Ziem Nguyen Neubert, Executive Director of Project Cornerstone at the YMCA of Silicon Valley, joins us to discuss the topic of loneliness. Ziem leads an amazing team, working with school and community partners to support youth social and emotional well-being. Over 20 years of experience in education – serving as a teacher, coordinator, assistant principal, and principal – has been instrumental in supporting her work in building relationships and driving the vision for Project Cornerstone. Ziem is passionate about fostering positive skills, relationships, experiences, and honest conversations to create safe, caring, and equitable communities in Silicon Valley and beyond. Today, Project Cornerstone works with over 180 schools, reaching 62,000 students annually with the help of over 4,000 volunteers. Topics Covered:     Loneliness defined Social media connectedness and loneliness Misconceptions around loneliness Friendships and different kinds of connections 3 ways we take care of ourselves: assess, plan, act   3     Episode Takeaways   1.   We may not want to get rid of loneliness – if we never experience sadness how will we experience joy? It's also a way to kick ourselves into gear and take some action when we notice it. It's chronic loneliness we need to watch for.   2.   Social media isn't all bad but may not be as meaningful to us as a way to connect with others. It's the choices we make. While the social tools can assist us in connecting and be convenient/fast, we have the choice to connect this way or pick up the phone or make a plan to visit someone. 3.   There are a number of misconceptions around loneliness: like quantity matters, to feel lonely isn't normal, we should feel shameful if we get lonely, loneliness only happens to “old” people, and introverts are lonelier than extroverts (we all need along alone time to recharge). Friendship is a key way to address loneliness but it's good to assess, plan, and take action when choosing friends.   Ziem's Resources The BIG document – report: “Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation – The U.S. Surgeon General's Advisory on the Healing Effects of Social Connection and Community”       https://www.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/surgeon-general-social-connection-advisory.pdf   “US surgeon general Vivek Murthy: ‘Loneliness is like hunger, a signal we're lacking something for survival'” (January 29, 2024) https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2024/jan/29/us-surgeon-general-vivek-murthy-loneliness-mental-health-epidemic-social-media   “New Surgeon General Advisory Raises Alarm about the Devastating Impact of the Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation in the United States” (May 3, 2023)      https://www.hhs.gov/about/news/2023/05/03/new-surgeon-general-advisory-raises-alarm-about-devastating-impact-epidemic-loneliness-isolation-united-states.html “Loneliness Among Teens Has Increased Over the Years Violence, depression, and radicalization realities are telling.” (May 30, 2022)    https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/cultural-neuroscience/202205/loneliness-among-teens-has-increased-over-the-years   Card or Gift Items Ziem Liked from Our Store https://girltaketheleadpod.com/shop       Lotus Heart with the sentiment: “I carry your heart with me – I carry it in my heart”  e.e. cummings.     How to reach Ziem:   LinkedIn account: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ziem-neubert/ eMail: ziem@projectcornerstone.org Website: www.projectcornerstone.org You can make a donation there. Healing with Aloha Podcast Host Deslynn Jaquias Special guests Hinano Tanieluand Namuali'i Tofa from ManuScript Films discuss the journey, struggles, and perseverance of creating their first ever film Sosefina Polynesian American movie which will be released on May 14 in Utah. SOSEFINA, a new Drama/Romance Polynesian American feature film, has announced its official release in the United States May 2022. A self-funded, self-taught film by Taleni Tanielu, Namuali'i Tofa, Hinano and Manu Tanielu, a family of Pacific Islanders. SOSEFINA is an inspirational and motivational story based on the true experiences of a Pacific island girl who is challenged to overcome adversity and personal struggles, and must decide whether to continue on the straight and narrow or enter the seedy world of adult entertainment. An important cultural work that speaks to the core of Pacific Islander identity, SOSEFINA shares a story that is not typically promoted in the traditionally strict and reserved Pacific Islander culture. The drama and romance story encourages a new generation of Pacific Islanders in the United States and around the world to embrace who they are, share their stories, and create their own opportunities in the world around us. The film stars lead actor Diamond Langi, the 2019 Ms. Universe New Zealand, along with supporting actor Lehi Falepapalangi from Hulu's "Future Man," Netflix's "Naked Director," and "Doogie Kamealoha, M.D" and others from across the continental United States. Many involved with the project were first-time filmmakers and up-and coming actors, yet all have established a name for themselves with their talented work on this film. Hinano Tanielu born and raised in Santa Ana, CA. Hinano and her husband Manu decided to relocate to Utah along with their kids Chylen, Manu Jr. and Mahealani. Manu & Hinano are Polynesian-American filmmakers based in St. George, Utah. Co-founder of ManuScript Films, specializing in films for Polynesian audiences, focusing on empowering our culture through visual storytelling and music arts. It's rare that we read through Supreme Court cases here on Virtual Legality, but when the implications are as potentially significant as those in today's holding in "Apple Inc v Pepper", well, we had to dive in. In Apple Inc v Pepper, the Supreme Court has found that under the United States antitrust laws Apple *can* be sued by purchasers of phones and tablets for damages arising out Apple's 30% "cut" of App Store developer revenues. But what does that really mean for the future of the Apple App Store? For the immediate future of Apple and the iPhone and iPad? And why should Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony all be paying very close attention? Who made the decision, and why is this particular 5-4 split so interesting? Why could the Court's contract law based findings hold the answer for all game and software platform creators? And what does the dissent have to say about all of this? It's Supreme Court time for Virtual Legality. CHECK OUT THE VIDEO AT: https://youtu.be/urSG6eltMxk #Apple #SupremeCourt #VirtualLegality *** Discussed in this episode: "Apple Inc. v. Our speaker will share his personal journey as he discusses the impact of experiencing the stigma of having a family member with mental illness, personally being bullied in school and suffering the effects of the early symptoms of schizophrenia. As an adult, how does one cope and go on to lead a fulfilling life of service? Speaker: Dr Austin Mardon Austin Mardon was born in Edmonton but raised in Lethbridge where he finished his degree at the University of Lethbridge. While an undergraduate geography student, he was accepted as a field scientist on the ASMET NSF/NASA sponsored Antarctic meteorite recovery expedition. His descent into mental illness slowly started after he returned from Antarctica suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. He was able to complete two additional graduate degrees in the USA before suffering a complete breakdown, and was subsequently diagnosed with schizophrenia. The first thing Austin was told after being diagnosed was that his life was over. However it was not, as he continued on to finish a distance PhD and then established Prosper Place Clubhouse in Edmonton, a place where adults with mental illness can safely learn to live with their illness. He has also served on numerous committees and boards. Currently he serves on the Premier's Council on the status of persons with disabilities and the Alberta College of social workers. Dr. Mardon received the order of Canada in 2007 and has received high awards from SSC and CMHA. This year he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Alberta and the Medal of Honor, highest award for a non physician, from the CMA. Austin Mardon and his father Ernest have collaborated in writing several books on Alberta's history. He lives in Edmonton with his wife Catherine and his Bassett hound Gandy.
