A Control Theory of LLM Prompting.” (the main theorem on self-attention controllability was developed in collaboration with Dr. Shi-Zhuo Looi from Caltech). They frame LLM systems as discrete stochastic dynamical systems. This means they look at LLMs in a structured way, similar to how we analyze control systems in engineering. They explore the “reachable set” of outputs for an LLM. Essentially, this is the range of possible outputs the model can generate from a given starting point when influenced by different prompts. The research highlights that prompt engineering, or optimizing the input tokens, can significantly influence LLM outputs. They show that even short prompts can drastically alter the likelihood of specific outputs. Aman and Cameron's work might be a boon for understanding and improving LLMs. They suggest that a deeper exploration of control theory concepts could lead to more reliable and capable language models. Maria de Goeij provides a brilliant introduction to reflexive control theory, a Soviet theory of influence. Listen to learn more and appreciate how it can help us better understand today's world, including strategic decision making in hybrid warfare. Reflexive control theory is a theory of influence that was developed in the 1960s, in Soviet Russia. During this lecture Maria will talk about the cybernetic origins of the theory, what we know about reflexive control, and what we do not know about it. She'll then talk about why this under-researched theory from Soviet times is important to take into account in the todays world and how it can help us think about strategic decision making in hybrid warfare. Maria works as an analyst for Thomson Reuters Special Services International and is a Visiting Research Fellow at the Changing Character of War Centre. Before joining TRSSI, Maria has worked for several think tanks in the Netherlands, the UK, and Montenegro. In addition to this, she has been working for several organisations as an analyst and advisor, and has considerable experience of all issues relating to hybrid and grey zone warfare. Throughout her career, Maria specialised in the analysis of military thought and grand strategy, and strategic influence and statecraft. Her specific interest has been focused on improving contextual situational awareness, finding (qualitative and quantitative) patterns in conflict, including patterns of state and non-state actor behaviour, and the development of early warning systems. Together with the foregoing, her academic interests include the modelling of reflexive control theory. Maria has a BA degree in European Studies, with a specialism in diplomacy, from The Hague University and an MSc degree in Crisis and Security Management from Leiden University.
Controlling the behaviour and output of microorganisms is one of the most important pieces in the biotechnology puzzle. Without an improved level of control in biology, it is difficult to create consistent results from engineered organisms. Future prospects hope to allow genetic circuits to be designed on a computer and to accurately predict the effect of these gene circuits when they are inserted into living bacteria. Another topic discussed is the benefits of co-culturing bacteria in order to activate gene clusters that are turned off when a bacteria strain is cultured alone. Alongside Edward Snowden, he worked on the Introspection Engine, a device allowing journalists to identify if and when their phones are transmitting or receiving information when it shouldn't be. The future of tech-related disciplines lies in an interdisciplinary approach to teaching. Professor Stephan Simons believes that industrial, electric, and mechatronics engineers shall find their way into working together. Stephan is an electrical engineer; he has a major in Control Theory and a Ph.D. in Robotics. He worked in medical technology for more than 11 years, where he developed some of the respiratory care systems used today to fight COVID. He had a passage in a company initially owned by Siemens, Sirona Dental Medicine. In 2006, he decided to move to the automation technology business. After Siemens bought UGS, Stephan found a way of combining his interests - automation technology, software business, and medical technology. In his own words, "It's all mechatronics."The new normality pushed everyone deeper into the digital world; that should sound ideal for electrical engineers and robotics students, but it is not. Students need both a combination of the digital and the real thing. “You create your opportunities by asking for them”Norman Vincent Peale said “Change your thoughts and you can change your world.” Think about a time in your life when you had an idea or an opportunity that really excited you, something that would require you to push beyond the borders of your comfort zone. Perhaps it was asking for a promotion or a raise, or maybe you wanted to ask someone out to dinner, but the very thought made you nervous or uncomfortable. Did you adhere to those boundaries, or did you choose to move beyond them, undaunted? Consider how decisions you’ve made to be bold and embrace the power of asking have impacted your life. Think about the connections that asking has created, and doors that have opened as a result. Looking back, do you regret taking any of those leaps? It’s important to recognize that when it comes to making big moves, we can give fear too much power to dictate our actions. But we don’t have to. Today’s guest comes from my very own alma mater, the University of South Florida. Robert Bishop is Dean at the USF College of Engineering in beautiful Tampa. He’s recognized as a Distinguished Teaching Professor and Researcher in Aerospace Engineering, and he's a specialist in the Application of Systems and Control Theory to modern engineering products. Through serving on the University of South Florida's College of Engineering advisory board alongside Dean Bishop, I’ve seen how his fearless mindset has transformed the department and inspired growth and innovation. He’s someone who understands first hand the remarkable power of asking. Robert Bishop has co-authored with astronauts, sat down with Presidents, met brilliant artists, and he’s chilled backstage with rockstars. All of this happened through the simple power of asking. We create a lot of complex reasons in order to justify our fears, giving ourselves permission to refrain from asking bold questions that have the potential to alter the direction of our lives. Jadin Tredup is an Electrical Engineering PhD candidate at UNLV, with a focus in Control Systems, Machine Learning, and Computational Neuroscience. Upon moving to Las Vegas at a young age, Jadin attended the Las Vegas Academy of Arts where he focused on music. After graduating, he decided to stay in Las Vegas and attend UNLV with a focus in musical engineering. At one point he even went off to Spain for an additional 6-week course in sound production. This is where Jadin decided to pivot to electrical engineering. During his Master's Program Jadin built a Brain Computer Interface and was featured on the cover of UNLV's Engineering Department Magazine. Jadin has created a field on his own in Computational Neuroscience and is focused on creating a Brain Computer Interface for non-verbal communicators. Julian Edward is a Professor and the Director of the Learning Assistant Program at Florida International University¬. He received his Ph.D. at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology under the supervision of Richard Melrose. His main area of research is analysis and partial differential equations. Die Arbeit entstand in enger Zusammenarbeit mit Christian Fleck und Andrea Flexeder von der Firma BOSCH (Abt. Control Theory). In einer Zeit, in der klar wird, das Erdöl als Energielieferant sehr bald ersetzt werden muss, ist die Suche nach alternativen Antriebsarten im Transport von hoher Priorität. Die populärste ist das Elektrofahrzeug, auch wenn es noch immer darum kämpft, sich in den Köpfen der Menschen zu etablieren. Ein wesentlicher Grund dafür ist die sehr begrenzte Speicherkapazität und die lange Ladezeit der in diesen Fahrzeugen eingebauten Akkumulatoren (*). Wir sind von Verbrennungsmotoren an eine große Reichweite und große Flexibilität gewöhnt. Wenn Elektroautos dieselben Anforderungen erfüllen sollen wie Benzinautos, spielen die Akkus und deren Laderegime(s) eine zentrale Rolle. Automobilzulieferer wie BOSCH oder MAHLE entwickeln schon jetzt einen beträchtlichen Teil der Technologie und Software, die in modernen Fahrzeugen steckt. Nun kommt die Entwicklung von zukunftsträchtigen Akkus als neues Thema und Produkt hinzu. Das Ziel der Masterarbeit von Frau Auinger war es, eine intelligente Ladestrategie zu finden, die zwei Aspekte des Batteriesystems minimiert: die Zeit, die benötigt wird, um die Batterie vollständig aufzuladen, und den Kapazitätsverlust des Akkus, der durch die Ladung verursacht wird. Eine gleichzeitige Minimierung ist jedoch problematisch, da beide Ziele im Allgemeinen nicht gemeinsam erreicht werden können: Eine minimale Ladezeit führt in der Regel zu einem hohen Kapazitätsverlust und umgekehrt. Der Grund hierfür ist, dass zur Verkürzung der Ladezeit mit höheren Strömen aufgeladen werden muss, was wiederum zu einer kürzeren Lebensdauer der Akkus führt. So gewinnen intelligente Ladestrategien an Bedeutung, bei denen der Ladestrom einem vorgegebenen Profil folgt, der den Verlust der Lebensdauer minimiert und die Ladezeit akzeptabel kurz hält. Diese Protokolle lassen sich als Lösungen für optimale Steuerungsprobleme bestimmen. In der Praxis erfordert dies Algorithmen, die Lösungen in Echtzeit liefern, was das Ziel dieser Masterarbeit war. Zu Beginn dieses Projektes lag eine Formulierung des Steuerungsproblem von Carolin Eckhard vor, das von ihr durch eine einfache Implementierung in Matlab gelöst worden war. Das Modell der Lithium-Ionen-Batterie besteht darin aus drei Teilen: Ein Zellspannungsmodell, ein Zelltemperaturmodell und ein Alterungsmodell, das den Kapazitätsverlust in der Zelle beschreibt. Da der Code nicht für Echtzeitzwecke taugte, wurde er von Adrian Tardieu beschleunigt, indem er Gradientenprojektionsmethoden einsetzte. In der Arbeit von Frau Auinger wurde ein vereinfachtes optimales Ladeproblem hergeleitet für das eine analytische Lösung mit Hilfe von Pontrjagin's Satz berechnet werden kann. Diese dient als erste Trajektorie im iterativen Algorithmus, was das Verfahren in der Regel beschleunigt.
