David began his medical career as medic, having served in the US Air Force and US Navy. Following high school David enlisted in the military and was forward deployed on active duty during the terrorists attacks of 9/11. He often sites 9/11 as a pivotal point in his military career, as the military to shifted from relative peace time oriented missions to war fighting. He is a recipient of several military decorations, including the Navy and Marine Corp Achievement Medal. Following his military career, David moved to Southern California and worked as an Emergency Room Technician at Balboa Naval Hospital and as a Patient Care Assistant at Tri City Medical Center. It was during this time that David began participating in medical relief missions in West Africa. It was these years and work that David cites as bringing the greatest clarity in his life and faith. David was born into incredibly difficult circumstances and as a young child, experienced a variety of living conditions, including homelessness. He was adopted around age 5 and believes much of his success is derived from the difficult experiences of his early childhood. The SDNEDC focuses on marketing economic development opportunities and amplifying positive news about the North County economy, helping North County employers grow by solving specific business challenges, and connecting K-16 educators and employers through events and individual meetings to strengthen workforce programs throughout North County. The San Diego North Economic Development Council recently released the results from a study on the COVID-19 impacts along the 78 Corridor. The study found that nearly 36,000 jobs were lost. These numbers were extremely high in the hospitality, restaurant and retail sectors. John Byrom has worked closely with the NCPC and explains that NCPC supports San Diego County's four main prevention initiatives including Binge and Underage Drinking prevention, Marijuana Prevention, the Meth Strike Force and the Rx Drug Task Force. Recently, NCPC held the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day and collected 741lbs of medications. Serena went to high school in Encinitas, CA, and graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Occidental College in 1994, with a major in Sociology and a minor in Spanish. While attending Occidental, Serena developed serious physical and mental health symptoms and was diagnosed with two health conditions that greatly changed the course of her life: bipolar disorder and Crohn's disease. Based on what she has learned, Serena has been able to achieve a level of wellness that makes it possible for her to pursue her dreams and goals and to live a healthy and happy life. Serena currently works as a Peer Support Specialist at North Coastal Mental Health Center in Oceanside, CA and does individual and group counseling with clients diagnosed with what are termed “severe and persistent” mental illnesses. Serena is also a student in the Master of Social Work Program at California State University San Marcos. Serena's career goals are to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, to contribute her experience and knowledge about recovery to the field of mental health, to reduce stigma around mental illness, and to change mental health policies on a national level in order to create more person-centered and recovery-oriented mental health services in the United States and beyond.
