Students at UC Davis just won an historic victory by passing a bill that divests all student funds from apartheid Israel. I spoke with three of the women who were instrumental in making this happen, including the political director, the president, and the social media coordinator for the UC Davis chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP). We discussed the magic moment when the bill passed, the work that went into this success, and how they are helping to empower students at other universities to achieve similar victories.Already, students at many other UCs have followed suit, passing a similar divestment bills and resolutions. (UC Riverside,  UC Los Angeles, UC Santa Cruz, and UC San Diego). We hope this is just the beginning of an avalanche of university divestment victories like those that were vital to the end of South African apartheidLINKS:SJP at UCD LinktreeFollow @sjpatucd2 and @sjpatucd on Instagram!Follow @sjpatucdavis on Twitter!Shamouti Sour(The name is a tribute to the Palestinian people and their connection to the fruits of their land, as Shamouti oranges originate from Yaffah -- an occupied city in Palestine)      60ml   Orange juice (fresh if possible)      22ml   Lemon juice       8ml     Simple syrup      22ml   Olive brine Combine all ingredients in a shaker tin and shake briefly with ice. This is part 2 of LUL's Latinas in Politics series and you’re in for a treat. Meet Dr. Monica Sanchez who shares her journey into politics with open vulnerability and tales of immense grit. Both a UC Berkeley and UC Los Angeles alumna, Dr. Sanchez shares what it takes to persevere. If you spend time thinking of all the reasons why you can’t do something, listen to Dr. Sanchez to understand how you always can. Less than 1% of Latinas earn PhD’s and Dr. Sanchez did it. Latinas are all too often underrepresented in high-power careers and Dr. Sanchez is at the table. Dr. Sanchez broke through the microaggressions and underrepresentation to become a City Council member in her respective city where a woman hadn't served in this capacity for 10+ years. She is still the only woman holding a seat even though her city is 50% female. She was a delegate for the Democratic Party and does it all as a single-mother and thriving Latina. Don’t miss this wonderful episode highlighting what it takes to stay the course in male-dominated careers and as a first-generation/teen mom. Thank you for your time and talent Dr. Sanchez. Your journey is admirable beyond measure.

Please join me tonight on the Segment as I am joined by Dr. Mike Welch as I get a chance to ask him some questions about the Covid-19 Vaccines. As many of you know I was vaccinated a few days ago and thought I would Vlog about it. For me I didn't have any of the scary side effects people talk about. In fact I didn't even feel the shot but I know that I got it because I watched it go in. My anxiety about the vaccine went down as the days moved forward. So I thought I would bring an expert in the field of Allergy and Immunology on the show to give us the unbiased clinical data around the Covid 19 vaccines. My hope is that this episode will give you enough information to make the best choice for you around the vaccine. Dr. Michael Welch is a physician in the Allergy/Immunology Division of Rady Children's Hospital-San Diego, co-director of the Allergy and Asthma Medical Group and Research Center in San Diego and a clinical professor in the Division of Allergy and Immunology in the Department of Pediatrics at UC San Diego. Dr. Welch earned his medical degree from UC Los Angeles before completing an internship and residency in pediatrics and a fellowship in allergy/immunology at the same institution. He then conducted an extra year of clinical immunology research at the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation in La Jolla. Board-certified in allergy and immunology, Dr. Welch is a fellow of both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. He is involved in numerous professional organizations, having served as president of the San Diego Allergy Society and the California of Immunology and chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Allergy and Immunology. He is also certified by the Academy of Pharmaceutical Physicians and Investigators. An active author, editor and lecturer, Dr. Welch has been published in numerous scientific medical journals and is the editor-in-chief of the book Guide to Your Child's Allergies and Asthma, directed to families affected by allergies and asthma. His research center has been involved in over 650 clinical trials investigating pharmacotherapeutics for allergic disease. Dr. Welch has been honored as Physician Citizen of the Year by the San Diego County Medical Society for his volunteer contributions to the community, and noted in San Diego Magazine as "Top Doctor in San Diego" for 11 out of the last 13 years.
