fasting is becoming more widely accepted. You'll learn about a 450-lb man who did not eat food for over a year and reduced his body to a normal size. In the Moment of Paleo, I offer some ideas about when less is more. And After the Bell features a Dr. Jason Fung presentation about fasting as an important health tool. Enjoy the show!
