The National Weather Service, for example, instructed hunters and outdoor recreationists to be prepared for winter conditions in the Utah mountains. This type of storm is not unusual for the month of October — and even the second half of September — in this geography, the tops of mountains. On Saturday, October 9, at 5:30 a.m., the race started off as planned in Kaysville, Utah. This town is just north of Salt Lake City in Davis County, the namesake of DC in the race name. Runners were excited for this autumn ultra, to run a rugged course that traversed the mountain range above the northern Salt Lake City suburbs, including Francis Peak and Bountiful Peak. The more prepared runners had seen the weather forecast and knew the event's high passages, and packed their running vests accordingly with jackets and gloves, some even bringing pants as a precaution. Kelly Sparks, the Davis County Sheriff, spoke about the shock it was to get a call of this magnitude. “It's pretty rare, in our part of the country, to get a call that so many people are in need of assistance. We usually deal with groups of twos and threes. We got the call at about 9:30 a.m. that there were runners out on this high altitude course that needed assistance. We sent some SAR people on foot, some on snowmobile, and some on four-wheelers. Some went from the front of the course going forward, and others went from the midpoint backtracking. We needed to ensure everyone could get off safely.” When asked about the characterization in the initial media reports of runners being lost, Sheriff Sparks stated, “I don't think anyone was lost at that time, but the [race directors] realized that it could become a real situation, with the blowing snow and visibility. We needed to get people to a warm environment as fast as possible.” The DC Peaks 50 blizzard and athlete rescue is just the tip of the iceberg of this story. You have to understand where this this story starts with Jake Kilgore as a CEO of a major motorize wheelchair company and the journey to ultra trail running. Let's talk to Jake Kilgore. There are ton of details about Jake's experience that we did not get to: Kilgore, Jake. Trial Running: Learning Perseverance Through Life's Aid Stations (p. 41). Kindle Edition. The doctor's office is left with an Orbit prescription pad in order to make the referral process simple. This pad contains checkboxes and fields for the medical professional to order supplies and materials based on a patient's needs. Many reps would make minor changes to this prescription pad and other paperwork—adding a missed checkbox, filling in a date, or writing in “ninety-nine months” when the length of need is overlooked. Everyone knew it. The owners knew it, I knew it, and our internal reviewers knew it. Although this behavior was not permitted, everyone viewed these actions as not a big deal—and certainly not criminal. Kilgore, Jake. Trial Running: Learning Perseverance Through Life's Aid Stations (p. 36). Kindle Edition. I used every Sunday for a one-on-one phone call with each of my four kids, rotating through them oldest to youngest, one Sunday at a time. This was the best I could do to keep a close, private, trusted relationship with each child. I dedicated all fifteen minutes to that one child. If you only had fifteen private minutes a month, being recorded by the government, what would you ask your child? What would you talk about? Inmates were charged roughly three bucks for their fifteen minutes. Kilgore, Jake. Trial Running: Learning Perseverance Through Life's Aid Stations (p. 50). Kindle Edition. We heard the whispers, we saw the looks of “That's Jake Kilgore. The one who's going to prison soon. His poor wife and kids. Endurance News: GUSTAV IDEN POISED TO CAPTURE TITLE AS PTO WORLD NO. 1 Professional Triathletes Organisation today announced that Gustav Iden is poised to be crowned as PTO World No. 1 for 2021. In his victory in Florida over the weekend at his first long-distance race, Iden scored 107.23 PTO World Ranking Points, the second highest score for a full-distance race in 2021, just below the stellar performance of 2x World Champion Patrick Lange at Tulsa, where Lange scored 108.88 PTO World Ranking Points. Combined with Iden's 110.18 points scored at the IM 70.3 World Championship® and the 111.34 points he scored at The Collins Cup, this gives Iden a nearly unassailable average of 109.62 PTO World Ranking Points. With Jan Frodeno, PTO World No. 2, announcing that he is not expected to race again this season, Iden is set to finish the season as PTO World No. 1. This will be the first year since the PTO Rankings began in 2016 that Frodeno has not been PTO World No. 1 and might signal that the Changing of the Guard has well and truly begun. The PTO World Rankings are based on the average number of PTO World Ranking Points that an athlete has earned for their three best races in 2021. Frodeno's best three races are 112.86 points at The Collins Cup, 107.51 points at Challenge Miami and 88.10 points at Challenge Gran Canaria, giving him an average of 102.82 PTO World Rankings Points. Should Frodeno decide to race again before December 31 and was to score 108.52 or more PTO World Rankings Points, he would reclaim the PTO World No. 1 ranking. Coaches Corner: I have been using TriDot as an athlete for several months now. The more experience I have with it, the more I've come to appreciate how effective the training has been for me as an athlete. It's made me question how effective my designed training plans are compared to what TriDot provides. I design training plans and workouts based on my knowledge of my athlete, what I assess they are capable of, my training philosophy and what I think is the best future training based on what the athlete has achieved in the past. Summing this up. I'm taking all of an athlete's training data, combined with the filter of my professional training as a coach, my experience as an athlete and a coach, and my philosophies to create the perfect future workouts and training cycles. My crisis is admitting that my training plans are limited by my experience and filters. But this has caused me to ask the question, what coaching services that am I providing do athletes value most in a coaching relationship? Given all the challenges we are dealing with as a society right now, talking about bikes might seem unimportant. However, in fact, the topic of cycling, exercise, and inclusive environments is exactly on topic for this moment. Today’s guest is Lindsay Goldman, who was a professional cyclist as well as Director of Marketing for USA Cycling. Since our conversation, she has moved on to become the Director of Marketing at Eliel Cycling, as well as Wattie Ink. Linsday also was the Owner and GM of Hagens Berman Supermint Pro Cycling, a professional cycling team. While recorded before the pandemic and protests for Black Lives Matter and against police brutality, many of the themes we cover have resonance with the larger discussions going on right now. We explore the structural challenges toward getting women involved in cycling, and efforts to change that. Do women feel safe cycling in public? Is the broader cycling ‘community’ a welcoming environment? How are female athletic bodies viewed in culture and society? How do we make roads safer for cyclists? What role can a national organization like USAC play in that, and to what extent do we also have to be the change? These are just some of the questions we could ask around this topic of how to increase diversity and inclusion of women in cycling.
We welcome triathlete Lindsey Wolfe, who shares her experience as a Wattie Ink brand ambassador, and member of Wattie's Elite race team.
Heather Jackson is a born and bred badass. A native New Englander, she credits her hard work ethic to her upbringing and the strong role models in her family. Between her 90-year old grandpa, who is not uncommonly found fixing someone's roof, to her creative disruptor husband Wattie, Heather is lifted up by her beloved family and community. She has a contagious energy of gratitude and joy that she brings to the highest level of professional triathlon. She is the example of finding what you love and putting your whole heart into it. Of course, this doesn't mean that times have always been easy or so grand. Heather, with Wattie by her side, has mastered one step of life after the next by maintaining awareness around growth. She has taken risks and found that love is the greatest tool for navigating the unknown. This episode gives us insight into the truth behind the woman that we so often see up-high on the podium. Thank you, Heather, and thank you YogiTriathlete community, we are in deep thanks for your support. Namaste - Jess
Tu Tran carried the flag during the 13.1-mile run at Ironman Oceanside in honor of Lance Corporal Abe Simpson. At the finish line, he handed the flag off to Simpson's mother Maria to aid in her journey of celebrating her son's life. Tu shares with us the origin story and the powerful moments before the swim start that created an unforgettable experience. After being a Wattie Ink. team member for years now, Tu recently moved into the role of team manager. On top of his full-time job with Microsoft, a legit and growing resume in endurance sports and a young family at home, Tu signed on to lead the 600 strong Wattie Ink. athlete community as a labor of love. Tu is on a mission to create an impact in the world and do what he can to grow the sport of triathlon. Stepping into this role with Wattie is the logical next step as the cornerstone of the Wattie community is built on making an impact. We dive into the Wattie culture and talk with Tu about how he balances everything on his plate. We discuss the deep inner work necessary to live your best, doing the work for the sake of the work and the importance of present moment awareness. This is an insightful conversation in which we take a look at the human condition. Thank you for tuning in, we are in deep thanks for your support. Namaste -Jess
Straight up, this is one of my favorite episodes I’ve recorded so far. I get the pleasure of talking with my friend VT! Like not just talking but joking and walking her through her overall WIN at Ultraman Israel. There were some very emotional times during this race due to some issues she had. Not just her but her crew as well. There are dark places in most long course races, but this takes the cake. The course at this race is beyond challenging, the conditions are tough, and the elements of comradery, trust, and love are among some of the best ways to describe this race atmosphere. There is a certain uniqueness about this race that is just different. She gives great credit to her husband and Coach Chris, her friend Molly, and most of all the folks at Israel Department of Ministry for making it all possible. --Age Group: PROCalories per hour: 350PSI for this course: 100R/95FDepth of Wheels: 80mmDay 1, Swim 10K+ Bike145K: 9:02:31 -Swim: 3:25:17-Bike: 6:27:23Day 2, Bike 275K: 10:08:31 Day 3, Run 84.4K: 8:09:01Total Race Time: 28:00:17-Gender Rank: 1Division Rank: 1Overall Rank: 1-Follow Amy VT,Instagram: @AmyVantasselFacebook: Amy Vantassel-Chris Bagg Coaching Group: http://www.chrisbaggcoaching.com/Creminelli Meats: https://www.creminelli.com/Field work nutrition: https://www.fieldworknutrition.com/Go Isreal: https://info.goisrael.com/en/ Liv: https://www.liv-cycling.com/usOptic Nerve Eyewear: https://www.opticnerve.com/Pioneer Power: https://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/Cycle+Sports/Pedaling+Monitor/Powerbar: https://www.powerbar.com/Rolf Premo Wheels: https://rolfprima.com/Wattie Ink: https://www.wattieink.com/-Follow Coach Terry:Instagram: @PerfectRacePodcastFacebook: www.facebook.com/CoachTerryWilsonWebsite: www.CoachTerryWilson.com

This is an amazing episode and a totally unique approach on how someone perceives races, training, and more than that, just living day to day. I talk with Roy McBeth not only about his racing and training, but how he is truly grateful for his ability to train and race. Roy has had both of his kidneys removed and a Kidney Transplant. Without this transplant, he would not be able to live like he does today. His display of gratitude towards life and the ability to train and race is something I admire greatly. Without the kidney donation he would have a much less active and different life. Thank you for sharing your story Roy, I really look forward to talking to you again in the future!-Enjoy the show. Wow! What an episode. I am able to have returning guest Rachel McBride on the show and we get to really hear what it’s like to have a really tough day, then for it to change for the better. When she describes the first 5K on the run as pretty horrible and says it’s terrifying how horrible it is. She describes this as a nightmare. But something changed in her mindset that left me in awe. The raw emotion of how her mom became her source of energy in this race that gave her a mental edge for the last half of the run is truly remarkable. Not only did she negative split this marathon in an IRONMAN© but she crushed it. Anyone that wants to learn about the use of positive self-talk and mental game can really gain a lot of insight in this episode. -Enjoy the show. In 2000, at the age of 40, Marina Gelman lost her college-aged daughter in a tragic car accident. At the time, Gelman was a new fitness enthusiast and avid runner. Overcome by grief after the accident, however, she holed herself up for almost two years and focused only on work to numb the pain. Unfortunately, during this time, she abandoned her fitness goals, started smoking again after a long hiatus, and put on weight; reaching over 200 pounds. Ironically, it was another tragedy a short time later, the death of her Father from a heart attack, that inspired her to start training again. As it turns out, training non-stop turned out to be a blessing and a curse. Yes, she lost weight and found relief from her stress and heartache, but she was also overtraining…severely. Marina eventually succumbed to the devastating effects of chronic fatigue. Even the simple act of walking up a flight of stairs became unbearable. In 2012, after hearing about Matt Dixon and Purple Patch from her running club, she reached out. At the time, she was 240 pounds, her heaviest. She explained to Matt that she had only two small goals: Recover from her chronic fatigue Run three miles again. That’s it. Matt set her sights higher. Not only did he give her hope, but he also gave her a long-term structured plan and a wonderful community of support. Today, Marina Gelman is a Half-Ironman finisher, with her hopes set on finishing a full Ironman in the near future. She has also lost 105 pounds and trains daily, fully recovered from chronic fatigue. This is a story of hope and promise. Adopting an athletic mindset, regardless of where you find yourself, just may be the one spark to save your life. “Losing a child is something unimaginable to go through,” says Marina. “Sport, in a way, and running saved me from sadness for the rest of my life.” Attention Purple Patch Athletes and Fans: We are so excited to offer our new kits with our brand new logo! ONE STEP AHEAD: Protein. WORKOUT OF THE WEEK: Bev talks about those pre-race nerves. HOT PROPERTY INTERVIEW - HEATHER JACKSON: Born in Exeter, New Hampshire, American Triathlete Heather Jackson had a passion for ice hockey. She was good at it too, making the US National Team Program before moving to track cycling in 2009. Heather had already ‘dabbled’ in triathlon winning her age group (18-24) in Kona in 2008 and it was a year later that she decided to concentrate solely on the sport. Since then she's gone from strength to strength. Her career highlights to date are impressive with wins at Ironman Coeur d'Alene (2015), 2-Time Ironman 70.3 Oceanside Champion (2013, 2015), Escape from Alcatraz Champion (2013), Ironman 70.3 Princeton Champion (2014), Runner Up at Ironman 70.3 World Championships (2013), 5th Place Ironman World Championships in Kona last year and most recently Heather took out the win and a new course record at Ironman Lake Placid in 9hrs and 9 mins. Can't wait to see how she goes in Kona! 5 MIN FOCUS: This week Bev talks to Sean Watkins, husband of Heather Jackson and founder of Wattie Ink. Founded in Southern California in 2009 Wattie Ink. has evolved from a sports marketing agency representing some of the world’s best triathletes to an apparel company dedicated to creating the finest gear in the world. Wattie Ink. apparel is designed, tested and manufactured in their own factory in Southern California with the intent to inspire, motivate and challenge athletes to follow their dreams, take risks, and never give up.
